At times, some of us in smaller businesses may often find ourselves feeling quite isolated, however by coming together with other like minded businesses and business people, it’s astonishing how much can be achieved through a collaboration of different skill sets, mindsets and overall, people. This is exactly what the Plym Chamber are all about.

here are many different networking groups that business owners can explore around Plymouth and the South Hams however one of the largest networking groups, local to Plympton, is set to see a lot of exciting changes in the very near future. Formerly known as the Plympton Chamber, the newly renamed ‘Plym Chamber’ is rebranding and expanding to reach out to even more businesses across Plymouth and the surrounding area in the coming year. Plympton Chamber, not to be confused with Devon and Plymouth Chamber which is a separate organisation, first became established in 2010. The local community aimed to engage with local business folk who had a common aim and purpose. Stella Goodman - Secretary of Plym Chamber and founding member of Plympton Chamber - wanted to utilise the Plympton Chamber to be able to reach out to more local businesses, especially smaller ones: “Our mission statement is ‘Together we can do so much’ and I still think that’s true today - especially if you’re a sole trader because when you’re working by

yourself, you can be quite isolated. So we thought the Chamber should be reaching out, in particular, to small businesses as collectively we can achieve a lot together.”

Now known as the Plym Chamber which is currently standing at 120 members, the community aims to keep steadily expanding and branching out to even more local businesses and business owners. The decision to rebrand didn’t come overnight. Although they are based in Plympton, Beverley Clarke - a volunteer for Plym Chamber - explains that a lot of their members are based outside of the PL7 area, so there was a need to expand:

“Part of our success has been our breakfast networking meetings. This has enabled the Chamber to grow from 20 people to 120 people. There is obviously a need for small businesses to work together, and it’s just getting bigger and bigger. The majority of our members now are outside of the PL7 area.” The name change will see the launch of the new Plym Chamber VIP Rewards Scheme. These rewards can be obtained by showing commitment to the Chamber and receiving points for doing so for example by bringing a guest along to a Breakfast meeting or by hosting a networking event for the Chamber. By encouraging more guests along they will gain an insight into the opportunities within the Chamber and, hopefully, see the benefits of joining the Plym Chamber. Matthew Bryant - the current Chairman of the Plym Chamber tells us more about how this works:

“It’s a points-based rewards scheme, where points are awarded based on the amount of involvement and interaction with the Chamber, bearing in mind that we are all volunteers organising it, so it is quite a commitment, and therefore the more people and the more members who can contribute and get involved in some way, then the more successful we will be as a group.”

The Plym Chamber currently hosts a number of different meetings. On the second Tuesday of each month they hold their popular Breakfast Meeting at Boringdon Park Golf Club, in addition there is a Talking Tables supper club, with guest speakers, which is held quarterly at Elfordleigh and also their well established Members Mingle, which is an opportunity for businesses to showcase their business at their place of work.

The Plym Chamber caters for all businesses and its membership covers a wide range of different occupations, trades and professions from the business community including lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, builders, plumbers, painters and decorators … the list goes on!

“Before the name change, we felt outside of the breakfast meetings, people were put off joining because they thought the Plympton Chamber was exclusive to Plympton, but we hope that the name change will now help combat that.” Stella explains.

Plym Chamber is an affordable business network with real benefits. “One of the things we’ve always aspired to be is inexpensive.” Stella explains, “Every event that we organise we try and do it cost-effectively. It’s all going to be very affordable.” The current price to join the Plym Chamber as a new member is only a £75 joining fee for an annual membership. After that, if you setup to pay through standing order, the current annual renewal fee stands at only £60 per annum (corporate offers also available). The aim of the Plym Chamber now is to encourage more members to join. Their goal is to hit the 200 members mark within the next year. Matthew Bryant describes the great opportunities that come with being a Plym Chamber member:

“The Breakfast Club really struck me specifically because it’s a good opportunity to share topics of interest.” So you might have a presentation from a member firm on a specific legal topic, you might have a property specialist giving an update on the current housing market, or it could be individual businesses just having a platform to promote their services and their products to other members. And it’s really not easy for small businesses to reach out to the larger community, so it’s a ready-made network for that.”

