Gladiators Storm Back to Defeat Scorpions at the Coliseum
The Plymouth Gladiators continued their winning momentum with an impressive 49-41 victory over the Scunthorpe Scorpions at the Coliseum on Saturday night, producing a superb mid-meeting turnaround before skipper Danny King and birthday boy Scott Nicholls helped guide the Gladiators to another deserved home success.
After a difficult start that saw the visitors edge ahead 14-10 after four heats, Plymouth responded in style with a determined all-round team performance that gradually swung the meeting firmly in the Gladiators’ favour.
A vital 5-1 in Heat 6 from the impressive pairing of King and Joe Thompson levelled the scores at 18-18 and sparked Plymouth into life. Thompson continued his excellent form with a paid 11-point return, while King’s experience proved crucial in the key stages of the meeting.
The decisive spell came in Heats 9 and 10 as the Gladiators turned a tied meeting into an eight-point lead.
Nicholls then produced one of the standout rides of the
evening in Heat 11. After initially being shuffled back by the Scorpions pairing, the experienced former British Champion fought aggressively back into second place before launching a determined chase after Pickering in what proved to be one of the most entertaining races of the night.
Appropriately, Nicholls completed the job in Heat 15 on his birthday evening, taking the win ahead of Pickering while Barker backed up in third place to seal a deserved 49-41 home victory for the Gladiators.
Nicholls top scored for Plymouth with 12 points, backed up brilliantly by Barker’s 11+1 and Thompson’s excellent 10+1 haul, while Bowtell added a valuable 6+1 from his guest appearances as the Gladiators secured another important victory in front of their home fans.
Team manager Garry May praised the efforts of the entire side after the meeting, particularly the way the Gladiators responded after a difficult opening spell.
“Yeah, it went well tonight,” he said. “We started struggling getting out of the gates, and then it all sort of came
together at the end. We had a couple of 5-1s, but all the boys dug deep tonight.
There was also an encouraging display from Anze Grmek, who continues to adapt to British conditions and the unique demands of the Coliseum circuit.
“Yeah, it was alright. I like the track,” Grmek said. “I need to get used to the track a little bit.
“Need to find the right setup. I think I tried my best for sure. The speed was good. The speed was there, but I had no start, so we need to fix the gating.”
Despite the difficulties, the Slovenian youngster remained upbeat after gaining valuable experience around the Coliseum in challenging conditions.
Grmek also stayed out after the meeting for additional practice laps to better understand how the bike and engine were performing around the circuit. Those laps helped reveal an issue with the engine itself, which has since been removed from the bike and sent away for further inspection.
More Than a Pet Shop: The Community Spirit of Bella's Pet Supplies
Bella's Pet Supplies rst opened its doors in March 1999, founded by Keren Delamare and named after her beloved dog, Bella. Following her retirement, Keren wanted to ensure that one thing remained constant: the shop's commitment to serving local pet owners with genuine care, expert advice and a personal touch that is increasingly rare in today's retail landscape.
The latest custodian of Bella's is Nicki Milburn, who officially took ownership of the business on 23 December 2025. After spending 25 years working as a veterinary nurse, Nicki witnessed first-hand the changing nature of the veterinary industry, with many independent practices becoming part of larger corporate groups. While this brought some benefits, she often felt that the personal relationships between pet owners and professionals were becoming harder to maintain.
"Bella's is more than just a pet supplies shop; it's a real community hub."
When asked about her long-term ambitions for the business, her answer is immediate.
When the opportunity to become involved with Bella's arose, Nicki describes it as a genuine "this is it" moment. Although naturally nervous at first, the transition period working alongside Keren quickly put her at ease and confirmed that she was making the right decision.
Since taking over, Nicki has continued to build upon the welcoming atmosphere that has made Bella's such a popular destination for Plymouth's pet-owning community. Regular customers visit not only for the extensive range of products but also for the friendly conversations, expert guidance and familiar faces that greet them whenever they walk through the door.
Alongside running the shop, Nicki also operates a small clinic where she can assist with nail clipping, ear care and other minor pet health concerns. Drawing upon her decades of veterinary nursing experience, she is able to provide practical support and reassurance for owners who may be unsure about the best course of action for their pets.
"In a world of increasing industrialisation and growing corporate control, Bella's will remain Bella's," says Nicki. "It's important that people feel the store is moving with the times, but also that it doesn't lose what makes it special."
For Nicki, Bella's Pet Supplies is far more than a retail business.
"It's the best thing I've ever done,"
she says.
"Whatever happens in this shop, it's got to keep that personal side to it." That personal approach is evident from the moment customers walk through the door. While large chain stores may offer convenience, Bella's offers something much harder to replicate: genuine relationships. During our visit, a returning customer entered the shop and Nicki immediately remembered what they had purchased previously. With another customer, her first question was simple: "Do you want to have a bit of a nosey around, or are you looking for something in particular?"
It perfectly summed up the philosophy behind Bella's. Every customer is welcomed as an individual, not simply as another transaction. It is this level of care that keeps people returning time and again.
Another major attraction is the shop's carefully selected range of pet food. Bella's stocks brands such as Nature's Way and Canagan, products that are often only available through independent retailers rather than major national chains. Nature's Way, in particular, has long been a popular choice among Bella's customers and is a local brand originating from Tiverton.

Nicki is determined to expand carefully and sustainably, ensuring that the qualities which have made Bella's successful for more than a quarter of a century are never lost. Heat the oil in a large shallow casserole or frying pan. Add the chicken and fry for 5 mins over a medium heat until golden all over. Remove and set aside on a plate.

Put the onion and peppers in the same pan and fry over a medium heat for 8-10 mins. Add the garlic, dried herbs and spices and cook for 1 min. Add the tomato purée and cook for 2 mins. Returnthe chicken to the pan andpour in the cream, stirring to combine. Season to taste.

Cook the pasta following pack instructions, then drain and reserve 150ml of the cooking water. Add the pasta to the pan with 50ml of the water and stir everything together over the heat. Add a little more water to loosen if needed. Season to taste and stir through the parsley. Divide between six bowls and top with a little cheese and extra chopped parsley, if you like. This can be packed into a lunchbox and eaten cold, too.

1 onion (thinly sliced)
1 red pepper (deseeded and sliced)
1 yellow pepper (deseeded and sliced)
3 tbsp tomato purée
80ml double cream
350g penne (or rigatoni pasta)
1 garlic clove (crushed)
1⁄4 tsp chilli powder
1 heaped tsp sweet smoked paprika
1⁄2 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground coriander
1⁄2 tsp ground cumin
1⁄2 small bunch of flat-leaf parsley (finely chopped) grated parmesan or cheddar

2 large egg whites 120g caster sugar 500g strawberries
1 tbsp icing sugar
Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas 1 and line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl using an electric whisk or tabletop mixer until they reach stiff peaks, then add the sugar in 3 lots, re-whisking to stiff peaks every time. Spoon dollops of the mixture onto the baking parchment, cook on the bottom shelf of the oven for 1hr – 1hr15 mins until the meringues are completely hard and come off the paper easily. Leave to cool.

Blitz 1/3 of the strawberries to make a strawberry sauce. In a large bowl whisk the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Roughly crush ¾ of the meringues and tip them in with the chopped strawberries and stir, then swirl through the strawberry sauce. Dollop into bowls then crush the remaining meringues, sprinkling the pieces over the top.
