Cheers to 2010! With 2009 almost behind us, we can’t help but think of all the fabulous things we have done and people we have met this year. Just the other day, we had the opportunity to meet Cookie Johnson, designer of CJ by Cookie Johnson jeans (Oprah’s New Favorite Thing) and wife of Magic Johnson. We were also lucky enough to have been selected by Lauren Rowe of Local Channel 6 to sit on her panel interview during the Southern Women's Show in October. We were in great company with Karen Dyer (attorney and first lady of Orlando), Dr. Deborah Harding (of Harding Anti-Aging Center) and Beth Kassab (Orlando Sentinel business columnist). We're grateful for the opportunity and look forward to more media collaborations in 2010. And not to brag, but we actually work in the same office (two doors down, to be exact) with a character artist who is currently working on Rio, and let's just say, every now and then, we get a sneak peek ... shh, don't tell anyone! Captured Forever Technology
This is my favorite time of year. During this season of family time and reconnection, many great memories are created. I know, firsthand, how important it is to capture these moments that seem to pass so quickly. Taking my own children’s photos during the holidays is a tradition I look forward to every year. Here are my tips and tricks to help you to create magical memories for yourself, at home. Written and photography by Amy Smith

Avoid lights inside your home that will cast a yellow or red tone. Unless you know what you’re doing with a flash, don't use it. This means you should head outdoors. The easiest light to work with is open shade. Find a covered area that has plenty of open air to the front and sides. This creates a nice flat light that flatters. It also helps avoid squinting.
There are so many angles, and yet most people stick with just one … point and click. Boring. Get down on the ground. Shoot from above. Throw things off center a bit. Each time you take a shot, move. Click; move; click; move. You’ll find some angles you’ve never thought of before. Go vertical, go horizontal, or add just a little tilt for something different.
Clothing
I often think that photography makes me a better mom because I come up with crazy activities just to photograph my girls in their element. Go strawberry picking, jump through puddles, or have a pillow fight. There are many, many fun things you can do that will have your kids actually looking forward to the photo session — crazy, I know.
Most people know the "magical hour" is right before sunset, but that’s usually the worst time for the kiddos. In my experience, morning time is best to utilize that lovely open shade I mentioned above. If you have older children, go out at dusk, and you can shoot almost anywhere. That glorious amber light will create magic for you.
The days of white shirts and jeans are hopefully a thing of the past. Not many of us walk around matching like that in our real lives, so why should we in our photos? Think color, texture, layering and fun accessories. You want to complement, but not be super matchy-matchy. A tip for moms who are going to be photographed too: Dress yourself first. We’re always the hardest to shop for, so make sure you feel cute, and everyone else will fall into place.

Get TheirAttention 1. Make a dog fly.
Really, any animal will do. Play Superman with your family pet, and you'll definitely get their heads to turn.
2. Shake a box of Tic Tacs.
It’ll get them to look your way, and you can also use the mints as bribes if necessary. (Yes, we do have to employ bribery from time to time for those fabulous photos.)
3. Play the sound game.
Ask them, "Does a cow go 'cock-a-doodle-doo'?" They’re sure to look at you and giggle. You can go through several other sounds before you get to the right one, buying you at least a few good smiles.
4. Sing a song, but with all the wrong words. A little “Tinkle, tinkle, little pig” always piques their curiosity.
5. Play the "Who ____ the most?" game.
"Whose feet stink the most?""Who snores the most?" "Who burps the most?" Anything they’re typically advised not to talk about, go ahead and talk about. The mere mention of these atypical topics is sure to bring out the giggles.
Call for Backup ...
If you find out that the photo-taking process results in raised voices, kids' crying and your feeling frustrated, take a break. Hiring a pro once a year to capture those wonderful memories for you will be priceless. I do it at least once or twice a year myself. Not only will you be in the photos, you'll also not be responsible for all the intricacies involved. You can laugh and love your family while someone else does the technical work.

