The John Danz building has gone through multiple transformations over the years. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, it was one of the “Big Four� – the local, go-to theaters for big blockbusters, along with Northgate, the Cinerama and Southcenter. Later, it was taken over by other businesses: Good Guy’s and then Underhill’s Furniture. Now, the building has gained a new tenant, the Bellevue Mars Hill Church, previously housed in Eastside Christian School’s gym.

Thomas Hurst, executive pastor of the Bellevue church, said it’s been exciting to move into a building with such a rich history – and in the heart of downtown, no less. While “Mars Hill� can sometimes be synonymous with “Ballard,� where the church’s main campus is located, Hurst said the Bellevue location is different than the Ballard building’s dark curtains and lighting. “This building is geared toward who we are here in Bellevue,� Hurst said. “It’s wide open space and windows. It was designed very intentionally and to be very welcoming.� Such an urban environment is a big deal. It means the church will be easily
accessible, and “have the opportunity to reach thousands with the gospel of Jesus Christ,� Hurst said. “We’re not just looking to be in the city; we want to be a part of, and be a servant to, the city.� When the Bellevue church first opened in October 2007, only 200 people attended. Now, the congregation has grown to 1,300 members. Last Sunday, Hurst said 1,700 people attended the “soft opening� in the new space, which was primarily to make sure everything would go smoothly this weekend, with its grand opening Sunday. The ballots have arrived in voters’ homes and local candidates are making that final push to get votes. Political signs populate yards, and fliers are coming in the mail. The money for that has to come from somewhere. Each candidate for Bellevue City Council has received hundreds of donations from individuals and companies, all under the watchful eye of the state’s Public Disclosure Commission. PDC spokeswoman Lori Anderson said individual campaign donations are capped at $800 each for the primary and general election. Candidates are able to spend as much as they want of their own money on their campaigns, but if they’d like to recoup any of that money later on, they may reclaim only $4,700. Political Action Committees (PACs) can raise as much money as they want, but they are still limited to a maximum donation to each candidate. However, they are allowed to spend as much as they want on behalf of a candidate or group of candidates as long as they don’t coordinate with the candidate. Each Bellevue City Council candidate has reported receiving donations from PACs, and a number of PACs have reported independent spending on behalf of candidates. The Eastside Leadership Committee received a total of $69,000 from three donors - Bellevue developer Kemper Freeman, a supporter of council candidates Patti Mann, Aaron Laing and Michelle Hilhorst; Issaquah developer Skip Rowley and Robert Wallace, whose son, Kevin, serves as a councilmember. On the other side, Bellevue Firefighters, Fuse Washington and light-rail advocate Move Bellevue Forward have spent more than $32,000 to help John Stokes, Claudia Balducci and John Chelminiak. Unlike the $800 candidate limits, donors can give as much as they want to a PAC in the early days of a campaign. But within three weeks of elections, donors may only give $5,000 to a PAC, a reason some PACs form just before the three-week deadline. The much-anticipated Tateuchi Center is $2 million closer to reality. Microsoft partnered with Kemper Development on Friday to announce the donation of $1 million each toward the performing arts center. The two companies have a long history of collaboration, but they have built competing stances on Tim Eyman’s tolling Initiative 1125, of which Freeman is the principal backer. But the two sides came together for a cause that transcends politics. “There are some ties in the community that are deeper than any single issue, and this is certainly one of them,� said Microsoft General Counsel and Executive Vice President Brad Smith. The announcement came on the first floor of the Bellevue Hyatt Regency, only feet from the future location of the center. People can visit a preview center that shows models, drawings and information about the center. The center has now raised $62 million, said Tateuchi Executive Director John Haynes. He added the total fundraising goal for the project is $160 million. Once that money is raised, the center will be nearly shovel-ready. Design of the project has been completed, and the center is moving through the permitting process with the city. Both Kemper Development and Microsoft have been heavy donors to the project. In
2002, Freeman donated $8 million worth of land for the project, and has been a proponent for years. Microsoft donated $1 million to the project in 2006, and an additional $100,000 in 2008. The lion’s share of the money came from a $25 million naming rights donation from the Tateuchi Foundation. Freeman said during the announcement that this money very easily could have gone into their respective political campaigns, but it wouldn’t have done any good for the public. “Political debate and discourse is a normal and healthy part of our political system, however, we must not lose track of our shared priorities in the process,� Freeman said. “Today we have chosen to make a commitment to the Tateuchi Center of Bellevue instead of making additional investments on opposing sides of a political campaign.� The center will feature a 2,000-seat concert hall as well as a smaller 250-seat cabaret. Organizers say it will bring ballet and orchestra acts to the Eastside, serving as a signature arts project, as well as an indirect transportation project by keeping people off the highways in peak hours to see shows in Seattle. “This metro area is too big, too dense and too spread out for it to be served only by cultural organizations that reside in downtown Seattle,� Haynes said.

