Home brewer is ready to serve Vashon A hobby becomes Vashon’s first commercial brewery By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

When Cliff Goodman donated a case of his home-brewed beer to Vashon Community Care’s Labor of Love auction last year, he felt he was simply doing a good deed for the care center, where his wife Cara Aguilera works. However, when his various homemade ales — which had always been popular with his friends — quickly garnered top bids, Goodman began to think. “It turned out to be really popular,” he said, some surprise still in his voice. Now, with a new commercial brewing setup at his home on Quartermaster Drive, Goodman is preparing to sell his beer on Vashon. The one-man Vashon Brewing Company — the first brewery on Vashon — will offer selections at The Hardware Store Restaurant by the end of the year and join local producers and wineries at the Farmers Market next year. “We have a lot of wineries,” said Hardware Store manager Alex Van Amburg. “It’s about time we had a brewery on the Island.” Van Amburg said he has sampled several of Goodman’s brews and was impressed. “They were all at least comparable, if not better, than the beer we already carry,” he said. Goodman, finance director for the Seattle Men’s Chorus, has always loved both beer and cooking. He began brewing in his garage about 20 years ago, just before moving to Vashon. Since then, he says, he has abandoned recipes and simply brews what he loves, using Washington-grown ingredients. “To me there’s something magical about brewing beer,” he said, standing outside his home last week, popping a bud-like hop

of the network. In 2009 and 2010, the members of the network assessed where gaps in Island services were, he noted, and the scarcity of free meals on the Island was an issue that rose to the top. Members then set a goal for themselves: to serve two hot meals a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Maaz said. This new undertaking is a step toward fulfilling that goal. Currently, 12 to 18 people attend the free Monday night dinners in the Village

For the first time in more than a decade, Vashon Junior Civic Ballet won’t be producing “The Nutcracker” this winter due to a painful dispute that has riven the company and put a temporary halt to the Island’s only free ballet program. The Vashon Park District, concerned about the dispute and frustrated by the amount of staff time spent trying to help the parties resolve their differences, cancelled its contract with Vashon Island Community Ballet — a reconstituted version of the program — two weeks ago. The move means the park district will no longer sponsor the free program and that dancers will no longer have a place to rehearse in the months leading up to its annual winter production. The park district’s contract with the company ends Sept. 29. “The internal conflicts of the community of ballet parents have become so protracted that the cost to the district in management time cannot be justified,” Wendy Braicks, the park district’s executive director, wrote in a Sept. 8 letter to the rival parties. “We strongly encourage you to resolve your conflicts internally and consider reorganizing in such a way that your governance structure more fully represents the broader community which you serve.” The dispute is hard on many of the dancers, some of whom have grown up in the small company. Juliana Goth, 16, was eagerly anticipating her 10th performance of “The Nutcracker” this winter, when she would be cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy. “It makes me so sad,” she said. “I was really looking forward to it.” “It’s been a great support system for me,” she added. “It’s been a

With the exception of Mondays, when dinner will be offered in the Village Green, all meals will be served at Island churches in the downtown area and free to anyone who needs a meal for the food itself or the companionship of gathering with others. “We want to feed the body and the soul,” said Ken Maaz, the executive director of Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) and the chair

The pedestrian-only boat between Vashon and Seattle will be able to carry more passengers on its six daily sailings next year, helping to alleviate at-capacity crossings that have left some riders standing on the dock. Currently, under Coast Guard rules, the King County Ferry District can allow 150 passengers onto the boat, even though the Melissa Ann, a 77-foot catamaran that once serviced commuters in Hawaii, has room for additional passengers. Starting in 2012, however, the county will allow 172 passengers per sailing, a move it was able to announce after discussions with the Coast Guard and a green light from the board that oversees the ferry district. The higher passenger count means the ferry district will need to add another life raft and make some operational changes, said Scott Davis, the director of the marine division for the county’s Department of Transportation. But because of the increased ridership, “We believe we’ll recoup our costs, he said. The popular water taxi has

In 2010, the boat left riders on the dock 78 times; so far this year, there have been 84 occurrences, Davis said. Last month was one of the worst, with 15 sailings that left people behind. Davis said the greater capacity should address the problem and help the county build the kind of system it wants. “We’re trying to build a water taxi service that is reliable and that everybody can count on. And when people aren’t assured of getting a spot, they at least perceive that they can’t count

Davis said recent decisions should give commuters confidence that the cash-strapped ferry district continues to have support among county’s policy makers. At the same time, he noted, the system still lacks a solid revenue stream. “I’m encouraged that it isn’t going to go anywhere anytime soon, Davis said. “But the reality is that our budget isn’t sustainable.

Vashon emergency responders voice concern about county’s roads plan By LESLIE BROWN Staff Writer

Islanders are beginning to express concerns to King County officials about County Executive Dow Constantine’s decision to let hundreds of miles of roads deteriorate due to the county’s deepening financial problems. Hank Lipe, chief of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue, wrote a letter to County Councilmember Joe McDermott last week and called a special fire commission meeting to approve it this week after he learned that Constantine’s proposal is about to become a part of his official budget request. The proposal will soon be pending before the county council. And Joe Ulatoski, a candidate for one of two open

seats on the fire commission, called on the VashonMaury Island Community Council to pass an urgent motion expressing its unhappiness with the proposal — a measure that wasn’t considered Monday because the council lacked a quorum. Ulatoski, who helped establish Vashon’s emergency preparedness program, VashonBePrepared, said he was troubled by what he called King County’s failure “to do their homework. “They should have come to the Island immediately and discussed the ramifications, Ulatoski said. The proposal, he added, “should be put into abeyance until county officials understand how the program could affect Vashon. Lipe agreed, noting that the plan could have a serious impact on Vashon,

where some of the leasttraveled roads are steep and circuitous and a lack of maintenance could make it impossible for large emergency-response vehicles to safely use them. “These are basic public safety needs, Lipe said. “Last time I checked, I thought that’s what government was all about. But Jay Osborne, manager of the office of strategic asset management for the county’s Road Services Division, said the way the legislative process often works is that the executive sends a proposal to the council, launching a round of public hearings and debate. “Part of what’s going on on Vashon is a misunderstanding of the public process, Osborne said. The council, he noted, will now hold hearings that will give the nine-member board a chance to revise the proposal and give county residents a chance to weigh in. He also said the roads division held a meeting of emergency responders last month

and will hold one this week; VIFR representatives were invited to both, he said. “We’re just starting the public outreach part, Osborne added. Under the county’s proposal, nearly 75 miles of roads on Vashon and more than 1,000 miles countywide will get little to no maintenance and be allowed to deteriorate over time due to the county’s declining tax base, an ongoing recession and a backlog of unmet needs. Depending on the amount of use, some roads on Vashon and other parts of unincorporated King County will become one lane or dead-end roads while others will be turned into gravel. Under the tiered system the division created, Vashon has one road that would continue to receive a high level of maintenance — the full length of Vashon Highway — and a handful of other roads that would get nearly that level of treatment — including Dockton Road, the Westside Highway and Wax Orchard Road.

