hink of four women right now. They could be coworkers, friends, acquaintances, neighbors or loved ones; wives, mothers, partners, daughters or sisters. Now, still thinking of those women, know this: One of them will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. It was this staggering fact that helped inspire an annual Eastside event four years ago: Cycle the Wave (Women Against Violence Everywhere). This noncompetitive bicycle ride for women Sunday puts 100 percent of proceeds toward helping victims of domes-
tic violence. “So often, women put their families or careers first, but this is something they can do for themselves,� said Sharon Anderson, executive director of the event and an avid cyclist. Last year, Cycle the Wave brought in more than 800 riders, 100 volunteers and $80,000. This year, more than 1,000 women have registered. Anderson and her fellow organizers, the Lakemont Ladies Cycling Club and Rising Star Guild, aimed to create a program that would help women be more fit, while benefiting a great cause at the same time. For millions of Americans waking up on Sept. 11, 2001, it was supposed to be just another Tuesday. They went about their routines and got ready for the day. Slowly news started trickling out that something had gone wrong, that the country had been attacked. “Is this a joke?� Issaquah resident Natalie Leach, then living in Plano, Texas, wondered after hearing of the attacks during a comedic morning radio show. Ten years later, that day remains entrenched in the collective mind of the country. Memorials across the nation, including a gathering outside Issaquah City Hall, served as a reminder of shared loss – and appreciation for those who fought to save the victims. Natalie and her husband, Tom, were among a crowd of approximately 100 people, including a number of military veterans and members of Eastside Fire and Rescue, in attendance for the tribute. Sunday’s memorial featured a speech by the mayor, and a first-hand account of the chaos at Ground Zero from Bill Lokey, who was with the Federal Emergency Management Agency at the time. Lokey was on site of the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal building as well, but there could be no comparison to the destruction in New York and Washington D.C., that led to the deaths of 2,977 people. “One of the things that struck a lot of us was, as a difference from Oklahoma City, where in the rubble there were desks and SEE 9-11, 12

ONE MORE VOTE Olympia still doesn’t get it Four times the voters have approved initiatives requiring a twothirds vote to raise taxes and a majority vote to increase fees. Four times. Yet despite 1053’s 64 percent “yes” vote last year, Olympia repeatedly violated it. Initiative 1125 closes loopholes they put in 1053. I-1125 requires, again, that fee increases be decided by elected representatives of the people, not unelected bureaucrats at state agencies. 1125 ensures accountability and transparency. Voters overwhelmingly rejected a state income tax last year. How did Olympia respond? They started pushing “anything goes” tolls which would be even worse. Our state imposes one of the highest gas taxes in the nation, collecting billions every year. I-1125 stops transportation revenue from being diverted to non-transportation purposes. Tim Eyman In these tough times, the idea of government taking thousands of dollars per year out of family budgets is really scary. People are hurting, and yet Olympia is nonetheless sneaking forward with “anything goes” tolls that are just taxes by another name. If there’s going to be tolls, there needs to be accountability and transparency. Without it, tolls will never be accepted by the citizenry. A toll, by definition, is a specific charge used to pay for a specific project. Current law requires tolls to be project-specific – I-1125 reaffirms that basic protection. Last year’s I-1053 required tolls to be set by the elected representatives of the people. Even in these tough times, citizens might be willing to accept that. But auto-pilot tolls imposed by a bunch of unelected bureaucrats at state agencies? Not a chance. Taxpayers will never accept giving unelected bureaucrats a blank check, granting them unlimited power to impose burdensome tolls without any accountability to the people. In the entire history of our state, tolls have always expired after the project is paid for. But Olympia recently repealed that protection. So without I-1125, tolls will continue forever. I-1125 reinstates the longstanding guarantee that once a project is paid for, the toll will go away. It’s certainly not a surprise that unelected bureaucrats don’t like I-1125 because it takes away their power to tax and toll. The opponents of I-1125 are the same forces that pushed last year’s state income tax and opposed last year’s tougher-to-raise-taxes I-1053. It makes sense. I-1125 simply reinforces the voters’ mandate last November: that taking more of the people’s money has to be an absolute last resort. I-1125 reinstates I-1053’s voter approved protections, closes loopholes and reinforces existing statutory and constitutional protections. Let me say that again: I-1125 simply reaffirms laws and the state Constitution’s 18th Amendment which have been protecting taxpayers for decades. Citizens have to follow the law and abide by the Constitution – the government should too. Politicians’ plans need to comply with the Constitution and voter-approved laws – that’s what I-1125 requires them to do. In these tough times, it’s more important than ever to approve Initiative I-1125. Richardson will make good decisions for the city The citizens of Sammamish have the opportunity to improve City Council decision making by electing Kathy Richardson. I have worked with Kathy for the past 2-1/2 years as volunteers for the Sammamish Homeowners (SHO) group. SHO sought
to bring balance to the Shoreline Master Program being updated by the city. Kathy came to the weekly meetings prepared to discuss the issues. She would take notes during the meeting and collect the ideas under discussion. Near the end of the two- to three-hour sessions, Kathy would recap what had been discussed to facilitate consensus among the group. She paid attention to the details of the issues to ensure that everyone understood the decisions made during the session. Kathy’s questions were always pertinent to the discussion. Further, her questions were phrased politely to seek answers rather than trying to win a position by questioning the opinion of another in the group. The Sammamish City Council needs to reach good decisions more efficiently. Kathy Richardson will help make this happen.

