of rubble was difficult, especially when he found a member of the firefighter family beneath the broken buildings. “You feel the lowest level of sadness you can feel,” he said. Langton said the level of destruction was something he had never seen before. “It was 16 acres of utter destruction,” he said. Langton, a logistics section chief at Ground Zero, said he didn’t allow his emotions to interfere with his work, but one early morning as he was driving to work, he couldn’t help from breaking down. At 3 a.m. in the pouring rain, he drove past a group of people cheering on the recovery crew, hoping they would find more people.
When 55-year-old Amy McGraw was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, she made sure the disruption to her life was minimal. The Redmond resident had a mastectomy in January 2003 and took two weeks to recover before returning to work as a first-grade teacher at St. Thomas School in Medina. She still had eight rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation treatment, but that only took her out of commission for a few days at a time, every other week. While some people in her situation would take things easy, McGraw only took as many days off as necessary. She said the eight hours she spent at school with her students helped keep her mind off the illness. “It was a time I didn’t have to think about it,” McGraw said. As a breast cancer survivor, she decided to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk for the first time in September 2008. “We had a team with my school and we had 13 people on the team,” she said. McGraw has done the walk every year since and will be participating for the fourth time in this year’s

POWERFUL REMINDER ‘Our true colors came out’ during the 9/11 recovery efforts
W
orking alongside fellow firefighters, an emotional storm struck Rudy Alvarado as he dug through the smoky rubble, looking for innocent victims and fallen heroes amid the loud noises of heavy machinery. First came the surge of heated hostility and then the painful sadness. But then he quickly shook off his strong feelings and focused on the task at hand. His job: “Go through the rubble and find people, find what we could,” he said. The former Redmond fire captain, along with four other Redmond fire personnel — Tom Langton, Stacey Baker, Mike Curtis and
Lafond Davis — were part of the recovery efforts following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Alvarado is now retired after 33 years with the Redmond Fire Department (RFD). Langton, now a captain, along with Baker and Davis, who are paramedics, still work for RFD and Curtis now serves for the Phoenix Fire Department. The emotional memories of their efforts will never fade and always seem to flood back this time of year. “That first night of work, the feeling that went through my body went from very angry to very sad, then I went into rescue mode,” said Alvarado, 59. He said digging through the 16 acres

It just overwhelmed me with the amount of hope people had.� It’s an experience that continues to have a profound impact on all the firefighters involved in the recovery efforts, just as it does for millions of Americans shaken by the 9/11 disaster. “It definitely all comes flooding back this time of year,� Langton said of the memories. “But it reminds me what we are all about. ... It reminded us we have a common purpose in this thing called freedom and sometimes we have to pay a really big price to maintain it.�
NATIONAL TASK FORCE Alvarado and Langton, along with Baker and Curtis, were deployed to New York on Sept. 18, 2001 as members of the state’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force (WATF-1), which is part of a collection of nationwide teams that respond to large-scale disasters. Davis, a Redmond firefighter and dog handler, and his dog, Sunny, were deployed to New York before that and worked with a team from Arizona, according to Langton. Alvarado was in Tacoma getting ready to teach a rescue class for disaster first-responders when he saw terrorist attacks on television. Alvarado, who worked the night shift, said the recovery work was an “emotional roller coaster.� One day he was digging through rubble, looking for bodies and another day he was being served lunch by Sigourney Weaver and meeting David Letterman. Alvarado spoke highly of his fellow firefighters and the unified recovery effort, calling his work at
Ground Zero “an honor.� “I saw what America is really about,� said Alvarado, who frequently wore a red, white and blue bandanna on his head during his service at Ground Zero. “Like any disaster, our true colors came out. That red, white and blue came out strong.�
MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE Redmond officials are asking residents to take a moment out of their Sunday morning to remember the lost lives and heroism of
the 9/11 tragedy 10 years ago. The Redmond City Council approved a resolution at Tuesday night’s meeting at City Hall encouraging all residents to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by observing a moment of remembrance at 10 a.m.. The resolution asks all residents to stop all work or other activity for at least one minute. “Cities are being called upon to ring bells and sound sirens for

