Editor’s Note... October is my favourite time of year, hot chocolates, wooly scarves and cold evenings can only mean one thing.. Christmas is almost here! We had a chat with Emma Milford at St Luke’s Hospice, who has been appointed Project Manager for a very exciting event- Elmer’s Big Parade. Roper James has a wealth of legal knowledge and pride themselves on their exceptional client care. Established in 2010 to specialise in Personal Injury and Medical Negligence claims, the team go above and beyond to make sure the client is at the forefront of everything they do. Having recently expanded their services to include Wills and Lifetime planning, we catch up with Tim Roper, David James and Mel Cotterill to learn a little more about the business.

Tim was previously in the Police before emigrating to the Bermuda Police at the age of 21 where he served for 8 years. “After moving back to Plymouth with my wife Kathy and new baby son, I wanted a complete career change but it seemed you could not progress without a degree. I have always had an interest in the law and so I chose to read Law at Plymouth University.” David previously served in the RAF, following which he had roles where he honed his customer relations skills which included a position of Assistant Manager at The Two Bridges Hotel. “I really enjoyed this close contact with clients and have brought this to my legal practice.” After completing their Law Degrees followed by postgraduate law school, both David and Tim began training with a local Law Firm here in Plymouth. “This is where we met each other; I was a Partner and Head of Personal Injury and David was working within the Industrial Disease Team. We came to the realisation that we wanted to branch out and offer a more specialised service relying on our expertise” explains Tim. David and Tim made the decision to go it alone and put everything on the line to start up their own Law Firm. “The first 6 months were a real mixture of excitement and dread of what happens if it doesn’t go the way we expected” Tim explains. Fast forward almost 9 years later, both David and Tim can confidently say that it was the best decision they ever made. “I am extremely proud of this firm and the people that work with us. We have a strong team of professionals able to offer the very best service to the people that need us”.

Roper James excel when it comes to drafting Wills and Administering Estates, contesting Wills, Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury claims; whether this be through an accident at work, asbestos exposure or hearing loss. David, who specialises in asbestos claims, explains that as Plymouth is a dockyard town there was a high level of asbestos exposure which has sadly led to a significant number of Plymothians suffering with the diseases caused by asbestos. “The illnesses that can result from asbestos exposure can be awful”. David explains. “Asbestos was used predominantly in the 50’s, 60’s, 70s and 80’s, not only in the Dockyard but in many industries across Plymouth. The damage it causes can take years to surface, so even though the initial exposure was a long time ago, sufferers are still entitled to make an Asbestos Compensation Claim but it is important to seek advice from a specialist lawyer like me”. “What I find is that the people who are suffering from terminal asbestos illnesses have usually come to terms with the condition and their main concern is ensuring that the family they leave behind will be looked after when they are no longer around. “This selfless attitude never fails to amaze me and at Roper James we pull out all the stops to make sure that if possible the claim is resolved in that person’s lifetime so they can have peace of mind.”

Having recently taken part in St Luke’s ‘Make a Will Week’ they have also raised much needed funds for Children’s Hospice South West. Tim explains how he recently donated a Field Gun to Ernesettle Community School after watching a competition take place on The Hoe at Armed Forces Day. “The Field Gun is part of Plymouth’s proud heritage. There was a Junior Field Gun competition and both teachers and students were having so much fun and thoroughly enjoying the disciplined competition. A few weeks later I bumped into the Organiser and he explained how some schools are prevented from competing as they struggle to fund the equipment”. “I was delighted to present Ernesettle Community School with their very own Field Gun at a special assembly enabling them to compete in the competition at the Armed Forces Day back in June!” Looking to the future, Tim and David say they are excited to expand on the Wills and Probate services that Mel brings to the company. “Mel’s strength is building the Department and further strengthening that side of the business. or 10 weeks in the summer of 2019, a parade of 40 fabulously colourful elephants shall be taking you on a trail around the city of Plymouth. From the hustle and bustle of the city streets to the spectacular coastline; Elmer’s Big Parade will navigate you around Britain’s Ocean City on a fun and engaging trail- all whilst raising awareness of the amazing work of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. St Luke’s Hospice are working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring this mass participation, family friendly art trail to life- featuring the much loved children’s character of Elmer, by Devon born author and artist David Mckee. We speak to Emma Milford- Project Manager and self confessed ‘Elmer’s Mum’ to learn a little more about this exciting event and the hard work that is happening behind the scenes. “St Luke’s are more than just ‘the building on the hill” explains Emma. The dedicated and compassionate members of staff saw 3531 patients last year and travelled over 66,800 miles, covering not only Plymouth but areas as far as East Cornwall, Dartmoor and the South Hams. A well known charity within the Plymouth community- St Luke’s work to achieve dignity, comfort and choice for people affected by lifelimiting illnesses, through delivering and influencing exceptional care. Professionalism, respect, compassion and integrity are the foundations on which their services

