FAMILY BUSINESS WITH 60 YEARS COMBINED EXPERIENCE
NEIL & JO COOKING UP A STORM! Plymstock couple Neil and Jo Coleman both love to cook. So when local family firm KF Kitchens supplied and installed their beautiful new Nolte kitchen and NEFF appliances this summer, they jumped at the chance to attend one of their cooking demonstrations to discover how to get the very best out of their new cooker and hob.
T
he cooking afternoons at the KF Kitchens Faraday Mill showroom are led by owners Derinda and Nathan Damarell, with Derinda creating a variety of tasty dishes for customers to enjoy, while exhibiting the different features on NEFF’s latest models. Jo and Neil had chosen an oven with added steam, and a venting hob with frying sensor which allows you to set your desired temperature to achieve perfect results. Neil says the cooking demonstration has whetted their appetite to be even more creative in the kitchen: “It was a real eye opener, seeing what you can do and how quickly you can do it. Derinda did a roast lamb joint with potatoes in the steam oven in an hour. She also showed us how we can make toasties and a cake dead easily. On the hob, she did a risotto using the temperature sensor, some halloumi bites on the tepanyaki, and arancini balls.” 6
OMPLYMOUTHMAGAZINE.CO.UK
The food was served to customers with the help of Nathan and Derinda’s family members, including eldest son Connor, who also works with the firm, youngest son Fraser, and Nathan’s sister, Jemma “It was like a dinner party,” says Jo. “There was even prosecco, wine, beer and soft drinks.
tired looking, a lot darker, and with an island that was too big for the size of the kitchen”. They had a good idea of what they wanted - plenty of work surface for food preparation, lots of space to move around, and storage that
“WE’RE DELIGHTED, WE WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING. THIS IS LITERALLY OUR ‘KEEP FOREVER’ KITCHEN. IT’S NOT A HUGE SPACE HERE, BUT WE’VE GOT EVERYTHING WE WANT IN OUR KITCHEN” It was thoroughly enjoyable. We can’t wait to start experimenting, now that we’ve learned how to get the most out of the appliances.” Neil and Jo went to KF Kitchens after visiting other companies who’d been recommended to them. However, KF Kitchens hit all the right buttons from the start. Jo describes their previous kitchen as “quite dated and
would be easy to reach, with an eye to the future. The issue was that the existing kitchen was relatively small: how would they fit everything in? Neil explains: “We initially looked at getting a single storey extension where we could have our dining table, so we’d free up all the existing space for the new kitchen. But that would be very expensive. We even thought about moving, but we

wanted to stay here. One of the changes we did want was to put clear glass into the back door of the kitchen so we could see the views down to the waterfront.” The game changer was when they spoke to Nathan and Derinda: “We didn’t realise it was appointment only and we just rocked up to the showroom unannounced!” says Jo. “At our first meeting, Nathan advised us to go away and ‘scratch that itch’ to think about whether we wanted an extension and then come back, which we did once we’d ruled it out. There was no hard sell. We were given a rough estimate up front and an explanation of their design and install process.” Neil adds: “We told them the list of the things we wanted, and an important piece of advice that Nathan gave us was to focus on the basic footprint at the start and only then consider the details like worktop, kitchen styles and colours, and at the end, the flooring. We had five or six design iterations, and at every stage, they re-costed it and made sure we were happy that everything worked for us.” The result, says Jo, is just what they wanted: “We’re delighted, we wouldn’t change a

