MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU

CHOOSING BETWEEN YOUR OFFERS

Once you’ve received all your offers, you will need to reply through UCAS with the following three decisions:

FIRM

This is your first-choice course and university.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

It’s important that you’re happy with both your firm and insurance choices, and that they are in the right order. Your insurance choice is a back-up, not a second choice. If you are successful at your firm choice, your insurance is automatically declined.

INSURANCE

This is your ‘back-up’ choice, just in case you don’t meet the requirements of your firm choice.

WHAT IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND?

You have 14 days after making your choices to change your mind, and you can do this through UCAS Hub directly. If you need advice or guidance relating to this, please contact our Admissions team: applications@plymouth.ac.uk

STUDENT TIPS

DECLINE

You do not want to attend this course or university.

CHECK YOUR OFFER

CONDITIONS

Make sure you choose an offer from a university which meets your personal requirements, is achievable, and that your insurance choice has different conditions than your firm choice. A lot of offers will have additional conditions – i.e. Disclosure and Barring Service check, learning assessment or occupational health check – not just your grades, so make sure you review these too.

Try to visit universities that you’re interested in. It’s important to get a feel for the universities you’re considering making your firm and insurance choices. As well as choosing the right course for you, also consider:

Where do you want to study (think about urban or rural locations)?

What other opportunities and facilities do you need (support, placements, etc)?

Head to the Unibuddy platform and chat to current students.

Explore modules in detail.

Trust your instincts and don’t go to a university just because it’s where your friends or family recommend.

OFFER HOLDER DAYS

Even if you visited us at one of our open days, an offer holder day is a fantastic opportunity to visit us again and ask any last-minute questions before starting in September. Your tailored event is designed to help you make the right decision about your university, and gives a deeper insight into your chosen course. Current students Owain, Myla and Emily share what you can expect from an offer holder day.

WHAT IS AN OFFER HOLDER DAY?

An offer holder day at the University of Plymouth is specifically designed for applicants who have received an offer for their chosen course. These events provide a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper insight into what studying the course will be like. It is a chance to explore all the exciting facilities where the practical aspects of the course are taught, and allows you the chance to meet lecturers and current students, giving you an honest and informative perspective on the course content, student experience, and the supportive learning environment at Plymouth.

FIND OUT MORE AND BOOK YOUR PLACE.

WHAT CAN APPLICANTS EXPECT FROM THE DAY?

Mainly, students can expect to get involved with tasks and discussions to give them a feel for what the course is like, as well as the chance to chat to lecturers and student ambassadors about the course, and student life more widely. The main aim of these days is to give the offer holder a chance to ‘test out’ the course, ask questions, and see if the course is a good match for them. I would definitely recommend thinking about what you would like to find out and come prepared with questions. There are also opportunities to explore the city, campus and everything that is offered to a university student. Experiencing an offer holder day can really help you make a more informed decision about your studies and feel more confident about joining the course. – Emily

YOUR OFFER HOLDER DAY

See

From my own experience—both as someone who attended an offer holder day and who now works at them—students can expect a really welcoming and informative day. After attending an offer holder day, I had a much clearer picture of what studying child health nursing at Plymouth would look like, and I got a real sense of the supportive and inclusive learning environment. Hearing directly from students, and seeing the facilities, helped me feel more confident in my decision. An offer holder day is a relaxed day where students can get a deeper understanding of what life would be like at Plymouth. The one I attended played a significant role in my decision to study here. – Myla

WHO TO TALK TO ON THE DAY?

ACCOMMODATION

The Accommodation team are on hand to answer any questions about what student life is like in halls, especially for those moving away for the first time. The team talk you through all the different halls available, the price guides, and show you the kind of accommodation you could be moving into in September. You’ll also get to see the Student Village and get an idea of campus life.

