The Choir of Man (Program Book)

Page 1

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene

Iam incredibly excited to welcome The Choir of Man back to Playhouse Square — a return that carries special meaning for all of us. When this unforgettable show last arrived in Cleveland, it did far more than entertain: It helped reopen Playhouse Square during one of the most challenging moments in our history. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when uncertainty, stress and distance had become a part of daily life, this remarkable show stepped onto our stages and reminded us what community could feel like again.

Some of the performers who are with us this week were part of that special company — quickly earning the nickname “The Boys of Summer.” Their spirit, generosity and immersion into Cleveland left a lasting imprint on our city. Over the course of that run, they brought a breath of fresh air and genuine joy to more than 20,000 theatergoers, even as audiences sat masked and socially distanced. They served beer on six-foot paddles, minimized audience interaction and adjusted nearly every aspect of the theatrical experience. Yet, despite it all, the heart of the show broke through.

What makes The Choir of Man so special is its ability to bring people together — to celebrate the simple, human moments that connect us. Today, I’m thrilled that the show has brought you together again, this time without the barriers that once separated us.

Welcome back to the pub. Welcome back to the music. And welcome back to the joy that this show brings so effortlessly.

TONY AWARDS DATE SET

The date for Broadway’s biggest night is set! The 79th Annual Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The ceremony will be broadcast live coast to coast on CBS from 8–11 p.m. ET, with streaming available on Paramount+, and on-demand viewing for select subscribers the following day. Eligibility for the 2025–2026 Broadway season closes April 26, with nominations to be announced May 5. Additional details for the awards show, including the evening’s host, will be revealed at a later date.

WICKED FILM CO-STARS REUNITE

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will reunite onstage to star in a major London revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Sunday in the Park with George, opening summer 2027. The former Wicked film co-stars will take on the iconic roles of Dot and Georges Seurat in the new production, directed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott (Company). The revival marks Grande’s West End debut. Sunday in the Park with George, a fictionalized take on the inception of the famous “Sunday Afternoon” painting by artist Georges Seurat, originally opened on Broadway in 1984 with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in the starring roles. Tickets for the revival are expected to go on sale this spring.

JERSEY BOYS RETURNS TO THE ROAD

Jersey Boys, the Tony Award–winning musical that charts the rise of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new North American tour! Opening on Broadway in 2005, the international hit musical has taken home 65 major awards and was the 12th longest running show on Broadway when it closed in 2017. Multiple tours also ran between 2006–2022. This latest tour reunites the original Broadway creative team, led by director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. Keep an eye out for casting and full tour route details.

SINATRA THE MUSICAL MAKES WEST END TRANSFER

A new stage musical celebrating the life and music of Frank Sinatra will make its West End debut this summer. Written by two-time Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro (Memphis) and directed and choreographed by three-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes), Sinatra The Musical features more than 20 of Sinatra’s iconic songs and is set on New Year’s Eve 1942, as the young singer prepares for the career-defining performance that launched his stardom. Performances begin in June.

RAISE A GLASS TO THE PLAYHOUSE SQUARE DISTRICT’S NEWEST COCKTAIL BAR

Guests to the Playhouse Square District can add a new location to their list for pre-show or post-show drinks. Encore, a 40-seat cocktail bar, is now open on Tuesdays–Sundays at 1580 Euclid Avenue. The menu features refined cocktails alongside creative bites, each crafted to complement one another. The addition of Encore is a part of Playhouse Square’s “Beyond the Stage” initiative, which is designed to enhance the experience of theatergoers and provide a welcoming environment for downtown workers, residents and visitors.

ARTS & MINDS UPDATE

Playhouse Square is leading Ohio with its arts programming for people with Parkinson’s and receiving international recognition as the organization is the first in the state to obtain certification as a Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate. Playhouse Square is now only one of 23 Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate locations worldwide. Dance for PD® is an internationally recognized program that offers researchbacked dance classes — both in-person and virtual — for people with Parkinson’s disease, and it represents the highest quality of teaching standards and artistry. The certification was pursued and completed by Playhouse Square’s Senior Manager of Neurological Programming Joan Meggitt, who is one of fewer than 50 Dance for PD® Certified Teachers worldwide. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners can register for free weekly classes at Playhouse Square and learn more about the Arts & Minds collaboration with Cleveland Clinic at playhousesquare.org/arts-minds.