firm, Mayflower Stone. The kitchen is completed by a Quooker boiling water tap, Karndean flooring, and a new ceiling. The large island that was there before has been replaced by a peninsula with a seating area with views through the newly glazed back door. Another major change is the use of the right-hand wall which previously had a bookcase and is now an eye-catching block which houses the oven, fridge freezer and larder cupboard.
thing. This is literally our ‘keep forever’ kitchen. It’s not a huge space here, but we’ve got everything we want in our kitchen, and the design makes it look bigger. And the quality and finish of the products is fantastic.” Neil and Jo chose a Nolte kitchen in Sahara anti-fingerprint matt and Artline coffee, with MatrixART manganese bronze handle rails. They chose to not have handles fitted, knowing that there is an option for this later if required. Under and over cabinet lighting was also installed. All the integrated appliances are by NEFF, with a quartz worktop by Plymouth
THE THREE WORDS THEY’D USE TO DESCRIBE THEIR NEW KITCHEN? “PRACTICAL, BEAUTIFUL, EXCITING!”
All the work was done by KF Kitchens’ trusted team of skilled craftsmen, who work closely together: installer Kev, plumber Paul, builder Ernie, electrician James, painter Shaun, Karndean fitter Jason, and waste remover Colin: “They were amazing,” says Jo. “At the start, Nathan came here with all the contractors to talk through everything, and every one of them took such pride in their work.” Neil and Jo are more than happy to recommend KF Kitchens: “They’ve got a wealth of experience, they’re a family business and they and their contractors genuinely care.”

GET YOUR HOME WINTER-READY THIS
Autumn
SMALL SEASONAL IMPROVEMENTS CAN MAKE YOUR HOME WARMER, MORE EFFICIENT AND BETTER PREPARED FOR WINTER. A little preparation in early autumn can make a big difference when colder, wetter weather arrives. Checking the condition of your home now can help reduce heat loss, prevent damp and avoid unexpected repairs later in the year.
S
eptember is an ideal time to prepare your home for colder weather. Tackling essential maintenance, improving energy efficiency and addressing signs of damp now can help prevent costly problems later. From clearing gutters and servicing the boiler to checking insulation and draughts, a few simple steps can make your home warmer, drier and more comfortable throughout winter. Start at the Top Blocked or damaged gutters can cause rainwater to overflow onto exterior walls, leading to penetrating

damp and damaged brickwork. Clearing leaves, moss and debris allows water to drain properly and helps protect the roof and structure of the property. Check roof tiles, flashing, downpipes and exterior walls for visible damage too. Repairing small cracks or loose fittings early can stop water finding its way inside during wetter, windier weather. Look Out for Damp Damp and condensation often become more noticeable when windows remain closed and moisture builds up indoors. Musty smells,
peeling paint, dark patches, mould or persistent condensation can all indicate a problem. Condensation, penetrating damp and rising damp require different treatments, so identifying the cause is important. Better ventilation, external repairs or suitable damp-proofing can protect the property and create a healthier living environment. Plymouth-based Dampbusters South West provides surveys, dampproofing and remediation services for homes and businesses, including solutions for condensation, rising damp, penetrating damp and poor ventilation.
Check Your Heating Arrange a boiler service before temperatures drop to identify potential faults before the system comes under greater pressure. Bleed radiators where necessary, check heating controls and make sure thermostats are working correctly. Insulating exposed pipes and hotwater cylinders can reduce heat loss, while using heating controls efficiently can help manage energy use.
and thermal curtains can all help reduce heat loss. Based in Plymouth, South West Eco Energy helps homeowners improve energy efficiency through loft and cavity-wall insulation, air-source heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage and other renewable energy solutions. Make Small Energy Savings Preparing for winter does not
Homeowners considering a longerterm upgrade may also wish to explore air-source heat pumps, which use heat from the outside air to warm the home. Keep the Warmth In Poor insulation allows heat to escape, making rooms harder and more expensive to keep warm. Check the depth and condition of loft insulation, particularly in older properties where coverage may be inadequate. Cavity-wall insulation may also be suitable, while draught-proofing around doors, windows, letterboxes and loft hatches offers a simple way to improve comfort. Seals, brushes
always require major work. Closing curtains after dark, keeping furniture away from radiators and switching appliances off rather than leaving them on standby can all reduce unnecessary energy use. Thermostatic radiator valves allow individual rooms to be heated more efficiently, while lowering the thermostat slightly may reduce consumption without noticeably affecting comfort. It is also worth reviewing your energy tariff and identifying where improvements could make the biggest difference. Plan Ahead Taking action in September gives homeowners time to arrange repairs before harsher weather arrives and tradespeople become busier. Clearing gutters, treating damp, servicing the heating and improving insulation can reduce the risk of winter emergencies and help keep household costs under control. With the right preparation, your home can stay warm, dry and comfortable throughout the colder months.