But others — such as the Dilworth Loop, Ridge Road, roads at Gold Beach, Luana Beach Road and dozens of other streets — are in the lowest tier and would get little or no maintenance. According to a definition by the roads division, those lower-tier roads “could experience significant downgrades and permanent closures that could force homeowners to travel longer routes to reach their property. Lipe, however, said the approach could have farreaching impacts on Vashon, where response times to emergencies are already greater than “desired standards. What’s more, he said, because of the paucity of fire hydrants, VIFR relies on water tenders that carry 3,000 gallons of water and weigh 55,000 pounds — vehicles that could become unsafe if roads are no longer adequately maintained. He called on McDermott and the county council to “thoroughly study the uniqueness of the roadways here before approving the

plan. Ulatoski, who is running against volunteer firefighter Candy McCullough for an open seat on the fire commission, said he was frustrated when he read that Constantine listed public safety as one of the considerations in establishing the tiered system. “The main gripe I have is that they did not look at the public safety ramifications when they made the decisions, Ulatoski said. McDermott, meanwhile, said he was glad to receive Lipe’s letter. “I will certainly make sure they’re part of the conversation. At the same time, he noted, the county is facing a crisis. “Traditional funding models for transportation are not keeping up, he said. “In fact, they’re falling rapidly behind. For more information about the county’s plan, visit kingcounty.gov/ transportation/kcdot/ Roads/NewServiceLevels.

New alternative school aims to give teen girls a holistic education By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

As the school year drew to a close last June, Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) began to hear from a handful of teenage girls who were already dreading their return to high school in the fall. “It was the last week of school and they were already stressed and worried about going back, said Marianne Rose, clinical director for the HART (Holistic Approaches to Recovery Treatment) program at VYFS. This year, girls on Vashon who struggle to thrive in the traditional high school setting have another option: an alternative school put on by VYFS that aims to give girls support in a wide variety of areas, not just academics. “We thought there had to be some other way. There’s got to be something more positive to allow some more stability for the girls to really flourish, said Rose, who spearheaded HART Academy with VYFS director Ken Maaz. Though HART itself is an substance abuse treatment program, Maaz said girls eligible to take part in HART Academy could struggle in high school for a variety of reasons. What HART students have in common, he said, is a desire to work independently outside of a classroom and a need for more overall support, be it academic help, life skills lessons or counseling. “These aren’t problem kids, Maaz emphasized. “The traditional school setting was not a good fit for them, and the alternatives available were not a good fit for them. The eight students at HART Academy this year are technically enrolled in FamilyLink — the school district’s homeschool program — and their parents pay $250 a month in tuition. “(The parents) can’t provide the ongoing supervision and assistance that other kids in FamilyLink would get, Maaz said. “Essentially we’re stepping in and providing that for those families. One high school junior who is attending HART Academy this year said she’s known since middle school that she had trouble learning in a traditional classroom setting. Some classes moved too quickly for her, others not quickly enough, and she struggled to get the help she needed. “It was a hard environment for me to learn in, she said. “Class sizes weren’t even necessarily that large, but it was hard for me to focus.

At HART Academy, students design their own coursework — a mix of graduation requirements and elective classes — with help from Yve Susskind. Susskind founded FamilyLink and oversees the HART students’ academic progress during work time at the the VYFS building, giving them help when they need it. “It’s an atmosphere where they feel less stress and less anxiety,â€? Maaz said, “and where they can receive more individual attention.â€? Rose said the girls who come to HART are in need of a more holistic education than traditional high school can provide. During their weekly schedule the students will learn about healthy lifestyle choices and work on life skills and goal setting. They’ll be required to log the time they spend exercising, for example, and keep a journal as part of their spiritual development. Rose said the girls already enjoy taking mid-morning breaks to make protein smoothies. “This came out of knowing enough teenage girls especially who were not given enough soil and water to grow. ‌ They’re adding in some things to their life that would help them be more themselves,â€? she said. “They can become more of their best selves.â€? The HART Academy students will also attend a weekly support group, Rose said, and some will get individualized therapy from a VYFS counselor. The agency is prepared to counsel teen girls on a wide variety of issues, including substance abuse, relationships and emotional health.

So far, the HART junior says she enjoys being able to work at her own pace and feels like she has support when she needs it. She’s also excited to be able to study astronomy as an elective. She continues to take drama classes at the high school and will participate in school plays. “It’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, she said. HART Academy is a pilot program, Rose said, and VYFS will monitor the girls’ progress. So far though, she said, she’s gotten nothing but positive feedback from the students. “There’s a feeling of energy behind it that has been so exhilarating, and the girls look relieved and happy, she said. Rose and Maaz are still planning, too. They hope to take the girls on field trips, have some students do job shadows and bring in volunteer tutors for tough subjects. If this year goes well, they say, they’ll consider creating a similar program for boys, something that’s already been requested. “There’s a different sense of possibility (at HART), Rose said, “They’re not stuck. That’s our goal with any client: You’re not trapped; you always have a choice in the situation.