SHARE YOUR LOVE FOR PLAYHOUSE SQUARE

Ohio residents can show their passion for Playhouse Square as they hit the road with the new Playhouse Square organizational license plate. All Ohio motorists are eligible to purchase the specialty license plate which features the Playhouse Square burgundy logo. For more information and pricing, please visit bmv.ohio.gov or your local BMV Deputy Registrar License Agency. A portion of the proceeds from these license plates go back to Playhouse Square.

SPOTLIGHT ON Donors

At Playhouse Square, every gift is an invitation — to learn, to connect, and to be moved. When you donate, volunteer, or join an affinity group, you become part of a legacy that preserves our historic theaters while inspiring the next generation of arts lovers.

Susan Szanyi is a lifelong Ohioan with cherished memories at Playhouse Square. As a dedicated member of Leading Ladies, OUT, and Donor Circle, a loyal season ticket holder and, most recently, a fundraiser for our annual Day of Giving, Sue is a true champion for our mission.

“There are so many reasons why I support Playhouse Square. It’s a magical place where people create memories and forge new friendships. It’s an organization with a vision to make the community better through educational programs and diverse entertainment. It’s a collection of beautiful theaters with an amazing history of resilience.”

“I’VE

FROM the creators

GOT AN IDEA FOR A SHOW...”

“I’ve got an idea for a show…”

It’s 2016 and Andrew Kay and I are celebrating the success of a sold-out performance of our latest collaboration when he turned to me and said these fateful words. It was at this moment that The Choir of Man began, and perhaps fittingly, it was over a pint in a beer garden.

Andrew described the genesis of the idea; it’s a group of ordinary blokes who meet up to sing a few songs over a drink or two. It isn’t only about the drinking, nor is it only about the singing. It’s about the simple act of being together. It’s about laughing together, crying together, singing, shouting, talking together… whatever it is, it’s about the pleasure of being in the same place at the same time as the people you love.

“…And,” he said with a twinkle in his eye, “We should call it The Choir of Man.”

And so, an idea was born.

In the time before this conversation, I had worked for the previous twenty or so years of my career as a professional singer, so I knew a bit about singing. Also, having spent a fair amount of time in pubs during the same period, it seemed to me the simplest of ideas to combine the two experiences. It was the perfect fit — both choirs and pubs are environments where you can raise your voices in joy or in sorrow. And they’re both places where it’s more important to listen than it is to shout.

So, we set out to look for normal guys. Men who could sing, play instruments, maybe even move a bit, but most importantly, guys who seemed like they’d be at home in a pub with their mates. Our aim was to create a show about a group of friends who sang together, and we genuinely ended up with a group of friends creating a show together. It’s funny how these things work out.

After three strenuous weeks devising and rehearsing, we presented our show at a venue in Tottenham, North London performing for an audience of friends and family for the first time. We could barely fit in the room we’d hired and ended up having to perform almost on top of the audience, but they loved every minute of it. From

the free beer (of course) to the traditional choral arrangement of “Chandelier” by Sia, everything was lapped up by the crowd. The energy was electric — I’d never experienced anything like it. At the end of the first performance Andrew turned to me and said, “I think you may have something here…”

And we did, and here we are tonight. After Edinburgh, Coventry and Adelaide Fringes, three previous USA national tours, three sold out seasons at the Sydney Opera House, two Cruise ships, European and Australian tours, and an Olivier Award nomination for our West End run we find ourselves here in your city; and it can all be traced back to a pint in a beer garden.

Fitting indeed.