YOUR SEPTEMBER HEALTH & WELLBEING ROUND-UP PREPARE FOR FLU SEASON As autumn arrives, so does flu season. The flu virus spreads more easily as people spend more time indoors, making September the ideal time to think about vaccination if you’re eligible. The NHS offers free flu vaccines to older adults, pregnant women, young children, people with certain health conditions and frontline health and care workers. Even if you’re not eligible, good hygiene, regular handwashing and staying home when you’re unwell can help reduce the spread of viruses this winter.
DON’T FORGET TO HYDRATE Cooler weather often means we drink less water, but staying hydrated is just as important in autumn as it is in summer. Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling tired, reduce concentration and trigger headaches. Aim to drink regularly throughout the day, and remember that tea, coffee, milk and sugar-free drinks all contribute towards your daily fluid intake. If you’re exercising or spending time in heated environments, you’ll need even more.
A FRESH START FOR MENTAL WELLBEING September often brings a change in routine as holidays end and work, school and everyday commitments return. While structure can be positive, it can also feel overwhelming. Take time to ease back into routines, prioritise sleep, stay active and make space for things you enjoy. Even a short daily walk, a chat with a friend or ten minutes away from your phone can make a real difference to your mental wellbeing.
29TH SEPTEMBER IS WORLD HEART DAY World Heart day highlights the importance of looking after your heart. Simple habits such as eating well, staying active, not smoking, sleeping well and managing stress can all help reduce your risk of heart disease. Small changes today can make a big difference to your future health.
FAST FACT
Your body is around 60% water. Losing just 2% through dehydration can affect concentration, memory and physical performance, so sip water regularly throughout the day.
LOOK AFTER YOUR EYE HEALTH September is National Eye Health Week, making it the perfect time to book an eye test if you haven’t had one recently. Regular eye examinations don’t just check your vision – they can also detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes and high blood pressure. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight, taking regular screen breaks and eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and omega-3. OMPLYMOUTHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

HEALTH & LEISURE
RESET & RECHARGE
this September
As the seasons change, it’s the perfect opportunity to check in with your health and wellbeing. A few simple lifestyle changes now can help you stay energised, build resilience and head into autumn feeling your best.
S
eptember often feels like a second New Year. The holidays are over, routines return and many of us are ready for a fresh start. Rather than waiting until January, why not use the change in season to reset your health and wellbeing? Small changes to your daily routine can boost energy, improve your mood and help you feel your best as autumn arrives. Move More As the evenings become cooler, now is a great time to try a new way of exercising. Swimming is gentle on the joints while providing a full-body workout, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Plymouth Life Centre offers swimming, fitness classes and a well-equipped gym, while Plympton Swimming Pool and Marjon Sport & Health also provide public swimming sessions and lessons. If you’re over 60 or returning to exercise after a break, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many local gyms offer introductory sessions, qualified personal trainers and programmes designed to build confidence and

TOP TIP
Don’t wait until January. September is the perfect time to reset healthy habits and set yourself one realistic wellbeing goal.
improve strength safely. Plymouth also hosts a range of activities for older adults, including gym introductions, swimming, seated exercise and walking groups. Eat with the Seasons Autumn brings an abundance of nutritious British produce. Fill your shopping basket with apples, pears, blackberries, pumpkins, squash, mushrooms, beetroot and leafy greens. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre to help support your immune system as cold and flu season approaches. Aim to fill at least half your plate with colourful vegetables at mealtimes. Add wholegrains, lean protein and healthy fats to help keep energy levels steady throughout the day.
Prioritise Sleep Getting enough quality sleep is just as important as eating well and exercising. Try to keep a regular bedtime, limit screen time before bed and make your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. A good night’s sleep can improve concentration, mood and overall wellbeing.
A NEW ROUTINE, NOURISHING FOOD AND REGULAR MOVEMENT ARE THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR BEATING THE AUTUMN SLUMP AND FEELING YOUR BEST ALL SEASON. Think About Supplements A balanced diet should always come first, but as daylight hours shorten, many people choose to take a vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter. Vitamin D supports healthy bones, muscles and the immune system, particularly when sunshine is limited. If you’re unsure whether supplements are right for you, speak to your pharmacist or GP before starting anything new.
Set Yourself a Challenge Whether it’s swimming once a week, joining a beginners’ fitness class, walking 8,000 steps a day or trying strength training for the first time, setting a realistic goal can help you stay motivated. Progress doesn’t have to be dramatic- small, consistent habits often lead to the biggest longterm results.
SEPTEMBER REFRESH CHECKLIST
4 Try a new exercise class or swimming session. 4 Fill your plate with colourful seasonal fruit and vegetables. 4 Check whether a vitamin D supplement is suitable for you. 4 Get outside every day, even for a short walk. 4 Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
This September, forget the idea of waiting until New Year. A few healthy changes now can help you feel stronger, healthier and more energised all the way through autumn and beyond.

