e all know there are a lot of compelling reasons to shop in our local stores and businesses. Money we spend here stays here. it helps pay local wages, support local community services, put food on local tables, pay local rents and mortgages. and it funnels through to the many nonprofits by the generous donations of local businesses. do your holiday shopping on the mainland, and your money stays on the mainland. do your holiday shopping on the mainland and you’ll have to pay to do it: ferry fares and gas costs add up. Beyond being the community-minded thing to do and a possible money-saver too, let’s point out another compelling reason: we have some very cool stores in this county. When you have shop owners whose previous careers included artist, professor, interior designer, clothing maker, or corporate executive (just to name a few), it tends to make for an eclectic mix of merchandise. and it’s just plain fun to buy from someone you know and who knows you. it’s more casual and way more friendly. chances are

Celebrate the holidays with the warmth of music By Colleen Smith Armstrong
F
rom the traditional to the modern, orcas island has a rich history of holiday concerts. and this year is no exception. olga symphony and friends will perform a festive evening of music with friends – old and new – on friday, dec. 3 and saturday, dec. 4. The olga symphony and friends began this particular form of holiday musical merriment 13 years ago, born from orcas center’s “everything But classical Music committee’s Holiday Magic show.� Part of the olga symphony tradition is dressing up in black tie for the men, and sequined holiday finery for the women. The musicians encourage islanders to come in their own special outfits. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in orcas center. tickets are $5. The orcas choral society’s 33rd annual winter concert features songs of the

Olga Symphony and Friends are performing their holiday merriment on Dec. 3 and 4. season, including Yuletide carols and beloved favorites. “The joyous sounds of christmas 2010� will be performed saturday, dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and sunday, dec. 12 at 2 p.m. ticket are $10, $3 for students. The orcas island community Band will perform holiday songs, plus traditional band fare, on saturday, dec. 18 at 2 p.m. in orcas center. The community
is invited to sing carols and enjoy a free reception with food afterward. Musicians will also be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band. admission is by donation. The community Band will also play on friday, dec. 3, when the tree lighting takes place on the village Green. They will play holiday favorites starting at 4:15 p.m.

he salmonberry school will sell christmas trees again this season, starting on Thanksgiving weekend. freshly cut douglas and noble firs grown on a family farm in arlington will be offered in a variety of sizes, as well as some wildcrafted‚ island-grown trees. in an effort to make the fundraiser as sustainable as possible, the students have pledged to plant one new tree or native plant for every christmas tree the school sells. on jan. 6, salmonberry will offer a tree disposal service. any christmas tree that is free of tinsel and ribbon will be chipped and discarded for a modest donation. all proceeds support salmonberry school programming. trees will be available for purchase at the school, 867 north Beach road, saturdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. until dec. 19, while supplies last. trees may also be purchased by pre-order before dec. 1. ordering information is available at www.salmonberryschool.org, or by calling 376-5111. orcas Montessori will again sell holiday wreaths for its 16th annual fund-

GriďŹƒ th ocal holiday fairs offer plenty of great reasons to “shop the rockâ€? for gifts this year. skip the ferry ticket booth, the choked freeways and the checkout lines as long as december, instead spending leisurely, music-filled weekends finding treasures crafted by talented islanders. first of the season, the orcas island senior center Holiday festival of the arts is on saturday, nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair will host over 45 artists, some returning and some brand new, offering wares including jewelry, art glass, soaps, lotions, wood cutting boards, ornaments, hand-sewn kitchen items and more. Matthew olson’s violin students will provide musical entertainment and hot panini sandwiches and baked goods will be available for purchase. a silent auction will feature a frank loudin print, among other goods, and items up for rae include a deWalt toolbox, a knitted blanket by Magdalena verhasselt and a quilt by Karen Blinn. rae tickets are $2 each or three for $5, available at the senior center on weekdays or at island Market on saturdays. admission is $1,

