He began washing cars for his father, Art, at the age of 12. “I took the client for a ride, and explained all the features to him - I didn’t know I’d sold it,” he said. Gamblin has been married to his wife, Jeri, for 32 years. They have 5 kids, including two currently attending college.

Now they’re tackling the highly competitive small car segment with vigor, and the all-new 2011 Cruze has set its sights on the big players – by bringing comfort, a gorgeous interior and promising fuel economy to the mix. Phil Bivens, Enumclaw Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Cars run about as deep in Phil Bivens’ blood as petroleum runs in the ground. Raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan - just 27 miles from Detroit, Bivens is the son of an automotive executive who spent part of Phil’s childhood working for Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan. “I grew up in the business, and appreciate the design and passion that go into vehicles,” says Bivens. Bivens, who moved to the northwest back in 1989, didn’t always want to be in the industry. “I spent four years as a ballboy for the Detroit Lions,” he said. “If I had to be something else, maybe I’d be the GM of a pro football team.” Bivens, who still enjoys football (now rooting for the Seahwaks and Huskies), is also an accomplished golfer and traveler. After growing up partially in Australia (where his father, Bill, ran Chrysler of Australia) and living in 16 different states, Phil has continued to travel. In the last year, he and his wife, Kerry, visited Lake Como in Italy, and Provence in France. Bivens’ wife shares his line of work; Kerry owns Toyota of Puyallup & Scion, and Kia of Puyallup. Bivens and his wife have been strong supporters of cancer research ever since Kerry’s father Glenn (Sawyer) became a victim of the disease. Among other charities, the Bivens also support a number of community hospitals. Keeping his family close, Phil’s brother, Doug, is a sales manager at his Tacoma Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram store. As someone who has traveled so extensively, Phil says he can truly appreciate the benefits of living in the northwest. “The people are calm, cool and collected,” he says. “Life is really a nice balance here.”

By Jon Alain Guzik, Driverside.com Overview Technically, the 2011 Dodge Charger should have only gone through what they call in the industry a ‘mid-cycle refresh,’ but Dodge updated the new Charger with a such a large number of refinements – over 4,100 – that they are billing it as an all-new car. And why not? The 2011 model is quieter, faster, more fun to drive, better looking and, well, we can go on. It receives a robust 370 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI engine, making it a perfect combination of power and size. Couple the impressive performance improvements with smart exterior modifications and an all-new interior, and we have ourselves a surprisingly good buy for a sedan in this segment. Truly, the 2011 Charger is a win for the reemerging Dodge brand. What’s to Like The drive is quieter and sportier than the outgoing model. Interior modifications make the cabin more upscale, and exterior styling boosts the coolness factor substantially. The power to price ratio is hard to beat in this segment. Who knew serious business could be so much fun? The team at Jay Lee’s Honda Service Department knows. They spend their days serving the most loyal customers in the automotive business, and working with close friends. Service Manager Nathan Phillips leads a team of five technicians and two detailers with nearly half a century of combined experience. “I’ve been impressed with how much customers love Honda cars,” said Phillips. “They score the highest marks in customer loyalty.” Service Adviser Jeff Parks described some of the odd ailments his team had been asked to repair. “I’ve seen anything from coins stuck in a CD player to wiring harnesses corroded from rodent infestations.” Parks said a customer once had mice ground up in their heater motor. Another had a bird stuck in his air filter. “We see all kinds of things,” Parks said. “But that’s our job – getting customers back on the road and happy again.” Technician Greg Biell described another unexpected rodent situation he’d had to clean up. He said a rat had made a nest in a car’s engine bay, and was standing on the timing belt when the customer turned the engine on. The rodent was immediately ground into taco meat and caused the belt to jump off. “When I looked, I could still see the tail,” he said. “It