“MUSIC AT ITS CORE”

Jack Blume

Musical Supervisor, Vocal Arranger & Orchestrator Every day we are all surrounded by “perfect” music. The perfect performance, in the perfect vocal booth, edited and shaped with advanced software, every beat aligned mathematically and every note tuned to an impossible degree of accuracy. And we lap it up, we stream it on repeat and we don’t think twice about it. But then, every so often, we go to a gig, or a show, and our jaws hit the floor. We experience something visceral, inspiring, energizing, unquantifiable and hard to describe to others. We try, but in the end we usually say, “just go see it.”

The Choir of Man has music at its core. It’s more concert than it is Musical, and there’s rarely a moment where instruments aren’t being played in full view. It requires an exceptional level of talent from the nine cast and a mind-boggling level of skill and versatility from our four superswings. Within many songs we have up to ninepart harmony, combinations of twenty different musical instruments being swapped between cast members, and an intricate sound mix requiring a fearless feat of finger faculty from our sound operator. With so much going on, it could easily be a total cacophony, something far removed from the perfect music we hear every day. So we strive for precision, finesse, and consistency in every detail, pushing ourselves to give every audience,

every night, the perfect performance.

The truth is, even the most acclaimed musical artists on the planet are normal people, with bodies that slip, muscles that tire, heads that ache, hearing that fades, emotions that spike, and so much more. These things are all part of what performers, creatives and technicians try to control night after night, in order to chase perfection, that polished, radio-ready presentation of their craft. But it’s exactly these human imperfections that give us, the audience, such a unique experience.

In The Choir of Man you’ll hear a cappella singing: nine totally exposed voices with nothing to hide behind and only each other to rely on. You’ll hear people play instruments they learnt mere weeks ago. When we see an ensemble of gifted artists come together, regardless of their physical fatigue or their emotional state, and using their exceptional talents built on decades of dedicated practise they create a sound so beautifully real, so raw, filled with moments of immaculate musicality and moments of natural human emotion, a slip of a finger or a crack of a voice, a sound so special that we experience it in our bodies and tell our friends, “Just go see it!”

Well, that’s the beauty of imperfection. I hope you enjoy every minute of tonight’s performance as much as I’ve enjoyed nine years of refining it with my best friends.

If we’ve got it just right, it won’t be perfect.

“BEING ASKED TO BE YOURSELF”

Freddie Huddleston Movement Director and Choreographer Growing up I always thought of choreography as danced ‘5,6,7,8’ steps.

The Choir of Man has been the biggest lesson in creating movement which looks unchoreographed I’ve ever had. Every stumble, mop and pint is there for a reason. The rule I live by for the show is, if it looks like we are ‘doing a thing’ then we have overdone it.

We pride ourselves on encouraging the cast to bring themselves to the role, letting the actors feel relaxed in the space. We work on every movement being as true to real life as possible even when bursting into song or throwing a few shapes.

Every time I get to work with a new cast it’s always a unique journey with a group of strangers. We actively encourage everyone to get comfy in

the ‘pub’ and to bring themselves as people to the forefront. Being asked to ‘be yourself’ is actually quite personal for most trained performers to access. It’s something we are not often asked to do and requires us to be very open and trusting with each other. It’s been such a joy working with gentlemen from all of our casts to create movement which stems from them having a good time while being vulnerable and honest.

My journey with the show has been, and continues to be, such a special part of my life. I can’t believe how it has continued to grow and resonate with so many people from all around the world. In the last few years, we have been nominated for an Olivier Award and won a DIMF award in Korea, both a lovely reminder that we are a part of something special and I’m unbelievably grateful to have a front row ticket for the whole ride!

Pint?

“CONNECT

WITH PEOPLE... SHARE AN EXPERIENCE”

The Choir of Man doesn’t have a ‘story’ in the traditional sense — of that we make no secret — but that doesn’t mean it isn’t about anything. Beyond the songs and the beer, I wanted this show to have something to say for itself. The result, I think, is a love letter with three significant addressees: music, human connection (male friendships in particular), and that most beloved British and Irish institution — the pub.

