The woman with a plan

IPLOCA is proud to support the Women in Pipe (WIP) Association. Its founder, Léna Muscillo, says the pipeline sector must do more to attract women and young people.

Léna Muscillo is the founder and CEO of LogIC SAS, a small IPLOCA member based in France specialising in traceability services. She enjoys being on the road, spending the better part of the year travelling and working on job sites. In addition to balancing a busy work schedule and caring for her family, she is also passionate about raising awareness of the pipeline industry. She was recently invited to meet with

50 high school students aged 16 in France. After speaking to them about the pipeline industry she asked who would be interested in working in the sector. The response was unequivocal, only two young men raised their hands. There is a long way to go, she concedes.

“Today, with growing pressure on human resources, workforce availability has become a key issue in the construction, operation, and maintenance of pressurized networks. Yet young people are unaware of these professions and the opportunities within the industry,” she explains.

“Women in Pipe (WIP) is an association committed to promoting careers in the pressurized pipeline sector and highlighting the essential role that women can play within it. In an industry often perceived as technical, maledominated, and lacking appeal, WIP works to challenge these perceptions and open the door to anyone—especially women—interested in contributing to this vital field.”

WIP is taking concrete action to achieve its goals through a range of initiatives. These include developing tailored vocational training programs, organising knowledgesharing events, conducting awareness sessions in schools, and managing a mentorship programme to support professional development.

The association is supported by Storengy (a subsidiary of ENGIE), LogIC and IPLOCA. Feel free to contact Léna if you are interested in the activities of the association: lena.muscillo@womeninpipe.com

Salzgitter Group delivers pipes to Angola for water supply

Munich-based CNT Bau, a subsidiary of the Casais Group, one of Portugal's largest construction companies, has signed a significant agreement with Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH (SMID) and Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH (MGR) for the delivery of spiral-welded largediameter pipes and pipe fittings for the ambitious Quilonga Grande water supply system in the southwest African country of Angola. These pipes will play a decisive role in the drinking water supply redesign so urgently required for the capital city of Luanda. Luanda (around 10 million inhabitants), with its three outdated water supply systems, is currently suffering, day in day out, from a water deficit of around 1.2 million cbm. In many cases, drinking water still has to be transported via tank trucks. The Quilonga Grande project will therefore pave the way for a sustainable and future-oriented drinking water supply in the growing capital city. As Gunnar Groebler, Chief Executive Officer of Salzgitter AG, states: “This is a groundbreaking project to be handled jointly by member companies of the Salzgitter Group. It marks a milestone in terms of the infrastructure and quality of life for people in Angola. Steel pipes therefore play a major role in supplying people with the precious commodity that is water.” The project secures capacity utilization for Mannesmann Grossrohr through to mid-2026, while creating new jobs in

Angola. Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH and Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH are responsible for manufacturing the pipes in Salzgitter and Hamm, which will demand a wide range of manufacturing capabilities from both companies. Pipes in diameters of 508 mm right up to 1,626 mm are required for the various sections of the around 105 km long system. Techint achieves milestone in high-altitude water pipeline project in Chile

Techint Engineering & Construction has completed a water pumping system that now supplies desalinated water to the Collahuasi mine in northern Chile. In 10 months, the company built a water conveyance system connecting an adjacent mine's facilities to the Collahuasi mine, supplying it with desalinated water in the Tarapacá Region. The project, known as Interconexión, achieved a key milestone in May 2025, when the water began flowing. This system plays a key role in supporting more sustainable mining practices by reducing the use of freshwater in high-altitude operations. The scope included a 15.2 km (9.4-mile) pipeline, a pumping station with three pumps, a storage pool, a second station with two pumps, an outlet station with two additional pumps, and a loading bay. The infrastructure was built at an altitude of over 4,500 metres above sea level, under extreme climatic and logistical conditions. At peak construction, more than 1,400 workers were mobilized. The project recorded over 1.5 million workhours with no lost-time incidents, and more than one million kilometres (621,000 miles) travelled with no road accidents. Final technical and administrative closure activities are currently underway.