– Owain

STUDENT HUB

Student support teams are available to meet you at an offer holder day. At this point, you’ve got an offer with us, so the student support services are there to help you take the next step and be ready to start studying with us. – Owain

TAKE A TOUR

A good way to take it all in is by going on a campus tour. These are led by current students from different courses. This is a great way for you to be able to ask them anything you’re curious about and see all the places where you might spend time when you’re studying here. Student ambassadors are excited to share what they’ve experienced. From the people giving campus tours and accommodation talks to the city tours and course talks, everything is organised to help you make the best decision for you. In a nutshell, offer holder days are great in so many ways, but the atmosphere on campus is by far the best bit! – Owain

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT

Curious about what a typical day at university looks like? Our students, Elena, Sam and Andrea, walk you through an average day as a uni student.

ELENA

Mechanical Engineering student

“My main advice would be to keep all doors open, don’t write anything off, and say ‘yes’ and smile – it will get you far. I know everyone says it, but join societies, even if it is just for nights out! You meet so many people and have so much fun. Good luck!”

SAM

History with Foundation student

“My advice to students coming to Plymouth would be to engage with the city and its community – explore the local area and find places where you can relax and feel like you belong. It’s always nice to be able to retreat to a beach, pub or cafe to clear your head after a busy day.”

ANDREA

Physiotherapy student

“My advice would be to find a good balance. Stay on top of your university work but also make the most out of your time in Plymouth. Get involved in societies! They’re such a great way to meet people and make your university experience more enjoyable and memorable.”

TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY

The first year of university is where you learn not only the content of your degree, but life skills and what it’s like to live independently. These tips are designed to help you make the most of your time as a fresher.

1. Embrace ’the firsts’

“Whether you have moved away from home to come to university or not experienced university life before, you will experience a lot of ‘firsts’. First day of lectures, first day of placement (if applicable to your degree), first study group, first Freshers’ Fair. Firsts can be scary, but one thing I didn’t do enough as a first-year student was embracing ‘the firsts’. You won’t be the only first-year student when you start, and you can bond with others over experiencing things for the first time.”

2.

Make the most of being by the sea!

“Catching the sunset at Hoe Park after lectures or jumping on a quick train to Looe or boat to Cawsand with friends, Plymouth has some of the best coastal views in the UK. It’s an amazing way to unwind and feel like you’re on a mini holiday.”

– Zain, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with Foundation student

4.

Explore your new city

“Step outside of campus and explore what Plymouth has to offer. Try supporting independent businesses around the city and close to campus. Dawsteps sell freshly-made sandwiches and the staff are always friendly and welcoming.”

– Joe, Education student

3.

Join a society

“My biggest top tip is to join a society (or two)! Societies are a fantastic way of meeting friends with similar interests and a great way to fill the time in the evenings and at weekends. I joined the Waterfront Running Society which I instantly found to be super friendly and welcoming of all abilities. I also joined the Stand Up Paddleboarding society!”

– Isabel, Geography student

5.

Put yourself out there

“Before starting university, I was worried that I had forgotten how to make friends, but as soon as you get there you realise there are so many ways to do so, and everyone is in the same boat and just as keen to meet you!. My advice would be to keep all doors open, don’t write anything off, say yes!”

– Emily, Psychology student

6.

Get involved

“Make the most of some incredible opportunities to study outside of the lecture hall. Experiencing field trips abroad has been a highlight of my course, allowing me to apply what I’ve learnt to real world environments.”

– Alfie, Zoology student

7.

Try something new

“Say yes to as much as you can in your first year. I jumped into all kinds of Give It A Go sessions: ice skating, boat trips, treasure hunts, even game development - things I never would have tried otherwise. I met people outside of my usual routine of class and home. These new connections helped me feel more at home. Plus, I could try things without pressure or commitment.”

– Mya, Mechanical Engineering student

9.

Go to Summer Ball

“The Summer Ball is one of my favourite events of the year — when campus transforms, and everyone comes together to celebrate the end of the academic year. With a silent disco, tribute acts, and famous faces (we’ve had Caity Baser and Chase and Status perform!), it’s the perfect way to finish the year. It’s an experience I’ll always remember.”

