FROM THE EDITOR

February brings a subtle shift in the season and in our mindset. The year is no longer brand new, but it’s beginning to find its shape. The days are noticeably lighter, the city feels a little busier, and there’s a renewed energy as Plymouth moves forward with purpose and optimism.

This edition is all about connection, reflection and looking after what matters most. February invites us to slow down just enough to appreciate the people, places and passions that bring meaning to our everyday lives.

I’ve truly enjoyed bringing this issue together and hope it offers inspiration, warmth and a few moments of pause amid the busyness of the season.

As always, I’d love to hear from you. Your thoughts, stories and suggestions help shape this magazine and keep it closely connected to the people and places that make Plymouth special. You can reach me at editor@oracle.uk.net , and I’ll always do my best to respond.

GET YOUR GARDEN READY FOR SUMMERTIME

Get a head start and begin pruning your garden ready for spring and summer.

During the warmer months, we spend a lot more time in the garden rather than indoors therefore it’s important to keep it looking nice so that when the sun does decide to come out, your garden will be ready for you. I have compiled the best tips and tricks for gardening in February as well as ways to make your garden feel like a mini oasis and a place where you’ll want to spend time in.

Planting

Gardening in February tends to happen towards the end of the month once most of the frosty weather has passed. Gardening is seasonal therefore if we do end up getting the Beast from the East again, then we will have to put the gardening tools down

months. Start sowing seeds of hardy annuals such as cosmos and greenhouse crops such as tomatoes. You can also sow seeds of cool-season plants like kale, broad beans, lettuce and sweet peas if you don’t own a heated propagator and grow lamp. Make sure you keep your seeds in pots placed on a warm, sunny window sill.

Preparing your potatoes ready to be planted can be done in February. The process of encouraging seed potatoes into growth before planting is known as ‘chitting’. You can still plant seed potatoes if they haven’t been chitted but it will give them a head start, you can purchase seed potatoes from Endsleigh Garden Centre and Otter Nurseries.

for a little while longer but being in an area that doesn’t get much snow… if any, means that we can get ahead and begin sowing seeds in February.

Sowing seeds early on in the year means you will have longer to enjoy them throughout the warmer

Although February is early on in the year to be gardening, it’s actually a fairly busy month for pruning. You can start pruning Clematis, Wisteria, Winter Jasmine, Hydrangea, Buddleia, Cornus, Mahonia, Evergreen shrubs, Climbing and Bush roses. Spring flowering shrubs can be pruned after flowering, usually in early summer so don’t prune these in February or you will cut off the new buds.

Lilies, Anemone, Crocosmia and other late-spring flowering bulbs can be planted during February/March which will bring a wider array of colours when spring comes along.

Landscaping

Creating an oasis in your garden can be difficult and expensive to achieve but you can begin by thinking about what you use your garden for the most. Do you have a busy family and host lots of BBQs and mini football games? Do you prefer using the garden to plant and grow your own vegetables and enjoy a cup of tea? Or do you use your garden as an escape from day-to-day life with calming features and places to relax and unwind? Whatever it is, it’s time to make some changes to ensure you are making the most of your outdoor space.

DIY SPA DAY

alentine’s Day is often synonymous with grand romantic gestures, heartshaped chocolates, and fancy dinner dates. But this year, why not make it about self-love, quality time, and indulgence in the comfort of your own home? Whether you’re celebrating solo, hosting a Galentine’s evening with your closest friends, or enjoying a cozy night with your partner, a DIY spa day is the perfect way to relax, rejuvenate, and show yourself some well-deserved love. With a few thoughtful touches and luxurious products, you can transform your home into a haven of tranquility and pampering.

Set the Mood

Creating the right ambiance is key to a successful spa experience. Start by decluttering your space and dimming the lights. Light a scented candle to fill the room with calming aromas like lavender, geranium, or frankincense— scents known for reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

Play gentle background music or nature sounds to enhance the soothing atmosphere. Soft towels, fluffy robes, and cozy slippers will complete the vibe and make you feel like you’ve stepped into a professional spa.

Cleanse and Detox

Begin your spa day with a detoxifying cleanse to prepare your skin and body for ultimate relaxation. Start with a warm shower or a long soak in the bath. Adding a mineral-rich bath soak with salts and essential oils can help

detoxify the skin while easing muscle tension.

For an all-over body cleanse, use a gentle, nourishing body wash formulated with natural ingredients to leave your skin feeling refreshed, clean, and hydrated.

