The current economic times have made it difficult to accomplish anything more than the most essential programs and services for those in need. Painting of the quarter century old kitchen would have been cost prohibitive without the volunteer labor performed. Tens of thousands of meals each year will now be provided from a cleaner, nicer looking kitchen facility which will do much to increase the morale of staff and volunteers alike. MEET JIM RAMLER
Volunteer Extraodinaire Jim Ramler is an amazing gentleman and extraordinary volunteer! He just celebrated his 7 year volunteer anniversary at Harbor Tower Village. We are so blessed to have Jim at our community every week. Jim leads our exercises Monday through Thursday; helps with activities, and just plain enjoys being a part of the lives of the residents at Harbor Tower Village. It would not be a full day at Harbor Tower without Jim. He also shares his volunteer life with The Bayview Senior Center in Langley, where he has volunteered for 8.5 years. After retiring from the United States Air Force after 42 years, where he lived in many different locations including England for ten years, Jim lived in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He later moved to Oak Harbor on Halloween in 1999. Jim has two children. His son lives in England, and his daughter lives in Freeland. He also has four grand children; one in Freeland, and three in England. In Jim’s free time he enjoys biking, stamp collecting, square dancing, and ballroom dancing. You may also see him walking around town several times a week. He is always on the go, which might explain where he gets all of his energy. He’s also been known to pick gallons of wild blackberries to share with his many friends. All of Whidbey Island is blessed to know him as a person, and to enjoy his generous volunteer spirit. Please feel free to stop by and visit with Jim. The first ten people who visit Whidbey Coffee, located on Highway 20 next to Wendy’s in Oak Harbor and mention Jim and his amazing volunteer activities will receive a free latté. Airborne adventure caps a Summer of fun After a fun-ďŹ lled Summer travel season of Crab Fests, White Water Rafting, Train Rides, Kayaking, Shopping, Musicals, Cruises, Whale Watching and Casino Hopping, Summer ended on a high note. A real sky high ying adventure. Pat Gardner escorted a group from the Oak Harbor Senior Center to the Paul G. Allen’s Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field in Everett for the “Free Fly Day.â€? It was Eastern Front Day featuring Polikarpoi I-16 Rata, PO/U2 and MIG 29. The Polikarpov Po-2 biplane was own by the Night Witches, an incredible group of Soviet women who ew bombing missions during World War II. The Po-2 was joined by the Polikarpov I-16 “Rataâ€?. In addition the Mikoyan MiG-29 demonstrated its power with a start up and taxi. Afterwards the group met in the hanger after the ights and met the pilots who ew these amazing planes. The Flying Heritage Collection showcases the spectacular warbirds and technologies from 1935-1945, with exhibits that shine a light on the humanity at the home fronts of the warring nations. Set amidst a restored working hangar, visitors of all ages can get up close and personal to these treasures of the sky, and learn how innovators and innovations of the past led the way to modern aviation and aerospace technologies. The main emphasis of the collection includes combat aircraft from World War II.
Examples include U.S., British, German, Russian and Japanese types, which were often pitted against each other in great air battles. These rare survivors were researched, hunted down and sometimes recovered from former battlegrounds and airďŹ elds. While a few specimens were rebuilt by previous owners, the majority on display have received restoration of the highest authenticity. In 1998, Paul G. Allen began acquiring and preserving these iconic warriors and workhorses, many of which are the last of their kind. Allen’s passion for aviation and history, and his awareness of the increasing rarity of original WWII aircraft, motivated him to restore these artifacts to the highest standard of authenticity and share them with the public. Join us next summer for a Free Fly Day when various planes from the Flying Heritage Collection are own to keep them operational and exercised on a regular basis. History buffs and aviation enthusiasts can witness the beauty and mechanical precision of these vintage aircraft as they are returned to the skies!

Christmas Quilt Raffle

Feeling Lucky? Harbor Tower Village Retirement Center will sponsor a $25 Jackpot Bingo game on Thursday, Oct. 13, and Banner Bank on Oct. 27. Cards for the $25 Bingo game available at intermission for $1. Bingo is played Thursdays from 12:15 to 3 pm.
