DEAR FRIENDS
T
Welcome
hank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible. Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues. Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you. This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences. Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.
With best wishes,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO

W
elcome to Playhouse Square! Playhouse Square is one of Cleveland’s many gems. All of us at Key, Cleveland’s hometown bank, are thrilled that you are enjoying a show in this historic space, one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer. In 2025, we are celebrating KeyBank’s bicentennial — evidence of our steadfast and enduring 200year commitment to the communities we serve. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive. We are proud to support this artistic treasure and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. For two centuries and counting, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities here in our hometown and in all the communities we are part of. Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage, and transformative philanthropy. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market President

BETTY BOOP IS HITTING THE ROAD BOOP! The Musical, which ran on Broadway in the spring of 2025, just announced the launch of a 50-week North American tour beginning in Fall 2026. Inspired by Max Fleischer’s iconic cartoon character Betty Boop, the musical celebrates self-discovery and empowerment through a vibrant journey from black-and-white fame to colorful adventure in New York City. BOOP! features direction and choreography by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, music by Grammy-winner David Foster, lyrics by Susan Birkenhead, and a book by Bob Martin. The tour will launch at the West Herr Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, NY, with additional tour stops and casting details coming soon.
FROM SMALL SCREEN TO THE GREAT WHITE WAY The whimsical world of Schmigadoon! is leaping from screen to stage as the Apple TV+ musical comedy heads to Broadway in 2026. Following its successful debut at the Kennedy Center, the stage adaptation — based on the show’s first season — will play a limited engagement at the Nederlander Theatre from April 4 to September 6, with opening night set for April 20. Produced by Lorne Michaels and featuring an expanded score with new songs like “The Picnic Basket Auction,” the show follows New York doctors Josh and Melissa (originally played in the TV series by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong) as they stumble into a magical town where life is a Golden Age musical. Casting for the Broadway production has not yet been announced.
PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF THIS BEAR A musical adaptation of the beloved marmalade-loving bear Paddington, made famous in Michael Bond’s iconic children’s books, premiered in London’s West End in November. Paddington the Musical tells the tale of a small, lost bear from Peru who arrives in London in search of a new home. A chance encounter with the Brown family leads him to the wonderful world of Windsor Gardens, but when a mysterious and vengeful villain sets her sights on Paddington, his friends must embark on a thrilling rescue mission — in which they realize they need this special bear as much as he needs them. The role of Paddington is played by two actors, one inside the bear suit who moves about onstage and one offstage who supplies the voice and controls the facial expressions. Will Paddington’s travels eventually take him to Broadway? We’ll have to wait and see!
A CLASSIC RETURNS TO BROADWAY
8
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats is set to return to Broadway in a bold new revival that reimagines the iconic musical through the lens of New York’s ballroom culture. Directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, Cats: The Jellicle Ball trades paws for high heels and introduces voguing to the Jellicle Ball, offering a fresh, queer-forward interpretation of the classic. The musical revival played last year at the Perelman Performing Arts Center in Lower Manhattan, and eyes a spring 2026 transfer to the Broadhurst Theater on Broadway. Full casting and additional creative team details are not yet available. This marks the first major Broadway revival of Cats since its 2016 run.

Playhouse Square is leading Ohio with its arts programming for people with Parkinson’s and receiving international recognition as the organization is the first in the state to obtain certification as a Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate. Playhouse Square is now only one of 23 Dance for PD® Licensed Affiliate locations worldwide. Dance for PD® is an internationally recognized program that offers research-backed dance classes — both in-person and virtual — for people with Parkinson’s disease, and it represents the highest quality of teaching standards and artistry. The certification was pursued and completed by Playhouse Square’s Senior Manager of Neurological Programming Joan Meggitt, who is one of fewer than 50 Dance for PD® Certified Teachers worldwide. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners can register for free weekly classes at Playhouse Square and learn more about the Arts & Minds collaboration with Cleveland Clinic at playhousesquare.org/arts-minds.
Playhouse Square’s public tours presented by Medical Mutual are open for registration on select dates in 2026. On these free, 90-minute tours, guests can learn about our theater district with our RedCoat volunteers as their guides. Tours of each theater, as well as backstage access, will depend on availability. Registration is required, and all attendees will receive a free tote bag courtesy of Medical Mutual. For additional details or to register for an upcoming tour, please visit playhousesquare.org/tours.

