Few places in the UK can rival the stunning coastline found across Devon and Cornwall. From sweeping sandy bays and hidden coves to dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters, some of Britain's most beautiful beaches are within easy reach of Plymouth.
Whether you're planning a family day by the sea, searching for the perfect surf, or simply looking to soak up the scenery this summer, these coastal gems offer something for everyone. Here are some of our favourite beaches to visit across the South West.
Stretching for nearly three miles along the North Devon coast, Woolacombe Beach is often ranked among the best beaches in Britain. Tucked away on Cornwall's dramatic south coast, Porthcurno Beach is one of the UK's most breathtaking coastal gems. With soft white sands, crystal-clear turquoise waters and towering granite cliffs.
Kynance Cove looks almost too perfect to be real. With its striking rock formations, vivid turquoise sea and soft white sand, it's one of Cornwall's most photographed beaches.
A favourite among surfers and families, Polzeath Beach offers a wide expanse of sand and excellent waves on Cornwall's north coast.
Not far from Dartmouth you’ll find Blackpool Sands, a sheltered crescent of fine shingle backed by evergreen woodland. Despite its name, the beach is beautifully clear and calm, often compared to Mediterranean coves thanks to its turquoise water and peaceful setting. It’s almost mid-summer which means hot weather and hot dogs. We have gathered together the best tips to keep your dog cool this summer along with what to do if you find a dog in a hot car.
Dogs love spending time outdoors during the summer months, but unlike humans, they can struggle to cope with rising temperatures. Dogs have very limited ability to sweat, meaning they cannot cool themselves down as effectively as we can. While the average human body temperature is around 37°C, a dog's normal body temperature sits between 38°C and 39°C, meaning they are already running hotter than we are before the warm weather even begins.
To regulate their temperature, dogs rely primarily on panting. This process allows them to expel warm air from their lungs and replace it with cooler air from their surroundings. They will also seek out cool surfaces such as tiles, concrete or shaded ground to help transfer excess body heat away from their bodies.
One of the greatest dangers to dogs during the summer is being left inside a vehicle. Even on a relatively mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise dramatically within minutes. When a dog is trapped inside a hot vehicle, the air they need to cool themselves becomes increasingly warm, making panting far less effective. Soft furnishings and interior surfaces absorb heat quickly, creating an environment that can become life-threatening in a very short period of time.
As a general guide, dogs should never be left unattended in a car during warm weather. If you need to run errands, consider leaving your dog safely at home or with a family member. If your dog must travel with you, ensure the
vehicle remains well-ventilated and airconditioned whenever possible.
If you see a dog showing signs of distress in a hot vehicle, contact the police by dialling 999. Symptoms can worsen rapidly, so acting quickly is essential.
Heatstroke is a serious medical emergency and can be fatal if left untreated. Watch out for the following symptoms:
• Heavy or excessive panting
• Rapid heartbeat or pulse
• Excessive drooling
• Glazed or unfocused eyes
• Lack of coordination
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness or collapse
• Loss of consciousness
If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them immediately to

Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, clean drinking water, particularly during periods of warm weather. If you're planning a day out, take a portable water bottle and travel bowl so your dog can drink regularly throughout the day.
At home, check water bowls frequently, as dogs tend to drink
significantly more during hot weather. It is easy for bowls to become empty without owners noticing.
When exercising your dog during the summer, avoid the hottest part of the day. Early morning and late evening walks are usually far more comfortable and safer. Choose routes that provide plenty of shade, such as woodland paths, and where possible, allow access to natural water sources such as streams, rivers or beaches.
Many dogs enjoy cooling down in paddling pools, sprinklers or shallow water. Keeping a paddling pool in a shaded area can provide hours of fun while helping your dog stay comfortable.
If your dog becomes particularly warm, gently pouring cool or tepid water over them can help lower their body temperature. Avoid using icecold water, as a sudden temperature change can cause shock and discomfort. Long-haired dogs should be gently towel-dried afterwards, as waterlogged coats can sometimes trap heat rather than release it.

Heat the oil in a large shallow casserole or frying pan. Add the chicken and fry for 5 mins over a medium heat until golden all over. Remove and set aside on a plate.
Put the onion and peppers in the same pan and fry over a medium heat for 8-10 mins. Add the garlic, dried herbs and spices and cook for 1 min. Add the tomato purée and cook for 2 mins. Returnthe chicken to the pan andpour in the cream, stirring to combine. Season to taste.
Cook the pasta following pack instructions, then drain and reserve 150ml of the cooking water. Add the pasta to the pan with 50ml of the water and stir everything together over the heat. Add a little more water to loosen if needed. Season to taste and stir through the parsley. Divide between six bowls and top with a little cheese and extra chopped parsley, if you like. This can be packed into a lunchbox and eaten cold, too.
2 tbsp olive oil
2 large skinless chicken breasts cut into strips
1 onion (thinly sliced)
1 red pepper (deseeded and sliced)
1 yellow pepper (deseeded and sliced)
3 tbsp tomato purée
80ml double cream
350g penne (or rigatoni pasta)
1 garlic clove (crushed)
1⁄4 tsp chilli powder
1 heaped tsp sweet smoked paprika
1⁄2 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground coriander
1⁄2 tsp ground cumin
1⁄2 small bunch of flat-leaf parsley (finely chopped) grated parmesan or cheddar
Method:
Step 1
Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas 1 and line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl using an electric whisk or tabletop mixer until they reach stiff peaks, then add the sugar in 3 lots, re-whisking to stiff peaks every time. Spoon dollops of the mixture onto the baking parchment, cook on the bottom shelf of the oven for 1hr – 1hr15 mins until the meringues are completely hard and come off the paper easily. Leave to cool.

Blitz 1/3 of the strawberries to make a strawberry sauce. In a large bowl whisk the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Roughly crush ¾ of the meringues and tip them in with the chopped strawberries and stir, then swirl through the strawberry sauce. Dollop into bowls then crush the remaining meringues, sprinkling the pieces over the top.
