WhatbeganasatypicalmorningatTemplePublicLibrary turnedintoanunexpectedcommunityrescueeffortafterstaff andpatronshelpedsaveafamilyofducksnearthelibrary entrance.
Shortlyafteropening,apatronnoticedtwoadultducksand severalducklingsgatheredaroundastormgrateacrossfrom thelibraryandalertedCallieSulakwhileshewasretrieving materialsfromthebookdroparea.Concernedfortheduck family’ssafety,librarystaffquicklyassessedthesituationand coordinatednextsteps.
WithsupportfromstaffmembersAlisonArchibaldandKatie Stewart,theteaminvestigatedfurtheranddiscoveredthat sevenducklingshadbecometrappedbelowthegrate.Staff workedwithCityAnimalControlpersonneltocoordinateasafe rescueoperation.
AnimalControlarrivedonsiteandcarefullyretrievedallseven ducklings,bringingtherescuetoasuccessfulclosebylate morning.
Tohelppreventfutureincidents,staffsecuredthegrateopening followingtherescue.Theadultducksmovedawayduringthe activity,andcontinuedtokeepwatchincoordinationwith AnimalControlinhopesofreunitingthefamily.

KatherineAtkinsretiredfromthePublicWorksEngineering DepartmentonMay29,2026,afteranoutstanding29-year careerwiththeCity.Duringhertimehere,sheservedinthree departmentsandmadealastingimpactoncountless employees,citizens,andcommunitypartners.
KatherinebeganhercareerintheWaterUtilityBusinessOffice beforemovingtotheWaterUtilityAdministrationOffice.Asthe organizationevolved,theWaterUtilityAdministrationOffice becamethePublicWorksOffice,andlatertheEngineeringOffice wasestablished.Througheachtransition,Katherine'sdedication, adaptability,andcommitmenttoserviceremainedconstant.
Throughouthercareer,Katherine becameknownnotonlyforher exceptionaladministrativeskills andquickwit,butalsoforher welcomingpersonalityand genuinecareforothers.Whether assistingafellowemployee, helpingacitizen,orworkingwith avendor,shealwaysmade peoplefeelvaluedand appreciated.Manydescribe Katherineastheheartofthe office,amotherhenwholooked aftereveryonearoundher.She hadauniqueabilitytomake peoplefeelcomfortableand included,ensuringnooneever feltoutofplace.

AirportRescueandFireFighting(ARFF)personnelfrom Draughon-MillerCentralTexasRegionalAirportrecentlytraveled totheDFWFireTrainingResearchCenter(FTRC)tocomplete theirannuallive-fireburntraining.Thishands-ontrainingis requiredtomaintainbothFederalAviationAdministration(FAA) andStateofTexasARFFcertificationsandensurespersonnel remainpreparedtorespondtoaircraftemergenciessafelyand effectively.