Over the course of our inaugural seasons in Edinburgh and Adelaide, it quickly became apparent that pints and tunes were more than enough to pique people’s interest (especially in Scotland and Australia, let’s be honest), but we wanted to send our audiences home having celebrated what the pub means, and why it has such a deep-rooted place in our hearts. Like poetry, the pub is where many of us turn to mark our biggest occasions, and in our hour of greatest need. We go there to toast beginnings and endings, to drink to newly-weds and to loved ones we’ve just buried. Unlike poetry (unless you’re very brave), we also go there for first dates, football, and open mic nights. We go there for Sunday roasts, quizzes, karaoke and board games. For our messiest nights, and our life-saving fryups the next morning. We tell tales, we build fires,

we bolster old friendships, and we start new ones. The reason people join us on The Choir of Man stage so readily, and with such familiarity(!), is precisely because that stage is a pub.

Seeing what The Choir of Man means to people, and what a tonic it is in such turbulent, frightening and isolating times, reminds me why I wanted to make theatre in the first place: to connect with people, to share an experience, to feel things together and to converse with one another. The show is so unapologetically feelgood that whatever kind of mood you arrive in at the theatre, it’s impossible not to leave with a smile on your face and a spring in your step. It’s a little bit different every night depending on who’s in the room and what kind of energy they bring, just like any pub, indeed any community space, and I love that.

A central tenet of The Choir of Man’s conception was the element of surprise. If you come for the Choir bit, you’re hit with a lot more energy (and beer) than in your typical Handel’s Messiah. And if you come for the Man bit, you get, I hope, a slightly more varied portrait of masculinity as the evening unfolds than you perhaps expected. Yes there are pints and antics, but there is vulnerability and nuance here too. You’re given an archetype, then you’re given license to dismantle it.

Whether we’re conscious of it or not, when we meet a friend in the pub for a pint, it’s often simply the company we’re after. This is especially true, I think, for men. Although things are starting to shift, we still find it much harder to open up and to ask for help. We’re still taking our own lives at a far higher rate. The lockdowns and the helplessness of the pandemic hugely exacerbated this, and current cost of living crisis has only worsened it further. We need places like The Jungle now more than ever.

As a male voice choir, we wanted to make a show that brings joy to people — a show that is fun and frivolous and silly, but also one that speaks to some of those difficulties we face and gently questions what masculinity might look like today. It is an invitation to either forget your troubles for the evening, or to reach out to a loved one and share them.

Above all, we wanted to make a show that puts an arm around people, of all genders, and takes them on a bloody good night out. Sometimes it’s literally lifesaving.

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in

Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

A Change in History?

One of many fascinating items to be found in the book Playhouse Square: An Entertaining History deals with the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Booth performed locally at the old Academy of Music, which was one of the first drama schools in the country and was located at 1371 W. 6th Street. It was at that Cleveland Academy where he would play his last role prior to performing at Washington D.C.’s Ford Theatre where he would assassinate President Lincoln. (Might history have been changed if the Academy had held over Booth’s play for an extended run?)

There Goes the Neighborhood!

The 1870s ushered in the golden age for Euclid Avenue — known as Millionaire’s Row — as the street became a stretch of grand mansions, with grounds often extending as far as Lake Erie, and stately elm trees arching over the avenue.

But by Cleveland’s Centennial in 1896, Euclid Avenue residents were likely muttering, Well, there goes the neighborhood! as the dirt street was paved with sandstone, and businessmen began to buy up and tear down the mansions and towering elms to make way for commercial ventures.

Streetcar lines on the once totally residential stretch hastened the creation of a commercial district, forcing wealthy families to move even farther east on Euclid Avenue. In another 30 years, the district would see the birth of the five main theaters that would eventually become Playhouse Square.

Basketball on the KeyBank State stage?

The stage of the KeyBank State Theatre is so large that a typical high school gymnasium (complete with basketball court and bleachers) could easily fit on stage. As another point of comparison, three of the Mimi Ohio Theatre stages could fit onto the State’s stage.

The Mural Above the Fireplace

Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200.

The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.

The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.

Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)

World’s Longest Lobby Explained

In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space.

Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.

What Would It Cost to Build Them Today?

Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the KeyBank State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Mimi Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.) In 1977, it was estimated that it would cost $75 million to recreate the Connor Palace.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

In 1964, the Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.

Re-Creating History

We call the completed Mimi Ohio Theatre George Gund Foundation Lobby project a “re-creation” rather than a restoration. Why? There was nothing left to restore after a 1964 fire destroyed the space. To reproduce the lobby’s original 1921 splendor, architects, restoration specialists and Playhouse Square staff conducted exhaustive research of the original drawings by architect Thomas Lamb, photo archives and a few remaining bits of ornamental plaster detail to gain a thorough understanding of the space and inform the plans for re-creating the lobby.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand?

At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 2.6 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another three million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.

YPs Take the Lead

Best known as the masterminds behind the annual Jump Back Ball benefit, Playhouse Square’s young professionals group – Partners – was formed in 1991. Since then, hundreds of young professionals engage with Playhouse Square each year to build leadership skills, raise funds and volunteer in support of our not-for-profit mission, enjoy shows together, network and have fun!

Keeping Up the KeyBank State Theatre

First restored more than 30 years ago, the KeyBank State Theatre was repainted from the street to the proscenium in 2015. The new, cohesive color palette showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of the nearly 100-year-old theater. It took 25 painters 12,500 hours and 595 gallons of paint in 15 different colors to complete the project, which also included 6000 sheets of new metal leafing in the auditorium dome and the application of a historically accurate wall-covering

design. While the theater was dark, its lighting fixtures and restrooms received major upgrades.

What’s in a Logo?

The Playhouse Square logo we use today — a tilted burgundy square with a capital P in its center — was introduced in 2008 to capture the enduring spirit of entertainment and excitement. Each of the logo’s graphic elements has meaning: the exclamation point with a star in the “P” symbolizes excitement and innovation; the swirl in the “P” represents creativity and forward motion; the tilted square symbolizes Playhouse Square as a destination; and the burgundy color gives nod to the color scheme of our historic theaters.

Going Green

While red is the color most often associated with theaters, Playhouse Square is making efforts to go “green.” You will find receptacles for recycling paper, plastic and cans throughout the complex. Lighting fixtures are being switched to LED for

increased energy efficiency. And the Playhouse Square administrative office is making strides towards going paperless.

Patterns in Plaster

As you walk through the theaters, you may notice various patterns within the plaster decoration. Common are dentil, lamb tongue, rope and rosettes. Other patterns you may see have been associated with certain meanings since they were first used hundreds or even thousands of years ago, such as the acanthus leaf (immortality), egg and dart (life and death), and the palm leaf, first used in ancient Egypt as a reference to the Nile River. In the KeyBank State Theatre, if you look closely and carefully, you can find ox skulls, which were believed to offer protection from natural elements. And throughout the theaters, you will find griffins, mythical creatures thought of as guardians.

The ”Blue Urn”

On the mezzanine level of the Connor Palace lobby, you’ll find a cobalt blue urn sitting on a marble base. The urn, weighing 325 pounds, was made in Sevres, France before WWI. It is said that its twin resides in the Louvre Museum.

The Show That Saved Playhouse Square

After seeing a performance of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Cleveland State University, Ray Shepardson — the man who was the driving force behind the saving of Playhouse Square’s theaters — decided to stage the show in the KeyBank State Theatre lobby for three weeks. Clevelanders flocked to the performances and the show’s run extended to more than two years, proving that audiences would return to Playhouse Square and to downtown.

In Residence

Playhouse Square is proud to be the home of eight resident companies: The City Club of Cleveland, Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland International Film Festival, Cleveland Play House, Cleveland State University Department of Theatre and Dance, DANCECleveland, Great Lakes Theater and Tri-C JazzFest.

A League of Our Own

Playhouse Square is a member of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. Formed in 1930, members include theater owners and operators, producers, presenters, general managers and suppliers throughout North America.