Tesmec empowers major pipeline project in Argentina

Tesmec is proud to support a major pipeline project in Río Negro, Argentina. Two powerful Tesmec 1675EVO chainsaw trenchers are at work constructing a 437-kilometre, 30-inch pipeline that will boost oil transport within the region. The 1675EVO trencher, weighing 150 metric tons and driven by a 760 HP engine, is purpose-built for different diameter pipelines in the toughest rock conditions. With three boom configurations, it can achieve trenches up to 732 cm (24’) deep and 183 cm (72”) wide, ideal for the challenging terrain along the route. On this ambitious project, the 1675EVO units are contributing to progress across challenging terrain and within demanding project

schedules ensuring precision and reliability. Their performance characteristics are particularly suited to the geological conditions encountered along the route. This deployment highlights Tesmec’s commitment to driving progress in pipeline infrastructure across South America and demonstrates how its trenching solutions deliver performance in all soil conditions around the world.

Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi targets midstream construction

Electrically conductive concrete is a transformative innovation, significantly enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability – critical for pipeline and offshore infrastructure. Dr. Nancy Soliman’s Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure (AMSI) Laboratory at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi is actively leading focused research and development efforts in conductive concrete. At AMSI Lab, multifunctional conductive materials with enhanced strength have been developed by strategically incorporating conductive fillers such as nano-carbon black (nCB) and steel fibers into cement-based matrices. This approach creates a robust multiscale conductive volumetric wiring network at low filler dosage (~1.5% nCB combined with 1% steel fibers), effectively optimizing high electrical conductivity and mechanical performance simultaneously. This innovative conductive concrete presents promising practical applications tailored specifically to the pipeline and offshore industries. It enables Joule-effect self-heating for pavements and pipeline encasements, mitigating ice formation and reducing maintenance costs in cold climates. It also facilitates real-time structural health monitoring, rapidly identifying weaknesses in pipeline supports or

offshore structures, significantly improving safety and reliability. Additionally, it provides effective cathodic protection against corrosion, extending infrastructure lifespan. Potential applications also include electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and energy harvesting –positioning AMSI Lab to collaborate with industry partners to tackle real-world infrastructure challenges.

UAB DS1 finishes Tuzla-Podisor Pipeline in Romania ahead of schedule

In April 2025, DS1 successfully completed its work on a key section of the 308 km Transgaz Tuzla–Podișor pipeline project in Romania. The completed section covers 73 km and includes 40" and 48" diameter gas lines - an essential addition to Romania’s energy system and cross-border infrastructure. Working under main contractor Kalyon, DS1 performed over 6,000 welds using both automatic and manual methods. With three CRC-Evans automatic welding cabins on the 40" line, the team reached up to 75 welds per day, consistently meeting high safety and quality standards. The scope also included pipe bending, field joint coating, and lowering-in across varied and sometimes challenging terrain. DS1’s team worked through extreme conditions - from -25°C in winter to +45°C in summer - demonstrating adaptability and resilience throughout the project. Mobilizing in January 2024, DS1 finished the full scope two months ahead of the planned June 2025 deadline. Alongside its own works, DS1 also provided critical support to neighbouring Lots, helping them remain on schedule. This early and successful delivery highlights DS1’s capabilities in large-scale pipeline construction - driven by skilled teams, modern technology, and effective project execution across Europe.

Vacuworx RC 20 lifter used on pipeline project in Arkansas

The Vacuworx RC 20 lifter, paired with a Komatsu excavator, is being used on a pipeline project in Northwest Arkansas.

The job involves installing 54" diameter steel pipe in lengths ranging from 16 to 50 feet, with terrain made especially difficult by the Ozark Mountains. The combination of steep grades and tight access has made traditional lifting methods more difficult—but the Vacuworx RC 20 has helped streamline pipe handling across the site. By reducing the need for slings and manual rigging, crews have been able to work more efficiently and maintain safer operating distances. The vacuum lifter’s ability to securely handle each joint has proven essential in keeping up with the demands of the project.

2024 HSE Statistics Report

IPLOCA is dedicated to fostering health and safety across all areas of its influence, embracing the belief that every accident is preventable.

This HSE Statistics Report consolidates the health, safety, and environmental data submitted by members for 2024, with almost all Regular Members (95%) contributing their HSE Statistics Forms. We encourage you to review the report thoroughly and take informed, proactive steps for the future.

Fatalities

Despite continued efforts, the 2025 target of zero fatalities

has not been reached, with three fatal incidents reported for the year 2024. The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) increased to over 2, but still remains low compared to the historical average of 4.5.