Dance of the Elders, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass By Scott Rasmussen
T
he bright bold colors of Mexico will take center stage once again this holiday season as Friday Harbor observes not just one, but two of the more cherished winter-time traditions from south of the border. On Dec. 11, the main thoroughfare of Friday Harbor, Spring Street, will serve as the setting of the much-revered and equally boisterous Christmas-time custom known as the Dance of the Elders. The heartbeat of this traveling street dance, which weaves together religious and folk traditions into a single celebration, belongs to that group of men and boys who will don wooden clogs, an oversized mask and traditional peasant clothing and then lead a procession of spirited followers from one end of town to the other. The procession comes to a standstill every block or so, as the dancers break into formation and perform an array of time-honored folk dances handed down over generations. The clickity-clack of wooden clogs tapping against the hard surface of the town’s asphalt streets can’t help but command attention and is hard to forget.
The Dance of the Elders is more than just a showcase of folk dances, though. It’s infused with a spirit of reverence as well. A statue of the Virgin Mary will be hoisted onto the shoulders of the stronger souls among the followers, who then will carry this weighty religious icon for the duration of the dance as the procession meanders its way through town. Tentatively scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., the procession will start in the Port of Friday Harbor parking lot and weave its way along Spring Street en route to its final destination, St. Francis Church on Price Street. The following day, Dec. 12, St. Francis Church will commemorate the manifestation of the Virgin Mary in the “New World� more than 400 years ago with its annual observance of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass. A mariachi band will substitute for the more traditional church choir in performing hymns and musical accompaniment, and a post-Mass fiesta will take place at the Mullis Community Senior Center. The Mass begins at 7 p.m. If you’re not familiar with its origins, here’s a condensed version. According to Catholic tradition, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to a recent convert to the Catholic faith, a man named Juan Diego, on three suc-

cessive days as he strolled a hill outside Mexico City back in 1531. The final day was Dec. 12. Speaking in a native dialect, the apparition told Diego that an abbey should be built on that hill. His bishop, skeptical of Diego’s vision, instructed the man to produce a miracle as proof that the apparition was real. As the story goes, Diego returned to the hill and was told by the Virgin Mary to gather flowers, which, because of the season, would normally not have been in bloom. To his surprise, Diego happened upon a patch of roses in full bloom, which he then gathered in his cloak and brought back to show the bishop. When the roses fell out of Diego’s cloak, an image which has since been known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, or Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, as she’s known in Spanish, was imprinted on the fabric of Diego’s cloak. Over the years, that image became widely embraced not only as a religious symbol, but as a cultural icon and emblem of the Mexican people’s struggle for independence from colonial rule. St. Francis Church will observe a traditional holiday Mass on Christmas Eve at 5:30 p.m. and at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be caroling and holiday refreshments in the warmth of the freshly painted King Farmhouse, built in 1894. In the Etta Egeland Resource Center, sing some toe-tapping holiday music with Kirk Fuhrmeister & Friends, and enjoy hot food and cider next to the holiday tree donated by Mary Jane Anderson. Phil Mayer’s model train village will add some enchantment to the evening. Deadline to enter the Chamber of Commerce Holiday Decorating Contest is Dec. 2, noon. All aboard the Santa Ship Community Theatre’s Holiday by Scott Rasmussen
W
hen it comes to time-honored holiday traditions, nothing can touch the Santa Ship. In fact, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Santa’s first expedition to San Juan Island onboard the venerable Santa Ship. In the early days, most islanders got a lump of coal -- and were darn glad to have one. Times have changed in the 40-plus years since the Jolly ‘ol Elf first stepped off the Santa Ship, exchanging toys and candy for season’s greetings while touring the town with his entourage of elves. But for Kris Kringle and company, the drill once he steps foot in Friday Harbor remains -- like Christmas itself -- virtually unchanged.
Here’s how it works
Setting the stage for Santa’s arrival will be the Lighted Boat Parade, another long-running and much-celebrated tradition. Sponsored by the Friday Harbor Sailing Club, the parade of boats, individually decorated and illuminated in their holiday finest, will tour the harbor twice as the flotilla passes by Spring Street Landing to exchange cheers and
greetings with a crowd of well-wishers assembled along the waterfront. The parade gets underway at 5:30 p.m., or thereabouts. (If tradition holds, the Port of Friday Harbor will offer free moorage on the night of the parade to registered participants whose homeport is somewhere other than Friday Harbor). After its second pass, the flotilla gives way as Santa and his elves sail into Spring Street Landing onboard the esteemed Santa Ship. Following an extended meetand-greet at the waterfront, Kringle and company will climb aboard a fire engine and be whisked away, headed first for a reception at the convalescent center and then to Friday Harbor Middle School. At the middle school, kids of all ages can take a turn on Santa’s lap and share a heart-felt wish with Father Christmas. There’ll be plenty of candy canes on hand as well. So mark your calendar: Dec. 11 is the date. And be sure to bundle up and get down to Spring Street Landing early enough to stake out a spot. After all, the last thing one wants is to be caught crying or whining –even if it’s about an obstructed view – when Jolly ‘ol Saint Nick comes to town.
