Last month, we said goodbye to the lovely Nimra as she departed to begin her new adventure at University. The team at Oracle wishes her the best of luck for the next chapter! I am delighted to be taking over the position of Interim Editor during this exciting time for the brand new, revamped and modernised Oracle Magazine. I’m looking forward to continue offering our readers information about the best events in Plymouth and the surrounding area, various fantastic features and offers, the biggest upcoming films and much, much more. June Jones is soon to hit her 10th anniversary as a consultant for Slimming World and over the years has helped thousands of members lose weight. How to Think Like a Slim Person

When you think about losing excess weight your mind can work against you. Whether it’s thoughts of all the times you’ve tried and failed, or perhaps you’ve succeeded and then put it all back on. You may think off all those delicious treats you’ll be missing – cakes, chocolate or pastries. Or you could imagine all the hard work it’s going to be to fit exercising into your busy life.
T
hese thoughts, and many more, are obscuring the real challenge, your identity. Weight problems are compartmentalised so that you see the little details and hope to change those without changing how you think about yourself and the first step to doing this is to listen to the beliefs you have:
‘It runs in the family’ ‘I just can’t resist chocolate’ ‘It’s my age’ ‘I have a slow metabolism’ ‘I’m too busy to exercise’ These are just some of the reasons you may give for being overweight. If you stop to analyse them they are really only excuses you are using to allow you to continue to hold on to a particular identity you feel comfortable with. Change is seen as a stressful process. So how do we make change easier? Instead of focusing on the result you want – that you look slimmer, or the actions you take – to eat less and exercise more, you must focus on becoming the sort of person who is slim.
Your identity is tied to the beliefs you have about yourself and those beliefs are built by experiences that confirm them. For instance, if you see yourself as intelligent it may be because you did well in school, found it easy to pass exams and were told by others that you were clever. So to see yourself as the sort of person who is slim you start by modelling a slim person and every small win begins to confirm that new identity. Modelling entails taking on the beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours of the type of person you want to identify with. So if you want to become a slim person you need to model a slim person, rather than an overweight person who has lost weight – a subtle but important difference. The trick is not to spend the rest of your life trying to be an overweight person who has lost weight, and so continually struggling to fight cravings or overeating, worrying about calories or fat content. Some people who have lost weight do become ‘slim people’ but many will always have a mindset which will keep them in that struggle.

Jeanette Roberts moved to Plymouth 20 years ago to study Law at Plymouth University and having worked as a paralegal then trainee solicitor, she qualified as a Solicitor in 2005. After working for a law firm as a Private Client Solicitor Jeanette left private practice in 2009 to set up FirstCare on the November 4th of 2009.

s a single parent and in the middle of a recession, Jeanette knew that by setting up a company she was taking a massive gamble. However, Jeanette strongly felt that there was a real need for advocacy services in the South West, as she was aware that there were very few advocates that specialised in later life care issues around to meet that need. As a non-practising solicitor with a background in private client work, she specialises in care of the elderly and vulnerable, assisting clients not only in the South West but around England and Wales with requests, reviews and appeals relating to NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding and Local Authority Social Care Needs Assessments. After a heart breaking personal family experience in the early 1990s, her mission was to make sure that no other family went through the same experience. The main aim of FirstCare is to promote independence in order to prevent and/or delay older or vulnerable people going into a care home, as most people want to remain in their own home in their twilight years. Following the Care Act 2014 coming into force on 1 April 2015, there now exists a legal obligation on Local Authorities to assess service users even if they will be funding their care themselves as they have assets over £23,250. Further, Local Authorities now have a duty to assess the carer’s needs too. Due to budgetary constraints however, Jeanette has noted that these assessments are not being undertaken or do not reflect the person’s care needs. The Local Authority, when carrying out its social care assessments, should refer anyone who has health care needs to the NHS so that they can be assessed to ascertain if they are eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. This funding is different to social care funding as it is not means tested and free at the point of delivery. As a consequence of people not being aware

that they may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, it has been estimated that there are a substantial number of people in England and Wales who are unecessarily paying for care fees, currently residing in both residential and nursing care homes. Care fees can cost from £26,000.00 to £50,000.00 per year and more in some cases where care needs are particularly complex. If they had been fully assessed, they may have been eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Jeanette carries out these assessments in terms of not just the funding, but also looking into what else the client may need to ensure their care is correct and appropriate, focussing on person-centred care and a person’s rights as a human being. There are cases in which the NHS will follow an improper discharge procedure when someone is deemed by the hospital to be ‘bed blocking’. If the patient is sent out too early without a sufficient care package, there is a risk that they may be re-admitted, costing the NHS more money in the long run. Jeanette also attends hospital discharges to ensure that the process is open and transparent. If the person requires ongoing care after discharge, an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment is carried out prior to discharge so that funding for the appropriate package of care is put in place, ready for when they are discharged.
“Putting your care first” The FirstCare team consists of 3 people, including an office and case manager and a benefits adviser, plus consultants that are used depending on their expertise. Jeanette also works with many Independent Financial Advisors and Solicitors as well as taking on direct referrals from clients. Jeanette is also a member of Solicitors for the Elderly and shares their strong ethos which aims to provide expert advice to older people on all aspects of law relating to them, be it Lasting Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection issues, mental capacity, as well as NHS Continuing Healthcare and Local Authority funding issues. With 14 year’s experience advising on elderly care issues, Jeanette is a highly respected Advocate, not only in the South