HSE Shared Experiences Platform

Companies need to pay more attention to near-miss reporting and health & safety training. Both areas missed the 2025 targets, with health & safety training in particular showing a shortfall of 66% in 2024. The Committee encourages members to focus on these areas, alongside implementing Behavioural Safety Programmes. Members are also encouraged to strengthen their training efforts and to actively share best practices and case studies through the IPLOCA Shared Experiences Platform: www.iploca.com/hseplatform

Environmental Incidents

Environmental incident frequency decreased in 2024, now 14% below the historical average, with most incidents being minor and causing minimal impact on air, water, and soil. While the Health & Safety Training Frequency Rate rebounded from last year, it still falls short of the target. Ongoing leadership commitment is crucial for further progress

Collaborative Efforts to Minimize Risks

The Committee aims to help companies adopt best practices by fostering collaboration, offering training, and providing networking opportunities to minimize risks in the design, construction, operation, and decommissioning of pipeline projects.

Sustainability What is CSRD?

The CSRD, or Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, is a piece of European legislation which came into force in 2023 and seeks to improve transparency for investors, consumers and other stakeholders relating to the financial, environmental and social impacts of businesses operating in the EU.

This is part of the European Green Deal, launched in 2020, which is seeking to transform Europe’s economy into a sustainable and resource-efficient one. Its key goals include achieving climate neutrality by 2050, having more sustainable value chains (environmentally and socially) and restoring, protecting and enhancing the EU’s natural resources.

Building on the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), CSRD mandates companies to disclose their material impacts on the environment and society, bringing sustainability reporting up to the same level as financial reporting by:

- Introducing mandatory reporting standards,

- Requiring a climate transition plan from all ‘in scope’ companies.

- Requiring a double materiality approach – that is, an understanding of both the impacts of the company on people and the environment, as well as how those sustainability issues may represent business risk.

- Introducing enforcement penalties for non-compliance.

- Requiring third party assurance of reporting.

Relevant organisations that do business within the EU will have to comply through phased implementation due over the next approximately five years. Listed enterprises will be the first to have to comply, followed by “large enterprises” (which have two of: over 250 employees; revenues of over EUR 40 million; assets over EUR 20 million) and then listed SMEs.

The CSRD may still impact companies headquartered outside of the EU, if they have significant business operations in Europe. Specifically, if a company’s European subsidiary meets the thresholds above, it must comply with the CSRD’s reporting requirements. Even without an EU subsidiary, a company may still be subject to the CSRD if it generates over EUR 150 million in EU revenue for two consecutive years and meets other criteria such as having a physical presence in the EU or significant local revenue. The dates for compliance with CSRD have been subject to the ‘stop the clock’ proposals of the EU Omnibus Proposals aimed at simplifying sustainability reporting and hence the precise dates for compliance for different types of business is currently not known.

The wide scope (Figure 1 above) of the disclosures has been a concern for many companies and just gathering the data to report has been seen as an onerous task. The assessment also includes evaluating risks, opportunities and their interactions with a company’s strategy, value chain and business model.

The Omnibus proposals, which will be voted on later in the year, will likely not reduce the scope of issues that need to be addressed in CSRD. Rather, it will be the guidance on how to go about it that is simplified. Through effective scoping and prioritising only significant issues raised through a double materiality assessment, companies can ensure that their sustainability reporting focuses on the key issues, aligning with stakeholder expectations and regulatory guidelines.

For more information on CSRD, including an update on the Omnibus proposals and guidance on how your company can get ahead, you should attend the IPLOCA HSE & CSR Workshop “Driving Cultural Change: CSRD reporting evolution and safety culture in the pipeline industry” on 28 October in Budapest. IPLOCA Scholarships

We are pleased to announce the selection of twelve outstanding recipients of the 2025 IPLOCA Scholarships. Each of these exceptional individuals is a child or grandchild of an employee of an IPLOCA member.

This year, we received an impressive 128 applications from highly qualified candidates, making the selection process especially competitive. The Scholarship Committee, comprised of Board members including Committee Chair Saji Khoury, Michael Fakhoury, Gerben Wansink, and Kent Wilfur, undertook the challenging task of reviewing each application.

To ensure fairness and reduce grader bias, z-score normalization was applied during the evaluation of application scores. Reflecting IPLOCA’s international membership and commitment to diversity, the original plan was to award scholarships to the top scorers in each of our eight regions, along with four additional scholarships to the highest overall scorers. Sustainability Solar Energy at Nesma & Partners: Practical Shifts with Real Payoffs

At Nesma & Partners, our sustainability framework is seamlessly integrated into how we operate. Guided by the precision that defines our engineering excellence, we pursue environmental initiatives that deliver immediate performance benefits while building long-term resilience. When innovation aligns with measurable impact, we move forward with confidence.