Long before my daughter was born, I watched in wonder as a child (whom I will keep anonymous) unwrapped a piece of candy and handed the wrapper to her mother (whom I will also keep anonymous). It was amazing to see the mom, in complete zombie-like mode, take the trash to the can. It seemed to me that something was very wrong. Why couldn’t this perfectly capable child throw her own trash away? You might be surprised to know that your tot can not only toddle her behind to the trash can, but also feed the cat and clean up her toys. Making your 2- or 4-year-old do chores might sound harsh, but believe it or not, most children view these household tasks as fun. Take a minute to think about your average day. What unnecessary steps do you do out of habit or because you think they’re part of your parental duty? How many times a day are you taking your kid’s trash to the can? We’re not suggesting you have her scrubbing the floors on her knees, but completing simple household tasks is well in the range of acceptable parenting. These basic chores offer kids a sense of responsibility, give them that “grown up” feeling they oh so long for and reinforce the family unit as a team. Doing everything for your kid, voluntarily or involuntarily, creates not only a spoiled child (reminiscent of the wicked stepsisters), but also one who may not know how to function on her own when the time comes. Someday Anastasia will be 18, in college and using you as her personal laundry service every weekend. Now do we have your attention?

Hey, even Cinderella was rewarded by the Fairy Godmother. However, most parents agree there’s really no room for monetary bargaining when it’s time to pick up the toys. This is why a lot of parents shy away from paying per chore and linking pay directly to expected household functions. A better strategy might be a small weekly allowance based on successful completion of weekly chores. The current average rate in Central Florida is around a dollar for each year your child has been around. That’s right, they get raises on their birthday. If you want to take that extra step, the allowance lesson doesn’t have to end with cold cash in hand. Here’s how to make it interesting. Set up three jars (or cute little piggy banks) and label them “bank,” “savings” and “giving.” Create a guideline for contributing to all three. For example, 50 percent bank, 40 percent savings, and 10 percent giving. Be sure to give your kiddo the cash in denominations he can split. The younger he is, the more fun he’ll have being able to put all his coins or dollars into each bank. More important than the joy he’ll get hearing the “ching, ching, ching” in the bank are the lessons you’re teaching. While instilling in your little money mogul the value of a dollar, you’re also giving him the opportunity to experience the rewarding feeling of contributing to the charity of his choice. Now look at that — two lessons, one tiny event. Still not sold on the allowance? Think about offering a small payment for “bonus jobs” outside of the expected household help. These could be tasks that you might pay someone to complete anyway, like washing the car or wrapping presents.
Do Girls Work Harder? A recent study conducted by Highlights magazine surveyed kids nationwide about an array of topics affecting them in 2009. A whopping 71.9 percent said they have chores to do at home. The bombshell: Nearly three out of four girls reported having household duties, compared with two-thirds of boys. What gives? Equality in the household sets an extremely important example for your kids, so be sure to divvy up those chores equally.
So, the next time little Tyler looks up at you with those loving eyes and hands you his candy wrapper, tell him to take it to the can. Santa has commissioned this elf for a very important assignment: Watch the “nice-list-hopefuls” during the day and return to the North Pole each night with a full report. Santa then sends the magic Christmas elf back to your house (hence his new location every morning). Sometimes, though, in the wee hours of the night, all sorts of mayhem tends to happen. After going through our many, many traditions for Christmas, we have always fizzled out by New Year’s Eve. Quite literally. I was getting bored and feeling kind of pathetic on the celebration front. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands. Hence, Operation: New Year’s Eve Fun was born. Catchy title, I know. Written by Keith Salwoski

I did some research on New Year’s traditions for families with young children. Most involved sitting in a circle and telling what you were thankful for, which I figured my (at the time) 3-yearold son, Braedon, wouldn’t get. So, we came up with some ideas he would like.
Time Shift
We borrowed from the pages of Back to the Future and took advantage of the Time/Space Continuum. Essentially, we “time shifted” the evening forward, celebrating the “midnight” countdown at 9 p.m. — yes, as in Eastern Standard Time.
Confetti
Braedon brought home a baggie of confetti from school that said “Do Not Open Until New Year’s Eve.” This, my friend, was a tradition waiting to happen. We made more. Lots and lots and lots more. I remember as a child, my siblings and I would make large grocery bags full of confetti, and I’m pretty sure my parents still find an occasional piece behind the television or some other out-of-the-way spot to this day.