Keep funding for Conservation Reserve Program
Thank you for covering Sen. Patty Murray’s appointment to the deficit-reduction Super Committee. The need for responsible action is clearer now more than ever. With the right leadership, I hope we’ll be able to renew economic growth and reduce our nation’s budget deficit. Budget cuts must be made to restore the economy, but it’s equally important that conservation programs providing benefits to both our nation and economy, like the Conservation Reserve Program, are properly funded. Conservation programs provide cost-effective ways to conserve wildlife habitat, prevent erosion, keep drinking water clean and promote outdoor recreation. In Washington alone, there are 754,000 sportsmen using these resources, who have a $1.4 billion annual impact on our state’s economy and support more than 19,800 jobs. Conservation programs are community investments that benefit everyone. Potential cuts to conservation not only threaten America’s outdoor legacy, but could hurt countless local economies and small businesses that depend on the outdoor sporting community. Cutting these programs would be a cavalier dismissal of the economic and environmental benefits that they provide. I encourage Senator Murray to take a fair, balanced approach in the upcoming budget cuts and remember that our precious outdoor resources won’t last forever.

And the growing number of participants has added tremendously to the conversation about domestic violence – an issue that’s often overlooked as a problem on the Eastside. “A common misconception is that it’s not a problem here,” said Kelly Becker, Eastside Domestic Violence Program development director and collaborator with Cycle the Wave. In 2010, EDVP answered 10,069 crisisline calls and worked with 4,700 local domestic violence victims. This year, EDVP has had a rise in urgent requests for services such as shelter and basic necessities. Many of the program’s clients are victims of assault and felony cases.

The ride is special for many reasons, Armen-Bolen said. The routes, which goes through Issaquah, Bellevue, Maple Valley, Renton and Newcastle with rest stops along the way, provide a scenic backdrop. Husbands, families and cheerleaders from local high schools, cheer on the cyclists. At the finish, riders are pampered with treats like salon and reflexology services. “There’s a lot to keep the inspiration going, from giving flowers to every rider, to firefighters handing out Hot Tamales, we try to create this atmosphere of girl power,” said Nancy Belur, strategic planning director. New to Cycle the Wave this year is a 12-Mile “Little Sister” route for younger cyclists. Additionally, riders can choose between the 25-mile “Girly Girl” ride through the rolling hills of Bellevue’s quiet neighborhoods, the 42-mile “Middle Sister” offering a few more scenic miles, and the 62-mile “Burly Girl” route. New artwork at Pogacha restaurants pops out of its frames to greet viewers
Elaborate two-dimensional collages and three-dimensional assemblages filled with color and found objects are on exhibit Pogacha of Issaquah as part of a two-person show titled “Collage & Assemblage: textures, shapes & edges.� The show features handmade wooden boxes filled with found objects created by Poulsbo artist A.K. Anderson and cut and crafted two-dimensional paper collages by by Port Townsend artist Harold Nelson. The show will run through Oct. 15 at Pogacha of Issaquah, 120 NW Gilman Blvd. “The assemblage boxes I have been creating since 1996 are inspired by my attraction to found objects and enjoyment in the contrast of mixed textures,� said Anderson, who explains that assemblage began as an experimental medium for Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Jean Dubuffet and became an acknowledged medium by the 1950s with modern artists George Braque, Kurt Schwitters, Man Ray, Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Cornell.
Her works include themes built around rough wooden hearts, vintage toys and seascapes, among others. “I have discovered that the very choice of the objects assembled often trigger a distant memory, the way a song can define a specific time in your life,� noted Anderson. While Anderson’s work jumps out of its boxes and begs to be touched, Nelson’s work beckons the viewer from close up and far away. His brightly colored collages are made from multiple layers of magazine cutouts, designed to look good from near and far. “The whole goal is to have things that work at both distances,� said Nelson, who worked at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., before retiring to Port Townsend to pursue his artwork. “In my studio I step back 20 feet away from it when I’m working on it because I want it to look cool at a distance too.� Nelson has been interested in artwork all his life and dabbled in photography. While living in Washington, D.C., he spent lots of time “haunting� the art museums and ab-