one minute ... This will serve as a signal for people to stop and remember the people we lost and demonstrate the perseverance the American people have shown since that day,� Redmond Mayor John Marchione wrote in a Tuesday memo to City Council members. Redmond Police Chief Ron Gibson said 9/11 changed the face of public safety forever. “Now public safety in our country is thought of as the first line of defense in protecting our communities from not only criminal acts but acts of terrorism. ... Public safety employees are now responsible for being prepared for everything from community care taking efforts with little or no criminal nexus to acts of international terrorism. This can be a very challenging mandate for our public safety professionals,� Gibson said. Redmond Fire Chief Kevin Donnelly agreed, saying that while the arena of public safety has expanded, so too has the “awareness by the public of the role they must play in prevention and preparedness.� Donnelly said the country has become stronger in the face of this tragedy. “I am convinced that as a whole we are better prepared now than we were in September 2001,� Donnelly said. “That is not to say that all risk has been eliminated, but we are better prepared to collectively respond to emergencies, largely because of the awareness following the 9/11 tragedy.�

Faith communities to remember 9/11 with hope, healing Growing up in a military family, Mike Howerton developed an emotional bond with people who threaten their own lives to help others. “Every assignment could potentially be their last,� the Overlake Christian Church lead pastor said Wednesday morning. That bond is stronger than ever for Howerton, who will lead a special remembrance service, “9/11/11: Honor, Hope, Healing� on Sunday — the 10th anniversary of 9/11 — honoring those who lost their lives in the tragic terrorist attacks. “We want to honor those whose lives have been lost and those who put their lives on the line,� Howerton said. “We will talk about the healing and hope that we invited in after a tragic occurrence like this.� The service will feature a special montage video, celebrating the heroic acts of those first-responders who “were willing to rush in and help save lives while
everyone else was rushing out,� Howerton said. The response to the tragedy was a united one as first-responders from across the nation, including some from Redmond, came to the aid of the terrorist attack victims. “It was true unity in the face of tragedy,� Howerton said. Local firefighters and police officers have been invited to Sunday’s services, which will be at 9:20 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Howerton said he is expecting approximately 3,000 people for Sunday’s services. First responders, military personnel and National Guard in attendance will be asked to stand and be honored, Howerton said. “It will be somewhat moving,� he said of the services. “We want to take some time to celebrate our heroes.�
INTERFAITH REMEMBRENCE In addition, other Eastside faith communities, including Redmond-based Together We Build, will join in an interfaith remembrance event at the Kirk-
land Performance Center, which holds 402 people. “I hope it’s packed,� said the Rev. Marian Stewart of what her church, Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church, and more than 10 others are planning Sunday. This is the second year such an event has been held here. This year’s event is called Ashes to Hope: An Interfaith Observance of 9/11. About 300 people came last year. She said the concept, which is embracing a broad range of religions, from Lutherans and Mormons to Muslims and Jews, is to try to resolve differences and overcome ignorance. The session at the performance center, 350 Kirkland Ave., will be from 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday. Sponsoring organizations include the Northlake church, the IMAN Center of Kirkland, Temple B’Nai Torah, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Northshore United Church of Christ, the Woodinville