Cheers! Noon Year’s Eve If you have very young ones that hit the hay before 9 p.m., consider a celebration at noon. Ring in the new year family-style at the annual “Noon Year’s Eve” daytime celebration at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. Join Radio Disney (AM 1380) for the party at 9:30 a.m., when the zoo opens, with games, arts and crafts, and live entertainment. It’s not what you are thinking. When my wife, Amy, and I started these shenanigans, we had a toddler and she was preggo. So, I printed out some non-alcoholic drink recipes to share at our time-shifted New Year’s bash. We started with a Triple Red Shirley Temple (which Braedon renamed The Happy New Year drink). We then tried out the New Year’s Sunrise (Amy’s favorite), and ended with the Starry, Starry Night (Poppa’s favorite).
Twelve Grapes at “Midnight”
I stole this tradition from the Spaniards. According to my “extensive” research, people in Spain eat 12 grapes at midnight for good luck and prosperity in the new year. It sounded easy, and we all need some luck. So I bought the grapes. Let me just tell you ... everybody thought I made it up! If you don’t believe me, Bing it.
A Toast
We bought Welch’s Sparkling Grape Juice (not the best vintage, I’m sure) so that we could toast the new year. Since we only had two champagne flutes (probably from our wedding), we all used martini glasses, except for Braedon.
Put It All Together So, at our midnight hour, we counted down and threw the confetti. We also used some pots and pans to make noise (alternate option: noisemakers).
Clean Up
Braedon was actually very enthusiastic about cleaning up. He ran to get his “vacuum,” which we were confused about. It turned out that he was referring to his kid-sized mop. He wouldn’t let anybody help but Nonna. Now THAT’S a great tradition! About the Author: Keith Salwoski is a hip central Florida dad of two: Braedon (4) and Ella (1). As parents we tell tall tales — frequently. This time of year we tell the tallest one of all. So, do we perpetuate the Santa thing, or succumb to that nagging feeling to tell the truth? (Damn, this parenting thing is hard!) Here are two opposing viewpoints from local life coaches on our choices and their effects. You decide.
Create Wonder
One of my favorite Christmas memories as a little girl is when my parents went to the trouble of laying out a white sheet near the fireplace on Christmas Eve. After we went to bed, they got a boot, and using ashes, they created footprints on the sheet so that when we awoke on Christmas morning we could actually see that Santa had been there! As my children were growing up, we continued the Santa tradition. My “babies,” David and Sarah, are now 22 and 24. Curious how they saw the Santa situation, I asked them how they felt when they discovered he wasn’t real. I also wanted to know, “Did they feel betrayed by me and their dad?” Not only did they enlighten me with their insight; they tickled my heart with their perspective. I found it intriguing that both kids figured it out in the third grade. David recounts a debate at school among those who believed and those who didn’t. "I came home and asked you, and you said, ‘Do you really want to know?’ When I said yes, we talked. You told me and gave me an article on St. Nick about how the tradition started. It was like a wonderful secret — first to believe and then to be on the 'inside,' able to keep it alive for younger children.” I was happy to discover that they didn’t feel betrayed. In fact, their perspective was quite the contrary. “If you had told me the whole truth when I was young, it would have confused me because Santa was everywhere. He’s part of our culture. If I had always known the truth, I would’ve missed out on the excitement of going to sleep, waiting for Santa to arrive. It would have been hard to be the only kid in class who knew the truth — in the midst of all the growing excitement and anticipation of his arrival.”

Not complete in my investigation, I still wanted to know if there were any lasting effects of our choice to celebrate Santa in our home. I was delighted to hear their reply. “After I knew, it was like the spirit of Santa was still alive, because you and others are his 'helpers.' I wouldn’t have wanted to miss the magic and the excitement that is the right of childhood and the memories that live forever. I will continue the tradition with my children because you know, Mom, Santa is real — and he is love, in the form of mommies and daddies around the world.”

Build Character
The story told to children of an imaginary being who slips down chimneys, leaving presents and eating your cookies, is simply the tip of the iceberg of an issue that is long overdue for addressing. Our culture has created many falsehoods, from the Tooth Fairy to the Easter Bunny. As parents, we've not always been given the reinforcement to know it's okay to choose differently, or the facts on the potential consequences of these capers. I ask you to consider, for the moment, the truth of the matter. Written by Lorena Jefferson Christmas can jog a multitude of emotions, from stress to joy, guilt to peace, overindulgence to excitement. My challenge to you this year is to cut through the clutter of your emotions and get to the heart of your parenting values — in particular, honesty. Then, consider your value in truth, and be sure to include it in your Christmas celebration with your children. Ask yourself, “What am I teaching my child? What are the consequences of choosing to lie to my child?” Yes, I said it; Santa is a lie. You can hate me now, or you can choose to hear me out. If you lie (yep, said it again) to your child throughout the year, can you really expect her to be an honest person? Clearly we are not choosing to be honest when we tell tales of Santa Claus. I believe the only true gift you can give to your child is his character — which, you may not have heard, is taught primarily through modeling behavior. And you, my friend, are your child's model. Until a child realizes he’s unique, he considers you the beall and end-all of, well, everything. That’s a big responsibility, I know. Be clear on your choices. Certainly it’s easy to brush this off with the traditional, "Everyone does it. It’s really no big deal.” But what happens when your child finds out you intentionally lied to her? Children hardly ever come back and tell you how it felt when you disappointed them. You run the risk that she no longer trusts you with her precious thoughts. Scary, right? I’m sure this is hard to read. All I ask is for you to expand your mind to consider it. I offer new ways to make Christmas special, meaningful and a tool to create positive character traits in your children. After all, they are your final legacy in this world.

