WELCOME TO THE DISTRICT FUELING BREMERTON’S CREATIVE REVOLUTION! What a year it’s been! What started as a collaboration between the City of Bremerton and the Greater Kitsap Chamber has blossomed into the Bremerton Creative District, certified by the Washington State Arts Commission. After two years of uncovering the hidden gems of incredible talent, passion, and assets in our community, we are moving from discovery to action and are now focused on a bold mission: igniting our local creative economy and securing a sustainable future for the Arts. To celebrate this period of massive growth, we are thrilled to launch the very first edition of The District! Inside this edition, discover our four pillars of focus—Visual, Performing, Literary, and Culinary Arts— as we dive into our new 5-year strategic plan. Just as Quincy Square has transformed our downtown, our new strategic plan and brand-new website serve as the anchors for a vibrant future built on collaboration, advocacy, and opportunity. GET TO KNOW THE BCD When most people think of Bremerton, they envision the Navy and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the region’s largest employer. Yet embedded in the heart of Bremerton is a vibrant and diverse arts community! Some people call it our quiet little secret. The Bremerton Creative District is out to change that by shining a spotlight on our community’s creatives. Bremerton is a kaleidoscope weaving together our diverse voices and quirky talents. Rooted in rich history and nourished by the water that surrounds us, we are working to turn local flavor into shared magic, feeding our souls. From art to entertainment to fine dining, Bremerton has it all!
DISTRICT PROGRAMS As part of its mission to expand the arts and grow Bremerton’s creative economy, the BCD has programs that are designed to do just that. Creatively Restored, the BCD’s signature program sets up short term displays in empty building windows on a rotating basis. The windows showcase the merchandise, service, or art of businesses and artists along with a QR code that will take a potential customer directly to the owner’s website or social media platform to purchase products or request services. This program helps building owners, artists, and creative businesses and organizations. Creative Arts Resource Team (CART) provides resources, including workshops, panel discussions, and one on one assistance to support creatives as they move from an amateur to a professional in each of the four pillars of focus. The CART will also be collaborating with other organizations to form a network of creative mentors.
DISTRICT EVENTS Although the Creative District collaborates with other organizations and their events, the BCD also hosts or co-sponsors a limited number of events. This includes Light Up Bremerton (Cover Photo), held in early March. The event is hosted by the City of Bremerton. Bring your favorite lantern, handmade, storebought, or bedazzled and help us brighten Quincy Square and downtown with a magical evening parade! The BCD is a sponsor of the unique KrampusNacht, held the first week in December that transforms downtown into a winter European folklore festival. It features the iconic Krampus Parade, music, art, an eerie and enchanting Krampus Market, costumed creatures, holiday mischief, and fun for all ages. 4 | BREMERTON CREATIVE DISTRICT
DISCOVER THE BREMERTON CREATIVE DISTRICT Quincy Square is the jewel of the Bremerton Creative District. Named in honor of legendary composer and music producer Quincy Jones, who discovered his love of music during some of his childhood years in Bremerton, this creative space brings people together to celebrate the city’s rich cultural history. Designed as a versatile community plaza, Quincy Square offers live music, cultural celebrations, First Friday Arts Walk, festivals, and more. The Square features public art installations, interactive musical instruments, interpretive historical displays, a performance stage, and a distinctive piano-key inspired pavement design.
Downtown also hosts restaurants, shops, galleries, and the Admiral Theatre and Roxy Theatre, both historic landmarks in Bremerton. The Admiral Theatre is one of Kitsap’s premier live entertainment and events venues, welcoming more than 50,000 patrons a year to world-class live performances. With its historic charm, stellar performances, and a growing lineup of mustsee shows, the Roxy Theatre is where unforgettable nights begin. Whether you’re a local or visiting Bremerton, both theaters bring the magic of film and live performances to all.