Downtown transportation open house set Tuesday

With light rail, “RapidRide” buses, a new floating bridge and changes on Interstate 405 to affect how people get to and through downtown Bellevue, the city has launched an effort to identify complementary transportation improvements that would support downtown growth. Residents and others interested in downtown mobility can offer input about transportation issues they want addressed at an open house and “scoping” meeting from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall. Pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motorists are invited. They can look at mobility topic displays and ask staff questions from 4:30-5 p.m. Staff will make a presentation from 5-5:30, followed by an hour of table discussions about each mode of transportation. Targeted for completion in early 2013, an updated Downtown Transportation Plan could set the stage for projects as big
as new highway overpasses and streets and as small as lane modifications and tweaks in traffic signal timing. The plan is intended to be “multi-modal,” addressing needs not only for cars, but also for transit, pedestrians and cyclists. Transportation projects for downtown are outlined in the city’s Downtown Subarea Plan, which was adopted in 2004, before East Link light rail or RapidRide buses were envisioned and a plan for transforming the Bel-Red area had been drafted. City planners are updating the Downtown Transportation Plan to address the changing transportation and development landscape. In the fall of 2010 the City Council approved funding for the plan update, with the Transportation Commission to guide the effort. Steve McConnell best for Bellevue School Board BY STEVE MCCONNELL
Today the Bellevue Reporter includes a retraction of false statements that it printed about me last week. How the Bellevue Reporter allowed so many falsehoods to find their way into a single article I do not know, and where the author originally heard those false statements is a question worth pondering. But those are topics for another time. In this article I Steve McConnell want to focus on how to make the Bellevue School District the best district possible. I believe we can improve our district through a positive program focusing on Accountability, Openness and Community Engagement. In the area of Accountability, the school board should be defining comprehensive, measurable goals at the district level. These goals should be widely published, shared, and promoted. School board meetings should frequently focus on reviewing progress toward goals. I would like to see the goals include parent satisfaction,
teacher satisfaction, college entrance rates, workforce entry rates, and measures of academic performance. In the area of Openness, I have proposed publishing an easy-to-understand scorecard that reports district performance to the public without bias or spin, especially focusing on progress toward goals. Our community should be able to see easily whether our superintendent and district as a whole are moving forward, backward, or standing still. I believe strongly that this information should be publicly available, so I have filed public records requests and published district performance information myself at www. bellevueschools.net. In the area of Community Engagement, since June I have hosted nine Town Hall meetings and coffee talks open to the public. With 18,000 students in our district, we can’t reach the entire population through inperson meetings, so I’ve also reached out online via Facebook, a website, and an education blog that details my positions on school issues. I’ve also answered hundreds of emails and had many one-on-one discussions. As a result of this accessibility, I’m the only
candidate who’s been endorsed by the Bellevue Education Association. Some people might say, “Our schools are good. Maybe we should leave well enough alone.� I wondered that too, so prior to my final decision to run for school board I reviewed the school board meeting minutes for every meeting since my opponent was appointed. What I found was that the school board had not engaged in a single review of district-level performance data or district-level progress toward goals in that period. No board member had advocated for a scorecard or anything similar. No board member had suggested engaging the community through town hall meetings, coffee talks, surveys, focus groups, or any similar program. Our current board members have many strengths, but the board needs leadership in the areas of accountability, openness, and community engagement. I will bring a passionate focus on those issues to the board – which will help ensure Bellevue’s legacy of excellence continues. John Stokes is a retired attorney who is steeped in public and community service in Bellevue. We think that is a plus for the council. He’s a member of the Parks and Community Services Board – important given the city’s strong emphasis on parks. He also has spent time in Bellevue School District groups John Stokes and committees. While not directly related to city issues, they do show a desire to put in the time to benefit the public. He also has some fiscal credentials from his membership on the Bellevue School District’s fiscal advisory committee. His opponent, Aaron Laing, also an attorney, has been active in Bellevue’s ongoing discussion over light rail. He deserves applause for his efforts given that this will be expensive for the city and those affected homeowners. His priorities of preserving Bellevue’s high quality of life, restoring collegiality to the council and prioritizing the budget in tight economic times are on the mark. We’d like to see Laing become involved in city boards and commissions
and keep his political drive alive.
Position 3: John Chelminiak John Chelminiak brings experience and perspective in his re-election bid. Both are important for serving on the City Council of a city as large as Bellevue. A key goal of Chelminiak is economic development, a top topic for Bellevue if it hopes to maintain its quality of life, much less grow in the future. John Chelminiak His prior experience in other governmental organizations gives him a regional perspective and contacts outside Bellevue’s borders. His opponent, Michelle Hilhorst, brings a strong business background to the race from her position as Information Technology Operations
Principal Program Manager at AT&T. That’s always a plus to bring to government. Like Chelminiak, she puts an emphasis on economic development. Like others, she, too, wants more civility on the council. As noted about Laing, we encourage Hilhorst to get more deeply involved with Bellevue government to round out her resume as a future candidate.

