Meet Margaret Cavendish, 17th-century philosopher, poet, playwright – a scandalous Jill-of-all-Trades and mistress of none. In her unapologetic pursuit of fame, Madge ditches her dysfunctional family to join the court of an unruly Queen and leave her mark on history. This bawdy comedy is loosely based on history, but more than anything it’s a celebration of a wild woman who never settled for anything less than achieving her dreams. Paying homage to Jane Austen and Tina Fey in the same breath, this laugh out loud contemporary-period mashup suggests that perhaps a woman’s hunger for unbridled attention is not so shallow, after all.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Rose is an award winning writer of stage and screen. Her musical After the Rain, co-written with composer Suzy Wilde, premiered at Tarragon Theatre co-produced by the Musical Stage Company. Her comedic plays include: Mad Madge, Innocents (winner of the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Tom Hendry Comedy Award), and Killer Queens (a murder mystery). Dramatic works include: Milo 2.0, and Lo (or Dear Mr. Wells) which was nominated for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play. Her plays have been seen in theatres across the country including here at Neptune Theatre, Crow’s Theatre, Nightwood, Globus Theatre, Great Canadian Theatre Company, and the National Arts Centre. She has twice been named a top ten theatre artist by Glen Sumi and is published with Scirocco.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I will utilize this space, in this program, to gush over the talent we have here in Halifax! So often patrons will grab me and ask where we get our actors from - so often I am able to happily report ‘right here, from Nova Scotia.’ So often folks assume we must bring everyone in. It’s part of a regional theatre’s mandate (and purpose) to raise up local artists, whilst also welcoming a healthy ratio of artists from other cities. It’s that delicious cocktail that I enjoy making show by show. I’ve been part of this community since 1998 and I celebrate the actors that choose to make their art right here. Not just the onstage talent. The people that you don’t see: the set builders, carpenters, the sewers, props makers, wardrobe staff, technicians, the craftspeople that make all this a reality. I am so happy to bring you our production of Rose Napoli’s play, Mad Madge - the bawdiest of bawdy comedies! I saw this play when it premiered at Nightwood Theatre, in Toronto, in early 2024. Rose herself played Madge and the production was so much fun and so appealing to me I tracked the playwright and star down at the party afterwards and gushed about her play, I told her I really wanted to have it be part of Neptune and asked her permission to create an East Coast production with me at the helm. I was thrilled she agreed. Now I am so very nervous about having Rose come visit to see our show! I just want her to be happy!

At the tail end of 2025, as we started working on this show, the Neptune family was saddened to learn of the passing of one of our own, scenic artist Al Collette. For nearly half of Neptune Theatre’s history, our productions have been wrapped in Al’s artistry. If you have attended one of our shows over the past several decades, you have experienced his work. He literally brought us colour; he gave us texture; he raised the bar. Al was deeply committed to quality and craft, helping to set and elevate the standard of our productions year after year. He was a fixture in our family and a valued colleague to generations of artists and crew.
More than his immense talent, Al will be remembered for the warmth, generosity, and sense of community he always brought with him. He will be sorely missed. His final scenic work was on Mad Madge. The set pieces you see tonight were mostly completed before his passing. We dedicate this production to Al’s memory. CHAIR’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Neptune Theatre community, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Mad Madge by Rose Napoli an irreverent, imaginative, and joyfully defiant celebration of a woman who refused to play by the rules. Margaret Cavendish was a force far ahead of her time: a philosopher, poet, scientist, author, and playwright in an era when women were expected to be none of those things. This production embraces her boldness with a bawdy comedic flair - loosely rooted in history but driven by the thrill of a woman fearlessly pursuing her dreams. With a spirited wink to both Jane Austen and Tina Fey, Mad Madge reminds us that a desire to be seen, heard, and unapologetically oneself is anything but shallow.