West but across the country. Over the past months she has been busy speaking at seminars around the South West with an independent and privately owned financial services group. In October she will be speaking again at The Law Society on The Care Act and NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Initially, First Care was to be a South West firm, however due to unprecedented demand and a shortage of expert advocates, the decision was made to represent clients nationally. FirstCare has represented clients all over England and Wales including Bristol, Cardiff, Somerset, Southampton, Birmingham and Cornwall, by referring the case onto one of their mentored trustees, representing and advising them remotely. Jeanette has further provided advice to expats who reside in Abu Dhabi and Dubai but have ageing parents over in the UK, and she hopes to also extend her services to Barcelona where her daughter resides. All Roads Lead To Dartmoor Within minutes the skies morph from bleak and windswept, foggy and damp to bright and crisp - Dartmoor’s infamous fickle weather can bring all four seasons to our doorstep in one day. At more than 368 square miles, Dartmoor National Park is one of the largest and wildest areas of open county in the South of England. With it’s ancient woodlands, high granite tors and vast tracks of rolling woodland, Dartmoor may as well have been plucked right out of a fairy tale. Dartmoor offers so much to do and see over its vast landscape. It is the perfect place to enjoy wild open spaces, dramatic tors and wooded valleys, rushing rivers and wildlife as well as the wonderful towns and villages. Read on to find out some of the best places in Dartmoor to spend your time in this last month of summer.
By Nimra Imran Castle Drogo to Fingle Gorge: This two hour round trip takes you past a dramatic castle and through an oak lined gorge to an ancient stone bridge and traditional pubs - some of the classic Dartmoor sights. The hike along the river Teign starts at Castle Drogo, a fortress completed in 1930 and the last great castle to be built in England. From here the routes to Fingle Gorge are clearly signed. Hound Tor: The jumble of boulders that make up Hound Tor provide one of the most easily accessible and expansive viewpoints in Dartmoor. Supposedly the inspiration for Connon Doyle’s Moorland classic, the Hound of Baskervilles, the tor is a gentle half mile walk from it’s carpark along grassy paths and dells. Look out for the letter boxes, grown up treasure trails - hidden between

the crevices. At the top, you can see the rough peaks of several other tors, as well as Wildcombe in the Moor and Bowman’s Nose. To the southeast of the tor are the remains of a medieval village.
Dartmoor Prison: The Mad Axeman, Frank Mitchell, and the Acid Bath Murderer were both inmates at this granite prison in the mist wreathed town of Princetown. Once a byword for the most violent crimes, Dartmoor - now Category C has a museum for the for the macabre minded, featuring makeshift weapons and

Haytor consists of two distinct tors; the highest, the first tor you reach, can be climbed using steps and grab irons whilst the lower tor is more of a challenge. From the summit rocks of Holwell Tor from where there is an excellent view of Becka Brook Valley and the surrounding countryside.

Its fortunes were founded on cloth and mining; it is one of Dartmoor’s four stannary towns where tin was brought to be taxed. Bovey Castle:
There is something to interest all at Canonteign, children and adults alike will enjoy the ambience and the experience that is unique to this special attraction. Canonteign Falls is a magnificent example of a Victorian folly set in a magical natural paradise. The waterfalls themselves descend for over seventy miles, making this one of the most breathtaking attractions in Devon and providing a wonderful day out for all the family.
Ashburton:
What Bovey Castle lacks in heritage (it is actually not a castle at all) it makes up for it in its breadth of facilities and superb views. Set on a private sporting estate, it has an eighteen hole championship golf course, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, fly fishing lake, croquet lawn, children’s play ground and an archery arena. Bovey Castle is popular with families but still large enough for couples to find a cosy corner. Huge stone fireplaces, ornate panelling and squishy sofas make it one of the most comfortable places in Dartmoor to while away an afternoon playing backgammon or reading the Sunday paper.
Canonteign, home of England’s Highest Waterfall (220ft), is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a breathtaking mix of waterfalls, lakes and cascades, surrounded by a spectacular rock formations in a magnificent woodland setting.

