62nd Annual Dignity Memorial Armed Forces Day Parade

At 62 years and going strong, the country’s largest and longestrunning Armed Forces Day Parade will march through the streets of Bremerton starting at 10 a.m. Fall in early for a good seat! Navy Vice Admiral Kevin M. McCoy, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, will take on the duty of serving as grand marshal for the Dignity Memorial Armed Forces Day Parade. Also serving as a grand marshal is 2010 Olympic bobsledder Bree Schaff.

More than 150 entries, including nearly two dozen bands and Pearl Harbor survivors, will show their pride in our country’s military branches by parading through the streets. The newly selected Armed Forces Festival Ambassadors will also make their first public appearance and Combat Veterans International’s motorcycles will offer a moving tribute to service members If you can’t make it in person, the parade will be broadcast live on Bremerton Kitsap Access Television.

2010 Puget Sound Energy Armed Forces Festival Ambassadors Program

S

ix finalists took part in the 2010 Puget Sound Energy Armed Forces Festival Ambassadors Program. The students were selected based on their academics, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, letters of recommendation and an essay entitled: “What freedom means to me.� The final event of this scholarship program was April 28 at the Keyport Museum. Master of Ceremony was comedian and Armed Forces Festival Chairman Cris Larsen. This was the final judged event. Finalists did presentations based on interviews they conducted with either a military veteran or a foreign-born national who has chosen to become an American citizen. Finalists also answered impromptu questions.

Scholarships awarded:

First Place $2,000 (provided by First Command Educational Foundation) Second Place

$1,500 ($1000 provided First Command; $500 by individual sponsors) Third Place $1,000 (Herbert Goodman Scholarship) Fourth Place $750 (provided by Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce members) Fifth Place $500 (provided by Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce members) Sixth Place $100 (provided by Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce members) In addition, a $100 cash award for the best essay was presented and the candidate who has the most admission tickets redeemed wins an additional $100.

First Place, Anthony Zendejas The son of Margot and Tony Zendejas, Anthony lives in Bremerton and attends Klahowya Secondary School. He has become well known in our community as the young man who became an expert on the rescue of

the men who were involved in the Bataan Death March. What started out as an eighth grade report has blossomed into travels throughout the Anthony Zendejas United States and now the world to perform his one-man play, “The Ghost Soldiers of Bataan,� based upon his research. This summer, Anthony will be traveling to Japan at the request of Japanese journalists, who wish to find out more about that part of their history. Anthony was the first student to be sponsored by the State Veterans Home in Retsil to be a delegate to the Evergreen Boys State. There, he did them proud when he was selected to be the Majority Party Leader. Somehow, Anthony also finds time to sing with the Vocal Jazz Ensemble for holiday events and nursing homes.

He has performed for the Performing Arts Association Swing Dance. He has performed in and has designed lighting schemes for a community theater production. Anthony has done voice-over work for a promotional video for the Children of the Nations. He has earned the rank of black belt in Moo Duc Kwan Karate. Anthony is sponsored by the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League Council. Second Place, Carlie Rouse The daughter of Melissa and Scott Rouse, Carlie lives in Port Orchard and attends Crosspoint Academy. She is the secretary of her senior class and has been on Honor Society all four years of high school. Carlie Carlie Rouse is captain of three varsity team sports, crosscounty, basketball

and track. She served as vice-president of spiritual life in her junior year. She has earned “student of the month� awards many times. She volunteered to be the manager of a boy’s basketball team, when she was still in ninth grade. For two summers, Carlie volunteered for the Summer in the USA program and worked with teens who were visiting from the Basque area of Northern Spain. During her two mission trips to Guatemala, she was inspired to study medicine in college to later be able to assist third world countries. Carlie is sponsored by Bank of America Home Loans. Third Place, Trish Erhardt The daughter of Charlotte and Mitchell Erhardt, Trish lives in Poulsbo and attends North Kitsap High School. Trish is very musically inclined. She plays classical guitar and performs regularly in a Trish Erhardt quartet. She has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. She volunteers with the teen mentor program. Her English teacher is so impressed with her leadership skills that he has picked her to be his teaching assistant this spring. Trish also received the Lifetime Fitness Award. She is employed part-time at the Dairy Queen restaurant. Trish is sponsored by Kitsap Bank. Fourth Place, Stacie Brown The daughter of Deborah and Brad Brown, Stacie lives in Poulsbo and attends North Kitsap High School. Stacie is a member of the NKHS

Honor Society. In addition to attending school at North Kitsap, she has been enrolled in classes at Olympic College for the last two years, where she has been on the dean’s list. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a college honor society. She Stacie Brown was awarded for completing over 150 hours of community service through the Leo Club. Stacie currently is the class president of the local LDS church’s young women’s group and was awarded their “Young Womanhood� recognition medallion. Stacie has performed in her high school’s production of “Grease� and “Peter Pan.� She has danced with the Liberty Bay Danceworks for 14 years. Stacie is employed part-time as a lab tech at Olympic College and works as a substitute dance instructor at her local dance studio. Stacie is sponsored by Kitsap Credit Union. Fifth Place, Torrie Oeser-Beaton The daughter of Jennifer and David Beaton, Torrie lives in Bremerton and attends Bremerton High School. She is the vice president of National Honors Society. Torrie is a member of Torrie Oeser-Beaton the Key Club. She serves as a representative on the Associated Student Body/Faculty Association.

Torrie volunteers with the Special Olympics and is a member of the International Studies Club. She is always one to take on a leadership role. She does everything from helping to emcee various events to helping to raise funds for the various groups she volunteers for. She works part-time at Safeway grocery store. Torrie is sponsored by the Federal Managers Association. Sixth Place, Misty Braddock The daughter of Anita and Brian Braddock, Misty lives in Bremerton and attends Bremerton High School. Misty is an excellent bowler and has served on the Bremerton High School Bowling Team Misty Braddock for three years. Misty volunteers for the early childhood care and education program at Westsound Technical School. Her supervisor has been extremely impressed by her

one-on-one rapport with the children. Misty used to babysit neighborhood children every day after school. She also volunteers at the West Hills Elementary school’s autistic preschool Room. Misty works part-time at the Navy Exchange at the Bremerton Shipyard. Misty is sponsored by Land Title of Kitsap County. The Armed Forces Festival Ambassadors’ first public appearances will be at the: • Armed Forces Festival Luncheon at Tucker’s at Gold Mountain Golf Complex on Tuesday, May 11 • 62nd Annual Dignity Memorial Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 15 in downtown Bremerton • Bremerton/Olympic Council of the Navy League’s dinner at the Admiral Theatre Saturday, May 15 They will continue to represent Bremerton at other parades and functions throughout the year. “Brand be Damned� Motorcycle Poker Run 8:30 a.m. The Brothers Powersports, 5205 First St., Bremerton Motorcycle enthusiasts from around the Puget Sound will mount up for a fun ride around the Olympic Peninsula with secret stops along the way. One stop for sure will be the Military Culinary Arts Competition at Olympic College. Military Culinary Arts Competition 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bremer Student Center, Olympic College, 1600 Chester Avenue, Bremerton Military chefs and culinary specialists from throughout the Puget Sound region will compete in the Military Culinary Arts Competition. Kitsap HydroFest on Kitsap Lake 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The regatta will feature outboard powered hydroplane and runabout races. Races will include 14 classes with two heats each of the limited hydroplanes and runabouts. The boats range in size from 8 to 12 feet with drivers ranging from juniors, beginning at 9 years old, all the way up to seniors. Kitsap Lake Park will be available for spectator parking.