The aim of the Plym Chamber is to continue to grow and encourage people locally within Devon and Cornwall to join. “To summarise what the chamber has done up until now,” Matthew explains, “ the main aim has been to engage with the local community directly through staging events like “Light up Plympton” in the run up to Christmas whilst engaging with the business community at the same time.” With such a wide range of businesses involved within the Chamber, it is important to cater to the needs of every member. Beverley explains that: “Taking away from what we learn from our Breakfast Meetings, it’s about listening to what our members want, so we can then go forward and deliver things that people may not do as an individual, but collectively as a group they might want to do. There are lots of ideas taking shape going forwards.”

Plym Chamber will be launching on May 1st. If you’re still unsure about why you should get involved with the Plym Chamber, Carolyn Croft - a committee member of Plym Chamber - has a very good reason why: “What’s very good about our Chamber and where it differs from some of the other networking groups, is that we’re quite informal and relaxed, everyone’s very approachable.” The Plym Chamber can help local businesses spread the word of what they do through their community and network, so it would be foolish not to take up the opportunity that is right on your doorstep!

This is the second time that Mr Ali and his team have been shortlisted for the British Curry Awards and Mr Ali knows it won’t be their last because he has a fantastic team behind him. “It’s big thanks to my chef and my staff; they’re really hard working

Mr Moshahid Ali people. It’s a team effort. Like when you’re playing cricket, football, any team sport, no matter what a good player you are, you need the rest of the team there to win. So I believe it’s a team effort to satisfy the customers and it works. I have a great team behind me who are great to work with.” The Best in South West category is shortlisted to only eight restaurants. Shapla Balti has come away with a prestigious certificate that states their title of being one of the best in the South West. Nominations are done anonymously but after building an impressive reputation for himself in the Plympton community, it’s perhaps a bit clearer to see people would choose Mr Ali’s establishment: “The people of Plympton have been very good to us, we’ve been here a while now and we have a nice community here. We’ve seen children come in, grow up and come in with their children!” After being nominated, you are sent an application that you have to fill out to explain why you think you deserve the award. Before the awards ceremony the judges at the British Curry Awards will all make a decision after sending their mystery shopper to investigate: “They will send their mystery shoppers who will come and taste your food, see the service, quality of waiters and how they are presenting themselves.

You never know who they are but sometimes you get a feel for it because you get something like three weeks timeframe in October where they will come in. So I will normally work seven days just to make sure I’m here when they come!” “We found out we were nominated in September time.” Mr Ali tells us, “After that they send you the golden envelope saying “you have been shortlisted”. They will give you a category and then you have to book a table to go. We didn’t win last time, but this time we’re going to do more so we can.” “With hard work, with determination and if you have the willpower I think we can win. I believe that myself and my staff work hard enough to impress our customers.” Mr Ali and his business partner Amirul Islam had a lovely time at the British Curry Awards and are looking forward to next year! Shapla Balti offer authentic Punjabi, Kashmiri, Bengali and Indian Cuisine from their premises based on the Ridgeway, in Plympton. Mr Ali believes his establishment stands above the rest because of all of the hard work that is put in: “I believe that we work very hard. We do our best to satisfy our customers and I believe the reviews that our customers have left on Trip Advisor and word of mouth have given us this edge of where we are at the moment.” Shapla Balti always puts their customers first. “Everyone who comes through that door we want to make sure that their experience is as comfortable as possible, we just want them to come here from home and be able to relax.” Shapla Balti offers a wide range of dishes with a different variety of taste from mild, medium, spicy and hot to suit everyone’s pallete.

Shapla Balti sources their produce both locally and worldwide, so you know you’re getting an authentic Indian dish when you visit this establishment. Some of their signature dishes include the Tandoori Garlic Chilli Chicken and the Lamb Chun Chun which is Mr Ali’s personal favourite! People really enjoy Shapla Balti Cuisine’s food and maybe that’s why they’re always returning for more: “The best meal I’ve had in a long time! The staff are so friendly, especially the owner Mr Ali- you are treated like friends from the second you walk in, nothing is too much hassle!” “The food is amazing, especially the naan breads. Mr Ali is more than happy to give knowledgeable recommendations based on your taste, so you feel confident in trying something new. The menu is great and has so much choice. I’ve already made plans to come back again.” If you’re still not convinced, you can read the rest of their reviews on their Trip Advisor page - but rest assured, there’s definitely a reason that they have been awarded a Certificate of Excellence four years running! Looking to the future of the business, Mr Ali has no plans to leave Plympton. Global Warming is breaking new records every year, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, but it’s not just the rise in temperature that is causing drastic environmental changes.

