As you know, this is a big year for Neptune, with Dr Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas spreading Christmas disgust all over the holiday season, Les Miserables as our mammoth season closing musical and a plethora of varied plays between now and May 2027.
Welcome to Neptune Theatre's production of this absolutely bonkers take on the Dracula story we all know and love. After the delicious heartbreak of our season opener, RENT, right here on the Fountain Hall stage, I felt it important to deliver something irreverent, bold, naughty and funny as a follow-up. I have taken great joy in gathering a delightful cast of five that I thought would enter into the spirit of the piece, not being afraid to dive into a gigantic pool of zany, macabre, and, even inappropriate, comedy. What a treat it has been to get into the comedy weeds and mine this script for every laugh we could dig up. We have laughed in the rehearsal hall. What a fun experience it has been.
I hope that we see you many times before the year is done. The very fact you are reading this program note tells me that you are at Neptune, supporting the live theatre industry in Nova Scotia. The board’s responsibility is not to carry the theatre through a single season, but to ensure there is another one after it, and another after that. Neptune’s Endowment Fund exists for that purpose. Gifts to the fund are invested permanently and generate income year after year, allowing the theatre to plan with confidence and depend less on the conditions of any one season.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors! There are moments in history when the world feels heavy, complicated, and a little too serious. In times like these, I believe laughter is not a luxury, but is essential. It brings us together, gives us room to breathe, and reminds us that joy still has a place in our lives. That is one of the great powers of theatre: taking a story we think we know and turning it completely on its head. Dracula has been haunting our imaginations for generations, but tonight, the fangs are out and the laughs are coming fast. This is theatre doing what it does best: surprising us, bringing us together, and inviting us to see something familiar in an entirely new way.
Every actor on the stage tonight is a Nova Scotian (either by birth, or by choice) and when you attend a show at Neptune you are helping us hire as local as possible. And if you #LoveLocal as much as we do, be sure to check out Deepwater, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and Seis Grados en Mayo this season - all written by Atlantic Canadians. ABOUT THE SHOW SUMMARY Ever wondered what would happen if you took Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale and put it into a blender with Mel Brooks, Monty Python, and The 39 Steps? That’s just what happens in this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud, gender-bending romp. In the treacherous mountains of Transylvania, a meek English real estate agent takes a harrowing journey to meet a new and mysterious client, who just happens to be the most terrifying and ferocious monster the world has ever known. As famed female vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing and company chase Dracula from Transylvania to the British countryside to London and back, their antics are guaranteed to increase your pulse and cause bloodcurdling screams—of laughter. HISTORY Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors premiered off-Broadway at New World Stages on September 4, 2023. The play was first commissioned by the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and was further developed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Capital Rep in Albany, NY and at the Segal Centre in Montreal, all under the direction of Gordon Greenberg. AUTHORS GORDON GREENBERG has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and in London’s West End, written for television and stage, and developed, directed and produced new works for arts institutions across America. Current directing/writing projects include The Heart of Rock and Roll, which opens on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theatre in April 2024, following its record-breaking run at The Old Globe, the hit off-Broadway show Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors (Director & Co-Writer with Steve Rosen, New World Stages & podcast starring John Stamos, Laura Benanti and Annaleigh Ashford), a new musical about Picasso (directing and co-writing with Stephen Schwartz and Caridad Svich), the NBC television series Most Talkative (Co-Executive Producer/Writer, NBC, Blumhouse, Andy Cohen), Crime and Punishment, A Comedy (directing and co-writing with Steve Rosen) for the Old Globe, a London revival of The Baker’s Wife (Menier Chocolate Factory, 2024), Single White Female (A.T.G.), The Wedding Banquet (Ang Lee, Hua Musicals, Taiwan), Ghost Tour, The Play and the new comedy podcast series Rolling Calls, starring Julie Halston and Richard Kind (co-writer, Steve Rosen). STEVE ROSEN (he/him) has previously collaborated with Gordon Greenberg on the musical The Secret of My Success (co-book, Joseph Jefferson nomination), the plays Crime and Punishment, a Comedy (Old Globe) and Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG Christmas Show (Old Globe, George Street Playhouse), as well as podcasts Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors and Rolling Calls (Broadway Podcast Network). He has also co-written (with David Rossmer) the book, music and lyrics of 50 First Dates, The Musical (London, The Other Palace), The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation (Seattle’s 5th Ave) and The Other Josh Cohen (off-Broadway), which was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards, as well as the Lucille Lortel and Off-Broadway Alliance Awards for Best New Musical.
