PERSONAL STATEMENT:

Thanks to my parents who own a construction company, I was able to participate in several projects during my growth directly or indirectly, and witness the explosive development of construction industry and the uncontrolled expansion of urban space in China. The blind pursuit of construction speed and scale has led to many projects being rushed into construction under the imperfect urban management, urban operation mode and relevant industry speci昀椀cations. Consequently, lots of buildings have been left un昀椀nished or abandoned, forming uninhabited areas in cities. Moreover, with well-used buildings or landscapes demolished, people are forced to build new areas to meet the demand. Thirdly, the contradiction is exacerbated between the urban space and the living things, which not only causes resource waste, but also leads to no space available for use for various reasons. Therefore, I set out on a mission to strive for the sound development of cities, hoping that the city where I live can become better.

During my daily life and studies, I have noticed that public landscapes in cities are interesting urban space. Taking the High Line in New York as an example, it can accommodate various groups of people inside the space, while contribute to the appreciation of surrounding properties and the readjustment of the focus of urban asset investment. Serving as the public urban space, landscapes play a far-reaching role in urban development, reorienting the development direction of the city and in昀氀uencing the allocation of resources within it. Appropriate utilization of landscape can foster a new driving force for the city. This is exactly the main concept re昀氀ected in the 昀椀rst project of my portfolio, which aims to reactivate the un昀椀nished urban sites with the power of landscape and make the deserted urban space full of vitality again.

Internship experiences in large state-owned enterprises have also exerted great impact on me, especially the one in China Institute of Building Standard Design & Research (CBS). During my internship in CBS, I was given the opportunity to work on the details of regulations on the building of a barrier-free environment in China before they were issued. During that period, I was responsible for sorting out relevant materials, and involved in the design process of some demonstration areas. Thanks to it, I began to pay attention to many aspects that had neglected previously. realized that each part of the design process requires a lot of time for investigation and optimization. Meanwhile, for the barrierfree design, I was expected to accurately grasp the living needs of different people from various perspectives.

In essence, the development of a city is the aggregation and harmonization of various contradictions. These contradictions exist between human activities and the natural ecology, and are also re昀氀ected in the con昀氀ict between the biological adaptation to urban environment and people’s pursuit of spatial order. For instance, the urban sprawl inevitably causes damage to the original ecosystem, with biological habitats being compressed, thus forming the tension between ecology and space utilization. After consulting with my senior alumna who is studying in University of Edinburgh, I have gained a deeper understanding of the curriculum design there. I believe that the systematic study of coping strategies in the course, Terrain & Ecologies, enables students to better understand how topographical features affect the ecological balance and how to mitigate the con昀氀ict between human beings and nature through design. Moreover, the emergence of abandoned spaces re昀氀ects the con昀氀ict between urban expansion and sustainable development. It is expected to 昀椀nd the way to revitalize these spaces with the magic of design. Throughout the course, Ground-Works and Construction Design, students can be equipped with key knowledge of site structure, infrastructure and the whole process of construction, which is conducive to minimizing the con昀氀icts between humans and nature in urban construction, and between the inner space of the city and the needs of its residents.

Although landscape architecture is a complex discipline, I have been exposed to various knowledge such as philosophy, nature, humanities, etc. in the process of learning and designing. I have been greatly fascinated to the process of transforming things into each other, which attracts me to explore more places in the world and inspires me to become a person full of vitality.

Edinburgh boasts fascinating history and culture, as well as stunning scenery, which deeply appeals to me. I am looking forward to embarking on a magical journey of landscape study in the beautiful campus of University of Edinburgh, where I can greatly sharpen my skills in landscape design and develop a deeper understanding of landscape architectural practice. I hope that through the power of my design, the city I live in can carry more joy and people around me could live a better life.
