Pumpkin picking has become a much-loved autumn tradition, with farms and attractions offering pick-yourown experiences, seasonal trails and family activities throughout October. Part of the appeal is finding a pumpkin that feels individual, so look beyond the biggest in the field and seek out unusual shapes, colours and sizes that can be grouped together at home. Pumpkins don’t have to mean bright orange lanterns and spooky faces. White, green and muted varieties create a more sophisticated autumn display, particularly when mixed with gourds, dried flowers, pinecones, branches and natural foliage. At home, group different-sized pumpkins on a hallway table, fireplace or sideboard, or create a welcoming front-door display with larger pumpkins, lanterns, foliage and a seasonal wreath. Smaller varieties can be arranged around pots of autumn plants, while existing planters can simply be refreshed with seasonal colour.
Pumpkins work just as well outside, dressing patios, porches, garden tables and entrances. Combine them with pots, lanterns and autumn planting, while warm lights and candles can help extend outdoor gatherings into the evening.
For a longer-lasting display, try no-carve decorating. Paint pumpkins in chalky white, sage green, black or metallic shades, add simple patterns, or arrange smaller pumpkins in bowls and along dining tables with candles and foliage. It’s also an easy, less messy activity for younger children. Bring the same autumnal feel to the dining table with natural linen, candles, foliage and small pumpkins. Wooden boards, ceramic serving dishes and warm-toned glassware can add a relaxed, rustic feel without making the setting overtly Halloween.
The display doesn’t have to end with Halloween. Uncarved pumpkins can remain part of your autumn styling well into November, provided they’re still in good condition. When they’re past their best, check local guidance for composting or disposal, removing any candles, paint or decorative materials first. The best autumn displays don’t need to be elaborate. A few pumpkins on the doorstep, a bowl of gourds on the kitchen table or a seasonal wreath can be enough to bring a touch of October into your home. When choosing your pumpkin, think beyond the perfect lantern and consider how it could become part of your autumn décor, creating a warm seasonal feel from the pumpkin patch to the front door. 5

There’s never a good time for a boiler to pack up, but a breakdown is particularly inconvenient when the colder weather arrives. After months of lighter use, heating systems can reveal problems just when you need them most. In this guide, we share some simple checks to help you spot potential problems early and know when to call in a professional. Give your boiler a trial run Don’t wait until the first freezing evening to discover there’s a problem. Switch your heating on before you really need it and let it run for a while. Listen for unusual noises, check that radiators are warming evenly and look out for warning lights or fault codes. Everything you need to carve your own Halloween masterpiece, step by step. 1. Choose Your Pumpkin
5. Draw Your Design
Pick a pumpkin that is firm, evenly shaped and free from soft or damaged areas. A pumpkin with a flat base will be easier to carve and less likely to tip over.
Use a marker to draw your face or design directly onto the pumpkin. Keep the design fairly simple if it’s your first time carving one. Triangular eyes and a wide, jagged smile are classic choices.

Cover your table or work surface with newspaper or a disposable covering. You’ll need a pumpkin, a spoon, a marker, a small sharp knife or pumpkin-carving tool, and a bowl for the seeds and pulp.
Carefully cut along the lines of your design. Push the pieces out from the inside rather than forcing the knife. Take your time, especially around smaller or more detailed areas.
3. Cut Off the Top

Carefully cut a circle around the stem to create a lid. Angle the knife slightly towards the centre as you cut so the lid doesn’t fall inside the pumpkin. Always cut slowly and carefully.
Clean away any remaining pieces of pumpkin and wipe the outside if necessary. Replace the lid and check that your design looks the way you want it to.
4. Remove the Seeds and Pulp

Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp. Scrape the inside until it is reasonably clean. You can save the seeds if you want to roast them later.
Place a battery-powered LED candle or pumpkin light inside. Avoid using a real candle if children or pets are around, as it can create a fire risk. Display your pumpkin for all to enjoy!

Ingredients 8 hot dogs 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry 1 egg, beaten Edible eyes Ketchup or mustard, to serve Method 1: Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas 6. 2: Cut the pastry into thin strips and wrap around each hot dog, leaving a gap for the face.

3: Place on a lined tray, brush with beaten egg and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. 4: Cool slightly, add edible eyes or dots of ketchup/ mustard, and serve warm.
1 tsp vanilla extract 100g plain flour 30g cocoa powder 100g white chocolate 12 candy eyes Method 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas 4 and line a square tin with baking paper. 2: Melt the dark chocolate and butter over a low heat until smooth, then cool slightly. 3: Whisk the sugar, eggs and vanilla, then stir in the chocolate mixture. 4: Sift in the flour and cocoa powder and fold gently until just combined. 5: Pour into the tin and bake for 2530 minutes, until set at the edges but still fudgy in the centre. 6: Cool completely, then cut into small rectangles. 7: Drizzle with melted white chocolate to create mummy bandages. 8: Add candy eyes before the chocolate sets, then leave to set before serving.

2: Heat a little oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook the quesadilla for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden and the cheese has melted. 3: Allow to cool slightly, then use a ghost-shaped cutter to cut out individual quesadillas. 4: Add tiny pieces of black olive for the eyes and mouth. Serve warm with salsa, guacamole or sour cream for dipping.
TOP TIP
If you don’t have a ghost cutter, simply cut the quesadillas into triangles and use a small knife to make spooky ghost shapes.
