Bulls, broncs to storm Thunderbird Arena By WESLEY REMMER
S
not-blowing bulls and bucking broncos will soon thunder through Thunderbird Arena. The Kitsap County Fair and Stampede returns Aug. 25-29, bringing some of the nation’s top rodeo talent to Bremerton for a five-day event that will culminate with the ESPN-televised Xtreme Bulls competition. Action gets underway Aug. 25 for the first day of the Stampede, which for the past five years has been nominated for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo of the Year. The Stampede, beginning at 7 p.m. each day through Aug. 28, features bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and team roping, among others. The Stampede is an official tour stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar PRCA Silver Rodeo Tour. The professional tour is divided between two divisions — “gold” and “silver” — based on the the size of the purse. The Stampede is one of 17 tour stops, according to the Kitsap Stampede website. On the final day of the Stampede, Aug. 28, the arena will be filled with pink for the “Are you Tough Enough to Wear Pink?” fundraiser, raising money for breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink. Pink merchandise will be sold at the arena,

as will raffle tickets, with prizes including quilts, bead necklaces, gift baskets and gift certificates. But perhaps the biggest draw for fans during the Stampede is the Xtreme Bulls event, which is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Xtreme Bulls will be televised on ESPN on tape delay, airing at 11 a.m. Sept. 19 on ESPN2, 8 p.m. Oct. 8 on ESPN Classic and 1 p.m. Nov. 7 on ESPN Classic. Bremerton is the ninth stop of 10 on the 2010 Xtreme Bulls Tour, which ends Sept. 4 in Ellensburg. The tour also stopped in Florida, Texas, Nevada and Wyoming.

The stars will shine on stage this year By LYNSI BURTON
C
ountry music star Luke Bryan will headline the parade of entertainment among the four stages at the Kitsap County Fair this year, ranging from dance to comedy to talent shows. Bryan, the country hitmaker with songs like “Do I” and “Rain is a Good Thing,” will perform at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the headliner concert stage near the carnival area. Limited reserved seats are on sale now and available for $21. Festival seating is free with fair admission. The main stage will feature entertainment all day Wednesday through Sunday, including comedy jugglers Brothers from Different Mothers, who will perform at least twice every day. Hypnotist Jerry Harris will mesmerize fair audiences twice each day on the main

stage, as well. Community groups who will perform throughout the week on the main stage include Gallery School of Music and Dance, Peninsula Dance Theatre, Kwon Tae-Kwon-Do, Elizabeth’s Tribute to Patsy Cline and Irene’s School of Dance, among several others. The main stage is located near the Van Zee Food Circus and
President’s Hall close to the center of the fairgrounds. The family fun stage, found near the food circus and kiddie carnival rides, will bring out family-friendly music and dance groups each day. Local star Little Elvis will perform Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and pro senior tap dance team Spectapulars will stomp it out Thursday and Sunday. Local variety show Girls Got Talent will perform twice Wednesday and child performers from Let’s Pretend Entertainment, billed as the “cutest show on earth,” will perform three times each day. Martial arts groups Okinawan Karate Blackbelt Academy and Sorano Karate will also show their stuff. Cowboy Buck and Elizabeth will perform family fun music Wednesday and Friday and the Bremerton-based Whisker Club will host the 13th annual Beard and Mustache Contest from 5 to
7 p.m. Saturday. Materials will be provided for children to create their own facial hair. The beer garden stage, located near Thunderbird Stadium, will showcase evening musical entertainment Wednesday through Saturday. The 21-and-over stage will feature local bands in a Country Jam Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. and 9 to 11:30 p.m. The Warren Brothers, a countryand-rock group, will hit the stage Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. and 9 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, you’ll find the Joey James Dean Band playing rock favorites and some original songs from 6 to 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to midnight. Dan Whyms and the Rock Island Line is a Johnny Cash tribute band that will perform hits from the country legend’s catalog 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday. All entertainment is free except for reserved seating at the Luke Bryan concert.