lobal climate change, has already seen some major effects on the environment. But the shrinking glaciers, rising sea levels and increasing temperature of the Earth are nothing to worry about - right? If the changes to our climate are not on your list of concerns, maybe it’s something you should be adding to it right this moment. Human induced climate change is now the biggest risk facing our planet, surpassing terrorism, nuclear war, and an economic collapse. According to NASA, during the 20th century the Earth’s average temperature has increased by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. This seemingly small change may not sound like a lot, but this unusual event in our planet’s history is having a major impact. Small changes in temperature have meant enormous changes in the environment. An example of this impact can be seen by looking back at the end of the last ice age, at this point the Northeast United States was covered by more than 3,000 feet of ice and average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today.

what causes climate change? There are many factors that contribute towards climate change, but the scientists agree that the main cause is human activity, which they refer to as anthropogenic climate change. The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. The lifestyles humans lead, can change the delicate balance of the natural greenhouse. Throughout the last century, the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). These changes in the natural greenhouse can lead to effects such as the earth becoming warmer. This warming could in turn lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall. This may also have an effect on our ocean temperatures and may partially melt glaciers which could lead to an increase in sea levels. Without a change to our current lifestyles and the slowing down of the current damage being impacted, global warming is likely to be the greatest cause of species extinction in the 21st century. To narrow down the effects more specifically would be an impossible task, so let’s look at some of the different areas:

WILDLIFE Climate change and global warming is the key impact in habitat disruption for different species of wildlife. This means that the ecosystems that animals have spent millions of years adapting to are undergoing some swift and major changes in response to climate change. According to scientists each day around 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct. In response to the changes in their habitats, animals have attempted to move to new areas in order to adapt and survive. Unfortunately with the continuous growth and expansion of the human population many areas that were once suitable for wildlife have now been reconstructed into residential and industrial developments; therefore preventing animals and plants from moving into alternative habitats.

OCEANS The oceans are the largest ‘carbon sinks’ in the world, meaning that they absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide and prevent it from reaching the upper atmosphere. But warmer temperatures means more acidic oceans, which has lead to a number of unfavourable events. The trend in ocean acidification is about 30 times greater than natural variation. This means that many ocean species are unable to properly form their skeletons and shells; it’s also majorly effecting ecosystems such as coral is about 30 times greater than natural variation. Climate change is just one of the issues facing our oceans. The damaging effects caused by the dumping of waste such as chemicals and plastic have also had a detrimental effect on this ecosystem.

Rising temperatures leads to more evaporation, which leads to more moisture in the air and increases the intensity of rainfall; therefore creating floods, storms and even more intense hurricanes in certain regions. These are just some examples of how climate change can and already is affecting our planet.

PLASTIC POLLUTION Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It negatively impacts wildlife, their habitats and humans. Plastics that act as pollutants are categorised into micro-, meso, or macros debris, based on size. Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result, levels of plastic production by humans are high. Large volumes of plastic waste have been shown to be harmful to our environment. In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic. In 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034. A large majority of plastic waste, such as plastic bags, straws, bottles and fishing nets end up in our Oceans. The currents then end up bringing plastic waste to places without human inhabitants. Of the 260 million tons of plastic the world produces each year, about ten per cent ends up in the Ocean, according to a Greenpeace report (Plastic Debris in the World’s Oceans, 2006). Seventy per cent of the mass eventually sinks, damaging life on the seabed. The rest floats in open seas.

Unfortunately, plastic is forever and we currently do not recycle and reuse all our plastic waste. We have become used to using an item and simply throwing it away. The issue with plastic is it will never degrade and go back to nature. After around 700 years it will start photo-degrading and breakdown into mirco particles,. The basic consensus is that over time, the amount of gas that these plastics release increases - this leads to a feedback loop: as the climate changes, the planet gets hotter, the plastic gives off more methane, increasing the rate of climate change - it’s just a neverending circle!

how can i help? There’s so much advice that you can use as a guideline on how to combat climate change, so sometimes it may be hard to figure out where to start.