He’s not alone. The constant bickering and backstabbing that goes on in the nation’s capital is disgusting. The word“grandstanding”doesn’t come close to political jousting among the Senate, House and the president. The net result is that it is the average American who feels the hurt and pain. People do want jobs. Sadly, many people have given up after trying month after month, only to come up empty handed. Businesses, too, suffer in this stalled economy. They can’t get credit,

lympia still doesn’t get it. Four times the voters have approved initiatives requiring a two-thirds vote to raise taxes and a majority vote to increase fees. Four times. Yet despite 1053’s 64 percent “yes” vote last year, Olympia repeatedly violated it. Initiative 1125 closes loopholes they put in 1053. I-1125 requires, again, that fee increases be decided by elected representatives of the people, not unelected bureaucrats at state agencies. I-1125 ensures accountability and transparency. Voters overwhelmingly rejected a state income tax last year. How did Olympia respond? They started pushing “anything goes” tolls which would be even worse. In July, the Seattle Times reported: “After years of acting gingerly, the House Transportation Chair said the state may be ready as early as next year for tolled highways as a gridlike, interconnected system instead of being implemented piecemeal. This approach — toll all the major roads – was in a recent report for the Seattle Mayor.” The Seattle Weekly recently editorialized: “People of all political stripes are bound to feel under assault from the battery of tolls that are now under discussion. tarbucks CEO Howard Schultz has struck a strong chord in the country with his call for corporations to withhold campaign contributions from those in Congress until they get serious about fixing the deficit mess. We hope his effort continues to grow. Since starting this effort about four weeks ago, more than 100 business leaders – large and small – have signed on to Schultz’s two-part pledge: “To withhold political campaign contributions until a transparent, comprehensive, bipartisan debt-and-deficit package is reached that honestly, and fairly, sets America on a path to long-term financial health and security, and to do all we can to break the cycle of economic uncertainty that grips our country by committing to accelerate investment in jobs and hiring.” Schultz obviously has hit the bull’s-eye in his comments. Just last week it was reported that employers nationwide added no new jobs in August. In fact, total payrolls were unchanged, the first time since 1945 that the government reported a net job change of zero. And, the national unemployment rate stayed at 9.1 percent. “I love our country. And I am a beneficiary of the promise of America,”Schultz said in an open letter to the country. But, he continued, “I am very concerned that at times I do not recognize the America that I love.”

Let me say that again: 1125 simply reaffirms laws and the state constitution’s 18th amendment which have been protecting taxpayers for decades. Citizens have to follow the law and abide by the Constitution – the government should too. Politicians’ plans need to comply with the Constitution and voter-approved laws – that’s what 1125 requires them to do. Before this year’s session began, Governor Gregoire said, “I’m not gonna let 1053 stand in the way of me moving forward for what I think is right.” Voters approved Initiative 1053 by a huge margin – don’t let Olympia get away with violating it. Cookbook provides a look inside Frankie’s kitchen

Frankie Curtiss’ cookbook dream is finally a reality. The owner of Frankie’s Pizza and Pasta in downtown Redmond recently released his first cookbook, “Frankie: At Home in the Kitchen,” with recipes featuring colorful photos, wine pairings and “Frankie’s Tips.” “I’ve been wanting to do (a cookbook) forever,” he said. “It’s always been a dream of mine.” Redmond residents can check out the cookbook and meet Curtiss at a cookbook signing on Saturday from 3-6 p.m. at Frankie’s restaurant, located at 16630 Redmond Way. There will be another cookbook signing at the restaurant Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 5-8 p.m. In addition, Curtiss will be giving a chef demonstration at 10 a.m. at the Redmond Saturday Market Sept. 17. The cookbook features more than 100 recipes of appetizers, soup, salads, sandwiches, pizza, calzones, pasta, deserts and even beverages. Curtiss’ favorites include Pasta Bolognese, Chicken Marsala, Pizza Rustica and Lemon Semifreddo, a semi-frozen dessert. Many of the featured recipes are from Curtiss’ restaurant, but also include “seasonal recipes, recipes we do as specials and some new recipes that we never did at the restaurant because of time and space constraints,” Curtiss said.