– Joe, Education student

8.

Become a student ambassador

“Becoming a student ambassador has been one of the best parts of my first year. I’ve met students from across the University, spoken in schools about my journey into medicine, and even helped run campus events. It’s boosted my confidence and given me opportunities I never imagined”

Zain, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with Foundation student

10.

Enjoy every moment

“Your time as a student will fly by! Before you know it, you’ll be a third-year student preparing to go out into the world with your degree. You’ll emerge from this experience with new friends (for life in some cases), a new perspective on life, and a wealth of knowledge and experience behind you. So, enjoy every moment.”

– Amy, Nursing student

THE WRITING CAFE

“As an international student, the Writing Cafe was such a great help! The welcoming space enabled me to speak to trained student writing mentors who helped me explore techniques and strategies to improve. The service helped me to feel a sense of belonging not just to the University but also to the community.”

Ethel, Occupational Therapy graduate

CAREERS SERVICE

“The Careers Service was such a great help to me during my third year. They helped me refine my CV ready for applying for roles after graduating, as well as offering me the opportunity to do mock interviews. Without this, I don’t think I would have been so quick to get a job after finishing my degree.”

Stephanie, Marine Biology graduate

PEER-ASSISTED LEARNING SCHEME (PALS)

PALS was a fantastic resource during my foundation year and first year at Plymouth. Having sessions led by students a year ahead of me was incredibly helpful. They’d already been through the material, so they understood the challenges I was facing. This made it easier to ask questions and get alternative explanations in a comfortable environment.”

Luxi, Mathematics with Finance graduate

STUDENT SERVICES

“The student services at the University were amazing during my studies, from support with my disability, to help securing my placement. The support provided was excellent.”

Finn, Psychology graduate

Connect with other students

We’ll recommend the groups that’ll help you find like-minded people, based on your course and interests.

Personalise your experience

Customise your username and groups – if you’ve made a connection, why not start your own group chat?

Did you know you have an exclusive welcome community now that you’re an offer holder? You don’t have to wait until September to start making lifelong friendships. Chat to other applicants right now on Unibuddy Community.

You can talk to everyone in a big group or join more personalised chats that centre around you and your interests. Some groups include:

• Societies

• Life around campus

• Accommodation

• LGBTQ+

• Welcome week.

Once you’ve started making connections, you can even start your own group chat!

TOP FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK OUR STUDENTS

The other great thing about Unibuddy Community is that you can chat to some of our current students. If you have burning questions, want some advice, or want to hear about their experiences, they’re online for a chat.

1. WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO CHOOSE PLYMOUTH?

2. HOW DID YOU DECIDE BETWEEN PLYMOUTH AND YOUR OTHER UNIVERSITY CHOICES?

3. HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHICH ACCOMMODATION TO CHOOSE?

4. WHAT’S THE SUPPORT LIKE AT PLYMOUTH?

5. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME IN PLYMOUTH?

JESSICA Unibuddy ambassador

“Unibuddy is a great platform that offers genuine conversation between you and students with real-life university experiences. Chatting with current students allows you to explore what life at university is truly like, what aspects you might enjoy, and whether the course is right for you. A huge benefit is learning more about your course and knowing what to expect.”

SPORTS CLUBS AND SOCIETIES TO CHOOSE FROM!

YOUR SU

When you hear “Students’ Union” or “SU,” you might picture a buzzing bar and cheap pints. While we do have an award-winning venue right in the heart of campus, the SU is so much more. At our core, we exist to support you. Whether it’s helping you settle in, finding your community, growing your skills, or navigating challenges, we’re here to help you ensure that your time at university is not only successful, but also fulfilling and memorable.

YOUR VOICE

Every year, you elect students to lead as full-time Presidents in the Sabbatical Officer team. These leaders represent you at the highest levels of the University, championing the changes you want to see and working to enhance your student experience.