Consider celebrating the fable and encouraging these beliefs this Christmas: • Believe in the Magic: Christmas is a magical time of year — full of joy, anticipation and wonder. As parents, we have the privilege of creating some of that wonder. We get to contribute to a child’s understanding that this world can be a wonderful place, full of surprises. • Believe in True Love: The tradition of Santa can actually teach some important lessons about loving selflessly — since parents do all the work and Santa gets all the credit! True love is not always reciprocal, nor do you always receive thanks, but true love is all giving and unconditional. • Believe in the Wonderment: Children are only young once, and the realities of life come quickly enough. This short time of magic and wonderment is a precious moment in time. If truth and reality were the bases of all things, there would be no need even to wrap presents or plan surprises — when, in fact, there’s joy in the mystery. • Believe in the Memories: Most of us grew up with Santa and continue the tradition. As I spoke with others on this topic, some of our favorite childhood memories come from those magical days. It's amazing how we remember so many good things and how they made us feel. It turns out that David and Sarah share the same favorite memory of Christmas with me. That sheet with the footprints has become a family tradition after all. So here we are, 20 years later and looking back. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Ironically, my “adult” children (and their spouses) still sit at the top of the stairs on Christmas morning, waiting for the time to come down to see what “Santa” has brought. It has continued to be a family tradition full of joy and anticipation — and that’s the greatest blessing of all.

Consider adopting these loving laws into your home this holiday: • Law of Gratitude: Tell the kids the real meaning of the holiday. Tell them that during this celebration, we show our gratitude by acknowledging others through gift giving. • Law of Creativity: Make it matter. Halt the overwhelming gift giving and give two very special gifts: one asked for, and one given from the heart of another that has meaning. Have everyone share why each gift was chosen and how special the person that received it is to him. Do this one at a time, quietly, so all will be impacted. • Law of Attitude: Share with the kids that Dad and Mom work very hard to give them what they need throughout the year. Choosing this time of year to celebrate, we give the gifts not as a reward, but more a simple gesture of gratitude for the gift of them in the family. • Law of Expectation: Be convicted of your choice and how you will bring the holiday into your family. Keep truth always present in it all. Remember, love is a consistent and solid decision. If it has to shift to make room for a lie, there is something wrong. I’ll warn you, this choice will be hard at first. You’ll certainly need to be committed to not inviting Santa into your home. Society is adamant about Santa, and he’s everywhere. You’ll be walking a road less traveled. Hold firm and remember, we expect our children to stand strong in the face of peer pressure every day. So should we. Your children depend on you to do the right thing. A conscious decision to deceive will have varying consequences. Perhaps starting in small ways, such as lying, back talk or anger bursts, it could culminate in a breakdown of mutual communication and withdrawal. It’s important to remember, once trust is broken, it is extremely difficult to get back. Let’s not allow our pride to stop us from building solid foundations in our relationships.