“The vast majority of the recipes we served in the restaurant at one time or another.” The cookbook ($19.95) was designed and laid out by Curtiss himself and he had plenty of help from family and friends with food preparation, testing recipes, food photography and proofreading. Curtiss estimated that he logged about 2,000 hours and spent nearly $20,000 as part of the cookbook project. Now his valued customers and Italian foodies “can go cook themselves into a frenzy,” said Curtiss, who opened Frankies in 1993.
Frankie’s Pizza and Pasta, voted the best pizza in town by Redmond Reporter readers earlier this summer, is considered one of the best pizza joints in the area, so Curtiss knew a cookbook would be well received. He said he started doing a cookbook three or four times in past, but got sidetracked. Finally, he committed himself to completing the project, taking one day out of his work week for the past year and dedicating it to working on the cookbook. And finally, the cookbook is complete — while his nearly 20-year-old business continues
to thrive. Not bad for a former McDonald’s supervisor who doesn’t have any formal culinary training except for a week of continuing education classes at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa, Calif. But don’t be fooled — he’s not a spring chicken in the kitchen. He has honed his cooking skills on his own for the last 20-some years, becoming “a student of food and Italian cooking in particular,” he said. He has learned about Italian food and culture first hand, taking many trips to Italy, which he calls “the best place in the universe.” Curtiss worked 23 years for McDonald’s, working his way up to supervisor and training consultant. But in the back of his mind, he always wanted to open his own restaurant — a place “I would like to eat at,” Curtiss said. “I was very entrepreneurial,” Curtiss said. “I had a million ideas. I was tired of going to Godfather’s and chain restaurants.” So he and his wife took a chance and opened Frankie’s in 1993 and the restaurant has thrived ever since — mainly because of Curtiss’ dedication and passion for food, which is well documented in his new cookbook. “I tested all the recipes myself as I went along,” he said. “Sometimes I would make three or four variations before I finalized it.” Now residents can see all the final products from Frankie’s kitchen in one colorful cookbook.

Unlawful access: A woman who lives in the 9200 block of Red-Wood Road reported at around 1 p.m. that her vehicle was taken without permission by a cousin.
Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures this week on Northeast Novelty Hill Road, along with a complete closure of a section of the road over the next two weekends. Workers will be clearing, grading, and placing erosion control blankets on the hillside along Northeast Novelty Hill Road as part of King County’s Northeast Novelty Hill Road project. Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. through today. In addition, as part of the project, crews will be working along Northeast Union Hill Road near the Evans Creek Bridge, along with 195th and 196th Avenues Northeast, but no lane closures are expected on these roads. Drivers should plan to take a different route this weekend and next as Northeast Novelty Hill road will be closed between the 19500 and 19800 blocks from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, and from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19.

As community outreach facilitator for the Redmond Police Department (RPD), Jim Bove can be considered the face of the department. From providing comments for the media to organizing community events such as last month’s National Night Out Against Crime, the Virginia native is usually the person to contact for all things police and fire related. Bove works with more than 170 neighborhood, school, faith and community groups and organizations around town, teaching people about public safety and crime prevention. “Education is power,� he said.
A COMMUNITY EFFORT Bove said a lot of his job is encouraging community involvement in policing: providing the community with as much information to stay safe and also making people comfortable enough to call the police when necessary. OUTSIDE OF POLICE WORK Although Bove, whose father is a retired police officer, will have been with Redmond Police for four years come November, his background in public safety has been limited. With a bachelor’s degree in speech
and media studies from Radford University in Virginia and a master’s in college administration from Michigan State University, he is the first non-commissioned person to hold his current position with RPD. This means he does not have a badge and does not carry a gun. However, Bove said his background was a perfect match for the job and likes that he is able to focus on the education aspect of his job. “It’s just been a good fit,� he said. Before coming to Redmond, he spent 11 years working as a college administrator — a profession he fell into by accident. Bove said most of his work involved judicial affairs and student conduct, which included the local courts and some contact with the police.
From his work in a college environment, Bove met students with different backgrounds as well as students who have studied abroad. He said many could tell him about different parts of the world, but not many knew much about the United States. This prompted Bove, an avid traveler, to visit all 50 states during his off time from work. “I wanted to know my own country before I traveled abroad,� he said. And aside from Canada and the Caribbean, Bove has done exactly that — limiting his travel to within the country. He has five states left to visit: Alaska, Louisiana, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming.