Strategic Integration of Solar Energy

Our transition to solar energy was driven by operational needs, not abstract ambition. Remote project sites often relied on diesel generators, introducing high fuel costs, intensive maintenance demands, and logistical complexities. These challenges called for a smarter, more sustainable approach. Solar power provided a scalable, data-driven solution. By reducing diesel dependence, we improved energy reliability, cut emissions, and simplified site logistics. Our teams conducted rigorous assessments of feasibility, energy demand, and lifecycle value, ensuring each system was technically sound and economically viable.

From Pilot Project to Programmatic Deployment

The transition began at the Nesma & Partners Fabrication Workshop, where we implemented a hybrid solar-diesel system. The results were immediate: over 727,000 kilowatthours of clean energy generated annually, meeting nearly 46% of the facility’s energy needs. This transition has eliminated the use of 242,388 litres of diesel each year, substantially reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Beyond minimizing our carbon footprint, it also mitigates the environmental risks tied to diesel storage and usage, such as fuel spillage and ground contamination. The system delivers an annual cost saving of SAR 278,746 (EUR 64,500) and a 320% return

on investment over 25 years. Environmentally, the system prevents the release of over 655,000 kilograms of CO₂, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 30,000 mature trees. Additionally, reduced diesel usage curbs the emission of pollutants such as particulate matter, NOx, and SOx, improving local air quality. Cleaner air supports healthier living conditions, reducing risks of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses in nearby communities. Encouraged by these results, we extended solar deployment to off-grid worker camps, site offices, and temporary support stations, each tailored to site-specific energy loads and designed for modular scalability.

Flagship Solar Integration at NEOM

Our solar strategy is exemplified at NEOM’s 5K and 10K Construction Villages, where renewable energy was embedded from the outset. These sites are not temporary setups, they are enduring operational hubs supporting one of the Kingdom’s most transformative developments.

At the 5K Village, a 2.5 MW solar system generates 5 GWh of clean electricity each year, accounting for 25% of its energy demand. In the 10K Village, a 4.5 MW system produces 8 GWh annually, fulfilling the same proportion of its energy needs. Both systems are seamlessly integrated into the villages’ infrastructure, supporting ongoing operations. These solar systems use high-efficiency panels and smart inverters to deliver reliable energy, even under varying environmental conditions. Their performance is monitored in real time through a centralized system that tracks energy output, detects issues early, and enables timely maintenance. The panels are mounted on durable, corrosion-resistant structures, engineered to perform reliably in the Kingdom’s climatic conditions.

Solar adoption enhances energy reliability by mitigating the risks of diesel supply chain interruptions. This energy independence bolsters community resilience and supports both industrial and social development, reinforcing NEOM’s mission to build future-ready environments. Both locations are targeting LEED v4 Silver Certification, with sustainability reflected in material sourcing, waste management, and long-term maintenance practices. Their stability underscores a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship.

Supporting National Sustainability Objectives

Our solar initiatives support Vision 2030 and the Saudi Energy Efficiency Program (SEEP) by reducing fossil fuel dependency and diversifying energy sources. Avoiding over 240,000 litres of diesel annually relieves pressure on national fuel reserves and lowers emissions, reinforcing our alignment with the Kingdom’s sustainability agenda. These measurable results are not just environmental milestones, they represent our deep-rooted commitment to delivering high-performance contracting solutions aligned with ethical and national priorities.

Looking ahead, we plan to expand our solar systems in a flexible way that allows us to scale up as operational needs grow. Each system will be designed to supplement the energy demands of the buildings it supports, ensuring

consistent efficiency and performance. We are also selecting suppliers who provide certified, environmentally responsible solar equipment. This ensures compliance with green building standards and aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, strengthening the long-term sustainability of our solar program.

Expanding Our Sustainability Roadmap

Solar energy is just the beginning. Our broader sustainability strategy includes construction waste optimization, efficient water management, low-impact material procurement, and real-time emissions monitoring and reporting. Every initiative undergoes rigorous evaluation to ensure it drives both operational excellence and positive outcomes. This is sustainability built into every phase of project delivery.

Redefining Responsibility in Construction

Construction will always leave a footprint, but at Nesma & Partners, we believe it can be managed intelligently, ethically, and in alignment with national and global expectations. Our solar energy program demonstrates that sustainability enhances performance without compromise. We remain focused on scaling what works, refining what can be improved, and sharing what we learn. For us, sustainability is more than a goal—it is a standard of execution. And as we continue to build the future, we do so with the conviction that real impact is delivered through action, not aspiration.