Lydford Gorge: The combination of unique geology, water and climate change has fashioned the deepest river gorge in the South West, providing a truly breathtaking experience which has been enjoyed since Victorian times. You can explore the gorge with a choice of adventurous walks from one to three miles. Throughout the seasons there is an abundance of wildlife and plants to see, from woodland birds to wild garlic in the spring and fungi in the autumn. There are car parks and tea rooms at either end of the gorge. There are a range of events planned throughout the year. With strenuous walking, rugged terrain and vertical drops, this adventure is not for the faint of heart.
Haytor: Haytor is probably the most visited tor on Dartmoor - its huge granite mass is and has been depicted on numerous postcards, sketches, paintings and photographs. It is perhaps the most visited tor on Dartmoor - this is not only due to the fact it is highly accessible but also because of the gigantic masses of rock which crown its summit, the largest piles, which taken as a whole upon the moor are unmistakable.

Lemon Drizzle Scones Ingredients
• 250g self-raising flour, plus a little extra for dusting • 50g butter, chilled and cut in small pieces, plus extra for greasing • 25g golden caster sugar • zest 2 lemons • 125ml buttermilk • 4 tbsp full-fat milk • 3 tbsp icing sugar • zest 1 lemon, plus a little lemon juice • 4 white sugar cubes, crushed, or 1 tbsp preserving sugar • clotted cream and jam, to serve
Method
1.
Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 6 and grease a large baking tray. In a large bowl, rub the flour, 1⁄4 tsp salt and the butter together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the caster sugar and lemon zest, and stir with a cutlery knife. Mix together the buttermilk and milk. Make a well in the centre of the flour mix and add the liquid. Use your cutlery knife to combine the mixture as a soft dough, but don’t overmix or the scones will be heavy.

Tip onto your work surface and pat the dough out to a 2.5cm thickness. Use a 7cm cookie cutter to stamp out the scones. Don’t twist as you cut, as this will stop the scones rising to their full potential. Any scraps of dough can be gently pushed back together to make more scones. Place the scones on the baking tray and bake for 10-12 mins until golden, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Mix the icing sugar with enough lemon juice to make a thick but runny icing. Drizzle over the scones, then scatter with the crushed sugar cubes and lemon zest. Leave to set for 10 mins, then enjoy with clotted cream and jam.

By Alexandra Boardman Alexandra Boardman, a Chartered Legal Executive with The Family Law Company in Plymouth, explores the truth about domestic abuse. What is domestic abuse? Domestic Abuse is defined as: any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional This seems really vague - why isn’t it just violence? I answer questions like this every day when considering whether someone is being subjected to abusive behaviour. There seems to be an acceptance that violence within a relationship may be domestic abuse, whereas shouting, intimidation, put downs, swearing and threatening behaviour, are not, because they don’t amount to actual physical harm. The definition is wide because often there is not one particular behaviour that causes the harm, but a range of behaviours together that leads to a person feeling frightened. When I was growing up there was no such thing as ‘domestic abuse’. Why is it so important now? Research shows that children exposed to abusive behaviours are significantly affected by what they see and hear, and that where children are caught in the middle of disputes between adults, this can have a detrimental impact on their ability to thrive and achieve. We all learn from the environment in which we live, the way people treat us, what they say to us and how they talk about others. This all affects our perception of the world we live in. It is no different for children. If we provide them with an environment of love, security, fun and boundaries, they will grow
up understanding the importance of all of these things. If they grow up in a household of arguments, upset, violence, fear and negativity, they are unlikely to reach their best potential. If domestic abuse is so bad, should the abusive person be excluded from their children’s lives? When deciding what is in a child’s best interest the court considers the needs of the child as paramount. Each family’s circumstances are different and a child may not continue to be at risk of ongoing domestic abuse once the parents have separated. The courts look at various options. Parents may be asked to attend courses such as the ‘Freedom Programme’ for victims of domestic abuse or ‘Building Better Relationships’ for parents who are perceived to have been abusive within their relationship. Both parents may be required to attend a ‘Separated Parents Information Programme’, which helps them understand from a child’s point of view what it is like to be in the middle of disagreements between parents. Other parents may need support through a Children’s Centre, parenting course or one to one therapy with a specialist organisation. How does the court process help parents? The court process gives parents the ability to seek an order they can rely upon and is often the starting point for future arrangements. Often after a relationship has broken down, one parent feels unable to trust the other, especially where the separation has not been amicable. The court hopes that through the process the parents will be able to reach an agreement between themselves for their