This gives him and officers the opportunity to speak at schools and other community groups more because they’re not practicing reactive policing, going from call to call. “We can definitely afford to be more proactive,� Bove said.

ROUND TWO Becky Whitescarver, a first-grade teacher at St. Thomas, has been on McGraw’s 3-Day team since the beginning and will be walking alongside her friend again this year. Whitescarver is in her eighth year at St. Thomas and while she did not know McGraw when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, Whitescarver was there when McGraw was diagnosed the second time in December 2008, only a few months after their first
3-Day walk. “I remember that it was Nov. 1 that she was going in for a biopsy. We all were concerned but really could not believe it when she told us the news,� Whitescarver said. “I remember she came to my classroom door and just had the terrible look. It felt like one of my own sisters had been diagnosed.� McGraw had just passed her five-year mark of being cancer free when she received the news. She said it was hard and she was angry. But despite her upset,

McGraw decided to keep participating in the 3-Day walk because she said it was something she could control and manage. “You just feel empowered and strong from it,� she said.
SCHOOL SPIRIT McGraw said she first began participating in the walk when the wife of St. Thomas’ head of school, Kirk Wheeler, suggested it. Wheeler’s wife is also a breast cancer survivor and the couple have supported the 3-Day event each year. In addition to the staff at St. Thomas, Wheeler said the students do their part as well. “The entire school rallies behind the STS team each September,� he said. “Raising funds are part of the school’s service learning program. Through Amy (and) the team, the collective community and our students continue to learn about the importance of

MEDICAL ADVANCES During her second round with the cancer, McGraw said she went through chemotherapy and radiation again. She said in the five-year period between each diagnosis the advances in the treatments were very noticeable and credits this directly to the 3-Day event. “I honestly feel (the medical advances are) a result of the money they raise and the research they do,� she said. This time around, McGraw had treatment every three weeks. She said this helped because she didn’t miss as much school. “You’re trying to do the least amount of disruption for the kids,� she said. Wheeler said McGraw always makes her students her top priority. “Above all, she wanted to assure me that she would continue to put forth her best efforts and that her students came first,� he said. “Here she was worrying more about her students than her own health.� Whitescarver agreed, adding that McGraw never allowed the cancer to falter her spirit and passion for teaching. McGraw missed only a few days right after treatments and Whitescarver said she came back with energy to keep going and beat the cancer again. And since then, she has been beating it, one day at a time. “Every day I feel healthy,� McGraw said.

While Redmond has a strong performing arts scene with various theaters, music groups and spoken word organizations, Jessica Lambert feels there is still room for more visual arts around the city. So to see this happen, the Redmond resident founded VALA Eastside, which stands for Venues for Artists in the Local Area. The nonprofit began in September 2010 and focuses on showcasing local artists’ work in creative venues in Redmond and eventually throughout the Eastside. “We want to see the arts