Pamper Your Skin

After cleansing, treat your skin to an exfoliating ritual. Use a body scrub made with salt or sugar and nourishing oils to gently slough away dead skin cells, leaving your skin soft, smooth, and glowing. Pay special attention to areas like elbows, knees, and heels.

For your face, apply a hydrating face mask and take time to truly relax while it works its magic. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, seaweed, or botanical extracts to soothe, replenish, and revive tired skin.

Indulge in a Massage

No spa day is complete without a massage. If you’re celebrating with your partner, this is the perfect opportunity for a couples’ massage. Choose a rich body oil infused with nourishing plant oils and softly floral essential oils such as rose or geranium to promote relaxation and emotional balance.

If you’re flying solo or hosting a

Galentine’s evening, enjoy a self-massage or take turns giving massages with a friend. Focus on tension-prone areas like the neck, shoulders, hands, and feet.

Hydrate and Nourish

After your massage, lock in moisture with a rich body cream that melts into the skin and leaves it feeling deeply hydrated. Don’t forget your hands—apply a nourishing hand balm to soothe dry, winter-worn skin.

Finish your skincare routine with a luxurious facial moisturiser formulated with antioxidants and botanical ingredients to help improve elasticity and leave your skin feeling soft, plump, and refreshed.

Relax and Unwind

Now that your body and skin are fully pampered, it’s time to slow down and enjoy the moment. Sip on a cup of herbal tea crafted to promote calm and well-being, or treat yourself to a glass of champagne or your favourite sparkling drink for a celebratory touch.

If you’re with friends, this is the perfect time for laughter, games, or a feel-good movie. With your partner, enjoy quiet moments together or exchange thoughtful gifts. And if you’re spending the evening solo, relish the peace—curl up with a good book, journal your thoughts, or

The Bene ts of Having a Will: Protecting Your Family and Your Legacy

Planning for the future is one of the most responsible gifts you can give your loved ones. While it is natural to hope for the best, life is unpredictable, and taking steps now to protect your family and your estate ensures that your wishes are respected and your loved ones are cared for. At its core, a legally valid will is far more than a simple document. It is a cornerstone of thoughtful planning, providing clarity, security and peace of mind.

Ensuring Your Wishes Are Honoured

A will allows you to decide exactly how your estate is distributed. Without one, your assets are allocated according to the law of intestacy, which may not align with your personal wishes. This can result in unintended outcomes, where loved ones receive less than you intended, or those you hoped to support are overlooked entirely.

Through a will, you can make provisions for every aspect of your estate, from financial assets to personal items of sentimental value. If you have children under 18, a will allows you to appoint trusted guardians to care for them, giving you peace of mind that their future is secure. You can also outline instructions for trusts, charitable donations or family businesses, ensuring your estate is managed in accordance with your intentions.

Reducing Stress and Family Disputes

One of the most important, yet often overlooked, benefits of a will is its ability to prevent conflict. The passing of a loved one is an emotional time, and without clear instructions, uncertainty over an estate can exacerbate grief and strain relationships. A well-drafted will provides a clear roadmap for your family, minimising disagreements and easing the burden during difficult times.

It also simplifies the responsibilities of executors, empowering them to manage your estate efficiently and in

line with your wishes. Clear guidance means your loved ones can focus on supporting one another rather than navigating unnecessary legal challenges.

Legal and Financial Protection

A professionally prepared will offers significant legal and financial protection. It ensures that your estate is distributed according to your wishes, rather than defaulting to statutory rules that may not consider your unique circumstances. It can help minimise tax liabilities, protect family businesses and secure financial arrangements for dependants.

Even modest estates benefit from having a will. By creating one, you provide clarity, protect your loved ones and reduce the risk of legal complications that can arise in the absence of proper planning.

Highlighting Professional Support

For many families, professional guidance makes the process of drafting a will straightforward and reassuring. For example, Will Writers Services (willwritersservices.co.uk) is a local, family run will writing and estate planning business serving clients across Cornwall and South and West Devon. They offer personalised advice, draft your documents in clear language, and can even visit you at home to take your instructions, helping to make the entire process as simple and comfortable as possible.

On the other hand, law firms like Woollcombe Yonge Solicitors (woollcombeyonge.co.uk) provide comprehensive legal support not only for wills but for broader estate planning matters such as inheritance tax planning, trusts, probate, lasting powers of attorney and other complex legal needs. Their experienced solicitors offer tailored advice, ensuring that your estate planning aligns with current legislation and your individual circumstances.

