FREELAND — Americans’ freeflowing hugs startled musicians Jacob Mafuleni, Peacheson Ngoshi, Tonderai Ndava and Martha Thom when they arrived in the United States from Zimbabwe, but they were eager to open their arms Thursday evening. The members of the marimba band Mbira dzeMuninga bid farewell to Whidbey Island on Thursday evening after an almost four-month stay in the United States, where they’ve been touring throughout Washington, Oregon, California and Colorado. “We can travel around but we know that we have to go back home, meaning this place,” Mafuleni said one recent evening at the Rubatano paChitsuwa Marimba Center in
Langley. The return to Zimbabwe is a bittersweet goodbye to a place and people that have come to form a home away from home for the musicians. “I am very excited to go home, to see my children,” said Thom, who is married to Mafuleni. “But also I am very sad. We have so many wonderful friends here.” This was Thom’s first trip to the United States, but Mafuleni, Ngoshi and Ndava have already spent two summers here with Whidbey Island as their base. “This was our first place to come, Whidbey Island. The wife of the Langley man who was murdered on the day after Christmas 2003 has been a suspect in the killing for more than six years. Two people have already been charged with firstdegree murder in the death of Russel Douglas: Peggy Sue Thomas, a friend and former co-worker of the victim’s wife; and James “Jim” Huden, a former boyfriend of Thomas who police have identified as the triggerman in the slaying. Island County authorities have not publicly named Brenna Douglas, the wife of the murdered man, as a suspect. According to documents obtained by the Record, however, which include a statement signed by Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks made during a civil lawsuit, detectives and the prosecutor’s office have identified Brenna Douglas as a suspect in the murder. Public records also allege that Douglas became a suspect because of the life insurance policies that covered her husband, her connection to Thomas, and that Douglas “did not exhibit great emotion when she was told by law enforcement of her husband’s death.” Russel Douglas had three life insurance policies when he died. His wife collected on one policy, but had to file lawsuits against two other insurance companies when the insurers delayed payment of the proceeds from the policies. Attempts to reach Brenna Douglas for comment through the attorneys who have represented her in the insurance lawsuits were unsuccessful.
In court records, Douglas has vigorously denied any involvement in her husRussel Douglas band’s death. Island County detectives claim Russel Douglas was lured to a remote property on Wahl Road by Thomas, who claimed she had a Christmas present for Douglas’ wife, where he was shot in the head by Huden. Documents indicate that the homicide investigation determined Douglas was last seen on the morning of Dec. 26, 2003 when he left the home where Brenna Douglas was living. Though the couple had split — they married in June 1994, but had separated, with Russel Douglas moving to Renton while Brenna Douglas stayed on Whidbey Island with their two children — Russel Douglas spent Christmas with his estranged wife. He was found dead Dec. 27, 2003, though investigators later estimated he had been shot about 1 p.m. the day before.
Police name wife Detectives concluded their homicide report nearly a year after the murder, and sent the referral to the prosecutor’s office on Dec. 21, 2004. COUPEVILLE — Ten employees at Whidbey General Hospital are being outsourced this fall in a move that’s estimated to save $1.5 million over five years. The hospital’s transcriptionists were surprised when they thought they were attending their monthly department meeting Aug. 30 and instead were greeted by a team of top hospital officials. They were told that a national medical transcription company, Webmedx, was taking over transcription for the hospital. Trish Rose, hospital spokesperson, explained that all the employees were given unconditional job offers to continue working as transcriptionists for the company, as well as 60 days to continue in their current jobs. Rose said that technology
has brought big changes to the medical transcription field and that the vast majority of hospitals now outsource the service. Skagit and Providence hospitals made the move over a year ago, she said. “It was a very hard decision to make, and we went to great lengths to ensure that we contracted with a quality organization that is considered the best in their field,� Rose said, adding that hospital officials insisted on going with a company that only uses transcriptionists within the United States. Rose described Wedmedx as “the premier national provider of medical documentation solutions and services with all operations based in the United States.� They will provide 24-hour coverage for medical documentation services to the hospital. Longtime community activist passes away Live, Laugh and Lacquer BY RECORD STAFF
Whidbey Island resident and longtime community activist Malcolm Ferrier died at his Langley home on Tuesday, Sept. 6. He was 80. Ferrier was well-known on South Whidbey for his involvement with and founding of the Unitarian church, as well as his work on land-use and environmental issues and his volunteer efforts at local schools. He volunteered with Common Cause, Hemlock Society and as a golf instructor for South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District. Ferrier was born in India in 1930 to Scottish parents before attending board-
ing school in his parents’ homeland at the age of 6. During World War II, Ferrier was evacuated to Toronto, Canada. Upon returning to Scotland, he attended Dollar Academy and then the University of St. Andrews,