ith overseas travel becoming increasingly expensive and many families reluctant to leave a much-loved pet behind, there has never been a better time to rediscover the beauty of a UK staycation. For dog owners especially, travelling closer to home means every member of the family can come along. From dramatic clifftops and sandy beaches to picturesque fishing villages, sheltered coves and ancient woodlands, there is always somewhere new to discover. Food lovers can enjoy freshly caught seafood, traditional Cornish pasties and cream teas, while history enthusiasts can explore castles, mining heritage and iconic landmarks
including St Michael’s Mount and Tintagel Castle. With miles of coastline, countryside trails and the South West Coast Path, it is also perfect for walking, cycling and outdoor adventures. As the seasons change, even the smallest outdoor spaces can play an important part in supporting the creatures that share our neighbourhoods.
A
s autumn arrives, local wildlife begins preparing for the colder months. Migrating birds set off for warmer climates while winter visitors arrive on our shores. Hedgehogs search for sheltered places to hibernate, squirrels gather and bury food, and insects retreat into leaves, logs and garden crevices. Gardens can become vital sources of food, water and shelter. Leave seed heads and berry-laden shrubs untouched, allow some fallen leaves to remain beneath hedges and add a log pile in a quiet corner. Bird feeders stocked with seeds, suet or unsalted nuts can provide extra support as natural food becomes scarce, while a shallow dish of fresh water helps both birds and small mammals. Before moving compost, clearing sheds or lighting a bonfire, check carefully for hedgehogs and other animals sheltering inside. Cover open

drains, provide an escape route from ponds and leave a small gap beneath fences so hedgehogs can travel safely between gardens. Avoid pesticides and resist tidying every corner. A slightly wilder garden offers insects somewhere to overwinter and gives birds a valuable source of food. Even a window box planted with autumn flowers can support late-flying bees. For those wanting to support wildlife beyond their own garden, Plymptonbased Working for Wildlife helps raise awareness and vital funds for wildlife and environmental charities, supporting their work to protect nature and the species that depend on it. Small changes can make a real difference, helping local wildlife find the food, shelter and safe passage it needs to survive autumn and winter. survive autumn and winter.
Birds to Spot This Season Redwing
Fieldfare
Goldcrest
Starling
Listen for its thin “tseep” call overhead after dark. This small thrush arrives from Iceland and Scandinavia and is easily recognised by the rusty-red patches beneath its wings. Britain’s smallest bird weighs about the same as a 20p coin. Numbers increase at this time of year as migrants arrive across the North Sea from Scandinavia and Russia.
FOUND A HEDGEHOG?
A hedgehog out after dark is usually best left alone. Offer fresh water and a little meatbased cat or dog food, but never bread or milk. Keep pets away and leave a clear exit. A hedgehog seen during the day may need help, especially if it appears weak, injured or cold. Wearing gloves, place it in a high-sided box with a towel and wrapped warmwater bottle, then contact a wildlife rescue or vet.
Watch for noisy flocks gathering around berrycovered trees and hedges. Its distinctive “chackchack” call often reveals its presence before the bird itself is seen. Resident starlings are joined by birds from northern Europe, forming larger flocks as the season progresses. Look out for their glossy, speckled plumage and spectacular swirling murmurations. 25
