2010 Silverdale Christmas Tree Lighting

Giveaway will be happening throughout December where each customer will receive a red envelope that contains a gift inside. A total of 1,000 envelopes will be distributed. Gifts can be redeemed in January and range from a free cup of coffee to a free meal once a month all year long. After a morning of shopping, the kids will be able to enjoy hot cocoa and cookies with Mrs. Claus on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. Mrs. Claus will lead a holiday story time and sing-along. Monica’s Waterfront Bakery and Cafe is located at 3472 NW Byron Street.

ick off the holiday season with the arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the tallest Christmas tree in Silverdale Nov. 27. The tree is located at 3510 Anderson Hill Rd. Activities will begin at 5 p.m. at Silverdale Antiques, 9490 Silverdale Way NW, with local Boy Scout troop 1552 leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. Carols will be performed by students from Jackson Park, Brownsville and Emerald Heights elementary schools. Coffee and cookies will be provided. Santa will make his entrance by arriving on a fire truck with a sheriff escort at 5:45 p.m. and will lead the countdown to light the tree. Children will then be invited to meet with Saint Nick. The evening is hosted by the Silverdale service clubs.
Old Town Silverdale Holiday Celebration What better place to spend an evening with friends and family than Old Town? The festivities in Old Town Silverdale begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 with Art Walk gathering the best artists from Central Kitsap and Bremerton. It will feature a variety of local artists selling their work, from potters to painters and photographers to jewelers, who have been deemed “the best of� by the Art Walk Committee over the past two years. Their work will be spread amongst 10 participating venues in Old Town. The Clear Creek Task Force will also hold a silent auction of salmon art during the walk. People will have the opportunity to bid on decorated salmon pieces created by community members, including local artists. In past years people have been creative and decorated their salmon cut-outs intricately from materials like metal, bottle caps and glass. All proceeds from the auction will go toward managing Clear Creek Trail. This coincides with the Chum salmon run in Clear Creek that generally runs through the month. “It’s an Art Walk but also a family event,� said Maria Mackovjak, Art Walk chairwoman, adding that the lighted holiday ships will be sailing

Keeping shopping local at Old Town The possibilities are endless when it comes to holiday shopping in Old Town Silverdale. Old Town Curios will have vintage holiday ornaments but if looking to expand outside the box on gift ideas, there will likely be something here. “If you’re looking for that weird relative, I probably have it,� said Michael Gordon, store owner. The shop has an array of items including swords, books that date back to the 1820s, action figurines and antiques. The strange and unique items come from Gordan’s world travels plus things he has picked up at estate and garage sales. Shoppers will have just as much fun searching for the perfect gift as the friend or family member will have receiving it. Old Town Curios is located at 8997 Pacific Ave. NW. For trendy gift ideas like cell phone cases or wallets made from recycled paper, check out Heart, 3472 NW Byron Street. There is an assortment of women’s clothing available including scarves and shirts plus a selection of jewelry.

lan Moore says the holiday season is the best time to drink. As the beer and wine manager at Poulsbo’s Central Market, he is stocking up on specialty wines, seasonal beers and gift packs for people to enjoy and exchange this season. “Winter is the most fun time of year for beer and wine drinkers, that’s for sure,� he said, adding that winter is especially good for beer connoisseurs, because there are more seasonal beers this time of year than any other. Moore is ordering beers people can only find once a year, and will have more than 30 winter beers on display. These include common winter beers such as Pyramid’s Snow Cap, Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale and Deschutes’ Jubelale, as well as rarer finds, such as the Great Divide Hibernation Ale and Avery Old Jubilation Ale, both from Colorado. In December, Central Market’s feature beer will be Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale from England. It will also sell gift packs, by breweries such as Chimay, Lindemans and Samuel Smith, which typically include two or three beers and a glass. For wine drinkers, Central Market will feature festive sparkling wines, including Spanish cava. Italian prosecco, French champagne and domestic sparkling wines from wineries such as Chateau Ste. Port wines — usually served with dessert — are more popular this time of year than any other, Moore said. Pinot noir wines, a lighter red wine, are also good holiday wines because they complement a wide range of foods one might have for Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. Moore seeks out rare wines for special occasions, as well, including the 2007 Columbia Crest Reserve cabernet sauvignon — Central Market receives three bottles of these in a whole year. For wine novices looking to buy a
wine that would please most palates, merlots and pinot noirs are typically a safe bet, Moore said. Local coffee shops are also selling gift packs that include coffee, tea and cocoa, if you’re looking for a more comforting gift. Fraiche Cup in Bremerton offers gift boxes that include cocoa and a mug or tea and a teapot, as well as chocolates and lotions. Bags of Pura Vida organic coffee and gift boxes of tea and mugs are also available. The Global Bean in Silverdale offers a $37 gift basket that includes whole coffee beans, loose leaf tea, cocoa and cookies.

Selecting the right Christmas tree is one of the most memorable holiday activities. Especially you have a large family that never agrees on what makes a perfect tree. In which case the wrong tree is sure to be a source of needless controversy. Though there are no hard-and-fast rules for picking a tree sure to satisfy even bickering siblings, there are a few handy tips that can make this family decision a little easier. * First and foremost: Always measure the height of your ceilings or you may end up having to trim from the top. * Know what size tree you need and not only will you find a perfect fit, but it helps narrow down your choices. * Make sure it’s fresh and inspect the tree thoroughly.