Save our hospital with vote for Heuschel Valley Medical Center is at a turning point. There are those who would change the hospital’s status from public to private. And there are those who would cancel its new alliance with UW Medical. Mary Alice Heuschel is running for the vacant seat on the hospital commission. She is strongly committed to keeping the hospital’s public status and implementing the alliance with UW to its full potential. Look for Mary Alice on your ballot under “Public Hospital No. 1.” Mary Alice is the Superintendent of Schools in Renton. This year, she was selected as the Superintendent of the Year in Washington for her work in that position, and was further recognized as one of the top four superintendents in the entire U.S. She will bring tremendous skills to the position of hospital commissioner, including personnel skills, cost control and managing large budgets. Collectively, these executive management skills are the essence of the position. Medical skills are not needed, and in fact could be construed as a conflict of interest. Mary Alice is dedicated to education, but believes there must be a strong link between education and health if we are to achieve the best of both worlds. She is the only candidate who can establish that link.

Laing worthy of trust When was the last time you truly trusted a candidate for Bellevue City Council? I have lived in Bellevue since 1964, so I am well versed in Bellevue politics, and I trust and advocate for Aaron Laing because he possesses the utmost in intelligence and integrity. Aaron is a soccer coach, a father and a community advocate. He’s also one of the smartest men I know; he can quickly grasp the underlying meaning of complex landuse and transportation documents. He extensively researches issues, and conveys the key points of convoluted issues accurately. I know Aaron well enough to have strong faith that he will be a fair and accomplished professional as a council member. I also know that he is guided by his own moral compass; he will make decisions on his own. Our city needs Aaron’s expertise and judgment; the citizens of Bellevue would benefit greatly by his service.

I encourage my fellow Bellevue citizens to support Michelle Hilhorst for Bellevue City Council, Position 3. Michelle is a strong leader, smart, wellspoken and a hard worker. She is a person of integrity who I would trust to guide our city. She will bring a sense of fairness and justice for the people of Bellevue. She may not have political experience, but I view that as a strength – she will come in with fresh eyes and will question the status quo. She has deep experience in business, with a strong skill set in finance and hi-tech that is missing on the current council. If elected, I am certain that Michelle will be an asset to our city.
The endorsement of Betsy Johnson is an example of biased journalism by the Bellevue Reporter. You cited facts that support your endorsement and left out anything that would reflect positively on Steve McConnell. One fact: He is a local business owner and parent of two children, one of them a special needs child. I also take issue with the statement, “Schools here are considered some of the best in the nation.” By whom? And by what standard are we judging? As the parent of a recent Newport High School graduate, I can tell you from experience the Bellevue School District does not care about any child who doesn’t help them get the “best in the nation” rating. A prime example is my child, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 17. None of her teachers in elementary, middle or high school connected her school problems with special needs. The Bellevue School Board is so focused on their “best in the nation” status that any child not helping them achieve it is intentionally “left behind.” We need new leadership on the school board, people who understand that the purpose of our schools is to educate our children at whatever level they function.