Similarly, firms such as Wolferstans (wolferstans.com) offer expert legal support for individuals and families seeking peace of mind through careful estate planning. With offices across Devon and a strong reputation for personal, client-focused service, their experienced solicitors provide clear, practical advice on wills, inheritance tax planning, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. By taking the time to understand each client’s personal circumstances, Wolferstans helps ensure that wills are legally robust, tax-efficient and fully aligned with long-term family and financial goals.

Planning for the Unexpected Life can change in an instant. Illness, accidents or sudden events can leave your loved ones unprotected if you do not have a will in place. By planning proactively, you demonstrate foresight and responsibility, securing your family’s future even in unforeseen circumstances.

A will can also incorporate long term strategies, such as trusts and tax planning, offering continuity and reducing potential financial burdens or disputes that could otherwise arise.

Peace of Mind

Perhaps the greatest benefit of a will is the peace of mind it provides. Knowing that your loved ones are cared for and your wishes will be respected allows you to focus on living fully today.

Conclusion

A will is far more than a legal formality. It is an expression of care, foresight and responsibility. It protects your loved ones, safeguards your assets and provides clarity during one of life’s most emotional times.

Taking the time to plan today is one of the most meaningful ways to safeguard your legacy and protect the people who matter most.

OM RECOMMENDS:

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill Plymouth offers a dining experience that feels carefully considered, refined, and genuinely enjoyable from the moment you arrive until the final course. Located on the top floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the restaurant combines elegant surroundings with confident cooking and attentive service, creating a setting that feels well-suited to both special occasions and relaxed, high-quality dining.

The elevated position of the restaurant gives it an undeniable sense of occasion. Sitting high above the city, it offers sweeping views across Plymouth Hoe, the Sound, and out towards the open sea. These views provide a striking backdrop throughout the day, with natural light filling the dining room in the afternoon and softer, more atmospheric tones taking over in the evening. While the scenery adds to the experience, it never overshadows the restaurant’s real strengths: the food, the drinks, and the welcoming atmosphere.

Inside, the restaurant is stylish yet approachable. The décor is modern and polished, with comfortable seating and a layout that feels spacious without being impersonal. Tables are well-positioned, allowing for privacy and relaxed conversation, and the overall ambience strikes a pleasing balance between elegance and comfort. It is a space where guests can feel dressed up without feeling out of place, and equally comfortable enjoying a more casual evening out.

The service is a standout feature. From the first greeting to the final

farewell, the staff are warm, professional, and genuinely attentive. They strike an excellent balance between being helpful and giving guests space to enjoy their meal. The team are knowledgeable about the menu, happy to offer recommendations, and attentive to individual needs, whether that means adjusting a dish or guiding diners through drink pairings. These small but thoughtful touches make the experience feel personal and well managed.

The food lives up to the reputation of a Marco Pierre White steakhouse. The menu focuses on classic dishes prepared with confidence, quality ingredients, and careful attention to detail. Steaks are, unsurprisingly, a highlight, cooked exactly as requested and full of rich, well developed flavour. Each cut is served with thoughtfully chosen accompaniments that enhance rather than overwhelm the main ingredient. Starters and mains feel indulgent but well-balanced, making it easy to enjoy a full three-course meal without feeling heavy.

Importantly, the menu also caters well to non-meat eaters. Vegan diners are clearly considered, with several appealing options available. Dishes such as a plant-based steak alternative served with seasonal vegetables, or a flavourful vegan risotto, offer satisfying choices that feel intentional rather than like afterthoughts. These options are well presented and packed with flavour, ensuring that vegan guests can enjoy the same level of quality and care as the rest of the table.

Desserts provide a fitting end to the meal, with generous portions and rich flavours. Whether choosing a classic pudding or something lighter, the dessert menu offers a satisfying conclusion without feeling repetitive. Vegan friendly dessert options are also available, allowing everyone to end the meal on a high note.

The cocktail menu deserves special mention. The bar is well stocked, and the cocktails are thoughtfully crafted, making it an ideal place to begin the evening or linger afterwards. From classic favourites to

more contemporary creations, each drink is well balanced and attractively presented. Cocktails pair particularly well with the relaxed atmosphere, encouraging guests to take their time and enjoy the setting.