Encounter the Charm of Manette, where small town heart meets big-time flavor! Packed with charming, unique shops and irresistible, ‘todie-for’ dining, this vibrant community has it all! Come and enjoy family events like Music in Manette at Whitey Domstad Park, Manette Fest, and the holiday favorite, Magic in Manette. Take time to enjoy the great food and water views at the Boat Shed Restaurant or have a relaxed meal at Hound & Bottle, Café Kai, Khao Soi, the Manette Saloon, or Tamayo’s 2.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Meet Manette’s new neighbor, Eleven Winery. A Bainbridge Island institution, founded by Matt Albee, Eleven Winery recently opened a second wine bar in Manette. This new spot features wine by glass and bottle, fun events, community fundraisers, and a cozy, neighborhood vibe where great wine and good company come together. If your weakness is baked goods try the award-winning Saboteur Bakery. No trip to Manette is complete without visiting the great shops including The Weekender, Life in Mauve, and Manette Antiques. You can also check out many local vendors and businesses at Manette Fest held in September.

EXPLORE BREMERTON CREATIVE DISTRICT’S HISTORIC EAST AND WEST GATEWAYS Discover the charm of Charleston, the BCD’s West Gateway! Established in 1891, this historic district brings the past to life with a vibrant, communityfocused spirit. Charleston is lined with small, locally owned businesses. Callow Avenue and beyond offers shopping, arts, and dining, and with exciting new storefronts joining the community, there is always something fresh to explore!
Family-owned restaurants serve delicious international dishes in Charleston. China Wok opened in the 1980s, and its recipes have stood the test of time. Grab lunch or dinner at Gyro Star, Pho Tai, La Poblanita, or Suzy’s Kitchen! If you need a place to unwind, the dog-friendly Cafe Corvo or award-winning Ridgeline Brewing serve delicious drinks. From arts and crafts classes and supplies to live entertainment, many businesses in Charleston offer something creative for everyone.
McGavin’s Bakery, makers of the famous pink champagne cake, has been a beloved staple since 1942.
Take a stroll to view murals covering walls and buildings. In the heart of the district, an art gallery called Rimbert Illustration hosts art and dance classes, performances, and vendors. Explore The Charleston, a historic theater that presents a variety of music shows. Come to Callow every month for First Friday Art Walk and Callow Nights, which happens on third Fridays. Upcoming Charleston Business District events are fun for all ages. These include Cars on Callow in September, Calloween on the Saturday before Halloween, and Naughty or Nice featuring Krampus AND Santa. Charleston has so much to offer! Come see for yourself.
Encounter Sheridan Park (BCD East Gateway), where WWII history seamlessly blends
with modern, cultural living. At its center is Sheridan Park Community Center, operated by the City of Bremerton Parks and Recreation Department. This cultural and recreational cornerstone serves as the anchor of the East Gateway. It hosts activities such as basketball, pickleball, dance classes, workshops, and youth programs as well as high-profile events like the Wayzgoose Kitsap festival, where artists print massive linoleum blocks using an actual steamroller, and Artistry in Wood Show, hosted by Kitsap Carvers, which provides wood art demonstrations and showcases woodcarvings and handmade Pacific Northwest wood art.
The Sheridan neighborhood also boasts a number of restaurants as well as live theater venues.
Make sure that you experience Sheridan’s live theatre. Bremerton Community Theatre and Enoch City Arts each provide audiences with a unique experience.
For casual dining, enjoy Campana’s Pizza and Heathens Bakery but if you’re looking at a fine dining experience in an intimate setting, put Restaurant Lola at the top of your list. Owners John Hall and life partner Anna Bressi feature Northwest food with a touch of the South.
Bremerton Community Theatre, which opened in the 1940s, provides classic favorites such as Fiddler on the Roof to contemporary plays such as Night Sky. PERFORMING ARTS Bremerton rocks a lively music scene with standout venues like the Admiral Theatre, the Roxy Theatre, and The Charleston. From gritty punk shows to performances such as Kitsap Opera, Bremerton brings unforgettable live music and theater right to your doorstep.