Hague has a proven record I have been an observer and political activist in this state since 1967. I have worked for good candidates, “D’s”, “R’s” “I’s”, and non-partisan races. My question as a PCO concerning current races: Why would you give your vote to a candidate who allows his campaign to run a very, very negative campaign against his own party’s candidates and the other parties in a primary race, and again, in the General Election? In the King County Council, Sixth Disemphasizes preserving the city’s quality of life. She has a strong commitment to making sure that Sound Transit uses the existing Burlington Northern alignment for its light-rail line. While that could have been an attractive option, Sound Transit is putting the line elsewhere and the better
trict race – a bi-partisan race (i.e., no D’s or R’s), in the primary, a “newcomer” candidate attacked both opponents, traditionally members of his own party as well as those of another party, via mailings, robo-calls, and ads. It was, and is now, just wrong. This campaign is one of the most negative I have seen in all of my 45 years in Washington state. Why vote for a candidate who allows his campaign team to conduct this type of campaign, rather than support Jane Hague who has a long and proven record, as a volunteer, member of the Bellevue City Council, County administration and County councilmember, on education, services, parks, open space, transit, budget reform, and reaching across party lines in a bi-partisan manner.

Stokes has wisdom, common sense I have volunteered alongside Bellevue City Council candidate John Stokes for many years. His wisdom and long-term vision are matched by his common sense ... and sense of humor when a light touch is needed to help disparate people find consensus on tough, complicated issues. As I write this, my teenage son is driving from Bellevue into Seattle. I’m looking forward to the day when other teenagers can use safe and convenient light rail instead. Mann will bring more collegial environment During the last year we have read in the press that the Bellevue City Council is becoming more contentious. I don’t like hearing that, but it doesn’t take much to find out why. I often watch the council sessions and find that Claudia Balducci has an unnecessary jab or an insulting comment toward her colleagues and mayor as she becomes frustrated with those on the council who oppose her positions. On Oct. 17, as the council determined that they did not have the votes to issue an opinion on an upcoming initiative, it was reported that she “criticized fellow council members” and “blamed” others – “how far this council has drifted from being willing to be leaders on transportation.” This has got to stop. Please vote to replace Balducci with Patti Mann. Patti is rated “outstanding” and has the true abilities to “play well with others” and discuss critical, complex matters in a council option appears to mitigating the impacts of light rail.
Position 7: Jennifer Robertson Jennifer Robertson is running unopposed for good reason. She came on to the City Council in 2009, but before that had served on the city’s planning commission

Reject Sound Transit’s power play It is appropriate that at this critical time when some members of our City Council are supporting Sound Transit and its preferred East Link route that our voters ballots have just arrived. Sound Transit has presented the city with a draft memorandum of understanding that details a plan for implementing its preferences for East Link in Bellevue. Sound Transit is demanding they be given a totally free hand to proceed as they determine with no legal basis for any challenge by the city or it’s citizens. This is another example of a governmental entity trying to force it’s decision against the will of the people, and obligate Bellevue citizens for millions of dollars in additional costs and taxes. I urge councilmembers to reject this power play by Sound Transit.

Fire your cartoonist In this era of deep recession, cartoonist Frank Shiers sees fit to blame the unemployed for the shortage of available jobs. On behalf of everyone out there who has been desperately searching for work, ANY work, I say shame on you, Mr. Shiers. What’s next, holding the homeless cats (page 1, CAT-astrophy) responsible for the lack of homes? I can think of an excellent way to teach Mr. Shiers a bit of compassion – fire him. Make both sides happy The congressional panel charged with producing a deficit reduction plan should consider eliminating the deductibility of health care insurance. Doing so would reduce the deficit by $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion over 10 years, a number that would surely please conservatives. Those 47 percent who currently pay no income tax would see little or no increase, while the highest income earners would pay up to 35 percent of the insurance costs. Surely that would please the liberals. Both sides would also benefit with more public awareness of the health care insurance costs potentially leading to more choices for both employer and employee.