Make your home energy efficient Our homes contribute a large proportion of the UK’s overall carbon emissions. Over half of home energy is used for heating, so ensuring that your home is well insulated is one of the best steps homeowners can take. Make sure that the walls, roofs and windows are insulated so that you can cut back on heat waste. Another important step would be to switch your energy provider to one who offers renewable energy.

make a change in your diet After fossil fuels, the food industry - in particular, the meat and dairy sector - is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. If cattle were their own nation, they would be the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the US.

get involved Make a big impact by getting involved in local groups who are already taking action to combat climate change. Learn about the communities getting involved - Clean Our Patch is a great example of a local community of dedicated litter pickers getting involved to clean our streets. Clean Our Patch is a city-wide group and although they live in Keyham, they are happy to tackle difficult litter across Plymouth. Clean Our Patch is working closely with local councillors and Plymouth City Council to clean our city. The best way to find out when and where to meet the group is by checking the events on their page (facebook.com/CleanOurPatch/events). Clean Our Patch’s bag count update is 1885.5 bags collected since 5th January 2019, equating to roughly 14 tonnes of litter! There are endless amounts of ways to make a difference, it’s just about educating yourself on the matter and learning more about how to solve and combat climate change.

This doesn’t mean that you need to switch to a vegan or vegetarian diet, simply just cutting down on the amount of meat and dairy products can really help make a difference. According to the Wolrd Resources Institute, by reducing your consumption of animal protein by half, you can cut your diet’s carbon footprint by more than 40%.

WORLD OCEANS DAY: HOW TO DO YOUR BIT FOR THE OCEAN HERE IN PLYMOUTH OM chats to Summer Snell, Public Engagement Host at the National Marine Aquarium and member of the World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council for 2019

n the 8th June, scores of people from across the globe are set to come together in celebration of our Ocean, and thanks to Sir David Attenborough and his immensely popular Blue Planet II, this year it is expected to be a bigger and better occasion than ever before. Shining a spotlight on the plight of our Ocean and the marine life that resides within it, the documentary series has been instrumental in encouraging positive behaviour changes in the general public, and an article in The Metro just last week claimed that the consumption of single-use plastics had fallen by a whopping 53% as a result of the ‘Attenborough effect’. With more people starting to become aware of the issues our Ocean faces, experts at the National Marine Aquarium - an Ocean conservation charity - are hoping that the impact will go beyond the reduction of plastic pollution alone.

CLEAN YOUR LOCAL BEACH The National Marine Aquarium organises local beach cleans throughout the year to help keep our shores clean and free of litter and plastic pollution - and as well as getting members of the public involved, the staff often pop down to nearby Teat’s Hill to do a quick clean-up themselves. “We love it when people come along to our NMA Beach Cleans, and always promote them beforehand on our website and social media channels. “If you can’t make it to an organised event though, then don’t worry – you can still do your bit. Next time you’re down at the beach or near the water, just take a rubbish bag and a pair of gloves with you and pick up any litter you can see. It will only take you five minutes, but if we all did it then we could make a huge difference”

REDUCE YOUR CONSUMPTION OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS One study has found that discarded plastic waste could outweigh fish by 2050 if we don't make changes soon. Plastic breaks down over time and turns into little pieces that don't go away. These small pieces of plastic are everywhere in the ocean and are being consumed by everything from the smallest plankton all the way up to the largest whales. There are lots of easy ways you can cut down your consumption of single-use plastics, from swapping supermarket carrier bags, water bottles and takeaway coffee cups for re-usable versions to investing in a zip-up fabric garment bag to take with you to the dry cleaners. “The important thing is not to get overwhelmed”, says Summer. “It can be disheartening, when you’re trying to cut down, to realise just how much plastic we inadvertently bring into our homes, much of this due to the options available to us in supermarkets. “Going entirely plastic free is difficult but remember that every small change you make will add up to other people’s to make a big difference, and have a really positive impact on our Ocean.”