As an organisation that is led by you, the students, we work hard to ensure that you have the opportunities available to feel empowered and to make your voice heard. We support more than 500 elected part-time student representatives who listen to and collate your feedback to share with University staff to shape and improve your academic experience.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE

You’re joining a friendly, diverse and passionate group of students. For many of you, this is an entirely new beginning and an opportunity to find your people.

One of the ways you can meet like-minded people is by joining a student group. Each group is led and supported by students for students at a costeffective rate.

By joining a club or society you can…

• Meet people on your course by joining an academic society

• Get outdoors with an adventure club

• Connect with your cultural community and build your home away from home, by joining a faith or culture-based society

• Make a difference to the local community by volunteering or getting involved with fundraising

• Explore Britain’s Ocean City by signing up to a water-based club.

SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE

We have a team of friendly advisers who can offer free, confidential support on a range of topics: no issue is ever too small. Whether you need support for your wellbeing, advice on finances, academic concerns, or something else, please reach out to us and we will support you.

VARSITY

Varsity is our annual sporting competition between Team Plymouth (us!) and Plymouth Marjon University. Almost 300 University of Plymouth students took part in Varsity this year, with many more attending the fixtures to cheer on our teams! From lacrosse to swimming, climbing to basketball, students compete to raise money for charity and to take home the Varsity trophy –which we did, for the fourth year in a row this year.

SUMMER BALL

Our biggest, most anticipated event of the year: Summer Ball! For one night of the year, you walk the red carpet as we take over and transform your campus with multiple stages, amazing artists, food and drink stalls, and more. Just think of it as an exclusive festival right on your doorstep!

EXPLORING PLYMOUTH

Hear from our students about their favourite places to spend their time in and around Plymouth.

“Mount Edgcumbe directly overlooks Plymouth Sound and provides some lovely views on a summer’s day. The easiest way to get to Mount Edgcumbe would be to get the number 34 Citybus to the Cremyll Ferry and take that across to Mount Edgcumbe. The ferry is very affordable and adds to the whole experience as a mini boat trip!”

Jack, Chemistry student

“Plymouth itself is a wonderfully varied city, with plenty of entertainment to suit all tastes! Personally I love the seafront restaurants on the Barbican Marina and surfing spots dotted along the coastline, but there are pubs, theatres, restaurants and water sports to suit even the most eclectic of personalities.”

Kyle, Dentistry student

“Despite being an urban city, Plymouth is surrounded by English countryside. There are so many beaches just a short drive away, and plenty of buses which will take you there. My favourite is Bovisand beach; you can get there easily by catching a ferry from the Barbican. Dartmoor is also very close by, providing plenty of opportunities for a hike in the summer.”

Lily, Zoology student

“Plymouth is so beautiful, it’s very difficult to choose one favourite place, as most places I absolutely love! The top locations for me are the seafront, Sutton Harbour and Devil’s Point because I love going to watch the sunrise by the sea as it’s just so tranquil and such a great start to the day!”

Christina, Biomedical Science student

“The majority of Plymouth’s student accommodation, halls and houses are within a 15-minute walk of the University, which is one of the most convenient things for me. This means that it’s so easy to get to university, to see friends or to get into the city centre too.”

“Plymouth city centre is only a few minutes’ walk away from the University and it has all the shops that you are likely to need. If you are into water sports or generally love being around the ocean, then Plymouth is the place for you, as you look forward to enjoying a summer’s day at the seafront and swim at many of the beautiful beaches nearby.”

Brigitte, Social Work student

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Hands-on experiences prepare you for the workplace, so it’s important to look closely at the details of the courses you have applied to when it comes to making your firm and insurance choices. Explore the modules in more detail, and consider the field trip experiences and placement opportunities. These factors will help you choose the right university for you.

THE LAW CLINIC

The Law Clinic is, in essence, the University’s ‘law firm’ on campus. Coordinated by Law students and supervised by staff, the clinic provides hands-on experience for our students, whereby they give free legal advice and assistance to real clients in the Plymouth community, across a range of legal areas.