4VNNFS T FOE CSJOHT BOPUIFS LJOE PG TXFFUOFTT There’s a sweetness in the air as summer gives way to fall. Tomatoes, in glorious shades of reds and oranges, are finally ripening. The fall-bearing raspberry bushes outside our home are yielding just enough fruit for a fresh bowl each morning. Vines are heavy with blackberries. Zucchinis are proliferating. And while many of our Island’s mellifluous birds have already begun their migrations south, they’ve been replaced by other natural wonders — like the bioluminescence that turns our beaches into places of magic this time of year. Twice last week, various configurations of our family made our way to KVI Beach in the cover of night to see if we could find that fleeting fairy dust in the sand. We weren’t disappointed. When our dog ran, her paw prints glowed in the dark behind her. When we jumped, our own prints created such an impact that it looked like someone had spilled a carton of milk — though only for a few seconds. When we took a stick and ran it through the wet sand, symbols suddenly appeared and then faded away, like some kind of secret code. Our exchange student, a teenager from Liechtenstein, a country that’s double-landlocked, as he likes to point out, asked what it was. Though we’d looked it up before, we couldn’t quite recall enough details to explain it. Couldn’t we just call it the magic of the world? It’s been a week of such wonders. We got a call at The Beachcomber from an Islander a few days ago who just learned that Vashon is home to northern flying squirrels, a discovery she made, unfortunately, when her cat dragged one into her home. Who knew, she said, that such delicate and rare creatures — nocturnal animals that sleep in tree cavities during the day — lived on the Island? Didn’t we want to write a news story about them, she asked? Another Island friend emailed to say she’d seen a coyote on Vashon — her first sighting in her many years on the Island. She, too, thought maybe there was a story here. And while kayaking the other day, we were amazed by the thousands of jellies that surrounded our boat, milky-translucent critters that floated past in thick, ethereal clouds. Of course, none of these wonders are inexplicable. It’s all part of the ecosystem we inhabit — a delightfully temperate place blessed with a species-rich inland sea, forests that harbor mammals and birds and humans who love to till the soil. Taken together, we live in a blessed part of the world. And so it seems especially now, on these golden days of September — summer’s last hurrah. — Leslie Brown, editor

On Vashon, a small investment of time continues to help those with AIDS On a cool February morning in 1998, I volunteered for my first time for Care to Shop, aka, “The Chicken Soup Brigade. It was a crisp, bright morning on Capitol Hill in Seattle, and folks came back from the store with all sorts of food items for the Lifelong Aids Alliance. In March of that year, I brought Care to Shop to Vashon. Lifelong Aids Alliance (LLAA) wasn’t called that back then; it was the Northwest AIDS Foundation. Their function was and still is to serve the needs of those in King County who are living with AIDS. Counseling, case management, Meals on Wheels and a “second harvest food kitchen are just a few of its many programs. Many people in the area have brought their talents to the group to offer even more to these folks. You can get a hair cut or theater tickets, obtain taxi rides to doctors appointments, shop at a “Granny’s Attic type store, enjoy group outings and more. One of the most successful and beneficial programs is Care to Shop. This offers a chance to participate in a most fundamental way: Feed the hungry. On Vashon, we have taken this effort to a higher plane by adding non-food items to the shopping list. These basics are not funded by any government program, so those items must be

VOLUNTEERISM By LARRY FLYNN bought with supplement checks. When you start with $500 a month, simple items such as aspirin or shampoo become very expensive very quickly. On Vashon, we have the distinct honor of outclassing Seattle by heads and shoulders. When they gather 800 pounds, we collect 1,000. When they gather 1,200 pounds, we do 1,800. This is significant, given that Seattle has more than two stores and far more than 11,000 people to volunteer and/or shop for this effort. Vashon’s participation in Care to Shop has raised the bar so high that the foundation decided to give us an award for this in 1998. There was a problem at the time, though: The group didn’t have a category for, as they put it, “a one-man show. I pointed out at the awards ceremony that I’m hardly a oneman show and that I’ve managed all of this with the help of the caring hearts here on Vashon. They all laughed, I shook the governor’s hand, and we had a great time.

Keystone Pipeline

$PMVNO SBJTFE DSJUJDBM JTTVFT MFU T BMM SFTQPOE Regarding “Proposed pipeline is the wrong choice, a column in the Sept. 7 issue of The Beachcomber, a huge bouquet of thanks to Jen Williams for representing Vashon at the largest civil disobedience action in front of the White House since the days of the Civil Rights Movement. Kudos also go to The Beachcomber for printing her article, filled with facts as well as defining

the larger aspects of the pipeline issue, which has gone almost unreported by the mainstream media. The question for us is how to follow up on Ms. Williams’ initiative. I have three suggestions. First, recognize our personal responsibility in the consumption of fossil fuel. Second, constantly examine our use of oil/gasoline/natural gas and reduce. And third, call the White House at (202) 456-1111 weekly and request that President Obama cancel the Keystone Pipeline Project. Ms. Williams is willing to make a stand and use the words “moral

Recently, the folks at LLAA have decided to laud us again. They’re now saying that our work has raised the bar in Seattle to such a height that they wouldn’t be able to do their jobs as well without our food and cash contributions. With our contributions, we’re helping to sustain these sterling outreach programs to a community of health-challenged people. With a jar of peanut butter, you might ask. Certainly! With food stamps and financial assistance checks being so small in the first place, your help afterwards makes all the difference in the world to some. Volunteering for Care to Shop involves a two-hour commitment one Saturday a month. This commitment on your part can make a big difference in someone’s life. What’s more, you also get a chance to see a lot of your friends. So if you would like to volunteer, would you call me and give a little of your time to help out? There are many who would be grateful to you, including me. — Larry Flynn is a long-time Islander and a Metro bus driver.

Care to Shop is held the third Saturday of the month. To volunteer or for more information, contact Larry Flynn at 463-5286 or laf442@centurytel.net

Thanks to the event’s considerable reputation and ideal weather, we noticed an increase in the number of motorcycles on the Island this year. As many of you know, we limit advertising the event’s date and only post it in the VME club newsletter a month before the ride. Prior to the TT, we notify the ferry system and local restaurants. Safe riding and observing all traffic regulations are strongly emphasized on the registration form. Our intent is to keep this a low-key event where the main theme is vintage motorcycles. The numerous VME members who live on the Island take particular pride in this activity, which is enjoyed by both participants and the community. The VME has contributed to the community over the years by donating to the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank, including $500 for this year’s event, and through the adoption of Cemetery Road, where we participate in King County’s road cleanup. The Isle of Vashon TT also benefits the Vashon Grappler’s Society, which provides food services at the Sportsmen’s Club, where we value being able to rent their wonderful facility each year. Over the past 29 years we

have never experienced any serious motorcycling incidents and pride ourselves in the manner this large event has been safely managed. We hope you enjoyed this year’s Isle of Vashon TT as much as we did. — Richard Campbell and Jody Heintzman, VME members and Vashon residents

Quartermaster

0VS UJEFMBOET DPVME PGGFS VQ B CPVOUZ I have made a motion at the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council to send a letter to the state requesting a tideland inventory, but I need your vote. Instead of a cesspool and garbage dump, Quartermaster Harbor is becoming a healthy ecosystem. Some are still polluting, but it is now a requirement that all septic systems be tested. Since sewage runs downhill, pollution uphill is also being addressed. Once certified, our aquaculture tidelands around the harbor will become very sought after. There are already tideland owners who smell an easy profit from leasing their tidelands to shellfish corporations or other investors. When our best tidelands are certified

888 7"4)0/#&"$)$0.#&3 $0.

