t’s summertime again, bringing with it a yearning to depart for sun-kissed beaches. This time our journey takes us to central-southern Italy, in search of small pearls of our country’s Italian hotel culture, symbols
of Italian hospitality. Plus, of course, an exploration of restaurants and wineries, all centres of excellence. Venice is resplendent with art and its Biennale is an opportunity to return once again, but smaller, less well-known places like Sutri and Calvagese della Riviera, on Lake Garda, are also hosting significant art exhibitions. This Grand Tour of beauty continues in the worlds of fashion, jewellery and design, with new creations and important anniversaries. All accompanied by a series of snippets on interesting, exquisitely Made in Italy subjects.

TOUR DES VOYAGES PANORAMIC MURALS Curiosity and a sense of adventure prompted merchants and travellers to venture into unfamiliar lands on the ancient trade routes. The map of the world was crossed by the itineraries of trade in spices, incense, amber, silk and tea. These are the leitmotifs of this collection that take us back to the famous reports of Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci. Inspired by encounters with faraway peoples, objects and places Tour des Voyages, composed of five different panoramas, turns any space, living area or bedroom into a genuine chamber of wonders.

ngela Missoni continues what seems to be a search for expressions of artistic empathy with creative combinations and interactions centred around materials and colours. Alessandra Roveda was chosen to create an environment in the Missoni space on via Solferino. Her unique vision
involves the use of brightly-coloured wool yarns to cover the furniture and objects of memory. For the Fuorisalone she conceived an all-embracing project, a magical, fairy-tale house entirely clad in multi-coloured knitted wool - one of her most spectacular, demanding and ambitious works. An extraordinary example of art and artisanality, Alessandra Roveda’s work redesigns and reinvents the space, feel and conception of furnishing elements, transforming the habitat into an embracing, involving experience that is sensual, colourful and soft, giving pride of place to the knitted elements. She also transforms crochet work into an appealing, versatile clothing for chosen objects, a link between past and future that renders the shape of furniture of memory evocative yet unpredictable, alien, transmuting well-loved everyday objects like sofas, beds, books, bookshelves, pendulum clocks and much more besides. All carried out by hand, Alessandra Roveda’s work shows many points of contact with the Missoni language, creating an infinite extension of colourful yarns and crochet in what seems to be a unique pictorial texture. A surprising world revisited and transformed, where reality becomes fairy-tale, a weft and warp of fantastical, surreal and playful, recognitions and diversions into the intimacy of self, in the world of our personal domestic memories. missoni.com

t’s not every day that a 70th anniversary can be celebrated in India, reaching this important milestone in such great shape, but that’s the feat achieved by minotticucine, founded in 1949 in Ponton Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, a small town in the province of Verona, known throughout the world for the
essential style of its kitchens, designed for an upmarket clientele. The company was founded by the then very young Adriano Minotti. He focussed on making kitchens in 1965, the year his second son Alberto was born. It was Alberto who took over the helm of the family business in the 1980s and 90s. The Dolcevita model marked the official launch in 1992 of Alberto Minotti’s career as a designer. His essentialist approach gave a new look to the company’s products, which abandoned the modern style once and for all to become minimalist icons in the 1990s. This year minotticucine celebrates its 70th anniversary by opening two

The launch of the Delhi shop follows the series of openings that started in 2014, when the brand was acquired by the Gruppo Asso, a company from Verona that has been based in the region for almost thirty years. The group, which began its activities with Asso Spa with the production of furnishings and high-level retail contracts, also opened up to the design world by acquiring two established Italian brands, first Maistri and then minotticucine. The business strategy the Gruppo Asso has embarked on with minotticucine involves a root and branch commercial restructuring worldwide and a special focus on protecting the brand, which in recent years has been the target for a number of attempts at imitation. minotticucine.it

n summer, of course, and preferably – but not only - by the sea, and strictly red and blue. Those are the unbreakable rules for the sailor style. It’s impossible to say just when it originally became such a refined fashion classic, not just
aboard a superyacht, a lovely sail yacht or a cruise ship sailing the Mediterranean, but also simply for watching the sunset on a sandy beach, sipping an aperitif on the rocks of a picturesque cove, taking an evening walk along the wharf or exploring the city streets. What we can say is that the sailor style was brought to the world’s attention in the 1920s by the legendary Coco Chanel. She transformed it into a charming item of dress, and despite its age this evergreen has been rediscovered every summer since. And thanks to her, the sailors’ uniform became a clothing phenomenon, transforming a typically masculine way of dressing into an icon of easy, chic feminine style, taking it from Coco’s Deauville of the Belle Epoque to women across the world. It also became a staple for cinema celebrities like Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg in Breathless or Jean Moureau in Jules et Jim in the 1960s. Brigitte Bardot, too, in her beloved St. Tropez, donned a blue and white striped T-shirt, and the super-chic Jackie Kennedy wore white jeans and navy-blue T-shirt during her holidays on the Hamptons, displaying the natural sense of style she was known for. It really is a fresh, classy and timeless look. Born in the 1920s, it continued serenely through the 1960s, smoothly making the transition into the new millennium – little wonder, then, it’s one of the most well-liked garments ever created. It’s very popular today among Hollywood stars who wear it with cool nonchalance in the city, coordinated with high-waisted pants or a double-breasted navy-blue woollen jacket, perhaps with a contrasting red lining. But it also makes regular appearances here in dear old Europe – the beautiful Kate Middleton, muchloved Duchess of Cambridge, is a huge fan, often wearing sailor outfits for more sporty, less official occasions – striped sweaters, gilded buttons or frogging applied to jackets and coats, white pants with blue blazers and sailor-style outfits that always add a little a little extra touch to her bon ton appeal. So let’s roll out the red carpet for the timeless mariniere style