“I was particularly interested in Plymouth’s law course as I liked the look of the modules, the opportunities provided by the Law Society and the option to gain experience working in the Law Clinic, providing pro bono legal advice to my local community.”

Jasmine

PLYMOUTH’S COLD CASE UNIT

Students from the School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences can join Plymouth’s Cold Case Unit and apply their investigative and detective skills to real-life cases. This is a student-led group – with experts guiding – that investigates unsolved missing persons investigations. The group’s mission is to uncover new evidence which can be used by the police to solve cases.

GEOGRAPHY

In addition to local field visits associated with specialist modules, residential international fieldwork is an optional part of our degrees. Field courses have included Sweden, Iceland, Western Australia and the USA. Destinations vary from year to year, but the courses all contain a local zero cost field trip option. A

supplementary cost may apply to some destinations.

“The location of Plymouth within the South West and the associated coastline perfectly aligned my interests, making it the ideal environment to undertake my degree. The field trip to Iceland was one of my favourite memories from my time at university –exploring an incredible landscape and undertaking fieldwork.”

Naomi

THE MURDER HOUSE

In our murder house, students studying Criminology or Policing carry out their own criminal investigation of a staged murder scenario. They work in teams to collect and record evidence, learning about the processes, techniques and methods of criminal investigations.

PSYCHOLOGY

Our regular field trips take full advantage of the stunning landscapes in Devon and Cornwall – including local beaches and Dartmoor. You’ll discover how psychology can make a real difference in the world – especially through exploring how nature supports mental health and wellbeing.

SCHOOL OF GEOGRAPHY, EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

In the final year, students can attend a school-wide field trip. The destination changes year-on-year,

but in 2026 the trip will explore the state-of-the-art Gobabeb Namib Research Institute in southern Africa. Students work with local partners to capture environmental issues, and use local expertise and knowledge to produce a crossdisciplinary environmental analysis report drawing on all of their own disciplines.

ARCHITECTURE

Our architecture students have ‘live project’ opportunities where they respond to a real-life brief, from a real client. They create designs, architectural drawings and models, then head off-campus to be a part of ‘the build’. These experiences help to inform our students’ future design practice.

“The way that real-world live projects are incorporated into the course at Plymouth feels really unique – I don’t know of other universities that have those kinds of live projects that get built, let alone by the students. In my first year, I projectmanaged a collaborative live project for a nursery school, for underprivileged children within the city.”

CHELSEY, LAW STUDENT

“I wanted to live on campus to be close to everything. There’s loads of storage, a desk and a pinboard, which I used to put photos up. The Accommodation team ran loads of socials and competitions all year too. I honestly loved living in halls, and I don’t think I know anyone who wouldn’t say the same.”

Events Management graduate HALLS OF CHOICE: Pilgrim

CONSIDERATION

When deciding what I wanted from halls, comfort was my main priority. I specifically wanted an en suite, so I had my own personal space. I was fortunate enough to have the funding to cover my expenses, but I do think cost is a factor for most students, as it was for me.

DECISION

I chose Pilgrim because it was close to campus and the city centre, had university support, and it had en suite rooms. I chose one of the “quiet flats” with a smaller number of flatmates which worked out well as it was just enough people to feel social but not overcrowded.

MAKING FRIENDS

I really enjoyed my time in halls. Honestly, making friends in halls was easier than I expected. My flatmates have become some of my closest friends, and those early connections helped me settle in so much faster, especially since everyone in halls feels the same way as you do –nervous but open to making new friends. As an introvert, I had to step out of my comfort zone, but it was so worth it. You don’t need to become best friends with everyone; just be polite, respectful, and be open to chats in the kitchen and common room areas.

APPLYING FOR STUDENT FINANCE

WHAT KIND OF LOANS AM I ELIGIBLE FOR?

If you’re eligible for student finance, a Tuition Fee Loan covers your course fees and is paid to your university. You can also apply for a Maintenance Loan which you’ll get at the start of each semester. These are awarded on a sliding scale, which means that the lower your household income, the more support you get and vice versa. It’s up to you how you spend it, but most students will use it for rent, food and day-to-day life.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A STUDENT LOAN?