Classical & Live Theater This upcoming season, Peninsula Dance Theatre is partnering with the Bremerton WestSound Orchestra in their production of Peter and the Wolf. Peninsula Dance Theatre, founded in 1973 by Lawan Morrison and currently under the Direction of Mallory Morrison and Nicole Cisler, has collaborated with the Peninsula Ballet Orchestra for PDT’s yearly production of The Nutcracker, for over 40 years. This synergy of live music and performance is a cornerstone of the arts in the Pacific Northwest, and is what makes these performances unforgettable. For opera buffs, Kitsap Opera has been dedicated to bringing opera to Bremerton and surrounding Kitsap Communities since its establishment in 1992. This winter be sure to enjoy Kitsap Opera’s performance of the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II.

Award winning Brother Don’s Bar & Grill is the place to go for great pub food and music 6 days a week. From the Blues to Jazz to Rock and everything in between, this community hub offers vibrant energy, strong local connections, and a dynamic rotating lineup of artists.
Standup Comedy/Burlesque/Drag/Karaoke Looking for a different style of entertainment? Bremerton has several pubs that feature standup comedy, including Dog Days Brewing or if games are your thing, Ashley’s Pub is the place to go. Also on the list is Remedy Speakeasy, a fun bar with a full-service restaurant known for its great array of entertainment including music, burlesque, and drag performances. If karaoke is more to your liking, check out Beyond Karaoke and South Pacific Sports Bar and Grill.

CULINARY ARTS Hound and Bottle is the epitome of a neighborhood dining experience. Like wearing your favorite pair of slippers after a long hard day, Hound and Bottle provides their patrons with a sense of ease and comfort. From the great ambience to each of their comfort foods and signature dishes, such as their Pot Pie and Dungeness Crab Cakes, owners Alan and Jody Davis bring everything together to wow local patrons and visitors alike. Hound and Bottle is not only a culinary treat, it is also visually delightful. The eclectic decor strikes the perfect balance between the warm exposed wood beams and industrial shelving and provides the perfect setting for a delicious meal.
Located around the corner from Quincy Square, Tipsy Blackbird Wine Bar is a cozy wine bar, perfect for date night or an evening on the town. Set inside a charming historic building, the décor is funky and filled with soft comfy chairs and sofas. This women-owned bar features a variety of wines as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They also serve wonderful charcuterie boards and small bites which are perfect for a fun night out. This is a perfect venue for social gatherings, book clubs, artist showcases, and other events and you can also often find live music and a variety of entertainment.
Craving a sweet treat? From McGavins Bakery and Los Encantos World Bakery in Charleston to Larry & Kristi’s and Saboteur Bakery in Manette to Butter Leaf Baking in downtown, Bremerton has some of the best bakeries around. Among them is Heathens Bakery in Sheridan Village. Heathens is a microbakery specializing in sour dough bread and some sweets including brown butter chocolate chip cookies. It also has a savory lunch menu. As an added plus, the quirky fun atmosphere is like visual cherry on top!
Need a pick-me-up? Bremerton’s neighborhood coffee shops fit the bill! Downtown? Cups Espresso & Café or Fraiche Cup will hit the spot. In Manette? Then Vim & Vigor is the one. But if you’re in Charleston and want to view some art along with your coffee then you’ll want to stop at Café Corvo. Owner Miranda Pinero has made this inclusive, pet-friendly coffee shop into Charleston’s neighborhood hub. She is also a huge supporter of the Arts and invites local artists to display their art!

Bremerton’s best-known art galleries are Rimbert Illustration Gallery & Event Venue, located in the Charleston District, and Collective Visions Gallery in Downtown Bremerton.
Bremerton has several art studios and events for classes and activities. Among them are The Young Artist's Studio, Elephant Shoe Studio, Unity Fired Arts LLC, and Mud Lab Bremerton.
