The Notebook (Program Book)

Page 1

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

Your legacy helps create a healthier community.

At University Hospitals, we take our commitment to our community seriously and are grateful for your ongoing support in this rapidly changing world. Together, we’ll continue to treat patients like family, find new treatments and cures, and prepare the next generation of caregivers. Join others who are helping advance the science of health and the art of compassion by leaving their legacy.

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! Playhouse Square is one of Cleveland’s many gems. All of us at Key, Cleveland’s hometown bank, are thrilled that you are enjoying a show in this historic space, one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer.

In 2025, we are celebrating KeyBank’s bicentennial — evidence of our steadfast and enduring 200year commitment to the communities we serve. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive. We are proud to support this artistic treasure and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

For two centuries and counting, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities here in our hometown and in all the communities we are part of.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage, and transformative philanthropy. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.

Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON News

ALICIA KEYS LAUNCHES NONPROFIT FOUNDATION

Grammy Award-winning singer and activist Alicia Keys has officially launched the Kaleidoscope Dreams Foundation, a nonprofit inspired by her Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen. The foundation aims to expand access to the arts and create professional pathways for historically underrepresented communities by partnering with local organizations and supporting cultural, educational, and community initiatives. Central to its mission is the Hell’s Kitchen National Tour Fellowship Program, which offers paid opportunities for emerging artists and organizers to engage in community outreach and audience development. Created and inspired by Keys, Hell’s Kitchen uses her music to tell the story of a young girl navigating first love, family and her dreams of becoming a musician in 1990s New York City. The national tour begins right here at Playhouse Square Oct. 10–Nov. 1, featuring Maya Drake as “Ali,” Kennedy Caughill as “Jersey” and Roz White as “Liza Jane.” Tickets are on sale now at playhousesquare.org.

ANOTHER SHOT TO SEE HAMILTON

Even if you missed Hamilton when it returned to Playhouse Square earlier this year, there’s still a chance to be in the room where it’s happening! This month the movie version of the Tony Award-winning musical — a live capture of the production filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016 and featuring most of the show’s original cast — hits movie theaters nationwide. The movie became available on the streaming platform Disney+ in 2020, but this theatrical release will include some new footage in the form of a prologue called “Reuniting the Revolution,” which pays homage to the show’s 10-year anniversary on Broadway and the show’s impact.

FLYING UP THE CHARTS

In August the Broadway production of Aladdin officially became the 14th longest running show in Broadway history, surpassing the 4,091 performances of Miss Saigon’s 1991–2001 run. Only 13 other shows in Broadway history have had more performances than Aladdin: Jersey Boys, Rent, The Book of Mormon, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia!, the 1976 revival of Oh! Calcutta, A Chorus Line, Les Misérables, Cats, Wicked, The Lion King, the 1996 revival of Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera (holding the top spot with 13,981 performances!). Aladdin has been running at the New Amsterdam Theatre since March 20, 2014, and also boasts 11 additional productions on four continents.

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE LAUNCHES ARTS & MINDS PROGRAMMING

Playhouse Square in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic has launched its new Arts & Minds programming for those with neurological disorders in the Northeast Ohio community. The first initiative within this program — Dance for Parkinson’s — creates space for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and their care partners to engage in meaningful arts experiences. Held in accessible places throughout Playhouse Square’s historic theaters and state-of-the-art spaces, free Dance for Parkinson’s classes are available on a weekly basis and give participants the opportunity to explore movement possibilities and celebrate community. Special events will also be offered throughout the year where participants can experience performances and conversation with artists seen on Playhouse Square stages, along with a Dance for Parkinson’s activity. Playhouse Square’s Dance for Parkinson’s classes are supported by a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation. For more information on Playhouse Square’s Arts & Minds programming, please visit playhousesquare.org/arts-minds.

SOMETHING GOOD IN THE PLAYHOUSE SQUARE DISTRICT

Guests to the Playhouse Square District can enjoy a new dining venue, Something Good Social Kitchen. Co-founded by Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere creator Ricky Smith, the restaurant is open in the kiosk on Playhouse Square Plaza with a menu featuring burgers, hot dogs and fries. And the best part? Every meal purchased helps to feed someone in need or someone deserving. The addition of Something Good Social Kitchen is a part of Playhouse Square’s “Beyond the Stage” initiative, which is designed to enhance the experience of theatergoers and provide a welcoming environment for downtown workers, residents and visitors.

BE IN THE KNOW

Looking to enjoy a meal or drink at a restaurant before a show? Perhaps, learn more about special events in the theater district? Our PSQ District social media channels are great resources for staying up-to-date on what’s happening in the neighborhood. From behindthe-scenes videos at different venues to photos of our dazzling Playhouse Square Chandelier, presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, and exciting giveaways, our @PSQDistrict pages on Instagram and X are here to help guide guests as they explore the area of 14th and Euclid. We also encourage visitors to tag their photos with @PSQDistrict to share their experience with family and friends.

