Cheryl came to Whidbey with her husband in 2005 and joined Burley’s in 2006. Cheryl began her career in funeral service in 1979 at Floral Hills in Lynnwood. She has always enjoyed working with families. In her words, “if we can make it a little easier for families at one of the worst times in their life, then we have fulfilled our mission.” Cheryl and her husband, Dick, live in Greenbank. On the Surface was created by Barb Lyter in 2010 when she discovered that she could never find the perfect fabric to translate the ideas for her wearable art into reality. All of the fabrics used in the scarves, home textiles and clothing is dyed by hand specifically for the project. Embellishments used are hand embroidery, hand painting, beading, crochet, knitting, free motion embroidery and Sashiko embroidery, a 900 year old Japanese technique using traditional materials. All products produced by On the Surface are original designs and no kits or computer embroidery is ever used. Barb’s art is available at Garry Oak Gallery in Oak Harbor and at various shows.