are based- and the charity strives to raise funds and awareness through their shops and numerous fundraising events across the city. Looking for new ways to help raise the £4.2 million required each year, St Luke’s are working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring well known character Elmer to life on the streets of Plymouth and the surrounding area. Elmer’s Big Parade is set to be a huge event for our city; bringing businesses, artists and the community together whilst also offering opportunities to create long lasting memories and make a real difference to patients and families under the care of St Luke’s. Emma, who has a wealth of experience when it comes to charity and fundraising initiatives- took on the role of project manager 10 months ago and is working hard to ensure everything runs smoothly.“Wild in Art are huge when it comes to art trails! They approached Andersen Press- the publishers of Elmer, hoping to do something to celebrate the books 30th birthday in 2019. Wild in Art then pitched the idea to us here at St Luke’s and it came at the perfect time. We are always looking at new and exciting ways to raise funds and this is a great way to do so”. Talking about the significance of the trail to Plymouth as a city, Emma explains that David Mckee was born and bred in Tavistock and attended Plymouth College of Art. “It’s amazing to be able to have Elmer’s 30th Birthday being brought back to his roots here in Plymouth. There are similar art trails happening in Ipswich and Newcastle and the publishers want to make a big splash with this, and turn the country patchwork!” “Elmer is one of the biggest selling children’s books of all time, all over the world. Japan even has their own adult clothing range. He is hugely popular due to being so accessible to everybody. He’s all about diversity, celebrating being different and everyone can relate to that in their own way”.

Consisting of 40 uniquely painted Elmer sculptures, the trail will feature artwork from both emerging and established local artists. Going live on July 8th 2019, the trails will be around for 10 weeks before the sculptures are auctioned off to raise crucial funds for St Luke’s Hospice. Emma tells us that anyone can enter their designs to the trail, and this makes way for diverse and exciting interpretations. “We anticipate over 100 applications after the deadline at the end of this month. From an art perspective, Plymouth is a real hub for creativity and I don’t think we celebrate it enough. This event will really put some of our local artists on the map which is a fantastic opportunity for them”. “We’ve already had one elephant designed by Brian Pollard for our launch event back in March. You can have an elephant designed by someone as well known as Brian- and then on the complete opposite end of the spectrum you could have someone who has never shown anyone their art and wants to showcase their talent”. Each Elmer sculpture will be sponsored by a local business- offering a great marketing opportunity to promote their brand and a way to engage with staff, customers and the wider community. Printed maps and an interactive app will help the public keep track of where they have found an elephant around the cityoffering a unique code that they can input for a reward from the chosen sponsor. “Once you’ve found all 40 elephants you can claim a special prize so it makes for a really fun event for all ages”. Emma explains that alongside the Big Parade, there will be a bespoke trail of smaller Elmer sculptures that will be designed by local schools and community groups as part of the Education Programme.

