In other words, POGOs were despicable enterprises allowed by the Duterte regime to operate in the Philippines as part of his pivot towards China. The former president was not aware that the People’s Republic of China itself wanted nothing to do with POGO-type operations. Such were banned outright in China, so the operators moved their operations to the Philippines in the belief that the administration then would allow them to operate undisturbed.
Even when it became clear that they were little more than criminal enterprises masked as legitimate online businesses, the Duterte administration did nothing.

The blight called POGOs must go
Last week, a POGO was raided by local authorities who discovered more than 40 Chinese were virtual slaves there. It turned out that they had been brought into the country without proper documents, making them illegal aliens. They had been brought in under false pretense and were not allowed to resign or even transfer to other POGOs.

of the worst things that the now-departed Duterte administration did was to welcome with open arms the questionable business known as POGOs, short for Philippine Overseas Gaming Operations.

As one Cabinet secretary said, the social cost of allowing POGOs to continue operating in the Philippines is too high.
However, it became clear soon enough that the POGOs were doing more harm than good. They began to operate almost in complete disregard for Philippine laws. They did not pay the proper taxes, and some became magnets for such lurid activities as prostitution and loan sharking.
Worst of all, the POGOs did not provide employment opportunities for Filipinos, except for a tiny handful of token locals doing menial labor. And the Chinese workers also became pests in the areas where they resided, treating their Filipino neighbors as second class citizens.

This league hit a new low this week when it openly tried to block Filipino players from playing in the other pro basketball leagues that have sprouted all over the region.

A small number of today’s young stars have been recruited in the pro leagues of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Australia even.
They receive such huge salaries that even collegiate players dream of playing for Asian teams, bypassing the PBA.
This is only a slight exaggeration. Collegiate players who submit their names to the annual recruitment end up as some kind of property of the teams that recruit them. Even if they are signed up but barely used, or not used at all, there is little they can do.

This once-great pro league lost much of its credibility after two business titans owned not one, not two, but three teams each. This guaranteed that the owners – Manny V. Pangilinan and Ramon Ang of the MVP Group and the San Miguel group of companies, respectively – would get to celebrate championships on a regular basis.
Yes, my mother Elena Sampayan Gabot Madlaing died peacefully in her sleep last Tuesday, August 30, 2022, 3:30 pm at the age of 103 and seven months. My mother was the second to the youngest child of my late grandfather Candido Gabot and my late grandmother Cecilia Mabini Sampayan Gabot who died at the age of about 115. Before her death, my mother outlived all her siblings namely: Segunda Gabot Asuncion, Sebastian Gabot, Claudia Gabot Dimoloy and Silvino Gabot (all deceased).
When the EDSA demonstrators against Marcos were gaining ground, I called Former Senator Leonardo B. Perez, a close friend of Marcos, and my fraternity brother in the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity. I told him that the Consul General in San Francisco became a “balimbing” (multi sided fruit or “turncoat”) and had joined Cory.
As for Marcos Jr., how does he feel about the kidnappers? People say that by coming to America to address the United Nations General Assembly and by meeting with President Biden (if it happens), he has forgiven the kidnappers. Coming to America does not show forgiveness. Marcos Jr. already came to Hawaii after he had returned to the Philippines. I introduced him when he spoke before the Filipino community. While in Hawaii, he was asked to appear before a U.S. District Judge. We were barred from entering the courtroom.Peoplesay that Marcos Jr. is a forgiving person citing his appointment of 98-year old Juan Ponce Enrile as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel. According to observers, if not for the Enrile “coup d’etat” there would have been no kidnapping.
Remembering My Mother Elena Sampayan Gabot Madlaing
I visited Marcos at his temporary residence on Kalanianaole Highway in Honolulu after he was released from Hickam Air Force ase e pressed m sorro for the pain he must e su ering after the way he was treated. He replied: “You don’t have to be sorry, you had nothing to do with it. There will be retribution.”
Like a good many Filipinos, I enjoy watching basketball, be it the NBA, UAAP or NCAA.Notice something missing?
To this day, it is their teams that almost always vie for the two or three championships every year. All other teams are little more than fodder for the MVP and SMC teams to toy with.
This is wrong, of course. And the players know it. They realize that they are being treated like so much chattel. Or even cattle. Actually they know that they are little more than property of the teams that recruited them, who can be bought and sold – traded is the word the league uses – without their approval.
While driving back home to San Francisco from Sacramento, I received a call from my sister Magdalena M. Sison (when we were still in Vallejo, California) who informed me that my mother just died peacefully in her sleep about 3:30 pm. I told my sister that my wife, Atsi Trinidad Jimenez Tuliao, Atsi Elisa Subido Jimenez and I were scheduled to visit my mother on Thursday, September 1. 2022. Instead of driving home to San Francisco, we proceeded directly to the home of my sister Josie M. Lewis in Bethel Island where my mother was taken cared by my sisters Josie M. Lewis and Luzviminda G. Madlaing.