The face of Crossroads is undergoing big changes, but the character remains the same. Numerous new stores and attractions have made their way into Crossroads’ centerpiece complex with the goal of making the diverse mall an attraction for visitors from all over the state. “When people come to Crossroads we want them to have a unique experience,” said Chris Cole, president of Sher Partners, which owns the mall. And unique it is. The mall’s more than 20 independent food vendors that serve cuisine from every corner of the world are enough of a draw on their own. But throw in the larger-than-life chess set and the performance stage, and Crossroads becomes a one-stop shop for entertainment, groceries, shopping and lunch. Add to that the debut of Stone Gardens Climbing Gym, Bellevue’s first branch of Famous Footwear, Peaks Frozen Yogurt, Sally Beauty, and a number of enlarged, remodeled stores and Crossroads’ evolution continues. “It’s the best I’ve seen it,” said Nathan Jackson, a former Bellevue resident and manager of the Crossroads Famous Footwear, which has been open for about two weeks. To Cole, keeping Crossroads a community landmark represents the most important goal. He said the process of finding new tenants is molded by the mall’s identity. Nowhere is that identity clearer than at the door. Under the funky-font Crossroads sign, the first stops are a Half Price Book store and the extensive Daily Planet News stand, leading into the Food Court. To Terry Brainard, an employee at the Daily Planet, this spot most exemplifies the identity of Crossroads. “This kind of sets up that this is a community where conversation, education and

Lobsang Dargey’s proposed Potala Village in Kirkland has the community in an uproar. CARRIE WOOD, Kirkland Reporter complete, such projects as Potala Village in Everett or Kirkland, given that countless other developers have crashed in the economic downturn that began in 2008? Dargey says that’s because of the values he’s adopted in his life, which include disdaining many of the trappings of wealth, such as big houses and fancy cars. “We live in one of the best places on earth,� he says of the United States. “We have no appreciation of what we have. Before I think of myself, I think of others first. Why do we need five or six cars to live? We don’t need 6,000 square feet for one person. I do this work because of what I like. I’m not interested in making huge money, I just want people employed.� As for the objections to the proposal, Dargey says the real concerns are based on fear. “They don’t like change,� he said. “It’s not just me. Bellevue resident Lobsang Dargey has Kirkland in a near frenzy. Dargey, 37, wants to build a place called Potala Village, a four-story project with 143 units and 316 underground parking stalls, along the Kirkland waterfront at 10th Avenue South and Lake Street South. City files are filled with letters and emails protesting the project. It’s criticized as too big, too dense, not fitting the neighborhood, and likely to cause traffic problems. Just another developer focused only on himself? It hardly seems so. It’s almost impossible to overstate how unusual Dargey’s life has been. He’s from Tibet. He studied to be a monk. He didn’t come to the United States until 1997. He didn’t speak English. By 2004, he was married. His wife, Tami, is the sister of Andre Agassi, the famous tennis player. His wife is a cancer survivor. They live modestly, in a 1954 rambler on Northeast 28th Place off Bellevue Way. He works modestly, in an office above a food co-op in downtown Everett. where Dargey wants to build. It’s now mostly a dirt lot. The Kirkland Kiwanis used to sell Christmas trees there. Dargey says the uproar of citizens’ complaints aren’t true. “We’re building it within code. We’re not asking for a variance,� he said. The property has been for sale for years, he adds, and many other developers tried to buy it, but none were successful. Dargey says that the

Football Scoreboard Interlake (3-5, 3-3) erased any doubt about earning a 2A playoff berth on Friday, defeating Liberty 33-28 for its third straight win. Jordan Todd finished with 241 yards on the ground and two scores on 25 carries and also took a second half kickoff 85 yards for a score. Coach Jason Rimkus called it “a great team win”, saying “It took every one of our kids to pull it off.” Bellevue (8-0, 6-0) trailed 3-0 to Mount Si before scoring 35 unanswered points on rushing touchdowns from Joey Moore, Ari Morales and Andy Boulware and a scoring toss from senior quarterback Tyler Hasty to Nathan DeRider. The Wolverines’ defense came up with three fourth down stops of the Wildcats and Devin Murphy came up with a crucial first half interception. Sammamish (1-7, 1-5) lost to Mercer Island 45-6 in front of the Islanders’ homecoming crowd. The Totems scored their only points in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard strike from Austin Lee to James Adams. Newport (4-4, 1-3) was defeated by Issaquah 41-28. The Knights led early on a touchdown run from Isaac Dotson, but watched as Jack Gellatly and Reed Peterson alternated on trips to the endzone on the next five scores to help the Eagles run away and hide. Bellevue Christian (4-3) trailed throughout in a 48-14 loss to Tacoma Baptist as the Crusaders’ Zach Finley scored three first half touchdowns to give his team a 35-6 lead at the break.
Stone Gardens brings over 21,000 square feet of rock climbing terrain indoors BY JOSH SUMAN jsuman@bellevuereporter.com
From the base of the 40-foot high climbing walls inside Stone Gardens, the view is intimidating and inviting at the same time. The walls themselves were manufactured in Bulgaria by Walltopia and shipped across the globe complete with an assembly crew that remained on-site for six weeks completing construction. In total, Stone Gardens offers more than 21,000 square feet of climbing terrain, nearly double the amount of the franchise’s original location in Seattle. That includes a kids area that features both a pirate ship with a fire pole and castle that provides access to a twisting slide, all designed for climbing. “What we try to do with our youth classes is create age-appropriate instruction,” Climbing School Director Jeremy Bowler said. “That ranges from teaching them how to put on their own harness to tying their own knots and learning safety checks. And having fun in the process, of course.” The youth area is also available to rent for children’s parties and other functions. Once youth climbers grow weary of the pirate ship and pizza parties, they can join the Stone