Feature | Once Upon a Time ...
... There lived a Little Boy named John, who loved to draw. Imagine a wide-eyed child with a limitless ability and a desire to create. A child whose time is spent constantly adapting thoughts into the form of impressive images and sketches. That time belonged to little John Hurst. And so he was, a young boy dreaming of a world filled with his own vivid creations — his own fictional universe come to life. This passionate New Jersey-born artist used everything and anything as his canvas, much to his mother’s dismay. Backs of envelopes, books, walls — nothing was off-limits. With visions of a land he craved to create, John suited up to capture a perfectly scripted fairy tale of his own. Armed with a pen, mightier than a sword, he conquered the most coveted careers, a Disney animator. His unyielding craving to bring his imagination to life established him as one of the top animators and storyboard writers in today’s industry. His daydreaming days as a child are now a very vivid reality. During his time with Disney-MGM Studios, John gave life to well-known friends in tales such as Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and others. Also known for his work with Ice Age and Curious George, today John's a storyboard writer. Consulting for Blue Sky Studios, his newest project, Rio, is scheduled for a 2011 release.
John sketches his lifelong fantasy of a rewarding career and a solid family alongside his wife of 15 years, Chimene. The characters in their script also include three marvelous boys, Keegan (14), Miles (8) and Noah (3). With sketch pads piled high throughout their dwelling, the boys are no strangers to the realities of fantasy. "My kids know what goes into the creation of these movies,” John says. His talent is shared at home in the form of a favorite Hurst household pastime … The Squiggle Game. (Someone draws a squiggle; the others create something from it.) But John has no intentions of raising any clones. Each has his unique talent, and John supports any career direction his kids choose to take in the future, believing they will create their own perfect storyboard of life. "As a parent, I simply want them to follow whatever path is their passion,” he says. "It is incredibly important to me to ensure that the proper tools are around them and to let my kids follow their dreams. I do not push. I let them go in the direction that their minds and hearts carry them.” Bringing the world of make believe to life with his talent, John is surely an inspiration to his family, friends and the very people who sit in the audience of the movies he helped create. Perhaps, in another small town, he’s inspiring another wide-eyed child to follow the rhythm of his own creative beat.

... In a land far, far away, a princess named Natalia was born. Radiant and lovely, her young days were filled with fairy tale moments of pirouetting and cascading through the air. Natalia Bashkatova wrapped her eager arms around the art of dance and leaped into action formally at the age of 10, when she began training professionally in her homeland of Russia. After discovering an undeniable talent and love for ballet, Natalia progressed as a classically trained ballet dancer. She eventually found herself touring in the United States, conquering major venues in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. As with any other, her attributes of a princess are clear: grace, dignity, tenacity and, of course, beauty. Her invitation to the ball came as a request to join the Las Vegas venue of Cirque du Soleil. After a year, she then joined the Cirque in Orlando. Today she is a major staple in the performance of La Nouba. With all of her time wrapped up in dance, Natalia wasn’t necessarily focused on ever having children … that is, until her prince charming came along. “To be honest, I never thought to have kids until I met the right man.” And that she did. Natalia’s husband, Yuri Maiorov, also part of La Nouba, performs aerial ballet and shares the stage with his wife a few times throughout the performance. Together, the prince and princess glide across the stage, allowing the audience to feel the synergy between them.
Magically dancing her fanciful twirls, she outshines even the brightest spotlight. Each night, as she bids adieu to her fans, she settles in tight with the family she adores. With one family on stage and another at home, her role as wife and mother are performed every bit as flawlessly. Natalia has mastered the art of motherhood, as well. She is centered on making her family proud; her two children, Phillip (12) and Maria (2), continuously feed her drive. Natalia’s constant on-the-go energy is contagious, as is her obvious strength as a woman. “If you plan to have a family, you don’t have to give up on your career,” she says. “I’ve always been able to find compromise between my career and my family. It is a test for everything,” she says. “People ask me, 'How can you do it?' and my answer to them is always, ‘How can I not?’” A modern-day Belle, Natalia’s subtle stage presence blends perfectly with her no-excuses mind-set. “People make excuses for not going after what they want. There are 24 hours in a day, and it is possible. I am proof that it is possible.” Her passion for the possible began when she was a young girl. The chaotic life of a performance artist is more than the survival in a single spotlight. For Cirque du Soleil ballerina and mother of two Natalia Bashkatova, it is a constant whirlwind of excitement — a whirlwind she wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. ... a perfect spell was cast upon a little boy named Tony with a fascination for magic. The hocus-pocus materialized around the time he was 7. His entrepreneurial spirit was levitated when he began performing magic at birthday parties at age 12. But his enchanting spirit, well, that was apparent at birth. Whimsical and clever, as all magicians should be, Tony Brent wowed classmates with impressions and acting. After years of creative training, poof! Tony is now a master of illusion. Entranced by his magical powers, audiences are privy to the perfect potion of wide-eyed trickery and good-natured nonsense nightly at The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show at WonderWorks. Flailing about during nightly comedic rants, and interacting with his audience during the show, Tony triggers an indescribable energy that seems to attach to everyone in the theater like, well, magic. Although he’s got lots of tricks up his sleeve, we’d never accuse this determined career-dad of the disappearing act when it comes to his family. Tony explains his mischief as a husband and father extends to what he refers to as a “magical family” with his wife, Mitzi, and their three sons. In fact, this father boasts of a house jam-packed with a healthy dose of good trouble and drivel. Sure, the kids are accustomed to his funny ways, but, as all good “apprentices” should, Jessa (19), Olivia (16) and Kellar (8) would never divulge the secrets of their family antics.
Tony Brent is definitely more than just smoke and mirrors. Consider him a magician with a cause, as he soars in his own broomstick game of Quidditch, seizing his latest career opportunity. Tony’s new concept of shows, geared toward kids, are dubbed the Upside-Down Science Shows. Tony is swooping into the local school scene, trying to break the spell of negative self-images and bullying. “I’ve taken it a step further,” he says. “It’s a different approach for kids to understand how to deal with their own issues of growing up.” With a career cauldron bubbling over, Tony sees no prediction of ever passing on his magic wand. “I’ve never been one of those people who think about retiring. Right now I’d say I’d be miserable if I stopped performing. It’s such a part of me; it’s my passion,” he says. He's an entrepreneur, entertainer, socially aware and familyfocused. It's clear that Tony's master juggling skills are not meant simply for the stage. When it’s all said and done, it is Tony who has created the seemingly impossible feat. Having found the key that unlocks the mystery of a fulfilling life, complete with a super fun career that mystifies and amazes, and a family life that can only be explained as enchanting, Tony shows us that following your dreams and mixing in your passions can be more than just an illusion.