After that second generation of stars, the ones that followed did not have the excitement factor, maybe because their teams did not have the character of Crispa, Toyota, Ginebra, or Purefoods. Of the four, only Ginebra is still around and while still popular, cannot compare to the original squad that carried the same name.
The one exception was the Alaska Milk franchise, but the owners finall gave up tr ing to contend for titles ecause the opponents had somehow found ways to recruit the best players, sometimes through a series of questionable trades.
This is not to say that the quality of today’s players does not compare to the stars of the PBA’s golden age. But for some inexplicable reason, none of them excite the fans the way the stars of old did.Yes, I’m referring to the Jaworskis, the Fernandezes, the Cos, the Adornados, and the Arnaizes did in the early years followed by the next generation like the Lastimosas, the Patrimonios, the Ildefonsos, and the Parases.
Imelda Marcos met with the Soviet Ambassador to the Philippines and raised a toast to Soviet-Philippine friendship on Soviet National Day after returning from a trip to the Soviet Union, wrote Seth Mydans in the New York Times, November 8, 1985. Imelda announced that ties between the two nations have entered ‘’a new era of friendship and mutual cooperation.” Mydans said that political commentators had pointed out that Imelda’s trip was made to play the “Soviet card” against the Americans.

As United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth s od is eing laid to rest the Russia-Ukraine war is entering its 7th month of hostilities contrary to initial claim of Russia to end it in a month’s time. Is it coming to an end? As I See It, I don’t think so! Even with the renewed vigor being displayed by Ukraine forces pushing the Russian soldiers backward, Russia is not conceding and I think they are trying to regroup. Besides, a superpower like Russia won’t easily give up to a small fry like Ukraine, although technically it’s already Russia vs the rest of the world… indirectly.
In recent weeks, it has been determined that the country has now or is about to have serious shortages of salt, garlic, and white onions.
The NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, said Ukraine’s counterattack against Russian troops had been very e ective ut arned nations should prepare for the long haul as this did not signal the beginning of the end of the war. He said: “We need to understand that this is not the beginning of the end of the war, we need to be prepared for the long haul.” Indeed, it’s not ending as we used to know.
A lot of world leaders are eager to end the war and for Russia to face the international court. The European Union chief, Ursula von der Leyen, said she wanted the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to face the international criminal court over war crimes in Ukraine. “That Putin must lose this war and must face up to his actions, that is important to me,” she told the TV channel of the German news outlet Bild on Thursday. Indeed, this is a toll order for the lady European Union chief.

Seniors Financial Advisor thinks that one explanation for Americans’ willingness to take on more debt could be the relative improvement of the economy over the past year, when the workforce added 2.2 million jobs over the course of the year. A: I have always been an advocate of protecting your information. One of these information is your Social Security Number. Companies who have your information go through extreme measures and millions of dollars to protect your personal information from getting stolen by thieves. And this is for the same reason I have been an advocate of not using calls centers. Call centers in Asia are the most notorious for information getting into the wrong hands. Let me give you an example. I was in the Philippines in the last two months for business. I used my credit card while I was there. One month later, my credit card was being used by someone in Bangladesh. I have used my credit cards in the US and Canada and not once has any of them been compromised. One trip to Manila and in a month, the credit card company calls me to inform me that my credit card number has been stolen. Most likely one of the employees of one of the places I used my credit card has a relative who is working in Bangladesh and decided to use my credit card number to make unauthorized purchases. So watch out who you give your Social Security Number to.

Ating lesson, Ang information niyo ingatan lag isa mga kawatan.

Q: How can my tax refund be stolen if my Social Security Number gets compromised?

With regards to taxes, when a thief gets a hold of your information and Social Securit um er the can fill out ta forms under our name and as the refund to e sent to an address where they can get a hold of the refund together with a bunch of other victim’s refunds. The headache that this will bring you is beyond painful. You will have to contact the IRS and do some explaining when they send you a letter stating that ou have alread filed our ta es hen ou file our real ta es he then have to send ou an affidavit stating that our identit has een stolen fter ou send out the affidavit ou have to ait a out da s or a out half of the ear for our refund because they now have to go through an investigation process. This is only half the battle. Now you have to check your credit to see if new credit cards have been opened under our name his here is a ne and di erent pro lem from our ta refund and we will cover this next.

To put things in their proper perspective, our mouth has a out illion germs of di erent strains and bacteria reproduce every 5 hours. One day without brushing increases the germs to 100 billion. The mouth has more germs than our rectum. Disgusting but true. A public toilet seat only has about 1,200 to 3000 bacteria per square inch, actually less than germs in our mouth. You don’t have to run in fear to brush your teeth after reading this, but do “conscious brushing” times a day, after each and every meal. And visit the dentist twice a

The use of cannabis in the United States and around the world is massively increasing, thanks to our legislators who thought people needed another recreational drug besides alcohol, etc. Do we really need more illegal drugs and more su ering and deaths olitical correctness gets votes, so they enact laws to please their constituents never mind the detrimental e ects to society.Studies now show at the Washington University in St. Louis found that children exposed to cannabis while in the womb “show increased symptoms of psychopathology such as depression and anxiety in early adolescence…and elevated psychopathology symptoms during adolescence can make a young person more vulnerable to developing psychiatric illness and substance misuse.”
In the United States, in a 12-month period ending in January 2022, there were 107,375 people who died from drug overdosage and drug poisoning, according to the CDC. About 67 percent of the deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl, many of them in multiple color gummies/tablets to attract children. More than 200,000 Americans have perished from fentanyl overdose since 2015, since this dangerous substance is 100 times stronger than morphine, most victims’ ages ranged from 18-45, more than any other causes of deaths in 2020, greater than from suicide, car accidents and COVID-19. The open southern border is a major factor for entry of these killer drugs and other killers. Keeping the border open is insanity.