Gardens junior climbing team, which is offered for kids age 10-19. The team, which has around 14 members at the Bellevue location and 12 more in Seattle, trains twice per week for around three hours per session and competes against other climbing teams from around the region. One female climber from the team out of the Seattle location parlayed her experience on the Stone Gardens team all the way to a spot with the U.S. National Team. Then there’s the main stage. The majority of the mammoth facility’s climbing space is found in the top rope and lead areas and bouldering section. The top rope and lead area offers opposite facing, 40-foot high walls that feature overhangs, dozens of professionally set routes of varying difficulty and even a section of wall that can be adjusted up to 10 degrees inward and 15 degrees outward to accommodate a variety of skill levels. The bouldering area includes a top-out section as well and has “boulder problems” ranging from V-0 (moderate) to V-12 (very difficult). Nothing other than climbing shoes and some chalk (and of course, a waiver form) are required to take a run at bouldering, which is climbing at lower levels without a rope support. “I think we’ve done a good job with terrain,”

Bowler said. “It ranges from the most novice climbers to the most advanced.” Bowler said since the Crossroads location opened last weekend, clientele has ranged from some of the more experienced climbers in the Greater Seattle area to walk-ins off the street whose curiosity is peaked by the massive rock façade that frames the entrance. He hopes Stone Gardens becomes a training designation for climbers from around the Eastside who are relegated to indoor climbing during the prolonged colder, wetter seasons of the region. “A couple of our employees are top-level climbers and they love to train here,” Bowler said, adding that he oversees pre-training with all of his instructors and offers ongoing feedback for teaching climbing techniques. Stone Gardens also offers a variety of classes that cover everything from the basic necessities like tying proper climbing knots, gym safety and equipment introductions to private climbing lessons and specialized training in bouldering technique and advanced rope climbing. “Every introductory class has no more than four people,” Bowler said. “You get a lot of personal interaction with the instructor.”

Newport clinched the 4A KingCo regular season title Tuesday with a straight set win over Issaquah, led by 33 assists from Emmy Freed and 15 digs from Morgan Kraus. Anna Crabtree added nine kills and both Kelsey Davila and Casey Schoenlein tallied eight kills in the win. The Knights finished the regular season with a 9-1 conference mark and seven of those nine wins came in 3-0 decisions. The league tournament begins tomorrow against Ballard and two consecutive wins will earn Newport a state playoff berth.
BELLEVUE BOYS TAKE KINGCO X-C MEET Bellevue took the top two spots and six of the top eight to win the team scoring at the 3A KingCo cross country meet by 68 points over second-place Liberty. Bellevue High School band to lead Main Street parade today

A small-town feeling descends on Bellevue’s Main Street at 6 p.m. today when the 120-member Bellevue High School marching band leads the school’s annual homecoming parade. The community is invited to watch the parade of musicians, cheerleaders, drill team, class royalty, football players and floats, which starts at 100th Avenue Northeast and continues east on Main Street for five blocks, then turns south on 105th Avenue Northeast and continues to the school. Also marching in the parade will be the newly formed Bellevue High Alumni Band, which has former band students of all ages. The parade precedes the school’s homecoming football game, at 7 p.m. vs. Liberty High School.

