THE PLAYBOOK | Spring-Summer 2026

Page 1

WELCOME

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

After a very cold start to 2026, spring is just around the corner — and with it comes the latest edition of the City of Pensacola’s Parks and Recreation Playbook. Our Parks and Recreation programs are designed to bring communities together, while promoting health, wellness and connection for all ages. From youth activities to senior programming, we offer opportunities that enhance the quality of life of everyone who calls Pensacola home.

This year, we will continue investing in the spaces that matter most to our community through Direction ’25: Pensacola Parks Revitalization. Launched in 2025, this initiative is a $21.7 million investment focused on enhancing and maintaining parks and facilities throughout the city limits, and it’s the most significant investment in our parks system since 1985. We’re also excited to welcome Tonya Byrd as the Parks and Recreation Director. In her new role, she will help lead the continued implementation of this transformative, multi-year effort to ensure our parks remain vibrant, accessible and welcoming for all.

This spring and summer, we’re offering a wide range of programs, including afterschool activities, Outdoor Pursuits Survival Skills Camp, Spring Break Camp, sports camps, senior programs, summer camp, dance camp and volunteer opportunities.

I encourage everyone to explore this season’s Playbook, participate, and take advantage of the many offerings from our Parks and Recreation Department. I wish you all an active and vibrant spring and season.

Sincerely,

Mayor D.C. Reeves

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Spring is almost here, which often inspires renewed energy in our bodies, minds, and spirits. It’s truly one of the best times to get out and enjoy the abundance of city parks and recreation facilities we have in Pensacola. It’s also a great time to learn new skills like how to kayak at the Bayview Outdoor Pursuits Center, join a line dance class at Fricker Resource Center, or watch

your children play youth sports and see how their confidence grows. There are so many opportunities for fun and learning within this guide that you may not have time to do them all before the summer is over, but we know some of you will try!

As your new Parks and Recreation Director, I want you to know that I consider it an honor to be serving the citizens of Pensacola leading the Parks and Recreation Department. Each day I get to come to work with very skilled and knowledgeable staff who care about delivering services that meet the needs of a growing city while also celebrating our time-honored traditions. I want to thank them for their dedicated care and service to our citizens and visitors.

I also want to thank our most recent leader and Interim Director Kerry “Shans” Shanaghan for

bringing our team closer together while helping us navigate new initiatives that helped set our team up for success going forward. Parks and Recreation is stronger and more resilient than ever before, and we can’t thank him enough for his guidance and leadership.

We started this year with new branding and a new mission statement: Creating community wellness and pride through people, parks, and programs. I invite you to go out and explore all that the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department has to offer this spring and summer!

Sincerely,

PENSACOLA BOWLER HONORED

AS FLORIDA SENIOR GAMES ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Meet Larry Draeger.

Some athletes chase trophies. Others simply love the game so deeply that the trophies follow them home. For Larry, bowling has been a lifelong companion, steady as the polished wood of the lanes and the familiar sound of pins colliding.

On November 30, 2025, Larry was honored as the 2024 Florida Senior Games Male Athlete of the Year, recognizing decades of excellence, perseverance, and passion for competition.

Larry first stepped onto the lanes in 1954 and began competing in leagues and tournaments just two years later. In 1979, his bowling career followed him through a distinguished U.S. Navy service, where he rose to become Navy’s top Master Chief selectee and competed for 18 years in the Navy World Championships, earning five military championship titles.

After retiring from the Navy in 1991, Larry shifted his focus to the Florida Senior Games, qualifying for the state competition every year since. In 2011, he made history by rolling a perfect 300 game, becoming only the second athlete ever to do so in the Florida Senior Games. Today, even with two shoulder replacements, he continues to compete with the same determination that has defined his entire journey.

Larry’s recognition as Athlete of the Year celebrates more than medals. It honors a lifetime of commitment, resilience, and love for the game.

As the Senior Games return this September 2026, athletes like Larry remind us that competition has no age limit and that it’s never too late to chase greatness.

Pensacola looks forward to welcoming participants back to the lanes, fields, and courts for another season of inspiring performances.

LET'S ASK LARRY.

Why do you still compete?

"Because every year the Senior Games feels like a reunion and a revival all at once. I’ve built friendships across the country, and there’s nothing better than reconnecting with old friends while welcoming new ones. Competing in five year age groups keeps the playing field fair, and stepping up to the line each year reminds me that I’ve still got it."

What

are the top mistakes you see new bowlers make?

1. Throwing too hard

2. Trying to curve the ball

3. Breaking courtesy:

you should always wait for the bowler to your right or left to bowl first.

After 2 total shoulder replacements, what advice do you have for someone recovering from an injury?

"Be content where you are, and focus on getting well. Physical therapy is an absolute must. Be patient and give your body and mind time to recover."