Port of South Whidbey officials will review a draft lease with AT&T for a cell phone tower on port property at Possession Beach Waterfront Park at the port board meeting Tuesday, Sept. 13. Also at next week’s meeting, port commissioners will talk about applications for grant funds. Chamber hires new director Marc Esterly has been named the new executive director of the Langley Chamber of Commerce. Esterly replaces outgoing director Sherry Jennings, who will serve as a communications consultant, according to chamber officials. Esterly will handle the administrative responsibilities of the chamber and manage operations of the visitor information center, while Jennings will oversee communications for the
chamber and the organization’s key events. The chamber announced the changeover in a letter to its members Friday.

We are Mother Mentors, and we connect new mothers to mentors whose background and disposition can help through this challenging time of life. Our service is connecting; and this letter really has two parts, one for each member of the partnership: For the mother: are you parenting young children and desire to connect with a new friend? Someone who listens, encourages and inspires you and reliably is there to lend a hand when you need it to cope with family stress, a situation often precipitated by bringing home a new baby. Or are you doing fine; and still long for a woman who has experience in the process and can share her wisdom and conversation? Though hugely rewarding, you are involved in one of life’s most challenging and demanding experiences. Parenting young children or welcoming a new baby can be one of the hardest tasks you have ever taken on. Lack of sleep, the demands of dealing with toddlers and not enough adult conversation can sap your energy. Let us pair you with that special person who has been there and can share her experience and wisdom with you. Once or twice a week for a few hours she will come to your home and share the load, hold the baby, play with the toddler(s) and do what you need to restore your sense of perspective. For the mentor: If you would like to be a Mother Mentor, part of that special team that helps new parents cope with the stresses and challenges of welcoming a new (or another) child into the family, we can open that opportunity for you. We all wonder, in the face of national, state, and community dysfunction, what we can do as an individual to make a better world. We have an answer for you, one that makes a difference in someone’s life and fills that “grandparent void� you may be experiencing if you are far from family! to come, Douglas would find herself in court battles with two insurance companies — AIG Life Insurance Co. and Farmers New World Life Insurance Co. — fighting for proceeds from her late husband’s life insurance.
Contested claim AIG received a claim from Brenna Douglas on Jan. 27, 2004. Attorneys for AIG at first refused to pay the $200,000 Douglas was due from the group life insurance policy that Russel Douglas had gotten from his employer, Tetra Tech, where he had reviewed permits for cell phone towers. Initially, AIG discovered that Tetra Tech had never
deducted the premiums for the policy from Douglas’ paychecks. After the insurer gave Tetra Tech the chance to pay the past-due premiums, lawyers then discovered Brenna Douglas may have been involved in her husband’s death. AIG lawyers cited a law called the “Slayer’s Statute,� which prohibits life insurance proceeds from going to a beneficiary who may have been involved in the murder of the deceased. Though AIG offered to put the $200,000 in a trust account for Douglas’ two children, Brenna Douglas refused and said the money should be paid to her instead. Jessie Valentine, the attorney for Brenna Douglas in the lawsuit, said her client was not a suspect. As proof, she presented a memo from the prosecuting attorney’s office that was