You can apply online via the Student Finance England website on gov.uk, or alternatively you can apply by post. Whichever route you take, be aware that you may need to send evidence in the post, for example your passport or birth certificate.

WHAT DO I NEED WHEN APPLYING?

You will need:

• A bank account in your name. Your loan will be paid directly into your account in your name, so make sure you have one set up and keep a note of your details.

• A personal email address. If you apply online, this is an essential, and you will be sent important updates via email throughout the process.

• An up-to-date passport. If you don’t have one, you will need to send alternative documents to Student Finance England such as a birth certificate or an expired passport.

• If relevant, information about your parents’ or guardians’ income, including National Insurance numbers and savings, pensions, etc.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

The form has lots of questions, so make sure you set aside a couple of hours to complete it. From there, Student Finance England advise that it can take at least six weeks to respond to your application. While you wait, it’s a good idea to start planning a budget for your first year at uni so you’re fully prepared.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

Apply as early as you can to give you plenty of time before your course starts. Also, keep in mind that you will need to reapply for Student Finance England loans for each year, not just when you start uni. Finally, make sure you double check everything before you submit. Good luck!

OUR GRADUATE SUCCESS STORIES

“I spent the first two years of my degree absolutely certain I wanted to be a solicitor, and it wasn’t until I started working on my dissertation, “Trashion”, which explored intellectual property and copying in the fashion industry that I considered an alternative career in fashion.

After graduating, I began a MA in Fashion Design. Using my knowledge and experience from studying Law, I then started Rocket Fashion – a business consultancy company.

A few weeks into running my consultancy business, one of my clients launched her brand at London Fashion Week. It was so exciting to see how her brand had evolved and then support her through her brand’s first showcase. Waiting backstage, knowing that the seats lining the runway were filled with celebrities, buyers and fashion icons, was incredibly nerve-racking, but I will never forget that experience.

I can’t recommend the University enough. I had an incredible three years and part of me wishes I could do it all over again. There were more opportunities than I can count through sports and societies, and the staff were dedicated and inspiring as they helped me explore my routes into fashion. Even now when I am running a business, I continue to receive outstanding career and enterprise support from the University of Plymouth team.”

SAMUEL

Marine Science graduate

“I am currently working as an occupational therapist in a mental health unit. My role is to assess the new admissions for any required assessments and interventions. I run therapeutic groups such as cooking, relaxation, creative sessions and physical exercise. I also do psychoeducation and work with the clinical psychologist to create 1:1 plans for patients.

Since graduating, I have been provided with some amazing opportunities to enhance my knowledge, which have further developed me in my role. I have attended conferences and had specialist training, including eating disorder training delivered by SEDCAS (Severe Eating Disorder Consultation and Assessment Service) and dialectical behaviour theory (DPT) training with the Association of Psychological Therapies (APT). Placements on my course really prepared me and provided me with confidence in starting my career.

The best thing about my job is being part of a patient’s journey from acute illness to discharge. I love seeing patients progress and being part of a team that has patient-centred care and the recovery module at the heart of everything we do.”

“Marine conservation was the focus of my degree and is now the focus of my career.

Since graduating, I have started to grow a marine monitoring programme in Fiji. The project I am leading is working towards implementing new marine protected areas, which we hope will have a real positive impact for Fijian people, and help save one of the most beautiful marine environments on our planet.

The University is helping me achieve this by providing a network of people that are looking to collaborate or offer advice. Having contacts associated with the University is an asset as strong as the degree itself.

Reputation alone was enough to make me apply for a place at the University. The world-class research opportunities, the staff leading their fields, and the facilities all had an enormous influence on my choice.

By choosing Plymouth, I could live in the perfect place to do all the things I love while I studied. I could enjoy some of the best diving in the UK, surf, and explore beautiful Dartmoor.”