More than 50 guests had the opportunity to enjoy a private luncheon Oct. 21 with Montreal-raised and now London-based fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu (his mother is English and his father is Turkish). This event took place at the home of Janet True, former president of PONCHO. Nordstrom flew Erdem in for the luncheon benefit that was followed by a trunk show with the designer at Bellevue Square Nordstrom Saturday. Erdem graduated with a Master’s from the Royal College of Art and launched his eponymous label in 2005 after working for a short time with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg in New York. Erdem is celebrated for his unique use of prints, lace and embroidery, which he custom creates digitally and has manufactured in textile mills both in London and in France. So, who is the Erdem woman?. “A clever person who probably cares little about the seasons. She has a lot of conviction and marches to her own drum,� Erdem said. As the models entered the room wearing his spring/
summer 2012 creations, his signature aesthetic became apparent – gracefully modern, extremely beautiful and romantically feminine. Erdem shared that the worldfamous London Savoy Hotel was his inspiration for this new collection, which was shown at that hotel in September. Erdem said the hotel's “incredible Edwardian and Art Deco interiors were influential in creating each garment.� You could visually understand his love for textiles: his own floral designs; French crepes, silks and antique lace from an old lace mill in France; washed chiffon; jersey knits; and lovely hand-embroidered tulle. His color palettes included soft pastels, white and neutrals. All of his silhouettes nicely formed the female body in a soft and feminine way. Accessories were minimal, but included graceful shoes in the same or complimentary fabric as the garment, along with his new line of Erdem sunglasses. It was truly a collection that every woman would love to wear and “be seen in.� Erdem’s fashion followers include the Duchess of Cambridge, Michelle Obama, Kiera Knightly, Chloe Sevigny, Sarah Jessica Parker and Julianne Moore. After last weekend, he will surely have a larger customer base in the Seattle area.

top community for youth again For a fifth time, a national children's advocacy group has included Bellevue on its list of 100 best communities for young people, an honor that comes with a $2,500 grant. Bellevue was cited for its top public schools and two city programs – Bellevue Youth Link and WrapAround Services. “We are so proud of Bellevue for being named one of the America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best again this year,� said Mayor Don Davidson. “This award recognizes the hard work of many community organizations and individuals who have dedicated their time and resources to make a difference in the lives of our young people.� Youth Link is a youth leadership program the city cosponsors with the school district. Wrap-Around Services is a collaboration with the school district, the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of Bellevue, United Way and other organizations to provide a network of resources for the students of Lake Hills and Stevenson elementary schools and Odle Middle School and their families. While the city has not yet determined how the grant will be spent, it is likely to be used for the Youth Link program.

Gay Hendrickson of Medina, WA, passed away September 30, 2011. Daughter of Edna Mae and Joseph Perrigo of the Perrigos who settled Redmond, WA, Gay lived many places from Ohio to Nova Scotia growing up, attending 12 different schools in 12 years. She married Ed Springman in Seattle in 1966, with his young sons Kurt and Glenn. Karl was born 2 years later. They traveled extensively, enjoying alpine skiing, water skiing, and Lake Sammamish. Gay was involved with the Seattle Children’s Home and St.Thomas Episcopal School, and was integral in launching the real estate firm named for her, Sherron Associates. The Springmans divorced in 1978. Gay married Jim Hendrickson in 1979. Jim had teens, Kristen and Laura, and the couple added a son, Michael, to the family. They often enjoyed Hawaii, camping, boating in the San Juan Islands, golf, and rousing pickleball games at their Clyde Hill home. Gay’s joys in life included large family gatherings to share a meal and play games, cooking, gardening and power boating. She was an excellent hostess with a quick sense of humor. She is remembered fondly by hundreds of families as Gay-Gay, for the home-based childcare she and Jim provided in Clyde Hill/Medina for 20 years. She is mourned by her husband of 32 years, Jim Hendrickson; children and spouses Kurt Springman (Cathy) of Bellevue, Laura Peterson (Dale) of Bothell, Glenn Springman (Seeley) of Santa Fe, NM, Kristen Giroux (Neil) of Seattle, Karl Springman (Kishiko) of Honolulu, HI, Michael Hendrickson (Brianna) of Kirkland; grandchildren Eric, Cory, Chelsea, Kristy, Sami, Elton, Skee, and Alex; father Joseph Perrigo ; sisters Margaret Ladkey and Esther Perrigo. His community service project involved organizing 14 scouts and adults who spent about 80 hours to paint the curbs that surrounded the parking lots at Christ the King Lutheran Church in the Eastgate area, add new parking stall striping and directional arrows to exit and enter the lot, and provide three clear disabled parking areas for those who need assistance. Engevik is a freshman at Sammamish High School and a member of Troop 438, chartered by Holy Cross Lutheran Church. at the University of Washington, has been admitted into Phi Sigma Colin Marshall Theta, the collegiate National Honor Society.