dated July 22, 2004. In the memo, sent to Mark Plumberg, the lead detective in the investigation, Banks noted that Plumberg may be contacted by one or more insurance companies where Russel Douglas had a policy. Banks gave Plumberg the answer he was to give: “At this time, Brenna Douglas is no longer the focus of our investigation. The investigation is now focused on identifying suspects other than Brenna Douglas. She is no more a suspect than anyone else.� In a letter to an AIG claims adjuster, Valentine again demanded that the company pay Douglas. “As you can see, my client is not the focus of the investigation and is no more a suspect in the case than any other citizen ... There is virtually no evidence to support a theory that Ms. Douglas is in any way involved in the murder of her husband,� Valentine wrote. Valentine said Douglas was at home with her children on Dec. 26, 2003 and went off the island to go
shopping Dec. 27. Valentine and Douglas also complained about how the Island County Sheriff’s Office had treated the victim’s wife during the department’s investigation. In court filings, they repeatedly complained about an investigator on the case who later left the department under a cloud. Valentine said she was hired because Brenna Douglas was having difficulties “dealing with insurance companies and the sheriff’s department in the midst of grieving the death of her husband.� She countered the claim made by opposing attorneys that Brenna Douglas had not cooperated with the murder investigation. “She has done everything possible to assist in the investigation,� Valentine said. “Prior to retaining me several months after the death of her husband, Ms. Douglas made herself available at all times to the sheriff’s department to answer questions and assist in any way possible,� Valentine said. Valentine and Douglas criticized the work of

Detective Mike Birchfield, saying that he had asked for an interview with Douglas but never responded to phone calls. Valentine also noted his subsequent arrest for domestic violence. (Birchfield was put on paid administrative leave from the Island County Sheriff’s Office after he was arrested in June 2004 in Oak Harbor and charged with fourth-degree assault after a domestic violence incident involving his wife. He later resigned, but went to work for the Langley Police Department in 2006. He died the following June of pneumonia at the age of 48.) In court papers, Douglas said she was “mistreated� by the sheriff’s office. She said Birchfield had sent an email to “my deceased husband’s mother telling her that I was refusing to cooperate in the investigation.� “It was this sort of behavior that resulted in my hiring an attorney,� she added. Douglas also complained that the detective would call her at random to talk about the case, and arrange to stop by to discuss the murder but never show up. Her dealings with the sheriff’s office left her “emotionally devastated,� she said. “On top of that, I did not know what insurance policies my husband had and I was too emotionally distraught to find out what to do about the insurance,� Douglas added. Valentine noted that

They never indicated that they wanted another interview, and the times that Mr. Banks discussed the case with me, he repeatedly told me my client was not a suspect,� Valentine said.
Prosecutor responds Banks submitted a declaration in the AIG lawsuit in October 2005. The evidence in the investigation was enough to convict Huden, the alleged gunman in the crime, Banks said in his statement. “After thorough review and analysis of the reports, I concluded that there is sufficient evidence to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that James Huden murdered Russel Douglas. “In my opinion, there is a strong possibility that James Huden did not act alone in this crime,� Banks added. “Peggy Thomas and Brenna Douglas remain suspects as accomplices. However, there is not, in my opinion, sufficient admissible evidence at this time to prosecute either Brenna Douglas or Peggy Thomas for the murder of Russel Douglas.� “Brenna Douglas and Peggy Thomas remain suspects in the homicide of Russel Douglas. them. Rather, I have held their cases, pending receipt of additional evidence that may implicate or exonerate them,� Banks concluded. Joan McPherson, an attorney appointed to represent the interest of the Douglas’ two children in the AIG lawsuit, also told the court that Banks had informed her that Brenna Douglas may have been involved in her husband’s murder. McPherson asked that the insurance proceeds be placed into a trust for the children. The attorney noted that police reports in the case also said William Hill, a friend of Huden, had implicated Brenna Douglas in the murder of her husband. Hill was the tipster who broke the case open for police. In July 2004, Hill, an Air Force retiree and a resident of Punta Gorda, Fla., called investigators in Island County to say Huden, his friend, had confessed to shooting a man in the head while visiting Whidbey

Island during the 2003 Christmas holiday. Hill shared many details of the crime that Huden had allegedly given him: the type of handgun; the involvement of Thomas, who was having an affair with Huden; and that Thomas had worked at a hair salon owned by Brenna Douglas.
Wife not involved Douglas, and her attorney, strongly disputed Banks’ statement that she was a suspect. While Douglas acknowledged she had spent the proceeds from one insurance policy on a new house and car, she said the AIG proceeds should be paid to her, and not her children. “The insurance proceeds are rightfully mine and while I intend to invest the money and it will ultimately go to benefit my children, it is inappropriate to hold the money or award it to my children on the unsupported allegation of the prosecutor, which differs from what he said previously,� Douglas said in court papers. “Again, I categorically
state that I was not involved in the death of my husband in any way,� she said. McPherson, the attorney representing the Douglas children, said she also interviewed Douglas, but came to her own opinion. “This interview brought fourth no reason to believe Brenna Douglas was involved in the death of her husband. She appears to be a loving mother to her minor children and visibly upset by the death of her husband,� McPherson wrote. Even so, McPherson said the money should not be given to Douglas. “It is in the best interests of the children to withhold the insurance proceeds from the mother until the mother is clearly no longer considered a suspect in this case,� she said. “Island County Prosecuting Attorney Gregory Banks believes Brenna Douglas is a viable suspect in the murder of her husband. If Brenna Douglas is found to have participated in Russel Douglas’ murder, the funds would rightfully go to the minor children ... The court should be cautious,