and these organizations get the tideland leases before us, we are locked out. Some think they can easily put a stop to the leases, but it may not be possible because of the marine recovery area (MRA). During the Glacier fight, concern for our tidelands, fish, shellfish and habitat were a major reason why our tidelands received the designation of Marine Recover Areas. Shellfish farming is not only allowed in MRAs but encouraged because shellfish are filter feeders and each oyster, clam and mussel cleans 50 to 65 gallons of water per day — so farming enhances recovery. The economic and jobs potential is enormous. If Islanders farm the tidelands, we will have a lot more interest in keeping the homeowners overlooking the tidelands happy, where outsiders may not care about noise, lights and corporate employees working all hours. Vote for my letter at the next VMICC meeting — for a well-paid carrier in shellfish farming for our children or grandchildren or yourself, to help develop our college, improve our economy or keep our tidelands from outsiders. Please come out and support this motion. — Bill Rowling, VMICC Clerk

Letters accepted must be no more than 150 words and include a daytime phone number. Deadline for this section is noon on Friday. Letters in this section will run as submitted except in the cases of libel or profanity.

New forum will take on water issues By JENNY BELL For The Beachcomber

In a time when there is much apprehension about the future, one of the most soothing exercises for me is action. Focused action is the antidote to fear. The new All Island Forum community group offers Vashon a great vehicle for action. It has the potential to be a voice of the village. A mechanism that can express the thoughts of many. Listen, engage, express, act. Community transition requires many elements. Not just an understanding of our finite resources and the technologies that might help us move toward a vital, resilient future, but also improving our social mechanisms — like coming together as a community to make decisions effectively and then potentially produce action. This is an area we are struggling with at all levels: international, national and local. The All Island Forum (AIF) seeks to bring us together to talk about issues of importance to us. It offers a format that can be adjusted according to community feedback. Its purpose is to provide a collaborative, participatory and effective forum that results in community dialogue and action. Water has been chosen as the topic to explore first as a community. It is a great beginning, as water is always sure to inspire spirited discussion. As Mark Twain said: “Whiskey is for drinking and water is for fightin’ over. Water brings up a wide range of feelings and issues for people. The new King County policy allowing rainwater harvesting to be the only source of supply for homes has further created much interest in alternative water supply for Islanders. AIF is coming together for its first monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22,

to find out the issues of importance to Islanders on the topic of water. The results of this meeting will feed into our first community forum: “Water on Vashon: Vitality, Resilience and Growth, on Thursday, Oct. 27. As an example, some of the issues that have been raised around rainwater harvesting as an alternative water supply for Islanders include water conservation, environment protection, healthy water supplies and using a lack of water to limit growth and building on the Island. Our forum is designed to encourage the sharing of diverse perspectives and facilitate group discussion. Professionals and experts on water with a broad range of experience will be on hand to add to our information base and engage in discussion with our community. Creating action based on diverse goals is a further goal of the forum. Let’s bring our passionate Vashon energy together in one place and have a go at creating something that is a particularly big struggle for communities large and small: participatory democracy. In the spirit of creating a space where our diverse voices are heard, acknowledged and concerted community action can evolve, we need your participation and feedback to make something we all want to be part of. — Jenny Bell, an Islander active in All Island Forum, is a water consultant and the owner of Watersmart. The All Island Forum’s first monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Land Trust Building, where the group will plan its first community forum. That forum, with water as its focus, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Open Space for Arts & Community.

Vashon Island’s second Labyrinth Tour will be this Saturday, when eight Island labryrinths open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided tour will begin at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, where directions to the other labyrinths and details of the day, including information on music and dance performances at some of the labyrinths, will be available. Performers will include the Circle of Sound, Vashon Celtic Players, harpist Alina Brown and dancers with Visonary Dance Productions and Mendana Productions. All of the labyrinths are different from one another, some deep in the forest, others out in the open, some a walk in a field and one with walkways made from the bottoms of 6,500 wine bottles, according to organizer Betty Hawkins. Vashon hosted a labryinth tour in 2006, Hawkins said, and five of the stops on this tour are different than the ones then. Over the years, Vashon has had at least 15 to 20 labyrinths, and there are roughly a dozen that Hawkins knows about now, she said. Those wishing to learn more about labyrinths — which go back 4,500 years and have been found in many different cultures — are invited to attend a short presentation by Christine Hamby at 10 a.m. the day of the tour at the Episcopal Church. SCENE & HEARD Zack Drape, CJ Williams, Ben Reoux and Kelly Sullivan, juniors at Vashon High School, recently completed a bike/camping trip spanning the Oregon coast from Astoria to California. The four have been friends and teammates on various sports teams over the years, according to Dennis Williams, CJ’s father. The foursome traveled up to 60 miles per day and spent each night at campgrounds along the coast. Their goal was to reach California and see the redwoods, Dennis Williams said. The teens did not have a support vehicle with them, and other than checking in along the way with their families, they were on their own. Although the boys’ parents were skeptical at first that they could make it in such a short period, they proved to be up to the challenge, Williams said. $PVSUFTZ 1IPUP

The three girls have been selling the bracelets all summer at the market as a fundraiser they developed for Vashon Youth & Family Services. So far, they said, they’ve raised more than $1,000 for the Island agency. Maisy said they decided on VYFS because her and Madison’s mother, Alison, is on the board. “She helps out there, and we thought it was a good organization, Maisy said.

Art will be the star of a glitzy gala ‘Lights, Camera, Auction’ is the theme of Vashon Allied Arts’ annual event

L

By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD Arts Editor

I

slanders can slip back in time to the glory days of old Hollywood this weekend when Vashon Allied Arts throws its annual star-studded auction.