What truly sets Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill Plymouth apart is how seamlessly all these elements come together. The stylish interior, confident food, inclusive menu, expertly mixed cocktails, and attentive staff combine to create an experience that feels polished without being formal. It is not just a place to eat, but a place to enjoy good food, good company, and a sense of occasion.

In summary, this restaurant stands out as a destination in Plymouth for those seeking quality dining in an impressive setting. With excellent service, a strong food and cocktail offering, and thoughtful options for vegan diners, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill Plymouth delivers a dining experience that feels memorable from start to finish.

PIZZA

RECIPES

February 9th is National Pizza Day therefore we have a delicious pizza dough recipe as well as some topping ideas.

Pizza Margherita Makes - 2 Pizzas INGREDIENTS

• 300g strong bread flour

• 1 tsp instant yeast (from a sachet or a tub)

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

For the tomato sauce

• 100ml passata

• handful fresh basil or 1 tsp dried

• 1 garlic clove, crushed

For the topping

• 125g ball mozzarella, sliced handful grated or shaved parmesan (or vegetarian alternative)

• handful of cherry tomatoes, halved

• handful of basil leaves (optional)

Make the base: Put the flour into a large bowl, then stir in the yeast and salt. Make a well, pour in 200ml warm water and the olive oil and bring together with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 mins until smooth. Cover with a tea towel and set aside.

Make the sauce: Mix the passata, basil and crushed garlic together, then season to taste. Leave to stand at room temperature while you get on with shaping the base.

Topping Ideas

Roll out the dough: if you’ve let the dough rise, give it a quick knead, then split into two balls. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into large rounds, about 25cm across, using a rolling pin. The dough needs to be very thin as it will rise in the oven. Lift the rounds onto two floured baking sheets.

Top and bake: heat the oven to 240C/220C fan/gas 8. Put another baking sheet or an upturned baking tray in the oven on the top shelf. Smooth sauce over bases with the back of a spoon. Scatter with cheese and tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil and season. Put one pizza, still on its baking sheet, on top of the preheated sheet or tray. Bake for 8-10 mins until crisp. Serve with a little more olive oil, and basil leaves if using. Repeat step for remaining pizza.

GOOD PANCAKE DAY!

FEB 17TH: HAVE A FLIPPING

French

Wafer-thin and delicate, thin and flat. Crêpes tend to be larger in diameter than pancakes, and are often rolled or folded with a filling. They differ from the savoury Galette form, which is made from buckwheat flour to give it an unsweetened taste. Crêpes for those with a sweet tooth and make great desserts, with popular fillings including banana, ice cream, strawberries and chocolate.

American

Easy with Three

Thick and fluffy, small and round. Thanks to the American pancake batter having a raising agent in it such as baking powder, they rise to form dense bitesize pancakes that are typically stacked in groups. They also tend to have a filling (such as blueberries) mixed into the batter and cooked within the pancake itself. Alternatively, the pancake stack itself can be topped with fresh fruits or, sticking to American tradition, maple syrup and bacon for a breakfast treat - yum!

Why not try some of our suggestions to put a twist on this year’s celebrations?

All you need is one large ripe banana, two eggs and a slither of butter to make around 6-8 pancakes. Mash the bananas and add the eggs until a consistent batter forms and then coat a warm frying pan in melted butter. With the butter bubbling, ladel small amounts of the batter into the pan in order to cook approximately two or three at once. Flip with a spatula after the batter has stopped sticking to the pan and bubbles appear on the pancake surface. Once browned on both sides and the sides have stopped sticking, serve.

Cheesy like the movies

With such a large variety of cheese available, there is a wide range of cheesy pancake options. Take 55g of plain flour, an egg, a pinch of salt, 140ml of milk, half a teaspoon of oil and the cheese of your choice. Cheddar may be a safe bet, but if you’re feeling more adventurous, try a blue cheese twist. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and fry portions of the mixture as you would a standard pancake. Then it’s time for toppings! We recommend tasty additions such as cream cheese, avocado, parma ham or bacon, but you can also try it with carbonara sauce, spinach and chicken or fried asparagus with garlic.

Whether the 17th of February is a date already in your mind for this year, or you’re the type to make a last-minute mad dash to the shops as the kids scream out for the all important batter and toppings; pancake day is for everyone. As a celebration of Shrove Tuesday, historically pancakes have been made to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk before the 40-day fasting season of Lent begins, and, while the basic recipes still stand, there have since been many evolutions to spice up your Tuesday feast.