as once the funds are spent they are irretrievable.� Banks would not release the records of the investigation as part of the civil lawsuit. And without clear proof that Brenna Douglas was involved, Island County Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill ordered the insurance proceeds released to her, plus $1,200 in interest, in December 2005. Douglas also filed suit against Farmers New World Life Insurance, on Dec. 26, 2006; the three-year anniversary of her husband’s death. Brenna Douglas set up the appointment to talk about a life insurance policy for her-
self and her husband with Farmers New World Life Insurance in October 2002. Both received policies, with Russel Douglas getting a $300,000 life insurance policy. Court documents also show Brenna Douglas later visited with her Farmers agent to get her coverage amount lowered. In the lawsuit, Douglas said the company was refusing to honor the policy, and by adjusting the claim made by Douglas, had “engaged in extreme and/or outrageous conduct� that had caused “severe emotional distress� to Brenna Douglas. Attorneys for the insur-
ance company, however, said Russel Douglas gave false answers on questions about his health when he applied for the policy, and did not tell Farmers that he had been treated for depression and a heart murmur. If the company had known his true medical history, Farmers’ lawyers said, he would not have been given a policy. Friends of Cliff Hagglund want to see him back in the saddle again soon. Hagglund, 48, suffered a massive heart attack Saturday, Sept. 3 and was rushed to the intensive care unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. He was released to the care of his family in Clinton on Wednesday. At 10 a.m. today through 3 p.m. Sunday, the Western Games Association will hold a fundraising auction for Hagglund at the Island County Fairgrounds in Langley, behind the horse arena in the HOPE building during the regular Western Games event. The avid horseman has no medical insurance and the goal is to raise money to help soften the blow of Hagglund’s medical bills. Fellow gamer Heather Kline has known Hagglund since she was a teenager and has met him in the horse arena numerous times. “Cliff will help out whenever help is needed and will go beyond the call of duty for our club or even a friend,� Kline said. “He is passionate about horses and has been breeding quarter horses and paints before I ever met him,� she said. Kline said that Hagglund, who lives in Clinton, comes from a longtime Whidbey Island family and is wellknown for his knowledge of horses. But he is also known for his sense of humor and love of people. “This man loves life and

tries to get along with everyone,� Kline said. “If I’m having a bad day he will try his hardest to make me laugh and cheer me up. He always has something smart to say,� she added. Marta Berry is another of Hagglund’s longtime friends and praised his never-ending help in and out of the horse arena. “He is the kind of person that will help you out whenever and whatever you want to do,� Berry said. “He will take your animals and feed them, rescue animals, do whatever he can to save an animal in need. He has a very giving heart.� Joni Hanson, Hagglund’s employer at Joni’s Hair Design in Bayview, agrees with Kline’s assessment of his lust for life. “Oh my goodness gracious he’s a character,� Hanson said. “It’s real quiet around here without him.� Hagglund has been a hairdresser on the island for more than 30 years and has a large clientele at Joni’s, where he has been cutting hair for about four years. “He’s always got everyone laughing; he’s talking all the time, telling stories. He’s just full of life,� Hanson said. Hanson said everyone at the hair salon was shocked and saddened by the news of Hagglund’s heart attack. She said the doctor advised him to not work for at least one month. Meanwhile, the folks at the Western Games Association are scrambling to collect items for the auction. Any slightly used or

