ART IN THE CENTER Our beloved Art Teacher Joan Brosnahan passed away in July doing what she loved best. Joan taught art at the Oak Harbor Senior Center for 25 years. She will be greatly missed by her students, friends, fellow artists and family. Monday will continue to be Art Day in the Center. We have two very talented teachers ready to take up their paint brushes and share their skills and talents with us. Please welcome Anita Johnston and Dottie Sanders. Anita will teach Monday mornings and Dottie will teach Monday afternoons. (It took two to replace Joan) Class descriptions are in the Learn & Grow section. Classes start this month. BRASS LEAF FOR JOAN In Memory of Joan Brosnahan, friends and art students are invited to contribute to the purchase of a brass leaf in memory of Joan for the Remembrance Tree in the lobby at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. The Senior Center Foundation’s memorial “Remembrance Tree” Fund supports the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Les Schwab spaghetti feed to benefit the Meals On Wheels program Les Schwab is sponsoring a spaghetti feed to benefit the Meals On Wheels program on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 5-7 pm at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Menu includes: salads, spaghetti with meatballs, garlic bread, ice cream, coffee, tea, milk and water. There will be several door prizes. Cost is $10 for adults and $4 for 10 years and younger. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. In 2010, over 31,300 Meals On Wheels were served by Senior Services of Island County. Support is needed because the program is not fully funded. North West Regional Council supplies only about one third of the costs of the services. SSIC needs to seek funding from other resources. They can ask only for a suggested donation, not the full cost of the meal. They target low income and do not turn anyone away if they have no ability to donate. However, they do appreciate additional donations to help fund the program. The service is so important because they are helping to bring seniors who are often alone, isolated, and can’t cook or prepare a meal for themselves. They’re trying to bring hope to seniors who are isolated and frail. The goal is to promote independence, prevent isolation and hunger, preserve personal dignity. They also try to help seniors stay in their own homes for as long as they choose to. The Meals On Wheels delivery also provides a personal friendly visit where the seniors can stay connected to their volunteers, and thus, the local community.

TECH TALK COMPUTER CLASSES A four-part series of basic computer classes will be taught at the Oak Harbor Library, Mondays, beginning Sept. 19 from 10–11:30 am in the Oak Harbor Library meeting room. Computer Basics, Internet Basics, Email Basics, and Microsoft Word Basics will be taught. Class is limited to 12 students. (Should have a computer). 25 Years Of Volunteers THE SHORTEST DISTANCE “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
BY ROXANN DUNN-TERRY I was going to start out with “25 Years of Memories, Thanks for the Memories,” then realized people might think this was my Farewell Column. No such luck. You’ll have to put up with me a little longer. :^) The Oak Harbor Senior Center celebrates its 25th Silver Anniversary this month. For 25 years the Oak Harbor Senior Center has served people in our community, 50 years of age and better. This has been possible because of the dedicated volunteers who have served at the center and in the community. Lives have been blessed and are better thanks to the
commitment and dedication of these special people – Volunteers. Many of the early Volunteers are no longer with us but we honor them for the foundation of volunteerism they built. It is important to remember that Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless! The Center is and always has been powered by Volunteers. Staff could never do it by themselves. In 1986 the doors opened with one paid staff person – Director Bridget DeMuth. In May of 1989 I was hired as the part-time Program Coordinator. In October of that year I went full time. Now we have 3 staff people - Director Mike McIntrye, Administrative Assistant Pat Gardner and me. During my interview process, Bert Bjorling asked me if I would treat a paid employee different than a volunteer. I was stumped. Of all the questions I had anticipated, I didn’t see that one coming. I didn’t know what to say. I finally told him how I felt. “I try to be nice to everybody.” I think it
helped get me the job. I’ve been here 22 years and I’ve tried to be nice to everybody. There’s been a few slip ups. A few times I was rather rude or got angry. A couple of people I could have happily thrown in the bay. Like the guy that came in and suggested I get a bunch of rocking chairs for the old ladies. They could rock the babies of young women and free them to have fun and enjoy life. I asked him what was wrong with the older women, (He was over 70 himself.) He said they were too old for him. He wasn’t too happy when I said I didn’t think younger women were interested in dating an old Coot and invited him to the Friday night dance to meet someone his own age. Another time a few people complained to Mayor Al Koetje about the new Program Coordinator. He asked Bridget why I was running around barefoot with flowers in my hair. She told him it was the Hawaiian Luau. For all my faults I will be the first to admit that I could never do this job

I may forget a name or face but I will always remember the feelings, fun and support during good and bad times that we’ve shared. A few people have suggested I write a book. Some day I might. For now, I want to live the story. Some of my favorite quotes are, “We’re made mostly by the people around us.” “Volunteers are Angels without Wings.” “When people help others they become whole.” “Love and Service are the greatest of all.” Albert Schweitzer said, “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.” Even a mosquito gets a pat on the back when he is working. Whidbey Island Genealogical Searchers meet the second Tuesday of the month at 2720 Heller Rd., at the fire station just north of Crosby Rd. Next meeting is Sept. 13, at 1 pm. Our program will be Laura Sparr who will tell us what preparations need to be made before visiting certain repositories including NARA, Family History libraries, city halls, courthouses, genealogy trips, etc. She is one of the most knowledgeable genealogists in the state and is a past president of the WSGS. Be sure you can stay to ask questions for a while after the meeting. MEET MARIE SALMONS
A Tiny Lady With A Huge Heart Marie Salmons may only be 4 feet 10 inches tall but her heart is as big as a mountain!!!! Marie has been a cook at Harbor Tower Village for two and a half years. She always has a smile on her face and can frequently be heard singing in the kitchen. The word “no” does not seem to be in her vocabulary when it comes to the residents at Harbor Tower Village. Marie takes her job of serving the older adult very seriously. It is a very important part of her heritage. Marie and her family moved to Oak Harbor from the Philippines in 2007. Marie opened an internet café in the Philippines in 2003 after receiving her bachelors of commerce degree. She left the business to her mother prior to her move to the United States. We hire the smartest and best at Harbor Tower Village. Marie and her husband have two boys ages seven and eight. Needless to say marie is a very busy lady, but never too busy to smile. Marie and her family enjoy fishing, camping and anything else that involves the outdoors. Harbor Tower Village staff and residents are proud and lucky to have Marie Salmons as part of our family. Please feel free to stop by and visit with Marie.