sorbing the various art styles. About 10 years ago he met Maryland collage artist George Sakkal, who taught him the layering technique. “Some places you’ll have 10 layers of paper and you’ll paste over things,� said Nelson. “It’s like a painter trying to find the right mix, right texture. I’m visually curious about what things are going to look like.�

Eastlake quarterback Keegan Kemp rushed for two touchdowns and threw for three more Friday night as the Wolves cruised to a 42-14 victory over Snohomish. After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, Eastlake opened the floodgates via running back Ryan Lewis’ 40-yard score. Kemp then hit Aaron DiGenova for an 8-yard TD and Brian Quick for a 60-yard score. He found Quick later for a 27-yard TD and rushed in scores of 4 and 14 yards. The senior quarterback completed 19 of 24 passes for 274 yards and three TDs and one interception. He rushed 10 times for 83 yards. Lewis had 10 carries for 84 yards. The Wolves improved to 2-0 overall with the victory. They face Roosevelt at 7 p.m., tonight on the road.

Following a prayer by Eastside Fire and Rescue Chaplin Mike Ryan, speeches by Lokey and Issaquah Mayor Ava Frisinger, members of the Issaquah High School Junior Naval ROTC - including the Leachs’ son - presented a 21-gun salute to fallen firefighters and police officers. Frisinger urged the audience to recall and recognize everything first responders did on that day to save as many people as possible. She asked the crowd to remember how much they leaned on each other to deal with such an inescapable tragedy. Locally, she praised the community’s response, pulling together soon after the attacks. Only hours later, churches opened
to give residents a forum to express their sorrow and frustration.. “Emotions were running high that day, and those services gave people a place to start turning their fear and anger into hope and appreciation for each other,� she said. History was changed forever on Sept. 11, both at home and abroad. With wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many families saw fathers, sons, mothers going to battle. Steve Johnson was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His son has served in Iraq. For Johnson, a member of the Issaquah Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sunday memorial capped off an emotional weekend of remembrance. The reminders were everywhere; and he recalls the surprise he felt because of the nature of the attacks. “I went from an amazement, to anger, to a feeling of futility,� he said. “None of us had ever seen an airplane used like that.� Nat Levy can be reached at 425-453-4290.

Police were dispatched to the Issaquah Transit Center on Aug. 31, responding to an argument on a bus between two males where a knife was potentially displayed. Upon arrival the officer was told by the alleged knife wielder that he did get into an argument with a “fat guy� on the bus, but he didn’t display a knife. The officer found a folding pocket knife in his front left pocket. Both men denied any weapons were displayed during the confrontation. They

Deflated – A Liberty High School student reported someone let the air out of two of his tires during the Sept. 9 Issaquah-Liberty football game – a contest won 23-13 by Issaquah. The tires were reinflated and the driver and his passengers departed without incident. Bobcat on the loose? – A citizen walking on the trail behind Issaquah High School on Sept. 11 reported seeing a bobcat in a tree. They did not know the exact location of the cat, but were advised to leave it alone and leave the area slowly. Wildlife agents were notified about the possible sighting. Smash ‘n grab- A Macbook laptop, estimated at $2,300 in value, was stolen from a Lexus SUV in the Fred Meyer parking lot Sept. 2. The owner said he was away from his vehicle for 50 minutes to eat. The driver’s side rear window also was shattered, bumping the total loss to $2,800.
Mysterious bottle - On the morning of Sept. 6, someone reported a suspicious plastic water bottle filled with a liquid in a parking stall off of Newport Way. The caller reported they heard an explosion the previous night and thought from watching the news the bottle might be hazardous. Officers counseled the caller on various bottled explosions, which put them at ease.