The gala, now in its 34th year as a fixture on the Island’s cultural calendar, aims to net more than $100,000 for Vashon Allied Arts, with almost half of that amount slated for VAA’s scholarship program, which helps Islanders with financial need cover the costs of the arts organization’s classes and productions. The rest of the money will help fund VAA’s overstuffed calendar of events, performances and arts classes. The scholarship fund is an increasing part of VAA’s budget. Last year, a special “raise the paddle section of VAA’s auction raised $40,000 for scholarships — a fund that was completely used up by the end of summer. This year, VAA is hoping to raise $45,000 for scholarships, said Molly Reed, VAA’s executive director. The increase over time has been dramatic, she noted; in 2006, VAA offered $15,000 in scholarships. “We don’t turn anyone away; everyone gets something. We’re trying to be really accessible, she said. This year’s auction theme is “Lights, Camera, Auction, and silver screen-themed decorations, food and impersonations of Hollywood stars by Island performers will help turn the two evenings into glamorous affairs, organizers hope. “There are some people who go all out every year and treat it like a costume ball, Reed said. More than 140 pieces of locally crafted art will be on the auction block, including colorful paintings, vibrant photography, sculptures, jewelry and more. Works by six specially commissioned artists — Gretchen Hancock, Gus Schairer, Nancy Sipple, Art Hansen, Odin Lonning and Elaine Summers — will grab the spotlight at the auction and are expected to attract some of the most spirited bidding. A wide range of experiences — including a week-long trip to Palm Springs, weekend getaways to places such as the Methow Valley, Orcas Island and Whidbey Island, dinners at local restaurants and private homes and tickets to sports, theater and music events — are also on the auction block. Both nights will also include special dinners. On Friday, a buffet called “Some Like It Hot will be created by Tom French and his students at Vashon High School’s Culinary Arts program. Saturday night will feature a sit-down dinner catered by The Hardware Store Restaurant. It all sounds glitzy, but according to Reed, the auction plays a large part in helping to meet the basic needs of Island artists. Each year, she said, VAA pays out approximately $300,000 in commissions to artists,

Artworks by Nancy Sipple (top), Elaine Sipple (bottom left) and Odin Lonning (bottom right) have been commissioned for VAA’s annual gala, and will be auctioned off along with 140 other pieces at this year’s auction. performers and teachers, so some of the money raised at the auction will go back into the pockets of some of the Island’s most creative residents. “We provide a really consistent opportunity to a whole lot of artists to have an income, Reed said. VAA’s core programs include classes and workshops, a summer music festival, a garden tour and an array of dance, drama and music performances throughout the year. The organization also operates the Blue Heron Gallery and the Heron’s Nest, both of which provide exhibition and sales opportunities for local artists. The organization is also in the midst of a capital campaign to build a $16.5 million dollar new facility at the corner of Vashon

Highway and Cemetery Road, but none of the money raised on Friday and Saturday will go to that project. “This isn’t about the new building, Reed said. “It’s about keeping the programs going that we have, and keeping this building going. It’s about the organization. The operating funds come first.

Vashon Allied Arts’ annual auction will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, in a giant tent at the Blue Heron Arts Center. Tickets for Friday are $45 per person and for Saturday $120 per person. For tickets and information, visit www. vashonalliedarts.org or call 463-5131.

Sheepdog trials will again support PIE As organizers prepare for the Vashon Sheepdog Classic, which will take place at the end of this month, they’re hoping to again raise funds for Partners in Education (PIE) through a dog sponsorship fundraiser that’s part of the three-day sheepherding trials. Several individuals and businesses have already paid $100 to sponsor the competing dog of their choice. The sponsor of the dog that earns the most points by the end of the trial will win a three-day stay at a vacation home in Whistler, British Columbia. All funds raised through the dog sponsorship, called “Smart Dogs for Smart Kids, as well as all proceeds from the trials, will go to PIE, an Island nonprofit that provides teachers, administrators and students with grants for special classroom projects and continued education. More than 100 dogs are expected to compete with their handlers at this year’s sheepdog classic, which will again take place on 30 acres of rolling hills at Misty Isle Farms. Last year, more than 2,000 people attended the trials — the first on the Island since 2002 — raising nearly $5,000 for PIE. Maggi McClure, who spearheaded last year’s event, said in a press release that organizers this

“It’s kind of sticky,â€? he said, pushing the powder around with his finger. “That’s what gives beer the bitter taste.â€? But when Goodman brews, he says, no two batches ever are alike. He’s constantly going for different flavors and experimenting with ingredients. “Flowery, earthy, spicy, all different flavors and aromas, I really like playing around with them,â€? he said, making his way to the small, freshly painted brew shed not far from the hops. Inside the shed were buckets of barley and hops, as well as shelves full of stainless steel equipment — some for cooking, some for cooling and some for fermenting. It wouldn’t be long before the shed filled with the pungent smells of beer in the making. “Good equipment makes it a lot easier, ‌ like food-grade hoses, made to handle boiling-hot liquid. Everything is special-

ized, he said. Goodman plans to continue brewing by the season. During the winter months, for example, his beer may be heavier and hoppier, he said. In the summer, it could be lighter and have flavors of citrus. One of Goodman and his wife’s favorite home brews is an alder-smoked porter, which he makes by cold-smoking barley, often using alder scraps given to him by the Vashon Forest Stewards. “It has a smokier flavor that I really like, he said. “It adds extra complexity and gives it a little Northwest flavor. Now that his children are out of college, Goodman says he’s an empty nester with more time on his hands and a little more money to expand his hobby into a small side business. In the industry, Goodman’s operation is considered a nanobrewery — a notch down from a microbrewery, which can produce 10 or more batches at a time. As a nanobrewery, he’ll produce about one batch a week, and four at the most.

Page 12

“I’d rather have a small operation that’s successful at a local scale, he said. The nanobrewery is a small but growing trend. Home brewing has been legal for only a few decades, Goodman noted, and only in recent years have more quality ingredients been available to home brewers. “The federal agency that handles licensing and the state agency are both going crazy because the number of breweries is growing like crazy in this country. And it’s not the big breweries that are contributing to the number, he said. It’s the small, sometimes home-based, breweries like Vashon Brewing Company that are popping up everywhere, he said. “It’s definitely a trend, and it’s not just a trend on Vashon or Seattle or even in Washington. It’s a nationwide trend. Goodman believes Islanders — like Van Amburg at The Hardware Store — will go for his Island-made beer. Seeing the success of local wineries at the Farmers Market is, in part, what encouraged Goodman to start Vashon Brewing Company, he said. At the

market, he plans to sell his beer in growlers, half-gallon glass jugs that customers can bring back to refill. “People go out of their way to pay more and buy local, he said. “If people vote with their wallets, they’re serious about it. Islander Peter Milovsoroff says he, for one, will be a customer. Milovsoroff, a beer lover who has dabbled in home brewing himself, won Goodman’s beer at the Labor of Love Auction and liked it so much that he rationed it out, drinking just one or two bottles a week. “When you get beer that’s only a few weeks old, just recently brewed, for some reason it just tastes better, Milovsoroff said. “It’s like food fresh from the garden. Van Amburg said he loves to buy local products to offer at The Hardware Store, but only if those products are good. And good beer, he says, is something he believes Goodman will deliver. “The real appeal is we’re supporting a local entrepreneur who’s creating a quality product, he said.