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

n a world that is continuing to open up to and making a consistent effort to understand those with mental health issues, it’s no surprise that Mental Health Awareness Week is now a firmer fixture on calendars around the UK and beyond. The week is organised by the Mental Health Foundation, and focuses on a major issue each and every year. Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 takes place from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th May 2019. The theme for 2019 is Body Image - how we think and feel about our bodies. In 2018, Mental Health Awareness Week was focused on stress. The Mental Health Foundation explains how “Research has shown that 16 million people experience a mental health problem each year, and stress is a key factor in this.” As part of its attempts to further open dialogue about mental health, the foundation organised a so-called “Curry and Chaat” initiative, where people got together with friends and enjoyed their company over a curry, whilst raising money for good causes.

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE UK Mental health issues affect approximately 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children according to the NHS. In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem - such as anxiety and depression. Mental health problems are a common human experience and they can often be upsetting, confusing and frightening. There are many different types of mental health problems, some of which have the same symptoms as others. The most common mental disorder in the UK is anxiety and depression, with 7.8% of people meeting the criteria for diagnosis. According to the Mental Health Foundation, mixed anxiety and depression has been estimated to cause one-fifth of days lost from work in Britain. Mental health research receives only 5.5% (£115 million) of total UK health research spending. Mental health services in the UK are under a lot of pressure. These services have long waiting times and in some parts of the country, lack specialist services. According to the Mental Health Foundation in the UK, the estimated costs of mental health problems are £70-100 billion each year and account for 4.5% of GDP. Mental health problems are one of the main causes of the burden of disease worldwide. In the UK, they are responsible for the largest burden of disease - 28% of the burden, compared to 16% each for cancer and heart disease . The Guardian revealed that coroners had issued NHS

providers of care with legal warning notices over 271 deaths of mental health patients that occurred in England and Wales between 2012 and 2017 following failings in the treatment they had provided. One of the key elements behind this is due to the understaffing in the NHS, especially in mental health services. Between 2009 and 2017, the number of mental health nurses fell by 13%. The NHS bosses know that they are constrained by serious understaffing, but they are aiming to shorten waiting times and increase access to mental health care for children and adults.

MAINTAINING GOOD MENTAL HEALTH If you or someone you know is suffering from a mental health problem, it is important to make sure that you or your friend/family member are seeking the right advice. It’s not always obvious that someone is experiencing a mental health problem unless they tell you outright, it’s best to respond sensitively to someone who seems troubled. Often it is difficult to know what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health problem, but as soon as you are aware that there’s an issue, it’s important not to wait. Seeking professional help is not always everyone’s first step - as it can be very difficult for someone to accept that they’re suffering from a mental health problem - the best way to help yourself or others who are experiencing problems with their mental health is simply to talk to them. The stigma behind mental health continues to fade, with more and more people seeking professional help and more individuals openly talking about their own mental health experiences. In Time to Change’s attitudes to mental illness 2014 report, they illustrated that attitudes towards mental health problems are continuing to change for the better. The number of people acknowledging that they know someone close to them who has had a mental illness increased from 58% in 2009 to 65% in 2014. 40% of people surveyed said they would be comfortable talking to their employer about mental health problems, although nearly half (48%) said they would feel uncomfortable, showing that there is still some way to go to improve attitudes.

HOW TO ACCESS SUPPORT Mental health services are free on the NHS, but in most cases, you will need a referral from your GP to access - however, some do allow people to refer themselves, this can include services for drug and alcohol problems, as well as psychological therapies (IAPT) services. If you need immediate help, there are services where you can speak to someone right away. If you feel as if you can’t keep yourself safe right now, you can go to any Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department; call 999 and ask for an ambulance to take you there, or ask someone else to call 999 for you or take you to A&E. If you need help urgently but don’t want to go to A&E. there are other places to seek help. Call Samaritans on freephone 116 123 (they’re always open and there to listen), contact your GP and ask for an emergency appointment, contact NHS 111, or contact your local crisis team (CRHT) if you’re under their care. These services are there for those who are struggling to cope with their mental health and know that these options are there are useful for anyone who needs access to support. More information about accessing mental health services can be found on the NHS website. Alternatively, there is also more information on various mental health charity websites that anyone can access. Places such as Mind or the Mental Health Foundation list have guides on their websites that can aid you in finding the right path on your journey. You are not alone and there are people who are willing to stand by you and walk you through every step for as long or as little as you need it.