As a hospice we believe talking about death and dying is extremely important. The education programme will engage with local schools and community groups to help them explore the subject of death and dying but in a creative and safe way. “25 schools around the city will design an Elmer sculpture of their own, and when they take part, they will receive a resource pack inspired by the stories of Elmer, covering subjects such as loss, making memories and diversity. The programme will be tied to the curriculum, whilst also linking with the nationally recognised Arts Award”. It’s really great to have the opportunity for children and adults to talk and engage in some really sensitive subjects, but in a fun and creative way. An elephant never forgets and that’s a key message for us too. We want to help people create lasting memories and at St Luke’s we are very proud that we can do this for many patients and their families. Emma explains that at the end of the 10 week trail, all of the elephants will come together in one location for a ‘Farewell Weekend’ in October, offering the public a chance to see all the sculptures in one place and tick off any that they weren’t able to find during the trail. After this, the large Elmer sculptures will be auctioned off, with the ultimate goal to raise significant funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. What is guaranteed to be an exciting and innovative event for Plymouth, Elmer’s Big Parade will not only positively contribute to the economic, cultural and social life of the city- but also enable St Luke’s to continue to provide their outstanding compassionate care.

Wyatt Brothers Funeral Directors are an independent, family run business based in Stonehouse, Plymouth. With a personal and caring service being at the top of their priorities, James and John Wyatt with family friend Richard Winfield go above and beyond to ensure your loved ones memory is honoured in the best possible way. We catch up with John to learn a little more about how the business was formed.

yatt Brothers consists of twin brothers James and John Wyatt and Richard Winfield, who are all experienced Funeral Directors offering their services to the people of Plymouth. Based in The old Brewery Building in Stonehouse, The tight knit team of three have built the business up over the past three years, calling upon their individual experiences within the industry. John Wyatt explains that he was brought up within a Vicarage, so people calling up for funeral and wedding arrangements were commonplace for both himself and his brother. “My father was a clergyman, and before we went off to higher education- the local undertaker approached my Father and asked if we would like to be pall-bearers to earn pocket money, I think he charged more for matching twin pall-bearers rather like a pair of horses!” John said laughing. John and his brother went off to Agricultural College after school to learn the trade as their mother’s family were farmers. However, it wasn’t long after qualifying, they both found themselves back in the funeral industry. As they missed the bereaved families a result of their caring, pastoral upbringing. “It’s funny, as twins you tend to do everything at the same time. We became pall-bearers together when we were young, we went to Agricultural College together, but then we went out into the world separately. After college I went off to Oxfordshire to run a Funeral Directors there, and James went back to the undertakers we worked for when we were 16”.

Sadly, the twin’s mother died when they were only twenty eight due John Wyatt and Richard Winfield to a short term illness- meaning that John made the move south to be near his sister in Tavistock. “This, coupled with the fact that our father also died two years later- meant that I wanted absolutely nothing to do with funerals at that point, it was too close to home”. At the age of 29 years old; John had a complete career change and spent the next 8 years working at a busy call centre in Plympton. John then took a career break, to travel and soak up everything that the South West had to offer. “After a while I realised I missed the work involved with the funeral industry- talking to families, working out what it is I can do to help them- getting to know their values and what was important to their loved one”. After working for a well established funeral care provider for over a year, John made the decision to go it alone and start up his very own business- Wyatt Brothers. John invited Richard to join him after he left the services as he had known his family for many years. Whilst Richard was serving in the Royal Navy, his Father, a former Royal Marine and active Royal Marine Reserve, sadly died which sparked his interest in the funeral world. With the focus on offering a reliable and above all- personal approach to funerals, Wyatt Brothers strive to ensure you feel welcome, comfortable and able to relax whilst arranging a personal send off for your loved one or friend. Having moved into what was originally the Old Brewery building in Stonehouse, John personally renovated the derelict building into their well established funeral home. ‘It was the first time I had ever wallpapered!” John laughs. Wyatt Brothers predominantly visit families in the comfort of their own homes, but in cases where this is

not possible- the funeral home on Durnford Street is a welcoming alternative. Far from the cold, corporate image in many people’s minds when thinking of a funeral home- the comfy sofas, fireplace, soft lighting and sideboards overflowing with thank you cards certainly make it feel homely- and not at all a daunting place to be. John and Richard make an effort to rid the business of the traditional stereotypes of Funeral Directors. Wyatt Brothers decided to break the mould, with an original smart but casual look, not wearing black during the week. “Families say they find us much more approachable and love that on the day of the Funeral we are very much on parade in smart black silk Top Hats and Tails. We are both quite cheerful people and we aim to draw out happy memories whenever we can. QUITTING SMOKING IS EASIER WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT

toptober is back – it’s like October, but without the cigarettes. If you’ve tried quitting before but found it difficult, try again this month and you’ll be joining thousands of others as you collectively kick the habit. The addiction lies with nicotine, but just the act of smoking can be addictive. For example, you might always light up during your lunch break, or when you get home from work. Perhaps you always have a cigarette with a cup of tea, and when you crave one you find yourself wondering what to do with your hands.