SPOTLIGHT ON On Saturday, November 8, Playhouse Square welcomed guests to its annual Center Stage Benefit. Co-Chaired by Amy Brady and Beth Mooney, the event raised funds for Arts & Minds, Playhouse Square’s program supporting individuals and caregivers living with neurological conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia. More than 700 guests began the evening with a cocktail reception in the Mimi Ohio and KeyBank State Theatres, followed by a seated dinner on the stage of the KeyBank State Theatre. The night featured a stunning performance by 2025 Tony Award winner Nicole Scherzinger in the Connor Palace, concluding with desserts and dancing in the KeyBank State Theatre lobby. Playhouse Square thanks all the evening’s sponsors, guests and the Board of Trustees for their generous support in making this event possible.

n 2024, Stereophonic made Broadway history by earning 13 Tony Award nominations — the most ever for a play. It didn’t just rack up nominations. It walked away with five wins, including Best Play, Best Direction, Best Scenic Design and Best Sound Design. Equally as impressive, it snagged a nomination for Best Original Score, a category usually reserved for musicals. That alone says a lot about how groundbreaking this production is. I had the chance to see Stereophonic during the winter of 2024, and it was an unforgettable experience. The John Golden Theatre was packed to the brim, yet the moment the lights dimmed, the crowd disappeared. I felt like I was eavesdropping on something private — an intimate, messy and utterly real creative process unfolding right in front of me. It wasn’t just a play. It was a world you could step into and be that fly-on-the-wall that you always dreamed possible. That sense of realism didn’t happen by accident. The creative team spent nearly a decade shaping this production, obsessing over every detail to make it feel authentic. Their dedication paid off. Will Butler, best known as a member of the Grammy-winning band Arcade Fire, composed a Tony-nominated score that includes 14 original songs. These tracks sound like they were pulled straight from a 1970s rock album, giving the fictional band a fully fleshed-out identity. The music doesn’t just fill the space. It deepens the story, echoing the tension between artistic ambition and personal unraveling that playwright David Adjmi captures so brilliantly. And then there’s David Zinn’s scenic design, which turns the stage into a recording studio so convincing you almost expect to smell stale coffee and cigarette smoke from the moment you enter. Every detail — from the cluttered equipment to the worn-out furniture — pulls you further into the band’s claustrophobic world. At its heart, Stereophonic is about the creative process — exhilarating, exhausting and often brutal. The band’s relentless pursuit of the perfect sound becomes a metaphor for the cost of artistic integrity. Days blur together as they agonize over tiny details — a guitar tone, a vocal inflection — showing how perfectionism can spark brilliance while breeding frustration and self-doubt. Layered on top of this is the looming promise of fame. The band is on the cusp of superstardom, and that pressure amplifies every argument and insecurity. Fame here isn’t a glittering prize. It’s a ticking clock, a force that threatens to crush the very creativity it demands. The play leaves you asking: Is greatness worth the personal cost? Walking out of the theater, I felt both exhilarated and unsettled. The play lingered with me for days, not because of its spectacle, but because of its honesty. It made me think about the sacrifices behind every great work of art and the invisible toll that perfection takes on those who chase it. In a world obsessed with success, Stereophonic reminds us that the pursuit of greatness is rarely glamorous. It’s messy, human and deeply costly. And that’s what makes it unforgettable.
Enjoy,
David Greene Senior VP of Programming

NOTE
from the author
STEREOPHONIC: THE RADIO EDIT (an author’s note) I’m writing this from my apartment in Brooklyn, just as we’re starting tour rehearsals. It’s a bittersweet moment, because after 10 years of writing and building this thing in workshop after workshop—and two full years after that of rehearsing various iterations of it (including the replacement cast for Broadway and West End productions) we are nearing the end of our journey with a project that has changed all our lives. The night before the Tonys, Daniel Aukin and I were loitering onstage at the Koch Theatre as part of a rehearsal for the broadcast—and just then it hit me, how absolutely crazy all of this was. I said, “At some point we need to go to a coffee shop or something and sit down and process what’s happened.” Daniel looked at me very pointedly. He said, “David, we will never be able to process this!” And we both broke out in peals of crazy laughter—because it was so hilariously true. As artists, our successes and failures are equally absurd. We are simply hostages to our impulses: we do what excites us and we try to make something we love. Everything else is outside of our control. This production is our labor of love. To accommodate the demands of a national tour, this version of Stereophonic has been edited down to just under 3 hours. We have affectionately dubbed this cut of the play “The Radio Edit” and it was both a challenge and a delight to pare the play down and get it even sharper and more focused. We hope you enjoy it as much as we loved making it for you. With gratitude, David Adjmi