looked like a good sized rat!” Rodent problems or conventional ones, this Honda service team is ready six days a week to service Honda’s expansive selection of vehicles. Honda offers a three-year, 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on new cars, and a five-year, 60,000 mile warranty on powertrain components. Kerry Bivens never thought she would make a career out of the family business. After graduating from UW in 1988, she began working at the Seattle Center Foundation hoping she could utilize her degree in Speech Communications. But this work wasn’t as fulfilling to her as the car business was. It was at this crossroad that her father suggested she try something a little more challenging at the dealership – Financial Services Manager. Bivens (then Sawyer) wasn’t sure if this job would be a good fit since it had nothing to do with her field of study at the UW. Much to her surprise, and that of her father, she excelled in this role and went on to hold several other management titles within the dealership. Bivens later enrolled in the National Automobile Dealers Association “Dealer Academy”; a year-long training program that focuses on all aspects of dealership ownership and operation. With these credentials, tireless work, and the respect of her peers, Bivens has since taken her father’s place as the President of the dealership. A lot has happened along the way….Bivens helped her father acquire two new franchises; Kia of Puyallup and Daewoo of Puyallup. Daewoo vehicles are no longer sold in the United States, but Kia of Puyallup has been operating in Puyallup since 1995. Bivens brother, Ryan Sawyer, is now the General Manager and responsible for day-to-day operations. Jay Lee’s Honda of Sumner
While Sunset Chevy may be in its 84th year of operation, the business is evolving to embrace the future with all the old-time comforts of the past. Jerry Yoder, who started there in 1957 and took ownership in ‘96, is handing over the chairman role to Phil Mitchell, his sales manager since ’97. Both Yoder and Mitchell grew up here in The Sound – Yoder in Sumner, and Mitchell in Federal Way, after his family migrated to the Northwest from Monticello, New York. Both are family men - Yoder married for 33 years with two kids, and Mitchell for 17, also with two children. They also share a lifelong background in the auto industry. Yoder started out washing windshields and vacuuming cars at Sunset in 1957, when he was 14 years old, for 75 cents/hour. “It wasn’t my first job, “ said Yoder. “I worked in the berry fields when I was younger than that.” Mitchell started when he was
even younger. As the son of a car salesman himself, he began washing cars at McCann Cadillac (now Larson) when he was 13. When they aren’t working, both Yoder and Mitchell carry their passion for cars as their primary hobby. Yoder has built up a collection of 22 classic show cars, including the 1952 Bel Air he first acquired in high school, and a ’69 Camaro. He also throttles a 427 Chevy V8 in the competition speed boat that he races with his friend, Champion Thunderboat Racer Dave Villwock. Mitchell hasn’t built up a car collection to compare with Yoder yet, but he enjoys playing “dad,” taking his kids to sports practices every week. Sunset’s biggest footprint can be seen from almost anywhere in Sumner. They are well-known for spending half a million dollars to build the high school’s football stadium. Beyond that, they’ve given two annual scholarships to young people, supported St. Francis house, helping hands, local sports teams, American Cancer Society, and more than a dozen other local causes. Yoder’s motto is simple, and reflects his approach to everyone he meets: “You spoil me, and I’ll spoil you.”

Lee, a late-30’s father of two excellent golfers - Justin 16, and Jordan, 11 - grew up in Everett, and majored in economics at the University of Washington. A man with an athletic build and warm features, he is proud of his parents who moved to the American Northwest from South Korea after the war. Lee spends half the week in the Portland area, but looks forward to moving locally just as soon as his son graduates from high school. His greatest joy is hitting the greens as a foursome, bringing the boys and his wife, Maryanne. He’s played the local courses at Sumner Meadows, Bellevue and Fir Crest, but not enough to choose a favorite. Lee enjoys the car business because every day has unique challenges, and honestly, he loves cars. At home, he relaxes watching the history channel and the learning channel because he enjoys learning new things.

