Neptune Theatre has been a cornerstone of Atlantic Canada’s cultural landscape for more than 60 years, delivering high-quality theatrical productions, fostering artistic talent, and engaging audiences. A Bold New Act, Neptune Theatre’s 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, provides a forward-looking roadmap that reinforces its role as a leader in professional theatre in the region. This plan is guided by Neptune’s mission and vision, and structured around four strategic pillars, with an overarching goal of growing Neptune’s role as a vibrant cultural leader in Halifax and beyond. This plan also considers how Neptune can maintain and strengthen its commitment to inclusion, artistic excellence, and organizational sustainability.
While this strategic plan acknowledges its place within the continuum of Neptune’s history, its focus is on the future rather than the past. It aims to chart a path through the evolving post-pandemic theatre landscape — recognizing the lasting changes in audience behaviour and industry economics — without dwelling on the residue of the pandemic’s most disruptive operational impacts.
This document aims to equip Neptune with a forward-looking roadmap toward organizational sustainability, grounded in the fiscal and operational realities with which it will contend over the three-year life of the Plan.

Neptune delivers artistic excellence while fostering creativity, innovation, and diverse voices.
Neptune Theatre aims to be a leader in artistic excellence and the development of new talent and works. This pillar builds on Neptune’s strengths in producing diverse programming that balances popular favourites, bold new works, timeless classics, and local stories, as well as its role in nurturing talent through the Theatre School. It reflects the theatre’s ambition to amplify diverse voices and artistic visions while also driving innovation — whether through bold artistic choices, creative partnerships, or talent-development initiatives. Neptune is committed to embedding equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) principles into programming by showcasing diverse stories and perspectives that reflect the communities it serves.
KEY OBJECTIVES:
• Stage high-quality, balanced programming
• Support emerging and underrepresented artists (Chrysalis Project, Theatre School, Julie Martell Scholarship)
• Develop career pathways through mentorship, outreach, and partnerships (Prismatic, schools, IATSE)
• Co-produce and tour nationally/internationally

Neptune ensures financial stability while positioning itself for growth through innovative strategies and operational efficiency.
This pillar focuses on Neptune Theatre’s ability to achieve financial stability while positioning itself for sustainable growth through new strategies and operational efficiency. It emphasizes the importance of balancing revenue generation and expense management with advancing ambitions related to artistic excellence and community impact. Neptune will prioritize debt reduction while enhancing existing revenue streams, such as ticket sales, subscriptions, donations, sponsorships, and Theatre School registrations.
Simultaneously, the organization will explore innovative financial models to support future development and long-term resilience. A strong financial foundation is essential to the success of all other pillars, providing the resources needed to deliver high-quality programming, foster meaningful community connections, and maintain a supportive, inclusive organizational culture. By keeping financial sustainability at the forefront (including careful budgeting and robust financial reporting), Neptune can continue to invest in bold artistic ventures, expand its reach, and remain a vibrant cultural hub for future generations.
KEY OBJECTIVES:
• Improve sales, subscriptions, and pricing models
• Reduce reliance on traditional funding by growing earned income (rentals, expanded Theatre School, co-productions)
• Grow donor and sponsorship revenue through better segmentation, endowment campaigns, and digital tools

Neptune builds meaningful relationships, broadens its reach, and deepens engagement with diverse audiences and partners.
This pillar reflects Neptune’s dual commitment to expanding its visibility and deepening engagement with all segments of its community. We recognize that “community” means different things to different people — and that its meaning may continue to evolve at Neptune Theatre. For the purpose of this plan, community refers to Neptune’s diverse audiences, partners, and the broader Halifax and Atlantic Canadian communities. Neptune seeks to strengthen partnerships, address barriers to access, and develop data-informed strategies for audience engagement and growth. By listening and responding to community needs, Neptune aims to make theatre more accessible, welcoming, and visible throughout the region — ultimately broadening its reach and cultivating new audiences along the way.
KEY OBJECTIVES:
• Formalize and grow community partnerships (Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, Discover Halifax, Africville Museum)
• Improve public awareness of Neptune’s full offerings (new website, influencer engagement, artistic development visibility)
• Activate existing audiences as ambassadors through referral programs and volunteer engagement

Neptune creates an inclusive, supportive workplace and ensures it has the systems and structures to support its people and achieve its goals.
Neptune Theatre’s internal capacity and organizational culture are critical to its success. This pillar emphasizes the importance of building a healthy, inclusive work environment while ensuring the theatre has the systems and structures to support its people and its strategic aims. It reflects Neptune’s commitment to professional growth, interdepartmental collaboration, and staff well-being. Through training and development, clear governance practices, and improved internal communications, Neptune will foster a positive and productive workplace that empowers everyone to contribute meaningfully.