SPOTLIGHT ON Donors

It’s not every day you get to experience the theaters without the hustle and bustle of shows! This past May, Corporate Donor Circle donors who give an annual donation at the Gold Founder level and higher enjoyed a cocktail reception in the Connor Palace followed by private tours of Playhouse Square. In addition to learning the unique history of these century-old theaters, those in attendance were able to explore the areas typically reserved for cast and crew members, including the stages and dressing rooms.

Since load-in began on August 15, Playhouse Square has been buzzing with energy, creativity and collaboration. Over the course of more than six weeks, thousands of hours have been poured into this production by an extraordinary team that includes local professionals — stagehands, truck loaders, wardrobe and hair artists, security guards, housekeepers and so many others whose dedication and expertise make theatrical magic possible.

Beyond the theater walls, hundreds of out-of-town cast, management, creative team and crew members have made Cleveland their temporary home. They’ve explored our neighborhoods, stayed in our hotels and apartments, dined in our restaurants and discovered the rich cultural offerings of our museums, shops and entertainment venues. Their presence has been a vibrant reminder of the role our city plays in the national arts landscape. That The Notebook chose Cleveland to launch its tour is a profound vote of confidence in our audiences, our resources and our talented labor force. We are honored — and proud — to be the starting point for this beautiful journey.

At its heart, The Notebook is a story about love — enduring, complicated, transformative love. Based on the beloved novel by Nicholas Sparks, the musical follows Noah and Allie, two souls from different worlds whose connection defies time, circumstance and memory. Their story is one of passion and resilience, but also of family — how it shapes us, challenges us and ultimately holds us together.

This adaptation brings new emotional depth to the tale through the evocative music and lyrics of Ingrid Michaelson, whose indie-pop sensibility infuses the show with warmth, vulnerability and aching beauty. Bekah Brunstetter, known for her work on This Is Us, has crafted a book that honors the original story while expanding its emotional landscape. Her writing captures the nuances of love across generations, and the quiet heroism of caregiving and commitment.

Together, Michaelson and Brunstetter have created a musical that is both intimate and sweeping, nostalgic and fresh. Under the direction of a visionary creative team led by co-directors Michael Greif and Schele Williams, The Notebook invites us to reflect on our own stories — on the people who have shaped them, the choices that define them and the memories that endure.

As the curtain rises on this national tour, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who made this moment possible — from the crew who built the show from the ground up, to the audiences who fill these seats with anticipation and heart. Cleveland continues to prove that it is not just a stop on the map: It is a destination for world-class theater, a community of passionate supporters and a place where stories come to life.

Enjoy the show. Let it move you, challenge you and remind you of the power of love.

Enjoy,

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

Building Cleveland

The original builder of the Allen and Hanna Theatres — John Gill & Sons Co. — also built Judson Manor (known then as Wade Park Manor), the Federal Reserve Bank and the Terminal Tower.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

Marquees on Display

The Playhouse Square District is shining brighter than ever before with our magnificent marquees and outdoor digital signage. The marquees’ designs were inspired by each historic theater with the ceiling of each marquee capturing ele-

ments from the grand ceiling of its respective theater. The marquees are equipped with localized sound to welcome audiences with thematic soundtracks, as well as sustainable, energy-efficient LED lighting that can complement shows, holidays and other themes. Guests can catch the Marquee Moment presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, every night before entering and leaving their performances at the theaters.

You Can Find Us on YouTube

There’s lots to see on the Playhouse Square YouTube channel: show content; interviews; videos about our education programs and what it’s like to be a RedCoat; documentaries about our history, the re-creation of the Mimi Ohio Gund Foundation Lobby, and our 2021 reopening...and more!

A League of Our Own

Playhouse Square is a member of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. Formed in 1930, members include theater owners and operators, producers, presenters, general managers and suppliers throughout North America.

The Mural Above the Fireplace

Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200. The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.

The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.

Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)

World’s Longest Lobby Explained

In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space.

Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.

What Would It Cost to Build Them Today?

Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the KeyBank State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Mimi Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.) In 1977, it was estimated that it would cost $75 million to recreate the Connor Palace.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

In 1964, the Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.

Re-Creating History

We call the completed Mimi Ohio Theatre George Gund Foundation Lobby project a “re-creation” rather than a restoration. Why? There was nothing left to restore after a 1964 fire destroyed the space. To reproduce the lobby’s original 1921 splendor, architects, restoration specialists and Playhouse Square staff conducted exhaustive research of the original drawings by architect Thomas Lamb, photo archives and a few remaining bits of ornamental plaster detail to gain a thorough understanding of the space and inform the plans for re-creating the lobby.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand?

At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 1.7 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another 1.5 million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.

YPs Take the Lead

Best known as the masterminds behind the annual Jump Back Ball benefit, Playhouse Square’s young professionals group – Partners – was formed in 1991. Since then, hundreds of young professionals engage with Playhouse Square each year to build leadership skills, raise funds and volunteer in support of our not-for-profit mission, enjoy shows together, network and have fun!

Officially Historic

In 1978, Playhouse Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of U.S. historic sites worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