By Alison Lakin, Driverside.com Overview For 20 years, the Ford Explorer has been considered the people’s SUV, the one that took SUVs off dirt paths and onto pavement. The Ford Explorer is so synonymous with SUVs that it’s hard to imagine one that’s more crossover than rugged people mover. And yet, here it is, an all-new 2011 Explorer with a unibody frame instead of a body-on-frame design, a modification that sets the Explorer firmly in a gentler segment. It’s wider and longer now, but thanks to new sheet metal, it more closely resembles its smaller, redesigned brother, the Edge. And while it probably won’t be crawling over boulders any time soon, the Explorer still has the chops to traverse a good amount of rough terrain, ford about 18 inches of water and tow 5,000 lbs. The cabin features a refined, upscale look with the coolest tech and touchscreen integration we’ve seen in a production vehicle in this price range. And should you find yourself unconvinced that this generation is set to become another bestseller, check out the fuel economy – up to 25 mpg on the highway. Turns out, a lot can change in 20 years. What’s to Like Fuel economy numbers now rival the more traditional modes of family transportation – minivans and wagons. The third row of seating is surprisingly spacious enough to fit adults. The interior redesign has made for a more refined and sophisticated look with an abundance of soft-touch materials and tech. Engine and Drivetrain Ford fitted the Explorer with a 3.5-liter V-6. The automaker is quick to point out that the new, smaller engine is nearly as powerful as the outgoing V-8, delivering 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. Key Technology Evaluation Ford continues to push the envelope when it comes to in-car tech, and the Explorer hasn’t been excluded from its offerings. MyFord Touch, first introduced on the Edge, connects you to the car’s various functions through a streamlined touchscreen interface. Next-generation Sync improves upon already stellar voice recognition that allows you to control almost every function hands-free. Optional mobile WiFi, new for the Explorer, uses your WiFi adaptor to connect up to five passengers to the Internet. What We Think The Explorer has all the right components to remind buyers why it’s been successful for so long. The decision to scrap a V-8 might tick some people off, but fuel economy improvements, interior refinements and the addition of more tech than ever make the Explorer’s ‘pro’ list considerably longer than the ‘con.’

At the end of each day, Keith Fugate looks forward to seeing a happy face greet him in his driveway. His 30-year-old quarter horse, Pistol, lumbers toward him for a scratch and a handful of grain. Fugate, whose father started selling cars here back in Gregg and Keith Fugate 1954, is a man who appreciates the opportunities he’s been given in life. If he wasn’t a dealership president, Fugate said he’d likely be running a ranch, or acting as some type of coach or fishing guide. “I enjoy helping people live a more fulfilling life.” Fugate has two grown children - Dawn, 40, and Shane, 21 - and married his wife, Sandy, 33 years ago. He was born and raised in Enumclaw, graduating in the EHS class of ‘72, lettering in baseball and football. After a brief stint at college - and an even briefer stint as a shell diver in Hawaii - Fugate returned home to Enumclaw, and began working for his father in 1976. He enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors - hunting, fishing and golf are his passions. And when you can’t find him anywhere else, there’s a great chance he’s riding his lawnmower with his Bose speaker plugged into his ipod, drinking a cold one.
Gregg Fugate, Fugate Ford Gregg, like his brother Keith, was born and raised in Enumclaw. His personal story differentiates from Keith’s because he briefly pursued his passion and talent for baseball, playing four years of stellar ball in college. Posting a .486 batting average in his freshman year at Yakima Jr. College, Fugate led the Yaks to back-to-back state championships in ‘77 and ‘78. Gregg later graduated from Ellensburg’s Central Washington University in 1980, with a degree in education. After a short stint student teaching in Ellensburg, he decided to join the family business back home in Enumclaw. Married to his high school sweetheart, Teri (Feris) since 1981, Gregg has three children: Matt, Jamie and Carlee. His hobbies include golfing, fishing, drumming, watercolor painting and hiking. To hikers familiar with Mount Peak, Gregg is a common sight on the trail; he is often known to make as many as two trips per day. Gregg took the lead when Fugate rolled out its Mazda franchise in 1987, besting neighboring Mazda dealerships in Auburn, Puyallup and Tacoma for many years in total sales. Ten years later, he ascended to coowner with brother Keith at the family’s Ford dealership.