Tobacco smoke contains over 5,000 chemicals, including tar and nicotine. Not only does quitting improve your health instantly, it’s also good for your wallet. A person who smokes 20-a-day will save around £275 a month, which is over £3,000 a year. If money is the primary reason pushing you to quit, then use the old, tried-and-tested method of putting the money you’ve saved into a jar each week. You’ll soon have saved up enough for a holiday or a nice treat for you and the family.

If you stop smoking when you’re 30, you’re likely to live 10 years longer. Did you know, just 24 hours after having your last cigarette your lungs will already be working to clean out the debris left behind by tobacco smoke. After 48 hours you’ll notice that you can smell and taste better, and after 72 hours your energy levels will be on the rise. It really doesn’t take long to notice the difference. As the weeks, months and years pass smoke-free, your circulation will improve, your lung function will increase and you’ll massively reduce your risk of a heart attack and lung cancer.

E-cigarettes are a less harmful way to receive nicotine as you try to quit. The vapour doesn’t contain tar. The withdrawal symptoms often put smokers off quitting. You may feel irritable, have an increased appetite and struggle to concentrate. Keep in mind that all of this is temporary, and that the benefits of quitting far outweigh the difficult withdrawal process. Don’t go ‘cold turkey’ if the thought scares you. There’s plenty of support available online, from your doctor and at the pharmacy. Anyone you speak to will be pleased to hear that you’re trying to give up cigarettes. Try e-cigarettes and ‘vape’, gum or patches and see which works best for you. It’s never too late to quit. Have a great Stoptober!

atalie completed her eighteen month training period and became a fully qualified Solicitor in February. Working within the thriving Commercial Property department, Natalie explains she enjoys the friendly and open atmosphere at Bright Solicitors. Natalie Puckey joined Andrew Beddow’s Commercial Property team after working as a paralegal for two years, specialising in debt recovery and insolvency matters. Natalie now works on a portfolio of work for major property investors in and around Plymouth, with particular emphasis on acting for investors and occupiers in the office, industrial and retail markets. Explaining how she became interested in the profession, Natalie always aspired to join the Police force from a young age, but became interested in Law after completing an A level in the subject at Truro College. “I had no legal experience at this point but I went to Plymouth University to complete a Law Degree. Similar to Connie, Natalie followed this with a Post Graduate Legal Practice course straight away at the Plymouth Business School. “I did consider taking some time out to travel, but I thought it was best to continue my education whilst it was all still fresh in my mind!” After graduating, Natalie built up her paralegal experience before coming to Bright to complete her eighteen month training period. Natalie explains that within this time, she was required to sit in each department within the company for 6 months, to help her decide where she would like to specialise. I had previous experience in litigation

and debt recovery but had never touched upon property until I came to Bright. It is a lot more varied and I like the challenges that come with working in this department. Having joined Matt Cook’s commercial team, Connie is keen to get to know all of Bright’s clients better. “Joining Matt’s team gives me the opportunity to build on my knowledge and experience of helping clients with issues that they face- whether that is growing and developing their business, or ensuring that their contract terms and conditions are relevant and enforceable”. Connie became inspired to pursue a career in law after taking part in a national competition- the Bar Mock Trails; an extracurricular activity in schools all over the UK that aims to give pupils insight into the legal system. Students act out criminal cases from the point of view of advocates, witnesses, the jury and defenceand compete against other schools in real courtrooms to work their way through to the national final. “I was always quite theatrical so I loved that we could dress up in the robes and the wig! We made it to the finals twice. This sparked my interest and I ultimately went on to complete a Law Degree at Cardiff University”.