CVG is an artist-owned and operated gallery that has provided an art experience to locals and visitors for over three decades.
Do you want to get your hands dirty and discover the satisfaction of making? Then Mud Lab Bremerton is the place for you. This hands-on creative studio was founded by nationally renowned artisan plasterer Sherri Gamble and celebrates traditional trades and tactile arts through intimate workshops and drop-in clay days. Whether you want to learn DIY wall resurfacing, sculpt custom ceramics, or simply slow down and unwind, Mud Lab is your space to get gritty, exchange ideas, and learn by doing.
More than just a gallery, Collective Visions is a dynamic community hub designed to connect artists and art lovers. Stop by during Bremerton’s monthly First Friday Arts Walk to discover new feature shows and view art representing works by over two dozen Puget Sound artists. As one of the region's premier destinations for visual arts, the CVG also hosts the highly anticipated annual CVG Juried Show—a spectacular winter showcase of Northwest talent. Be sure to check out ARS Poetica, an exciting collaboration between poets and visual artists held in February. Take a virtual tour of the CVG!

Street Art
Bremerton has a number of museums that include the Kitsap History Museum, the Turner Joy, the Puget Sound Navy Museum, the Bug Museum, and Typewriter Fever, a typewriter museum.
Don’t forget to check out Bremerton’s fun street art as you meander through the downtown and neighborhoods. In addition to the City’s public art collection, you’ll find art in alleyways, on private buildings, and on walls, and bulkheads.
Typewriter Fever is owned by Don & Britt Feldman. Collecting office machines since 1999, Don has amassed over 600 typewriters and adding machines. At Britt's suggestion, Don opened Typewriter Fever, a fun and quirky place filled with nostalgia! Take a stroll through Kitsap County’s past at the admission-free Kitsap History Museum and find wonderful curated historical displays detailing Kitsap's heritage through interactive exhibits and audio histories. Located in Quincy Square, the Museum is a quiet jewel in an active streetscape.

LITERARY ARTS It is also home to the Ballast Book Company. Located in the heart of downtown Ballast Book Company is Bremerton’s literary haven! Shoppers instantly light up, browsing the colorful shelves with wide eyes and smiles. It is the perfect place to get delightfully lost among a beautifully curated world of books and stories.
Bremerton is fortunate to have a vibrant literary community with dozens of local authors, literary groups such as Kitsap Literary Arts & Writers and Kitsap Writers Circle, as well as several literary events, including the Puget Sound Book Festival, Bremerton Zine Fest, and Bremerton by the Book.
In 1860 two year old Abake was kidnapped along with her mother and two sisters and carried across the Atlantic Ocean on the Clotilda, the last slave ship to reach the United States, to become a slave to a plantation owner. This is the basis of Matilda’s Story, written by her four greatgranddaughters, Elizabeth Sanders, Dr. Dorothy Slones-Durr, Gwendolyn Gamble, and Deborah Smith. Prior to the 2019 pandemic, former professor and historian Dr. Hannah Durkin discovered living descendants of the Clotilda, allowing the Sanders sisters to learn about their greatgrandmother, Abake, whose name was changed to Matilda McCrear. In a conversation with sister Elizabeth Sanders, a Bremerton resident, she
Owner Kate Larson has always been an avid reader who wanted to have her own bookstore. In fact, as a child her parents often found her at night reading under the covers with a flashlight! So, it was natural when the opportunity came, Kate jumped at the chance to acquire Ballast Book Co. from its then parent company, Liberty Bay Books. Now in her sixth year of ownership, when asked what makes Ballast Book Company special, Kate’s quick response was “Our community; the people who come in love books and support small businesses.”