Everything in Jerry Korum’s life falls into five categories: Faith, health, family, business (automotive & real estate) or community. “If it doesn’t into those priorities, I usually ask if maybe someone else should be doing it instead,” says Jerry. Korum, a father of two and grandfather of seven, wedded his wife, Germaine, 42 years ago. Raised in Seattle, he graduated from Highline in 1960 and went to work summers at a flower mill in Montana, where his parents had migrated from. Years later, he found more hard labor at the Pacific Car Foundry in Renton. After five years of working for his father’s Dodge/Plymouth dealership, he bought his own Ford franchise… and the rest is history. “It’s been remarkable how all the dealers in Puyallup have hung together to keep prices lower here for 60 years,” he said. Today, when he’s not spending all his free time with his grandchildren, Jerry put his effort into community roles, such as president of the Puyallup Fair, or non-profits, such as the one he started. In 2001, Jerry founded the Korum for Kids Foundation, currently run by daughter Sophia, its Executive Director. To date the foundation has helped raise money for dozens of other kid-centric non-profits. Jerry is also proud of the South Hill YMCA, which bears the name of his father, Mel Korum. “I wanted to see his name on something important,” Jerry said. When he’s not working, Korum enjoys golf and traveling, as well as Broadway shows and concerts by world-class musicians.
Don Gillis is a life-long car lover, who has advanced to the stage of life where his primary occupation is playing grandpa. A full-sized print of Lee Teter’s Vietnam Reflections dominates Gillis’ wall, serving as a permanent reminder of the brothers he served with in the 3rd batallion, 4th Marines, prior to returning from the war in August of 1967. Stuffed in the corners of frame are adorable pictures of Gillis’ grandchildren, his pride and joy. His grandchildren attend school in Sumner, and he takes every opportunity to spoil them. His 13-year-old grandson, Carson, is finally old enough to go hunting. Gillis has lived in the Puget Sound region his entire life, attending high school in Edmonds before joining the Marines. His parents relocated to Edmonds from Vancouver in 1950, themselves children of farmers and among families of eight and nine siblings. Gillis got into the car business because he noticed his own bankrupting compulsion to purchase a new car every six months. He began working as a salesman in ‘71, purchased a share of Bill Pier Ford in Lake City in 1983, and bought out Arnie Dahl in 1996. Even today many employees from the Arnie Dahl era remain. Gillis and Riverside Ford contribute to the community with Sumner Rotary’s Food Bank Drives, local diabetes & heart association efforts, The American Cancer Society, and the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. When he isn’t selling American cars, Don enjoys fishing, golfing, classic rock, and duck hunting with his buddies in Argentina.

Enumclaw’s Kahne back in truck series Kasey Kahne will make his return to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in the Too Tough To Tame 200 at Darlington Raceway on March 12. Kahne will pilot No. 18 Toyota Tundra for Kyle Busch Motorsports. “Kyle has assembled a great group of guys over at KBM and I’m thankful for the opportunity to get back behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota Tundra,” said Kahne. “They’ve been very successful in a short period of time thanks in part to the support they get from Toyota. We came very close to a victory last year at Pocono and I’m confident that we’ll be in the hunt for the win again this time around. It is a common sight many an automobile owner is all to familiar with: A car is stranded on the side of the road with the hood open and smoke billowing out as an exasperated driver looks on shaking his or her head. An overheated engine can render a car useless in a matter of minutes. A vehicle is propelled by an engine that ignites gasoline and causes controlled explosions within. An engine can produce quite a lot of
heat. Compound this with external temperatures and an overheated engine may occur. Other mechanical factors can also cause an engine to overheat. These include a faulty thermostat to regulate coolant supply to the engine and even an inoperable radiator fan. Experts say an average car engine is designed to operate within 195 to 220 F. Anything above that could cause engine failure. Overheating can cause a lot of damage
A few simple steps keep autos looking their best Car enthusiasts will tell you that one of the best ways to maintain that new car look is to keep up with a frequent washing schedule. Removing road grime and other plagues of automotive paint on a routine basis keeps a car looking its best. There are some rules of the road when maintaining the exterior of a vehicle to ensure the finish remains in pristine condition. Keep in mind these dos and don’ts. Pickups require different skills Around 3 million pickup trucks are purchased and used for various reasons across the country each year. With so many light trucks on the road, the wise driver can take heed of safety precautions when driving this type of vehicle. Pickup trucks tend to be the safer of the two vehicles in a collision with another car. This is called “passive safety.” The larger size and the higher stance means the vehicle will probably suffer less damage than the smaller car. Its height also puts it on par with the bumpers of other trucks and SUVs.
