Newsies has long been one of my favourite musicals. Growing up with the original movie musical, I sang and danced to these songs in my living room. However, what stayed with me most was its message: young people finding their voices, standing up to injustice, and discovering the power of collective action. The real-life Newsies of 1899 were children aged 4 to 16, fighting for their rights and livelihoods—ever reminiscent of the young people in 2026 who continue to stand up for human rights. It asks what happens when those with the least power refuse to stay silent: a question that feels urgent today.

This production marks my return to directing after focusing on my teaching and social work career. I am thrilled and honoured that Sharisse and Maddie—both former students of mine and now leading the Neptune theatre school—brought me on to guide this creation. It has been a beautiful full-circle moment, and their leadership has fostered an environment rooted in education, collaboration, and community care.

Musical theatre, like social work, creates spaces where diverse voices can be more profoundly heard. It is a place where people from every walk of life can find connection, purpose, and belonging. Newsies reminds us that the fight for justice is ongoing, and that young people continue to lead the way.

I am profoundly grateful to Tracy and Geordie for their creative collaboration and inspiration, Sara and Kaitlyn for unwavering support. Lucas, Diego, Ryan, Dylan, Ella and all the brilliant production folks for bringing vision and art to life. To the parents, volunteers, Neptune staff, and especially these remarkable young performers: thank you for your dedication, your energy, and for believing in the power of community and musical theatre magic: we CAN seize the day and change the world.

Welcome to the Neptune Theatre School’s Youth Performance Company’s production of Disney’s Newsies!

This joyful show about children rising up, taking control, and speaking out for what’s right is not only based on a cult classic movie released in the early 1990s, but on an actual historical event. As we live through our own unprecedented times, stories like this resonate even more strongly. Having a program like the Youth Performance Company (YPCo) allows a safe space for these young artists to learn, grow, and express themselves.

The YPCo program highlights the talent and passion of the next generation of theatre makers.

Supported with an amazing creative team and Neptune’s incredible builders and makers. It allows emerging talent to learn more about theatre and working artists and artisans a chance to mentor and share their passion. These programs are beyond special; they are transformative for all involved. We are endlessly proud of the work our Theatre School does with the community. If you would like to support the work Neptune does in education, mentorship and building community, please visit our website to learn more about donating.