and back-office services. Shunpike is one of the groups involved in the Storefronts Seattle program, part of which includes displaying local artists’ works in vacant storefronts. Lambert said she would like to see if something similar could be done in Redmond. In addition to bringing art into the community, VALA is also working to bring art into the classroom. Christine Cross, vice president of events and education for VALA, said this aspect of the nonprofit has not begun yet as they need funding, but she already has ideas about what she wants to do when it does begin. She said the money would fund venues to display students’ artwork so their parents can see it, adding that these venues would also have emerging artists’ works on
display as well. An artist with experience in journalism, Lambert said getting VALA up and running has been a “slow-going� process as she spreads the word about her organization throughout the local arts community. Lambert was also working out of her home, which did not make things easier. But this summer, she met Alyssa Magnotti, chief operations officer at thinkspace in downtown Redmond. According to its website, thinkspace is a company whose mission is to “build a strong community of entrepreneurs, tech startups, small businesses and nonprofits which share similar core values... (and to) passionately operate as a part of each company’s team; celebrating in their successes, contributing to their sustainable growth and creating an environ-
restaurant in Redmond. Both businesses will be featured at the company’s Wine Wednesday on Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., which will feature wines from O Wines in Woodinville. Magnotti said Wine Wednesday is a monthly event with wine and appetizers and an opportunity for people to learn about the featured businesses and winery. She said it is also a way to “meet like-minded individuals in the local community.� Lambert said four of the artists VALA has been working with will also be at the event: Donna Wallace, Stephanie Reilly, Gary Gibson and Mary Portteus. All four artists are from the greater Puget Sound area and Wallace and Reilly are from Redmond. “We’re really lucky to have them,� Lambert said.

and what it means to the community. She will also present an overview of the One Initiative Redmond, which relates to the development of the new Downtown Park project. The meeting will also recognize Jennifer Hawkins, a volunteer who has been preserving and cataloging

REDMOND SELECT GIRLS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS Redmond Select will soon be hosting tryouts for girls entering grades 5-8 to develop skills and play basketball in a competitive environment. Tryouts will be held on Monday, Sept. 12 in the Redmond High School gym, with fifth and sixth grades going from 6-7:30 p.m. and seventh and eighth grades from 7:30-9 p.m. Participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes early to register. LOCAL SOCCER, SOFTBALL LEAGUES FORMING SOON Champs Sports is currently registering for an upcoming adult open soccer league which will play at Grass Lawn Park on Saturday afternoons. For head coach Sally Goodspeed and the strong Overlake girls’ soccer program, the 2011 season represents one more chance at state glory. After coming off heartbreaking back-to-back losses in the 1A state finals to Seattle Academy (2-1 in 2009) and Bush (1-0 in 2010), the Owls have reloaded and are ready to start the long journey back to Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. Goodspeed, however, is never one to put the proverbial cart before the horse. “I preach one day, one game, one practice at a time,” she said. “You get to the state finals by doing all the little things every day and setting goals... if we can finish in the top of the league again and contend with (Seattle Academy) for the title which they seem to own every year, then we will put ourselves in a good position to have that shot. That’s all we can ask for.”
A LOADED LINEUP Although they lost an all-league talent in midfielder Emily Kelly to graduation as well as a couple more impact players, the Owls were fortunate to get two players back on the team that were part of the squad’s 2009 run. Tess Edenholm, who will anchor the midfield, and

TIM WATANABE, Redmond Reporter versatile Kendall Berg, who can play middle and back, didn’t play last year, but will be big contributors this year. “She’s a good defender and we’re finding a home for her,” said Goodspeed of Berg. “We return pretty much our entire defensive line, led by Kelsey D’Ewart, a junior, and Meredith Adams as well. (Adams) was dominant, a rookie of the year in the league. I expect good stuff from both of them again.” Up front, the Owls have a dan-
gerous striker in Adrianna Gildner, who achieved the rare feat of leading the team in both goals and assists last season. “She’s a year stronger and a year better,” noted the ninth-year coach. “I see her having another great year up front for us.” With one of the two senior captains’ slots taken by Berg, the other belongs to Kerri Smith, a phenomenal athlete who was named to the prestigious All-State first team for Girls’ Division II lacrosse.
“Kerri Smith is a great kid, great leader, works really hard and is really coming into her own as a soccer player,” lauded Goodspeed. “She’s a heck of a lacrosse player, and does a great job there, and it’s really carrying over into soccer which is nice to see.” And for the first time in Goodspeed’s tenure, the program has depth at the goalkeeper position. Mustang Open to raise money for Redmond High athletics The fifth-annual Mustang Open, which includes a golf tournament, dinner and auction to raise funds for Redmond High School (RHS) athletic programs, will be held at Bear Creek Country Club Monday, at noon.
Proceeds from the event will be used to directly provide gear, equipment, practice and competitive opportunities for the Mustang girls’ and boys’ golf teams, girls’ basketball, baseball, and the cheer squad. The golf tournament is a four-
person team scramble format, with entry fees set at $125 per person or $500 for a foursome, which includes green fees, golf cart, a buffet dinner and the silent auction that follows. Many sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals or busi-