However, pickups do have some disadvantages that will need to be taken into consideration in order to drive safely. Pickups have a higher rollover potential than passenger cars. Therefore, turning should be done slowly and corners shouldn’t be taken like one is driving on a racetrack. AccordingtotheDepartment of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, in 2007, the most recent year from which statistics are available, rollovers accounted for 59 percent of SUV fatalities, 46 percent of pickup truck deaths and
25 percent of car fatalities. Although pickups have a lower center of gravity than SUVs, they can still rollover if driven aggressively. Another thing to consider is the heavier weight of a pickup, which causes the pickup to have a longer stopping distance. This means pickup drivers will need to add an even greater space cushion between the pickup and other vehicles on the road to be able to avoid road hazards. Something else to consider is that pickups are not designed to be nimble, overly responsive vehicles. They are primarily designed for hauling. That means swerving around obstacles isn’t achieved as easily as it may be in a passenger car. Again, this drives home the point of leaving more space to react to the road.

What’s to Like The broad powerband of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine matches the bulky X5’s demeanor perfectly, delivering plenty of torque throughout the rev range. The handling is taught and predictable, bestowing upon this 5,000-lb-plus beast a hint of agility. Interior comfort is right up there with the best in the luxo-SUV business. Buyers can take advantage of up to $1,800 in alternative fuel tax credits. Engine and Drivetrain The X5 xDrive35d gets its power from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine that puts out 265 horsepower and an impressive 425 lb-ft of torque. Power is driven to all four wheels via a sixspeed automatic transmission with a manual shift override feature that should please micromanagers. Market Segment and Pricing At $51,300, the BMW X5 xDrive35d may sound pricey, but that represents a price premium of $5,500 over the base model X5. Factor in a $1,800 tax credit and that premium shrinks below the $4K mark. Its main diesel competitors include the Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTEC ($49,700), Audi Q7 3.0 TDI Premium ($50,900) and Volkswagen Touareg TDI ($44,350). What We Think The X5 xDrive35d looks to be the short-term solution for fuel-conscious luxo-SUV buyers. We understand that some people will always want a big car with a powerful, loud V-8, but aside from its diesel drone the 3.0-liter diesel delivers similar low-end grunt at a more reasonable price. Add to that a tall SUV chassis that’s actually somewhat nimble and you’ve got a winning package all around.