so much since he has been hospitalized. I just can’t wait to hear the stories when he gets out,� she said. Hagglund’s daughter, Jenna Berry, helped to get her father home from the hospital Wednesday and was encouraged by his spirits. “He’s doing good and his memory is fine and everything,� Berry said. “He’s on a defibrillator which is helping to keep his heart pumping and sustain him right now.�
Berry, the eldest of his three adult children, gave birth to Hagglund’s first grandchild just over a week ago and a visit from baby Callie Wednesday helped to make his day better. “He’s already picked out what horse she’s going to ride,� Berry said. There has been a general outpouring of love and support for the much admired Hagglund with lots of emails, phone calls and Facebook messages coming in. Berry said that when her dad arrived at the hospital, staff asked about Hagglund’s shaved head. Berry explained that he had shaved it in solidarity for a fundraiser of a friend who is going through chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer. “He’s a very funny kind of guy who would do anything for you. Obituaries Kelly Cochran Hamilton Kelly Hamilton died Aug. 19, 2011 while on a cruise to the Bahamas. She passed away living life to the end enjoying new adventures, food and ports of call. She was born Kelly Cochran Aug. 25, 1959 in Seattle and was a longtime resident of Whidbey Island. She is survived by her husband Jeff and daughters Olivia and Madison; brother Clay Cochran; nieces Amanda and Phalen and nephew Cole. GRANITE FALLS — South Whidbey won just enough rallies and surged from behind in the fourth game to defeat Granite Falls 3-1. The volleyball score looks lopsided in favor of the South Whidbey Falcons. The individual game tallies tell a different story — one of back-and-forth battles with late pushes: 26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 27-25. “I’m happy and I’m glad we pulled through,” said Falcons senior outside hitter Linden Firethorne. “I think everyone’s probably kind of nervous and we’re just learning where we’re supposed to be.” “Next game we’ll be more communicative,” she said. Despite losing, Granite Falls head coach Jenn Coulson was thrilled with her senior-laden team’s performance. “I couldn’t be happier with the way that they played,” said Coulson, in her firstyear as the Tigers’ head coach. “I didn’t expect it to be so close, back and forth, like it was. “It doesn’t feel like a loss. I’m so happy with the way they played I can’t complain at all.”

Contestants will shoot to break the most of six briquettes without hitting the tube. Third is the shotgun shoot at a turkey target, 25 yards away. Each shooter gets two tries, and whoever has the most pellets in the white center wins. A jug head shoot at 25 yards away gives pistoleers a chance to get the most of six possible rounds in the bottle per target without hitting the jug head. The final scheduled event is a rifle shoot at 50 yards at a bull’seye target using a five rounds from a .22 rimfire rifle. Non-members are encouraged to participate. All pistol and revolver shooting is offhand, using one or two hands. Four tickets cost $5, and individual tickets cost $1.50. CWSA officials said a ticket may be