taken for granted. “There’s no weak team or weak game in our schedule, ever,� Goodspeed admitted. “If we’re fortunate enough to make it to the playoffs, we will definitely be prepared, no question, and that’s a good thing. It’s an advantage for us, assuming we stay healthy and do well enough to earn one of the coveted playoff spots.� While Bush graduated nearly all of their talent from their 2010 statechampionship team, the Cardinals have reloaded, and the Eagles, Pumas and even Northwest School will provide a worthy challenge this year. Even with Goodspeed’s “one day at a time� mantra, the kids are undoubtedly looking forward to getting another chance at redemption, especially for the team’s few seniors who look to prove that the third time is indeed the charm. “We’re already working really hard, but I don’t think any of us are willing to get second again,� Smith said. “We’re just going to step it up that much more.�

Just when you thought you could take a break from financial drama, following the resolution of the debt ceiling issue, here comes Act 2: the downgrade of the U.S. long-term credit rating. As a citizen, you may be feeling frustrated. And as an investor, you might be getting worried. But is this concern really justified? Certainly, it was news when Standard and Poors (S&P) lowered the U.S. long-term credit rating from AAA to AA+. This was, after all, the first time that the U.S. has lost its AAA status since its initial publication 70 years ago. Furthermore, S&P put a negative outlook on the rating, which means that further downgrades are possible. But despite these developments, there’s no reason to think that the sky is falling in on the investment world. Consider the following: “Downgrade� doesn’t mean default. Rating agencies such as S&P assign ratings to bonds to help investors measure credit risk — the chance that they won’t receive timely payments. The downgrade to AA+ just means that investors would be slightly less likely to receive future payments than if the bond had an AAA rating. This is far different from a default, which would result in investors not receiving current payments. U.S. credit rating is still high quality. S&P didn’t change the U.S. government’s short-term credit rating, which applies to debt maturing in less than one year. Furthermore, even the long-term rating of AA+ is still considered high quality. Also, keep in mind that two other major rating agencies, Moody’s and Fitch, both af-

After more than a year of planning and a couple days of temptation, students at Albert Einstein Elementary School in Redmond now have one more reason to look forward to recess. On Thursday, the school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its new playground equipment. The 40-foot-by-40-foot structure — which includes monkey bars to cross, bars to slide down, plenty of areas to climb on and a “triple shoot” tri-level basketball hoop — was installed by Northwest Playground Equipment, Inc. right before school began on Tuesday, but had been fenced off until the ceremony. While this was to deter students from

playing on it, the fence only got them more eager as many would spend recess at the fence, looking through, “googly eyed” in excitement, said principal Melissa Pointer. “The anticipation has been building,” she said. Pointer added that during daily classroom visits in the last few days, students have been asking her, “When do we get to go on the new playground?” Bringing the new $27,000 structure to Einstein was a joint fundraising effort among the students and PTSA as well as a grant from the Melody S. Robidoux Foundation, an organization that assists in bringing playgrounds into schools and neighborhoods. “It was an amazing effort on our

PTSA treasurer Kari Haegele said planning for the new equipment began at the end of the 2010 school year. The student council planned a walk-a-thon fundraiser, which took place at the end of the 2011 school year. Einstein’s PTSA matched the funds they raised. “It’s so fulfilling to see a project come to fruition,” Haegele said. “It was so long in the planning stage. The entire school should be proud of the effort put forth by the students.”