Much more than just the name has changed. The stage is set for a new era of philanthropy and entertainment as the San Juan Community Theatre breathes new life into a time-honored tradition this holiday season. Say “so long� to The Festival of Trees, and get ready to give a hardy “hello� to the Holiday Festival, which carries the festive theme of “Ring in the Season� to mark its maiden voyage as the theatre’s flagship fundraiser. All good things – as theater people probably know better than most – must come to an end. It was with that spirit that the Festival of Trees took its final curtain call a year ago after two wildly successful decades as the theatre’s marquee fundraising event. In its place, The Holiday Festival will be by design a departure from the past. That it takes place on a Friday, Dec. 3, rather than on the Trees traditional Saturday, is merely one example. But that’s a small plate of roasted chestnuts compared to the rest of what’s in store, and activity and movement will
share a leading role. The powers that be at the Community Theatre intend to utilize almost every inch of available space to present a free-flowing night entertainment, one in which festival goers can circulate from room to room as they see fit, and as an open avenue to showcase a tantalizing cast of featured attractions and top-notch performers as well. Topping the bill is well-known television personality John Curley, the event’s celebrity auctioneer. As emcee of the live auction, Curley, the former host of King 5’s acclaimed Evening Magazine, promises to put “fun� back into the business of “fundraising.� The lineup also features a silent auction, a trio of cooking stations where Chef Bill Shaw of Roche Harbor Resort and crew will serve up an array of zesty appetizers and culinary delights, and a musical performance by Bellingham-based classic rock band The Walrus, which will take center stage in the Whittier Theater at about 9 p.m. So mark your calendar: Friday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. Admission is $75. start the season out right with a visit to the lopez village lighting and gathering on nov. 26 from 4 – 6 p.m. in the village Park. once you’re in the holiday mood, it’s time to sample a selection of festive opportunities. the annual Wreath and Green sale, sponsored by the lopez union cemetery association, will begin on nov. 26. the event is a chance to peruse a wide variety of christmas decorations, and any proceeds go to the maintenance of center church and the cemetery. there will be two sizes of wreaths, swags and other evergreen decoration options along with christmas decorations to suit your every need. the sale will run through dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week. t is easy to forget the degree of need on Lopez Island.
With its pastoral loveliness, it is not an environment where lack of money is immediately obvious. This year, however, has been particularly difficult, with many families feeling the financial pinch. Those at the Lopez Island Family Resource Center know this need to be especially bad in the festive period. Patsy Haber explained how this year, the LIFRC has had unprecedented demands on their resources. “The economic climate has been really hard; we’re seeing the impact of a difficult situation that is greater than other years,” she said. Other aid agencies have also been stretched, which adds to the amount of people turning to the LFRC for help, Haber said. Although Haber is nervous that the severity of financial difficulties
may mean that less people donate, she is heartened by the consistently generous spirit of Lopez. “There is always that nervousness ... but it touches me when other people reach out, thinking beyond their own families and thinking of the needs of the greater family,” Haber said. LIFRC’s Spirit of Giving program allows people to contribute, in however small a way, to the overall success of the holidays on Lopez. Starting with Thanksgiving, the LIFRC will be running its annual Thanksgiving program, which provides boxes packed with all the goods needed for a Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, cranberries and vegetables. They are distributed to island families who have signed up for the service. The boxes will also include baked goods and breads homemade by community members. See GIVING, Page 20

loPez island GIVING FROM 19 last year the basket count was 29 and the individuals fed totaled 127. “We have a group of volunteers and staff to help organize, communtiy members are doing the baking, and we work with the grocery store to get food donations,” Haber said. following thanksgiving and the advent of other festive holidays, there are other ways to donate. the lifrc is looking for people to buy gift vouchers for people unable to buy food and gifts for their families. the best, and most festive, way to find out what vouchers are needed, is to find a “giving tree.” these are trees with gift certificate requests tied to the branches. they are located at local businesses like the Bay cafe, the Galley, islanders Bank, and sunset Builders supply. Gift certificates are to local stores like islehaven Bookstore, lopez island Pharmacy, Paper scissors on the rock, and islands Marine center as well as certificates to mainland stores where people can access clothing not readily available on island. Gift certificates should be brought to the family resource center by

It was fitting that “It’s a Wonderful Life” was staged in the Anacortes Community Theatre during the 2008 holiday season, because Old Town itself could very well set the stage for a remake of the classic film. Old Town’s commercial and cultural diversity make for a memorable experience. Restaurants range from American to Italian to Japanese to Mexican. Enjoy outside dining or dine indoors.