The veteran Falcons continued their attack and took a 16-9 lead on Firethorne’s kill. The class is free and is open only to women. The lessons will include firearm safety, safe firearm storage, and the law and firearms. The class also includes firing range instruction. All instruction is provided by retired detectives from the Island County Sheriff’s Office. Participants should bring their own handgun, ammunition and eye and ear protection. CWSA will provide gear for students who don’t own equipment. The October session does not require pre-registration. Participants should bring a lunch, as it will last into the afternoon. The Tigers nearly swept the Falcons, save freshman Noah Frank’s lone win against Tigers senior Allen Maskell. Frank won the third singles match 6-4, 6-4. “Noah toughed it out in a very close match,� Kramer said. “He had a gutsy match; I’ve seen this before in Noah — the ability to pull off the close ones.� The Falcons’ junior cocaptain Guy Sparkman lost to Walker Olis 6-2, 6-2 in first singles. Thom recently joined the band and plays hosho — shakers made of hollowed gourds with seeds inside. Since this May, the group has been passing on their musical knowledge through workshops and camps between performances on a West Coast tour organized by Dana Moffett, owner of Rubatano and whom the band members affectionately refer to as “amai Muninga” — mother of the band. Moffett has been playing the traditional Zimbabwean music since she stumbled upon a marimba performance in Seattle in the mid’90s. About a decade later, on her first trip to Zimbabwe, Moffett saw members of Mbira dzeMuninga playing. “I just went to their show and I was just taken by the whole thing — all the music. It was amazing to be there,” Moffett said. On her second trip in 2006, Moffett met Ngoshi,
Mafuleni and Ndava at a music teaching camp. “The first time I heard them in Zimbabwe playing and the first time I ever saw their band playing I was just — I was truly moved to tears,” she said. “You can’t really explain why the music is cutting into you so deeply.” After feeling the connection between the mbira music and the deep-rooted Shona culture in Zimbabwe, Moffett wanted to recreate that transformative experience for others here, while supporting the band’s music. “A lot of people can’t go there,” she said. “It just seemed like a great value to have the culture brought here, and to learn directly from them.” Moffett and the musicians decided to organize a summer tour, and in 2008, six band members — including Ngoshi, Mafuleni and Ndava — and their manager came from Zimbabwe to the United States. At first they were nervous about traveling to a strange and distant land. “In Zimbabwe we are many black people — that’s the first thing, so many black people — and here, so many white people on Whidbey,”
Ndava said. “It was like ‘Oh, how am I going to fit in?’ But I’m happy we are together right now, enjoying the music.” There were quite a few differences between Whidbey Island and the musicians’ land-locked African country. “Here there is a lot of waters, and for my first time I was just like, oh, very scared of being [on] a ferry,” Ngoshi said. But he and the others adjusted to life surrounded by water. Ngoshi said he’s even been out sea kayaking. They’ve found themselves changed in other ways, as well. While all four of the musicians are now quick to embrace friends here, Americans’ generous hugging was a bit of a surprise when they first arrived. “The first day I was like, ‘Ahh, oh my God!’ I’m shy, you know,” Ndava said. “But I’m getting used to it here.” The food — and who prepares it — was another cultural difference. “When I came here, it was funny to me to see men cooking,” Mafuleni said, laughing. “Back home in our culture, women, they always cook.”

But Mafuleni and the other men went well beyond adapting to this cultural difference — they started cooking, too. Mufaleni even carried the custom back home to Zimbabwe. Though they have noticed many differences between here and home, they’ve also found many things both cultures share. “I think with people here they are the same with the Zimbabweans back home,” Mafuleni said. “I always meet good people here, good people. And, well, Zimbabwean people are like one.” Mafuleni described the way Zimbabweans often share even one cigarette between three people. “There is something I am seeing here that looks like [that], but in a different way — like helping each other. There is a lot of people who are helping us in different ways.” The biggest surprise for the Zimbabwean band members may have been seeing white Americans playing their traditional music — and playing it pretty well. “I did see white people playing our traditional music. That was a shock for me,” Ndava said. “There’s always where the music comes from — the motherland — so it was
they’re cultivating an understanding between civilizations. And in an increasingly globalized world dominated by Western influence, an American appreciation for Shona culture represents a refreshing exchange. “Coming here and seeing Americans doing their music, playing marimba, playing mbira, singing, dancing — it was amazing to them,” Moffett said. “It shows them their culture is spreading and people love their music. It’s a really good thing.” Leslie Yingling started playing marimba with Moffet in 1998, but her relationship with the music transformed when she met the members of Mbira dzeMuninga. “It’s one thing to learn the music,” she said. “I’m understanding more of the culture, knowing the people, where the music really came from.” Yingling’s son, Jacob, formed a strong bond with the musicians and has even been writing to Mafuleni and Thom’s children in Zimbabwe. Yingling hopes to take him there someday. “We bring them the spiritual music,” Ngoshi said. “If you play this music, each and every one around the music will very much bond with this music.”
a little different,” he said, pointing out that Americans have trouble with the Shona words in song. “But, oh, they are playing like, good.” To see white Americans playing mbiras was especially shocking because in Zimbabwe, where the indigenous Shona people have been playing mbira for thousands of years, some people look down upon the music. “Many people in Zimbabwe, they don’t like to play marimba. Some they don’t want to play mbira, so I was surprised to see white people play our traditional music,” Thom said, explaining that Christian influence has given traditional Shona music a demonic reputation among some. “It was very interesting to come here on Whidbey Island and see a lot of people playing marimba,” Mafuleni said. “It was good for us as well to come together with those people.” In 2009, Mbira dzeMuninga collaborated with local musicians on a CD called Sungano, a Shona word used to express deep unity. Indeed, the members of Mbira dzeMuninga and the American students are sharing much more than music. They’re sharing an appreciation of traditional lifestyles and forms of expression;
