DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
I became Neptune’s Artistic Director over eight years ago and it became apparent straight away that there was one frontrunner show that Nova Scotian’s wanted to see on Neptune’s Fountain Hall stage. For years, every weekly grocery store visit was punctuated by patrons coming over to chat. The conversation happened many times and here’s usually how it went:
Scene: Atlantic Superstore - Morning
Jeremy pushes the grocery cart in the frozen food aisle, searching for that specific Pizza his sons like. A tap on his shoulder. He turns to see a lady looking up at him.
Lady: Hello. Are you that Neptune guy?
Jeremy: Yes, hello. Yes, I’m Jeremy. I work at Neptune.
Lady: Oh, good. Love the shows you people do. Love it.
Jeremy: Oh, thank you. That’s lovely to hear.
Lady: However...
Jeremy: Oh!
Lady: I was thinking, you know what you should do?
Jeremy: (Knowing what’s coming but hiding it) Oh, what’s that?
Lady: (With great wisdom) You should do ‘Come From Away.’
Jeremy: Oh! Wow! What a great idea. I never thought of that.
Lady: Well, there you go.
Jeremy: I’ll look into it. What a cool idea.
The Lady moves on, proudly. Jeremy stands for a second making a note to call AGAIN about getting those damned elusive rights.
End Scene.
I am pretty sure that I was the subject of a number of restraining orders. The poor people associated with the show (Sankoff & Hein, the creators, Michael Rubinoff, the originating producer, the folks at Musical Theatre International and the producers at JunkYard Dog Productions, who control the rights) all received pitch after pitch, email and phone calls galore over years.
Three years ago we were on the verge of striking a deal to get the show on our stage and suddenly a US-based touring company announced they were bringing Come From Away to the Scotiabank Centre, killing months of discussion. We paused and waited to get the performance rights and, finally, here we are.
To be able to stage this show, with a 90% Atlantic Canadian cast, building our own concept and bringing this amazing show to life, has been a complete dream come true. To get to create a new production of CFA in the 25th anniversary year of the events of September 11th, 2001, makes this experience even more special to us all.
GANDER LEGION
When the planes hit the Twin Towers in New York and airspace was emptied in hours, I was working here at Neptune, in the marketing department and we were about to preview The musical Gypsy that night. We all held our breath and watched in complete shock as events unfolded, watched by the world. I think if you had told me that twenty five years later we would be producing a musical that springs from the stories of that day, I would have likely not believed that anyone would create such a show.
Come From Away has become a global phenomenon, taking the stories of the inhabitants of a Newfoundland community and how they opened their homes, their lives, their hearts and their arms to displaced travelers - 7000 of them! This show is an amazingly emotional, yet completely upbeat, telling of their stories.
A few years ago I visited Gander, NL, for a few days and saw their own amazing production of CFA, in the town.
I visited the locations in the show, met the real people, spent an evening in the Legion and even saw the real Oz Screech people in! The heart and love this community has was on full display and made the theatre production hit even deeper.
We are honoured to join the long list of theatres telling this story. I am thrilled that our audiences have embraced the show so that we had to extend our run on day one of rehearsals! If you are moved and inspired to share your experiences at the theatre today with friends and neighbours, please do.
Our next season of theatre at Neptune is ready to hit the stage. We start with the musical RENT as soon as CFA closes and we don’t stop until Spring 2027, when we open the world’s most popular show: Les Miserablés Exciting times and I am so grateful for your support.
See you at the theatre.
Jeremy Webb Artistic Director, Neptune Theatre Director,
Come From Away
THE REAL OZ SCREECHING PEOPLE IN
THE GANDER AIPORT
Welcome to Come From Away and to the final production of Neptune Theatre’s 2025/2026 season.
There is something fitting about closing the season with this show. Come From Away is a story about what happens when strangers show up for one another. In many ways, that is what Neptune is too.
This community has shown up for Neptune in ways that matter. The artists, staff, volunteers, and donors who make this work possible do so because they believe live theatre is worth sustaining. I believe that too.
If this season has meant something to you, I hope you will subscribe to 2026/2027. Not simply as a transaction, but as a commitment to keeping this place alive.
Thank you for being here. Enjoy the performance.
Scott McGaw Board Chair, Neptune Theatre Foundation
Welcome to Neptune Theatre’s final production of the 2025–2026 season. Come From Away reminds us that even in the most uncertain times, generosity and compassion can rise to meet fear and grief, lighting the way forward with extraordinary acts of everyday kindness.
Here in Halifax, the events of September 11, 2001 are not distant history. Our region played a vital role in welcoming thousands of stranded travellers, and our communities opened their doors in a time of profound need.
This musical has touched audiences around the world because it tells a simple and powerful truth: when given the opportunity, people choose kindness.
In a time when many of us feel the weight of uncertainty, Come From Away offers something deeply needed, a reminder that goodness endures, that strangers can become neighbours, and that hope can take root in the most unexpected places.
I hope you leave feeling inspired, uplifted, and reminded of the remarkable power of arts and culture. Your support helps ensure that stages like this remain a place where our stories can be shared for generations to come.
Thank you for joining us for Come From Away