talked about co-writing this book in order to tell the world about her greatgrandmother. Matilda’s Story is also about the sisters’ fight for civil rights growing up in the South during the 1960s, along with notables including Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis. As high school students, the youngest sisters, Dorothy, Gwendolyn, and Deborah, were repeatedly jailed and risked their lives in pursuit of equality. During one demonstration, Gwendolyn was severely beaten by a member of the Ku Klux Klan. For Beth, the biggest takeaway is the importance of family, knowing how your ancestors contributed to this country. “Let’s make sure that people in this country understand how important freedom is.” 13 | BREMERTON CREATIVE DISTRICT
Despite challenges of running an independent bookstore such as navigating the direct competition of online sales companies like Amazon and the current atmosphere of book banning, Kate clearly loves owning her own store. In fact, much of her life revolves around her store, literary events, and literary friends, which is why this spring, she proudly launched Bremerton by the Book, Vol. 1, a vibrant festival in Quincy Square celebrating the incredible independent authors right here in Bremerton and Kitsap County. This event featured over two dozen authors and a myriad of literary genres, including fantasy, sci-fi, romance, mystery, and non-fiction. In case you’re wondering, Kate’s favorite genre is sci-fi/fantasy because she is constantly amazed by the imaginations of the authors and where those imaginations lead.
Bremerton Zine Fest is the West Sound’s first zine and small press festival. Zines are self-published, small circulation booklets or magazines. This year’s event was held in conjunction with the West Sound Film Festival at the Roxy Theatre. Kitsap Literary Artists & Writers is a coalition of writers and artists supporting each other to help the average person find their way through the maze of writing, publishing, and marketing their book. FALL FOR THE ARTS GALA & AUCTION Experience the arts! Join the Bremerton Arts Commission, Olympic College, and the West Sound Arts Council on September 12th at Olympic College Art Gallery for an unforgettable evening celebrating our local Arts.
ROOSEVELT SMITH MEMORIAL GRANT Roosevelt Smith loved to talk about Bremerton’s Black pioneers and history, and he loved vibrant color, and he expressed that love when deciding what art should be added to the Bremerton Arts Commission’s art library. Roosevelt was a beloved member of the Commission and in order to honor him upon his passing, the BAC established the Roosevelt Smith Memorial Grant. This grant is aimed at supporting emerging local youth artists and art organizations, reflecting the commitment to cultural expression and diversity in Bremerton.
Fall for the Arts Gala & Auction brings artists, patrons, collectors, and community leaders together for a night dedicated to culture, creativity, and connection. Guests will enjoy a curated exhibition, entertainment, refreshments, and the opportunity to support the Arts. Along with providing creative experience the gala also provides local arts scholarships, mini
grants and public art. We invite you to be a part of this celebration by joining the arts registry/creative district registry, so you can receive an invitation and save the date.
BREMERTON PUBLIC ART BREMERTON PUBLIC ART WALKING TOUR Step into Bremerton’s vibrant creative side with our self-guided Downtown Public Art Walking Tour to discover striking sculptures, colorful murals, and captivating installations. The tour visits only some of Bremerton’s many artworks, so we encourage you to keep exploring neighborhoods, parks, and community spaces to discover even more pieces across the city.

UTILITY CABINET ART
Open Air Gallery, located on Washington Avenue between 6th Street and 11th Street, is a series of art panels highlighting Bremerton and its surrounding landscape. Periodic Calls for Art are released for additional art panels.
Utility cabinet art wraps are a partnership between Bremerton Arts Commission and the City’s Public Works Department. The Arts Commission’s goal is to locate public art in places that will have the greatest opportunity for the public to experience. While the majority of the cabinets have been wrapped, the Commission is still seeking Art to install on the remaining cabinets.
BREMERTON’S POET LAUREATE Bremerton’s Poet Laureate, Sarah Steinke is Bremerton’s literary ambassador, transforming community life by making the Arts accessible to everyone regardless of demographic. One of Sarah’s signature programs is her writing prompts posted on the Bremerton Parks & Recreation Facebook page. This exercise invites the public to pause, reflect, and create a tiny poem that speaks across time.