children. If this is not possible then the court will impose an order. Through this process, the court will also be able to consider the allegations of domestic abuse and consider whether any further investigations or a court determination of the allegations is necessary prior to any final decision or agreement being reached. Is domestic abuse something that happens just between couples? Domestic abuse can take place within the family or wider family dynamic – for example grandchildren towards grandparents and children towards their parents as well as the other way around. The victim must be 16 years or over to make an application to the court in their own right, otherwise, the parent or guardian of the victim needs to make the application. The court can provide protection through various orders including Children Act proceedings or standalone applications, for example for a Non-Molestation order. The type of order necessary will depend on the behaviour being complained about, who the victim is and why they are seeking the protection. What is Refurnish? Refurnish is a Devon charity that collects unwanted furniture, electrical goods and other household items that are in a good, reusable condition and sells them to onto those that appreciate the environmental benefits of reusing household goods that may otherwise go to waste, or simply want to buy at affordable prices. We offer special discounts to pensioners and people who are in receipt of means tested benefits, but you don’t have to be on benefits to buy from our shops - our shops are open to all. All electrical items are functioning and safety tested. We currently only carry out minor repairs of furniture, although we hope to do more in the future. In addition to reducing waste and helping to alleviate poverty by providing low cost goods to people on low incomes, we provide volunteering,

training and employment for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs.

DRONES: SHAPING THE FUTURE By Harriet McClure
Online retail platform Amazon claims that it will have delivery drones flying to our front doors within the next five years. Drones, or UAVs, could even go as far as saving our planet. The possibilities are endless...
Drones, otherwise known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and remotely piloted aircrafts (RPA), are essentially aircrafts with no pilot onboard. The earliest drones created were for military purposes, first used by the Austrians to attack Venice with 200 unmanned balloons filled with explosives. In more recent times, they have also been used for surveillance purposes, with the CIA flying unarmed drones over Afghanistan since 2000. These sorts of drones are built on an industrial scale with three assumed main purposes: military offensive, military defensive and non-military. However, we at home can buy one even with one simple click of a mouse, as they are available to purchase through online hobbyist drone companies and through Amazon. The commercial drone industry strives to find an alternative name to disassociate it from the military, so the smaller nonmilitary drones are commercially available for personal use and are commonly known as

multicopters, quadcopters or quadrotors. They can range from as little as £30 all the way up to £4,000 and £30,000 - these immense prices were for the larger UAV’s used by the government and armed forces, but can now be purchased by anyone! An example of a drone for beginners costs just $50 (£30) and is protected from crashes with its four-loop style frame. A surprising amount of technology is built into the small, lightweight frame of the drone. Unlike the remote control helicopter, the drone can fly autonomously by self-stabilizing and holding its own GPS-based position. Another difference exists in that drones have multiple rotors to give the user a higher level of control, as more rotors will generate more lift and results in a lesser need for larger-sized blades. The quadcopter, the simplest type of multicopter, controls its roll direction by speeding up two motors on one side and slowing down the other two. Altitude is controlled by speeding up or slowing down all the motors at the same time. A new type of minidrone is soon hitting the market that can jump, glide and roll using its two big wheels. It weighs in at just 1.2 pounds and can take off from the palm of your hand thanks to its built in gyroscope.

In order to be powered, drones rely solely on a lithium battery pack. The average drone battery life is just 10-12 minutes; this is because the battery must be small enough for the aircraft to generate lift. Some extra battery packs are available which can extend flight time to 25 minutes, but does mean the drone will be heavier. Technology has advanced an incredible amount over the past few years, enabling the production of a huge range of drones to hire, or buy, that can assist in many home activities and events. Some drones can have a flight time of up to 40 minutes, depending on four factors: batteries, flight task, wind velocity and the weight of the drone’s carry load. The speed at which drones fly can range up to 31mph. An eightpropeller drone can carry around 2kg - more than enough for a small, 100g light camera - and travel 10km in good weather conditions.
These are just a handful of things the drone can do. The aircrafts are incredibly useful for our planet in many aspects: they can help farmers survey their crops, keep track of the environment by surveying the ozone, put out wildfires, monitor endangered wildlife and transport aid to remote areas. Drones were used to successfully deliver small aid packages to refugees of the Haitian Earthquake in 2010. There are many debates as to what they could be used for in the future; some ideas in fact seem very probable and are already in use, for example weather warning systems, police drones to tackle crime, construction monitoring, advertising drones, personal trainer drones and even finding missing pets. Some types of drones are already being used in today’s society to deliver packages, take photos of real estate listings, cover news reporting and even deliver pizza!
A quick internet search can lead you to easy instructions regarding how to build your own drone, and companies that can teach you to operate and fly it. Drone kits include a controller to control launching, navigating and landing. Controllers can even be set up via a smartphone or tablet, communicating via Wifi and a GPS chip located inside the aircraft. Various on board sensors such as an altimeter, gyroscope, compass and barometric pressure each contribute to pinpointing the drone’s location and keeping it stable in the air against wind speeds of up to 50mph. A flight path can also be programmed in order for the drone to follow the route autonomously.