Girls soccer takes back-to-back wins Vashon’s girls varsity soccer team, which has a history of success, won its first two games of the season last week. The girls beat Charles Wright, 4-1, at a home game on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Two days later they took down Cascade Christian in a shutout away game, 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Lliralyn McEachern scored the winning goal against Cascade Christian, and also scored against Charles Wright. Coach Paul Beytebiere said he was especially pleased to see Vashon beat Charles Wright, the only Nisqually team that Vashon lost to last season. What’s more, he said, Vashon hasn’t beat Charles Wright on the home field for several years. “It was a really nice win, and they played really well, he said. 3JL 'PSTDINJFEU 1IPUP 3JLTJNBHFT DPN

Young runners join Vashon success By KEVIN ROSS For The Beachcomber

Last Thursday the Vashon Pirates cross country team hosted the Life Christian Eagles and the Orting Cardinals at a meet on Vashon’s 5K course, which finishes at the high school stadium. The afternoon started with the 3K middle school race. Jeffrey Parrish started his running career off with a first-place victory in 11:10. He and Life Christian’s Tyler Miller went neck and neck for most of the race before Jeffrey pulled away with just over 800 meters to go. Eva Cyra and Camryn Kim-Murphy finished fourth and fifth for the middle school girls. Jasper Heckman from Orting won the 5K varsity boys race in 18:01. Vashon’s Ryan Krug took home the fifth-place ribbon with

a time of 20:08. Orting won the overall boys meet with 16 points, and the Pirates finished with 41 points. Elisha Pablow from Orting won the girls varsity race in 21:26, and Maddi Groen and Peri Roberts took fourth and fifth place in the race. Orting won the girls meet with 19 points. Life Christian scored 90 points and Vashon had 49 points. Last Saturday the Pirates headed to the Fort Steilacoom Invitational, where schools representing all divisions were present. Both the boys and girls teams along with the middle school runners set a number of personal best times. Tomorrow the team will take on several schools at a 4 p.m. meet at Lincoln Park — Kevin Ross is a cross country coach at Vashon High School.

Last year the Pirates finished second to Charles Wright in the Nisqually League and took fourth place at the 1A state tournament. Beytebiere said this year’s team — with nearly 50 girls in the varsity and JV programs — also looks promising. “The midfield and offense and leadership has been real good so far this year, he said. “The back four, defensive unit is coming together and taking a lot of pride in their defense. The Pirates played Chimacum on Monday after press deadline. They will take on Life Christian in a home game tonight at 6 p.m., and will travel to the Stadium Bowl tomorrow to play Woodrow Wilson High School in a non-league game at 7:15 p.m. —Natalie Johnson

Pirate football wins first league game By BRIAN BRENNO For The Beachcomber

Last Saturday a young Vashon Pirate football team traveled to Port Townsend for its first league game of the season and showed the beginnings of future successes in a 62-30 rout over the Port Townsend Redskins. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Nick Amundsen hit Garrett Starr for Amundsen’s first of five touchdown passes in the game. With a two point conversion, the Pirates were up 8-0. Port Townsend then drove over 60 yards for their first touchdown, bringing the score to 8-6.

The Pirates fumbled, one of several in the first half, leading to a Port Townsend touchdown, putting them ahead, 12-8. On strong running from Nick Betts and Nick Amundsen, the Pirates ended their next drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Amundsen to Garrett Starr, the conversion putting Vashon ahead 14-12. Starting the second quarter with good reads of the Port Townsend defense, Amundsen took the ball on a keeper for over 25 yards, one of his many big yardage keepers in the game. Then on first and goal Amundsen hit Ezra Ende on a three-yard touchdown pass, the conversion

making it 22-12 Vashon. The Pirate defense then gave up two long runs, earning Port Townsend another touchdown and bringing it to 22-18. Vashon fumbled on the first play after the kickoff. The Redskins got the ball, but were stopped and punted to the Pirates. Another fumble by the Pirates led to a Port Townsend touchdown on a 35-yard run, putting them ahead, 24-22. On the Pirates next drive Amundsen kept the ball again on fourth down, gaining a first down; the Pirates never punted in the game and converted two fourth-down plays. The SEE FOOTBALL, NEXT PAGE

Vashon riders revive a unique trail ride competition

For The Beachcomber

On Saturday, Sept. 10, 19 Vashon riders and their horses gathered at Paradise Ridge Park for the Vashon Maury Island Cooperative Trail Ride, the first competitive trail ride on Vashon in 25 years. The event sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Horse Association. The course was more than 13 miles long, covering trails from Paradise Ridge to Misty Isle all the way up to the Island Center Forest. The horse and rider teams were judged on the horses’ condition, how well they negotiated obstacles and the time in which they finished. A competitive trail ride is not a race, but a paced trail ride with obstacles along the way. The obstacles were as simple as crossing the road in a safe, polite manner to walking through water, walking over a small bridge and walking safely down a very steep hill. Riders were not allowed to dismount unless for safety reasons. Friends and family joined the riders and volunteers for a potluck barbecue lunch while the scores were tallied. Kate Shook took first place in the Senior division riding Craig Harmeling’s molly mule Jordan. Leigh Selari won first in the Social Security division (horse plus rider’s age equals more than 65) riding her own

drive ended with a run to the two-yard line by Betts and a touchdown run by Amundsen, putting Vashon ahead, 28-24, at halftime. The Pirates first possession of the second half had the offensive line making some great blocks, leading to several long runs ending with a touchdown pass from Amundsen to Starr, bringing the score to 36-24. Another strong Pirate drive in the third quarter led to a 44-24 Vashon lead. After giving up some big plays in the first half, the Pirate defense, with the help of veterans Robert Easton, Kevin Thomas and Elliott Ellingsen, held the Redskins to one touchdown in second half and three punts, one of which was blocked into Nick Amundsen’s hands and returned for a touchdown, putting the score at 50-24. Green; 25 people or more attend the long-running Wednesday night dinners at the Church of the Holy Spirit, and as many as 35 people attend the weekly dinner at the Presbyterian Church hosted by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness (IFCH), according to Deb Dammann, a community organizer who attends the VSSN meetings and is a primary force behind the new undertaking. In all, she estimates, Island volunteers feed 40 to 50 people each week. Starting Oct. 1, the interfaith council will offer two dinners, which it has done fall through spring for nearly eight years, according to Nancy Vanderpool of the IFCH. The Monday and Wednesday dinners will continue, and volunteers will offer meals Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The effort is a pilot program, Dammann said, with organizers and a soon-tobe hired meal coordinator keeping track of how many people come to the dinners and who they are. “If it is a success in terms of helping people, it will proceed, she said. Maaz said he is pleased that VSSN is beginning to