Marquees on Display

The Playhouse Square District is shining brighter than ever before with our magnificent marquees and outdoor digital signage. The marquees’ designs were inspired by each historic theater with the ceiling of each marquee capturing elements from the grand ceiling of its respective theater. The marquees are equipped with localized sound to welcome audiences with thematic soundtracks, as well as sustainable, energy-efficient LED lighting that can complement shows, holidays and other themes. Guests can catch the Marquee Moment presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, every night before entering and leaving their performances at the theaters.

Officially Historic

In 1978, Playhouse Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of U.S. historic sites worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

What Were They Watching?

When Playhouse Square’s historic theaters first opened, popular forms of entertainment included vaudeville and silent films. A vaudeville show would feature a variety of acts including burlesque, comedy, and song and dance. Silent films were accompanied by live music, usually played on an organ, that would accentuate and punctuate the action on screen.

Roman Rotunda

The design for the Allen Theatre’s rotunda was inspired by the Villa Madama near Rome. Commissioned by Cardinal de’ Medici, the Villa was created by Raphael and Giovanni da Udine. The direct influence of the Villa Madama can be found in the rotunda’s paintings and color palette, as well as the original floor plan for the theater and lobby.

Building Cleveland

The original builder of the Allen and Hanna Theatres — John Gill & Sons Co. — also built Judson Manor (known then as Wade Park Manor), the Federal Reserve Bank and the Terminal Tower.

Performers Help Restore Playhouse Square

During her 1996 run of Kiss of the Spider Woman, legendary Broadway star Chita Rivera was given a guided tour of Playhouse Square. As she followed her tour guide into the State auditorium, an excited Chita pointed to the mezzanine railing and proudly exclaimed, I helped paint that! Indeed, she had. In 1984, Chita had last played Playhouse Square when much restoration remained, and during her free time willingly added her brush strokes to the history of the State. Likewise, Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary fame also performed at the KeyBank State Theatre several times during its early restoration. She became so enthusiastic over the restoration process that she would climb the scaffolding and help paint the ceiling. Like Chita, on a return visit, Mary pointed out the ceiling area that she had helped paint (just-above-and-to-the-left of the Men’s Room doorway on the mezzanine).

Seating Styles to Suit

The Hanna Theatre features seven different styles of seating, though none is ever more than 13 rows from the action. You can choose from traditional theater seating in the orchestra or balcony, club chairs, banquettes, bar stools, lounge seating and historic or balcony boxes.

A Curtain with History

It is has long been common practice for touring shows and performers to leave their mark backstage: some sign walls, some sign posters to be

hung by theater staff and crew, and some attach t-shirts or posters, create drawings or sign onto the theater curtain itself. From its opening in 1921 through the 1980s, hundreds of such t-shirts, drawings and signatures accumulated on the Hanna Theatre curtain, now housed in the Special Collections Department of the Cleveland State University library.

The Power of Three

The Power of Three: The Allen Theatre Project brought Cleveland Play House, Cleveland State University and Playhouse Square together as partners to reconfigure the Allen Theatre, build the Outcalt Theatre and The Helen, and create a new pedestrian walkway from the Playhouse Square parking garage to the theaters. This partnership would bring Cleveland Play House and Cleveland State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance to Playhouse Square as resident companies.

Young STARS Shine At Playhouse Square

You might see volunteer RedCoats from time to time who look like they’re not old enough to vote — and they aren’t. These youths are part of the successful STARS (Students Take A Role at the Square) program, where older students volunteer to usher at Broadway Series shows, concerts and other special events at the theaters. While the STARS program can be interesting and fun for all students, it becomes a particularly invaluable opportunity to gain experience and behind-thescenes knowledge for those students who are planning future careers in the performing arts.

The KeyBank State Theatre Murals

The four murals on the walls of the KeyBank State Theatre lobby were painted by American Modernist James Daugherty (1890-1974), whose work hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian. One of the murals, The Spirit of Cinema, was featured on the cover of Life magazine on February 20, 1970. It was that national attention that became the convincing argument to save the venue from the wrecking ball. Destruction of the State would also have meant the loss of the original historic Daugherty murals, since they are painted directly on the walls. Today they are the only Daugherty works which remain at the original site where they were painted.