HALLOWEEN HISTORIES It’s believed that Halloween began with the Celts, who lived over 2,000 years ago on the land that we now call Ireland, United Kingdom and France. They believed that the dead would return on 31st October, a date they called Samhain, and they would dress up, offer sacrifices and light bonfires to ward off spirits.

During the eighth century, 1st November was named All Saints Day, to honour saints and martyrs, and the evening before became All Hallows’ Eve, and later, Halloween. There are many different beliefs about the date which have formed over the years, with many cultures relating Halloween to marriage, and in some cases spirits would be celebrated rather than feared, as we traditionally believe today. We still celebrate the date, mainly as way of welcoming in Autumn, but it still holds onto its creepy history and traditions.

the jack'o'lantern The Jack-o-Lantern originated in Ireland. The act of carving faces into vegetables is based on a myth about a man called Stingy Jack who made deals with the devil. The story begins with Jack and the Devil having a drink together, but after realising that he cannot pay, Jack asks the Devil to turn himself into a coin. Jack then pops this coin into his pocket next to a small cross, preventing the Devil from turning back into himself. Eventually, Jack makes a deal to set him free but only if he will leave him alone for one year, and that if Jack dies, the Devil will not claim his soul. The Devil sticks to his word and meets Jack again one year on. This time Jack sends him up a tree to pick some fruit, and while the Devil is high in the branches, Jack carves a cross into the tree to prevent him from climbing back down. After some time, Jack tells the Devil that he will let him down only if he agrees not to bother him for another ten years. 32

Eventually Jack dies, but because of the way he has lived his life, God will not let him into heaven, and the Devil, based on their agreement, refuses to take Jack’s soul to hell. Instead Jack is left to roam forever, and uses carved out vegetables lit with a candle to see his way. It’s traditional for households to make their own lanterns and leave them in the window to scare the spirit of Stingy Jack away. It was later taken to America with the migrants, where they found that pumpkins made a much more suitable lantern.

trick or treat In Celtic celebrations on 31st October, villagers would dress up to ward off spirits and would leave out treats to satisfy any unwelcome, phantom visitors. Soon, people would dress up as ghosts and wear other terrifying costumes, putting on an act in exchange for candy. This is trick or treating in its oldest form. Skip ahead a few years, and 2nd November became All Souls Day in England. Poor people would visit the homes of the rich and ask that they pray for their deceased loved ones. Soon, children would start knocking on the doors of the wealthy asking for food and money. In Scotland and Ireland children would wear costumes and perform tricks on people’s doorsteps in exchange for a treat. This was known as guising. Many years later, immigrants arriving in America, particularly from Ireland, made Halloween popular and introduced the tradition of guising. Over time it became a rowdy activity and an opportunity for young people to create havoc, but sugar rationing during World War 2 put an end to it. Trick or Treating became popular again, and continues to be to this day, and has been promoted over the years by the media. The industry is now booming, with sweet companies making a fortune in October each year, particularly in the US.

APPLE

BOBBING Apple-bobbing dates back to the Roman invasion of Britain. With them they bought the apple tree, and when an apple is sliced in half the seeds form a pentagram shape - this symbol was believed to be related to marriage. On 31st October young people would “bob” for apples which were floating in water and the first to get a bite onto one would be the next to marry. A variation of the game would be to hang the apples from a line using string.

MELTED CHOCOLATE PUDDINGS

Sweet tooth? These oozing individual puddings are sure to put a smile on your face.

Ingredients

Prep: 10 mins

• 4 tablespoons Butter • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk • 170g icing sugar • 8 soft caramel sweets • 3 tablespoons ﬂour • 57g chopped dark chocolate

Method 1. Heat oven to 220C. Line 2 ramekins with butter. In a bowl, combine the butter and dark chocolate and then melt in the microwave. Mix in the icing sugar, eggs and then flour. Continue until no white streaks remain, but be careful not to over-mix. Pour 1/4 of the mix into each ramekin. 2. Cut 5 of the caramels into quarters, dividing them between the two ramekins and placing them in the center of the ramekin. Use the remaining mix to cover the caramels. 3. Bake for 12 minutes, or until the edges pull away from the ramekins but the center is not completely cooked through. Once cool, flip the ramekins over to serve and top with caramel pieces and coarse sea salt.