Cracking eggs. Rolling dough. Licking the spoon. Ahh, childhood memories of holiday baking. Remember marveling at the sparkle of sprinkles? Today as a parent, the thought of cooking with our kids probably catapults your brain straight to cleanup mode. Sure, it’s messy. Yep, half the egg may never make it to the bowl. You’re bound to find chocolate in the nooks and crannies of her neck. Oh, but the memories you’ll make. Go ahead, grab your apron, smock the mini-me, throw on some holiday tunes, and let’s get cookin’. First we’ll need to overcome the hurdle of having to have a clean kitchen. Send a message that your intentions are for some REAL fun times by making a mess right off the bat. Start a food fight. Give him an Eskimo kiss with pudding on your nose. Be silly. He’ll adore you for it. Now, on to the cooking. Choose a recipe that’s simple, safe and fun. Timothy Keating, chef de cuisine at Flying Fish Café at Disney’s BoardWalk (a father of three), reminds us that ”the best way to engage your kids in the cooking process is to get them touching everything. And encourage them to snack as they go. That’s the best part.”
Remember that cooking is a wonderful covert educational opportunity. “Following a recipe is great for expanding reading and math abilities. Kids in the kitchen draw on a variety of skills, such as counting, measuring, weighing and fractions,” suggests Krissy Paterson, an Orange County first-grade teacher. Let’s also not forget about those everimportant social skills like cooperation and self-confidence. Today children live in a fantasy realm where cookies are magically found at the counter in Publix. “Baking from scratch is a dying cultural ‘art’ in many homes,” theorizes Karin Dewey, a local mom of three and an avid baker. “Of course it’s easier to pick up a cake from the grocery on your way to visit a friend, but imagine the impact we have on another’s life when we make that same cake in our kitchen.” When you bake for someone, you give a piece of yourself. When you bake with someone, you are also modeling the importance of celebrating others.

–a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something. Instead of making it about yourself this year, how about you commit to doing something good for others? Here's a checklist to help achieve your resolution and make a positive impact on a family in need through the Children's Home Society of Florida. JANUARY: Contact Amanda Chadwick (321-397-3004) at the Children's Home Society of Florida (CHS) to start the approval process of becoming a volunteer for its Orlando location. FEBRUARY: Volunteer one night to read books, rock babies and tuck in the kids that are being sheltered at the CHS. This way, you'll get to look into the little eyes of those that you're positively impacting.
INTERVENTION
MARCH: Become a fan — a Facebook fan, that is. The CHS fan page gives little reminders and suggestions on how you can help throughout the year. Invite your friends to become fans too.
The first step is admitting you have a problem:
APRIL: Host a garage sale and donate all profits to the CHS. MAY: Let your volunteering blossom by doing yard work for the CHS. Ask your local nursery to donate flowers and other lawn maintenance supplies. Let them know it's for charity and that it could be a tax write-off. JUNE: Approach your boss about getting the business to sponsor a special day out for the kids that are living at the CHS Crisis Nursery. JULY: Make a child’s birthday extra special by donating wrapped presents to the CHS. Put a removable gift tag on the outside that tells what is inside, so that the staff will be able to give an age-appropriate gift to the birthday child.
