After months of lighter use, heating systems can reveal problems just when you need them most. In this guide, we share some simple checks to help you spot potential problems early and know when to call in a professional. Give your boiler a trial run Don’t wait until the first freezing evening to discover there’s a problem. Switch your heating on before you really need it and let it run for a while. Listen for unusual noises, check that radiators are warming evenly and look out for warning lights or fault codes. If something doesn’t seem right, getting it checked early could save you from a breakdown during a cold snap. Keep up with annual servicing A yearly boiler service helps ensure your system is operating safely and efficiently, while giving an engineer the opportunity to identify worn components or potential problems. If your service is due, autumn is a good time to arrange it before the colder months arrive. 12

October brings burnt orange, deep green and golden yellow to the countryside, and nothing says autumn quite like a freshly picked pumpkin. A trip to the pumpkin patch is a lovely seasonal tradition, and the fun can continue at home, with pumpkins, gourds, foliage and flowers adding an autumnal touch to your decorating.

Natural linen, candles, foliage and small pumpkins can instantly make an everyday meal feel more seasonal. 5. Draw Your Design

Pick a pumpkin that is firm, evenly shaped and free from soft or damaged areas. A pumpkin with a flat base will be easier to carve and less likely to tip over.

Use a marker to draw your face or design directly onto the pumpkin. Keep the design fairly simple if it’s your first time carving one. Triangular eyes and a wide, jagged smile are classic choices.

Cover your table or work surface with newspaper or a disposable covering. You’ll need a pumpkin, a spoon, a marker, a small sharp knife or pumpkin-carving tool, and a bowl for the seeds and pulp.

Carefully cut along the lines of your design. Push the pieces out from the inside rather than forcing the knife. Take your time, especially around smaller or more detailed areas.

3. Cut Off the Top

Carefully cut a circle around the stem to create a lid. Angle the knife slightly towards the centre as you cut so the lid doesn’t fall inside the pumpkin. Always cut slowly and carefully.

Clean away any remaining pieces of pumpkin and wipe the outside if necessary. Replace the lid and check that your design looks the way you want it to.

4. Remove the Seeds and Pulp

Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp. Scrape the inside until it is reasonably clean. You can save the seeds if you want to roast them later.

Place a battery-powered LED candle or pumpkin light inside. Avoid using a real candle if children or pets are around, as it can create a fire risk. Display your pumpkin for all to enjoy!

There’s something lovely about Halloween falling in autumn. The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning and there’s a definite chill in the air - the perfect excuse to pull on a jumper, grab your wellies and head outside.

hile it might be tempting to pick up a pumpkin along with the weekly shop, there’s something rather lovely about making the search for one part of the Halloween tradition. As October arrives, pumpkin patches across the region become a sea of orange, green and gold, with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes scattered across the fields. For children especially, choosing one feels like part of the occasion - whether they’re searching for the biggest, wonkiest, funniest or most perfectly round pumpkin they can find. It’s a simple pleasure, but one that turns something you could buy in five minutes at the supermarket into a proper autumn adventure. Pull on wellies, wrap up warm and let the children roam. Make Halloween party food cute, fun and delicious with these easy recipes. From spooky savoury bites to sweet treats, these simple ideas are perfect for a not-too-scary Halloween spread that everyone will enjoy.

Mummy Brownie Bites Makes 12 Ingredients 200g dark chocolate 175g unsalted butter 250g caster sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 100g plain flour 30g cocoa powder 100g white chocolate 12 candy eyes

Method 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas 4. Line a square baking tin with baking paper, making sure the edges are covered. 2: Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Leave to cool slightly. 3: Whisk the sugar, eggs and vanilla together until smooth and slightly creamy, then stir in the melted chocolate mixture. 4: Sift in the flour and cocoa powder and gently fold until just

combined, being careful not to overmix. 5: Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 25-30 minutes, until set around the edges but still slightly fudgy in the centre. 6: Leave to cool completely in the tin, then cut into small rectangles. 7: Melt the white chocolate and drizzle it over the brownies in thin, uneven lines to create the mummy bandages. 8: Add two candy eyes to each brownie while the chocolate is still soft, then leave to set before serving.

8 hot dogs 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry

1 egg, beaten

100g Rice Krispies

Method 1: Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas 6. 2: Unroll the puff pastry and cut into thin strips. 3: Wrap the pastry strips around each hot dog, leaving a small gap for the mummy’s face. 4: Place on a lined baking tray and brush the pastry with beaten egg. 5: Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden and puffed. 6: Allow to cool slightly, then add two small dots of mustard or ketchup for the eyes, or use edible eyes. 7: Serve warm with ketchup for dipping.

If you don’t have a ghost cutter, simply cut the quesadillas into triangles and use a small knife to make spooky ghost shapes.

For extra-crispy mummies, chill the pastry-wrapped hot dogs for 10 minutes before baking. This helps the pastry keep its shape and gives beautifully golden, flaky “bandages”.

Ghost Cheese Quesadillas Makes 6 Ingredients 4 large flour tortillas 150g grated cheddar or mozzarella 1 small red pepper, finely chopped 2 spring onions, sliced

Method 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. 2: Remove from the heat and stir in a few drops of green food colouring. 3: Add the Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. 4: Press firmly into a lined square tin and leave to set for around 30 minutes.

1 tbsp oil

Cover the tops with green icing or melted green chocolate.

Black olives, for decorating

Method 1: Place a tortilla on a board and sprinkle over the cheese, pepper, spring onions and fajita seasoning. Top with another tortilla. 2: Heat a little oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook the quesadilla for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden and the cheese has melted.

6: Add chocolate sprinkles for Frankenstein’s hair and candy eyes. 7: Use black writing icing to draw his eyebrows, scars and stitched mouth. 8: Add a small chocolate button or Rolo to each side as his bolts. 9: Leave to set before serving.