When he was only about nine or 10 years old, Manfred Scharmach started following his father to work. His father, a German immigrant to Tacoma and an automotive specialist, spent his days making expert repairs to European vehicular masterpieces; Manfred stood in awe. Nearly forty years later, Manfred oversees the operation of the plateau region’s neighborhood BMW dealership and Mini franchise, in the nearby town of Fife. “Nobody can snowball me,” he says. “I’ve worked in every department around here.” You can also say that BMW is in his blood. Scharmach was born in Tacoma to German immigrants from a tiny village near Hamburg.W In the rare moments when he’s not directly managing both the Mini and BMW dealerships, Scharmach enjoys boating (with his powerboat and fishing boat), skiiing, traveling, and watching nervously as his 19-year-old daughter, Madeline, competes in horse jumping competitions. It was Manfred’s foresight that helped to establish the Fife area as a regional hub for the luxury automobile business. It was under his direction that his BMW dealership relocated from the Lakewood area to their present location off of interstate 5. Acura and Mercedes-Benz then followed suit. Perhaps no other time of year is more anticipated than spring. After a cold winter, many people await the arrival of spring like a child awaits the arrival of Christmas morning. Among the more popular annual rites of spring is the road trip. For those planning their own road trip this season, consider the following tips to ensure yours goes off without a hitch. • Give your car a thorough wash. While it might seem obvious to get your car washed once spring arrives, few might be aware that a thorough car wash pays practical as well as aesthetic dividends. Over the course of a typical winter, vehicles are exposed to all sorts of harmful elements, including salt used to improve icy road conditions and slush and grime leftover over from winter snowstorms. These elements can create deposits that make it difficult for a car to run smoothly, resulting in poor fuel efficiency and possibly harming the vehicle even further. • Don’t forget the first aid kit, but pack it last. Road trips, especially those with active kids along for the ride, often include a few cuts or scrapes. That’s why it’s always wise to take inventory of the first aid kit before heading out on the road. Make sure the first aid kit is fully stocked since the last time you hit the road. However, road trippers can make great time and save a little money by packing a cooler filled with snacks and beverages. For those short on space, consider a collapsible cooler. Unlike traditional bulky coolers made of hard plastic, collapsible coolers fold up easily when not in use, creating valuable storage space as a result.

Car lovers can’t miss these film classics It’s the season for putting the top down, turning up the radio and cruising the country’s highways. Watch one or more of these car-themed movies to put yourself in the mood for some time behind the wheel. Thunder Road (1958): Lucas Doolin, played by Robert Mitchum, comes home from the Korean War and takes over the family’s moonshining business. He has to avoid big-city gangsters and the police in the process. Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen stars as the San Francisco cop looking to find the kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the ‘68 Mustang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double. American Graffiti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trouble. Stars Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Williams. This movie was directed by George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame.
Smokey and the Bandit (1977): For the ‘70s generation this is the definitive car movie, with Burt Reynolds at his best in the starring role. An iconic Trans Am steals many of the scenes, as does a hilarious Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Buford T. Justice. Mad Max (1979): The movie that made Mel Gibson a star was a low-budget Australian flick about a murderous motorcycle gang and a futuristic cop who takes it personally. The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal crosscountry car race. A who’s who of stars, including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed flick. Christine (1983): Steven King’s book brought to life centers on pure evil embodied in a 1958 Plymouth. Back to the Future (1985): While the starring car is out of commission for most of the movie, the tale of a 1980s teenager who travels back to the 1950s in a timeleaping DeLorean remains memorable to this day. Michael J. Fox stars as Marty
McFly, the time-traveling star. Ronin (1998): Former special forces soldiers and intelligence operatives now working as mercenaries embark on a new mission: retrieving an important suitcase from a man who is about to sell it to the Russians. Ronin is the Japanese word for a Samuri with no master. All of these men are Ronin, with their own agenda ... making money. Stars Robert DeNiro and Jean Reno and featuring what many consider to be film’s greatest car chase. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The Fast and the Furious (2001): An undercover cop infiltrates the underbelly of Los Angeles street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special effects than substance. The Italian Job (2003): Foreign car afficionados will enjoy the chase scenes in this movie about thieves attempting to pull the heist of their lives. Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron star in this remake of the 1969 classic. Cars (2006): The animated PIXAR film about a young hot rod, Lightning McQueen, who gets waylaid in a onehorse town off Route 66 en route to a big race. Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman, and Larry the Cable Guy lend their voice over talents.