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE
Playhouse Square Education Department
The Playhouse Square Chandelier The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest out-
door chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.
A Change in History? One of many fascinating items to be found in the book Playhouse Square: An Entertaining History deals with the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Booth performed locally at the old Academy of Music, which was one of the first drama schools in the country and was located at 1371 W. 6th Street. It was at that Cleveland Academy where he would play his last role prior to performing at Washington D.C.’s Ford Theatre where he would assassinate President Lincoln. (Might history have been changed if the Academy had held over Booth’s play for an extended run?)

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.
History
There Goes the Neighborhood! The 1870s ushered in the golden age for Euclid Avenue — known as Millionaire’s Row — as the street became a stretch of grand mansions, with grounds often extending as far as Lake Erie, and stately elm trees arching over the avenue. But by Cleveland’s Centennial in 1896, Euclid Avenue residents were likely muttering, Well, there goes the neighborhood! as the dirt street was paved with sandstone, and businessmen began to buy up and tear down the mansions and towering elms to make way for commercial ventures. Streetcar lines on the once totally residential stretch hastened the creation of a commercial

district, forcing wealthy families to move even farther east on Euclid Avenue. In another 30 years, the district would see the birth of the five main theaters that would eventually become Playhouse Square.
Basketball on the KeyBank State stage? The stage of the KeyBank State Theatre is so large that a typical high school gymnasium (complete with basketball court and bleachers) could easily fit on stage. As another point of comparison, three of the Mimi Ohio Theatre stages could fit onto the State’s stage.
The Mural Above the Fireplace Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200. The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax. The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500. Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)
World’s Longest Lobby Explained
44
In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space. Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an archi-
tectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.
What Would It Cost to Build Them Today? Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the KeyBank State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Mimi Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.) In 1977, it was estimated that it would cost $75 million to recreate the Connor Palace.
A Phoenix from the Ashes In 1964, the Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.
Re-Creating History We call the completed Mimi Ohio Theatre George Gund Foundation Lobby project a “re-creation” rather than a restoration. Why? There was nothing left to restore after a 1964 fire destroyed the space. To reproduce the lobby’s original 1921 splendor, architects, restoration specialists and Playhouse Square staff conducted exhaustive research of the original drawings by architect Thomas Lamb, photo archives and a few remaining bits of ornamental plaster detail to gain a thorough understanding of the space and inform the plans for re-creating the lobby.

Keeping Up the KeyBank State Theatre
What’s in a Logo? The Playhouse Square logo we use today — a tilted burgundy square with a capital P in its center — was introduced in 2008 to capture the enduring spirit of entertainment and excitement. Each of the logo’s graphic elements has meaning: the exclamation point with a star in the “P” symbolizes excitement and innovation; the swirl in the “P” represents creativity and forward motion; the tilted square symbolizes Playhouse Square as a destination; and the burgundy color gives nod to the color scheme of our historic theaters.
Going Green While red is the color most often associated with theaters, Playhouse Square is making efforts to go “green.” You will find receptacles for recycling paper, plastic and cans throughout the complex. Lighting fixtures are being switched to LED for increased energy efficiency. And the Playhouse Square administrative office is making strides towards going paperless.
Patterns in Plaster As you walk through the theaters, you may notice various patterns within the plaster decoration.
Common are dentil, lamb tongue, rope and rosettes. Other patterns you may see have been associated with certain meanings since they were first used hundreds or even thousands of years ago, such as the acanthus leaf (immortality), egg and dart (life and death), and the palm leaf, first used in ancient Egypt as a reference to the Nile River. In the KeyBank State Theatre, if you look closely and carefully, you can find ox skulls, which were believed to offer protection from natural elements. And throughout the theaters, you will find griffins, mythical creatures thought of as guardians.

First restored more than 30 years ago, the KeyBank State Theatre was repainted from the street to the proscenium in 2015. The new, cohesive color palette showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of the nearly 100-year-old theater. It took 25 painters 12,500 hours and 595 gallons of paint in 15 different colors to complete the project, which also included 6000 sheets of new metal leafing in the auditorium dome and the application of a historically accurate wall-covering design. While the theater was dark, its lighting fixtures and restrooms received major upgrades.
Broadway to Buildings Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand? At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 2.6 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another three million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.