meet its goal. “This is a great opportunity for the Vashon community to show its love for each other, which it has a great capacity to do, he said. “This is not about raising money. This is about reaching out a hand to neighbors. Indeed, for this new effort to run smoothly, Dammann said, more Islanders will need to extend that helping hand, as more volunteers are needed. She hopes anyone interested — families, individuals and other clubs or groups — will step up. At this stage, volunteers will offer not only their services but the food for the meals, as well. This is the way the interfaith council dinners work now, rather like a potluck open to the community. But the approach has financial implications for volunteers, an issue that has been discussed repeatedly, Dammann said. The answer so far, she noted, is to involve many people so that the grocery bill does not become burdensome. Yvonne Pitrof, executive director of the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank, said she understands the program is just in its beginning stages but has questions about its sustainability in its current form. The meals will rely heavily on volunteers, she noted, and there is no support infrastructure in place, such as a storage facility

or funding for food. It is a process, she said, and it will take some time to create the capacity to access resources and to make it into a program with a sustainable structure. She also stressed that not everyone who would benefit from the meals will attend. “Some go, some don’t, she said. “There are a whole lot of subtleties there. Despite her cautionary notes, Pitrof said she believes many Islanders could benefit from the meals. “There is no question about need, she said. “We see it. Indeed, so far this year the food bank has served 1,241 people, she said, a little more than 10 percent of Vashon’s population. That number breaks down to 602 families and 343 children. Every month so far this year, Pitrof added, the food bank has served an average of 81 new people — a consider-

ably higher figure than in the past, when it served 16 to 30 new people each month. At VYFS, where the agency is also seeing growth in the number of low-income families it’s serving, Maaz tells a similar story. More than 50 percent of the families with children who attend Vashon Kids, a before- and after-school program, receive scholarships. This year, he added, the agency will likely provide some 2,000 vouchers — equating to $40,000 — for financial assistance for a variety of urgent needs. And in the counseling program, therapists are serving a high number of people with Medicaid, which only people with very low incomes are eligible for. Speaking about need on the Island, Maaz said, “It is everywhere. The recession has had far-reaching effects, he noted, with several of the agency’s clients affected by

Mildred Louise Bettise Mildred Louise Bettise, age 91, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully on September 2, 2011 in Renton. She was born in Carthage, Missouri, May 28, 1920. There she met and fell in love with Walter Raymond Bettise whom she married in 1938 and spent 58 happy years. They relocated to Seattle where they both worked for Boeing. After living in Edmonds and Renton, their mutual love of water led them to live on a boat for 10 years before settling on Vashon Island where they spent their remaining years. Milly spent the last 10 years of her life traveling with her companion Don Tonkin. They enjoyed cruising the world and had many adventures together. Milly loved to read, spend time with her family, and volunteered at Granny’s Attic for nearly 30 years where she made some of her dearest friends. She called Granny’s her lifeline. Milly is survived by her daughter Cheryl Krieg (Jack); grandchildren, Lisa Portin (Mark), Jeff Krieg (Traci), Diana Beaulaurier (Paul), and Karyn Higgins (Dennis); great-grandchildren, Brittney, Christopher, Sarah, Jarid, Haley, Kyla, Emma and her sister Vivian Seidner of Elk City, Oklahoma. lost jobs, reduced hours or reduced wages. And at IFCH, President Emma Amiad recently said the group will likely administer some $45,000 worth of assistance this year, with joblessness and medical expenses in particular taking their toll on Island families. For her part, Dammann said she knows people who could benefit from the Island’s free meals but who don’t go, sometimes because they know people worse off than they are. With these new meals in place, she

hopes Islanders who could benefit will attend, enabling them to stretch their personal budgets farther, especially to cover their housing expenses. “The message is that everyone is welcome, she said. Dammann and the other organizers do not know how many people to expect at first and believe the number will grow as word spreads. “If everybody showed up on the Island who needs help, it would be quite something to see how much need there is, she said.

wonderful, wonderful program. At issue, in part, is who controls what was long known as Vashon Junior Civic Ballet (VJCB) — its founder and artistic director Betsy Frazee or the board of directors, newly chaired by Kamela Trujillo. To hear Trujillo explain the situation, the board decided to replace Frazee as the artistic director after she announced her resignation and walked out of a stormy meeting in July. Frazee, for her part, said the board couldn’t remove her because it’s her company and the board is simply advisory; instead, she said, she decided to form a new board and demanded that the “hostile board, as she calls it, relinquish several set designs, costumes and the company’s name. Trujillo’s group renamed itself, calling

the program Vashon Island Community Ballet, turned over several of the items Frazee wanted and, with the park district’s blessing, began to ready itself for this fall’s regimen of rehearsals leading to its winter performance. But as the dispute grew more intense — and the Park District’s effort at pulling both sides together for mediation faltered — the public agency decided it would sever ties with what had been a long-standing park program. Classes, once taught by Frazee and now taught by her long-time assistant Kim Gallo, continue to be offered through the park district. “There’s been a lot of drama, said a clearly exasperated Susan McCabe, program coordinator for the Vashon Park District, who added that people on both sides of the issue have raised their voices at her over the course of the dispute. “It’s not our place to be settling a dispute between these two groups, McCabe added.

“That’s what they’re having trouble accepting. ‌ This is an internal conflict, and they need to settle it.â€? Frazee, 64, a colorful and animated fixture in Vashon’s dance scene, has long had both admirers and critics. While some have been frustrated by her quirky personality and the chaotic nature of her rehearsals, others call her gifted for the way she is able to incorporate dancers of different ages and skill levels into a performance, creating a program premised on support and egalitarianism rather than competition. “I think it’s a horrible, horrible loss to Vashon,â€? parent Julie Shannon said of the park district’s decision to cancel its contract with the program. Frazee, she added, “is a genius. ‌ I love the lady.â€? Trujillo, whose four children have danced with VJCB for years, said she also believes in the program, with its egalitarian approach and the fact that everyone who signs up — including children with disabilities — can

participate in The Nutcracker. “This program is totally different from anything else on the Island. ‌ The point of this company is not to turn out professional dancers but to foster a love of dance,â€? she said. Conflicts arose this summer, however, over what started out as an innocuous request by Christine Juarez, the director of Vashon Allied Arts’ ballet program. Juarez, who also puts on a Nutcracker performance, was struggling with her wintertime schedule and asked Vashon Junior Civic Ballet if she could swap dates at the Vashon High School theater, which is in near-constant demand during much of December. Trujillo said the switch in dates didn’t seem to make a difference, so she emailed the board suggesting VJCB agree to the swap. Unbeknownst to Trujillo, however, Frazee met with Juarez on her own and 4503: $0/5*/6&4 /&95 1"(&

asked Juarez for a $300 donation to VJCB for the switch; Frazee thought it was a reasonable request, since, under the arrangement, VJCB would give up 10 days and end up with seven. “I said to Christine, ‘Because we’d being losing some revenue, if you could make us whole, that would help.’ We’d lose maybe $300. I just threw it out there. She wasn’t offended at all, Frazee recalled. Juarez agreed. “We were in a position where our dates weren’t working, so VAA was willing to bend over backwards to accommodate them, she said. Some board members, however, were appalled. In an email to Frazee, copied to the rest of the board, Trujillo said it seemed like “extortion, since Juarez had said she’d have to cancel her show if she couldn’t find another date. There was no “documentable harm in trading dates, Trujillo wrote, adding that the request for money seemed petty. “We have all been working very hard to rebrand ourselves and encourage new dancers to participate, but they will not come if the word on Vashon is that we took money from (the Blue Heron) because we felt slighted, Trujillo wrote. Two days later, at a lengthy board meeting at Trujillo’s house on July 23, the situation erupted. According to a five-page outline of events that Trujillo and four other board members emailed to parents of dancers in the program, board members tried to vote to not accept the funds but “were inter-

rupted with personal attacks and told there was no need for a board. Frazee, according to both sides in the dispute, called for the board’s dissolution at the July 23 meeting — a move, according to Trujillo, the board reluctantly agreed to. But a few days later, McCabe, at the park district, told Trujillo that Frazee couldn’t dissolve the board without park district involvement because of the program’s $4,000 in reserves, funds the park district holds for the program. What’s more, McCabe told Trujillo the board would have to distribute the assets under state guidelines for dissolving a nonprofit; even as an advisory board, it had to function like a nonprofit board and couldn’t just walk away from the situation, McCabe told the group.. Trujillo and the other parents on what was then the VJCB board got together a few days later and decided to move forward with the program — but without Frazee as the artistic director, according to Trujillo’s five-page outline. Instead, the group hired Gallo as artistic director and began the work of establishing itself as a nonprofit. Frazee, meanwhile, told McCabe and Braicks she was done with the program and was stepping down altogether — prompting the park district to post a tribute to Frazee noting her departure on its website. But Frazee disputes that description of the events, saying she resigned from teaching classes but not serving as the company’s artistic director. She demanded that

“I have paperwork that shows I’m a sole proprietorship. I’m trademarked, Frazee said. “The park district created the situation, and now they don’t have the cojones to stand up and recognize they made a mistake. She’s also angry at Trujillo and the other parents, adding that the dispute has destroyed a long-running program. “It’s just an absolute tragedy for the kids, she said. But McCabe said the park district felt it had to walk away from the two factions and cancel the program, especially after its suggestion for mediation went nowhere. (Trujillo’s group said it had nothing to mediate, while Frazee’s side didn’t take any steps toward trying to make such a process take place, McCabe said.) McCabe said the park district consulted its lawyer, in part because of Frazee’s mention of a potential lawsuit — but it wasn’t the threat of legal action that triggered the park district’s decision. “It’s that there’s such a split in the dance community, and the dispute is so vehement, she said. LuAnn Branch, who chairs the park district board, met with Frazee and some of the parents who support her in August and, after realizing the depth of the differences, agreed with the decision to cancel the program. But she said she’s sorry that it’s come to this and hopes the dispute will eventually be resolved. “I think it’s just sad all the way around, she said.

the article on the website be taken down, McCabe said. And in mid-August, after the park district signed a new contract with Trujillo’s group, Frazee told McCabe and Trujillo she was forming a new board helmed by parent Michael Goth under the VJCB name and would begin preparing for a December production. After several more back-and-forth discussions and after Frazee said she had contacted a lawyer and was considering a lawsuit, the park district cancelled its contract with Trujillo’s group, releasing the dates that had been reserved for its Nutcracker performance in the high school theater. The park district’s decision came a few days before casting and rehearsals were to begin for The Nutcracker. Trujillo, in an interview, said she understands the reason for the park district’s decision and adds that she and her colleagues on the board have tried hard to keep the dispute from becoming personal. But she added that she’s unhappy with Frazee and her supporters and the way they’ve comported themselves through the course of the conflict. “This whole thing has been a shock to us and really disappointing, she said. “They’ve put these families in the middle. For her part, Frazee blames the park district for its handling of the dispute, saying that McCabe and others exacerbated the situation by giving Trujillo what Frazee calls “false information.

Randi Girl comes by her name honestly. Last year, she showed up with four kittens at the Country Store. After the kittens were weaned, she took off not to be seen again for months. Late this summer, she showed up once again at the country store with four more kittens in tow. We rounded her up this time along with her kittens. Randi is now spayed and getting quite used to living the life of luxury indoors snuggled up in her favorite chair. There is no more scrounging around for this girl. She is around 3 years old.

Miss Kitty had to get the heck outta Dodge when her owner moved to the desert in Arizona. Miss Kitty is at VIPP waiting for her new gig. Miss Kitty always sports her make-up and her spectacular outfit just so. She loves to be brushed. She is retired from her saloon keeping days and she is looking for a great home to snuggle up on a lap. Date of entry to VIPP 3/25/11

Tinkerbell is a girl who was

attached to her old stomping grounds and when her owner moved, Tinkerbell kept flying back to her old home. After she returned the third time, she came to VIPP. Tinkerbell does not mind being an indoor cat and that is what she is looking for now so that she doesn’t have a chance to take a hike. Tinker can be startled by loud noises and sudden movements so she would be best in a quiet home where she can sleep on the bed.

regional landscape. There is nothing similar to this place for fifty miles in any direction: Vashon has pastoral areas similar to Lopez; there are wildly verdant rain forests reminiscent of coastal wilderness; there is little traffic (except when the ferry off loads), and people tend to say, “Hi, to you, whether they know you or not. There are only two shopping malls (located in the town core) and no places where the houses are exactly like the next door neighbor’s. The reason for this is that the Island petitioned King County to be zoned rural in the early 1970’s, so in many regards, large-scale development froze at that point. Vashon has many happy secrets that are not apparent when you are shopping in stores on the one-block-long main street. To discover the wonderful hidden qualities that Vashon-Maury Island has to offer, contact Windermere Vashon, to speak to a real estate professional who understands everything from schools and septic systems to opera and metal artists. Enjoy the benefits of working with an agent who really knows Vashon!