and its perfect ingredients – blue and white stripes with a touch of red, plus cheery stars or small anchors, especially on buttons, belts and a variety of accessories. But don’t go OTT, or you’ll end up looking like a commodore or cabin boy – so “yes” to stripes, everywhere but not too much so, thick or thin on dresses, shorts and T-shirts or even sandals, hats and baskets, all perfectly acceptable when paired strictly with a single colour white, blue or red. But if you’re worried about overdoing it and using strong patterns isn’t your strong point, always remember that a perfect naval effect can also be created by a white shirt and high-waisted jeans with gilded buttons. Here, too, simplicity always wins through.

Food Design A pasta shape wins an Honourable Mention at the Compasso d’Oro awards. Totally unprecedented, but this time… Antonella Euli
L
aunched in 1954, the Premio Compasso d’Oro ADI is the oldest and most authoritative international design award, and for the
first time in its history a food design product has gained a place on the winners’ podium, with a new pasta format, the Campotti. This narrowwaisted Calamarata type takes the form of a number eight, retaining the perimeter of the original shape but reducing its diameter. As a result the pasta has a new mouth feel and flavour - more sauce binds to it, making it tastier and easier to eat. Pasta di Gragnano IGP is such a longestablished landmark you would think all paths had already been explored, but the strength of industrial design is that it can create something new in areas where millions have already set foot, improving function, enhancing product quality and creating new means of access to the market. The idea of taking on this new pasta project was the result of an encounter between Olivieri and Pastificio dei Campi. Two crucial elements in its creation are the relationship between shape and function, in regard to the cooking process – which must be uniform – and the amount of sauce the pasta can hold. In 2011 this innovative bronzedrawn format achieved its first great success when it was included on the ADI design Index. The Pastificio dei Campi pasta manufacturers began production of the Campotti line in 2013, selecting a length of 27mm. pastificiodeicampi.it

of lawyer Aldo Capilongo, a Neapolitan builder and gentleman, but above an incurable dreamer. The hotel’s construction was anything but simple, lasting over thirty years because Le Agavi, including the sixteen villas surrounding it, is modelled on the mountain itself, stretching over eleven floors that join sky and sea in a single embrace, bounded by the private beach. Stone by stone Aldo Capilongo watched his dream take shape, and when it came giving that shape its colours, he showed no hesitation. He had decided all this long before the building was complete – everything was to be painted blue and white. The hotel’s rooms and apartments must reflect the same colour as the sky, creating a feeling of total peace in a paradise on Earth. It’s now one of the Amalfi Coasts most exclusive hotels, the ideal place for a holiday with total relaxation, crystal seas, white beach and wild, untouched nature all combining in an oasis of quiet and tranquillity. “I FORTUNY. A FAMILY STORY”
VENICE
Palazzo Fortuny is a special place, full of evocation and magic, like every self-respecting artist’s home. Marking the 70th anniversary of the death of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949), the Museo Fortuny stages an encounter between the Spanish (but naturalised Italian) painter, stylist, set designer and designer and his father Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (1838-74), who died when his son was only three. Father and son were both greate experimenters in different artistic realms. Over time the collection became dispersed all over Europe, but for the occasion the curators have sought to reconstruct it and every piece is direct evidence of the continuity of themes in both artists’ work. The exhibition is curated by Daniela Ferretti and Cristina Da Roit in collaboration with the Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation. The enchanting island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, near the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, is host to a retrospective dedicated to a master of materials - Alberto Burri. The exhibition gives visitors a opportunity to admire an unprecedented selection of works from all of Burri’s most famous cycles: the first Catrami (1948) and Muffe (1948), the iconic Sacchi (1949-50), Gobbi (1950), Combustioni (1953), Legni (1955) and Ferri (1958), the tortuous Plastiche (1960) and the famous Cretti (1970), which became one of Burri’s most iconic subjects of research, to the great Cellotex, created up to the mid-1990s. These large works invite viewers to reflect on silence, reconstructing the career arc of one of 20th-century Europe’s greatest artistic figures. Fondazione Giorgio Cini 10 May-28 July 2019 cini.it

he title is an English expression, long mistakenly thought to be the translation of an ancient Chinese curse, invoking periods of uncertainty,
crisis and disorder – “interesting times”, in fact, like the ones we are living through now. The 58th Exhibition is curated by Ralph Rugoff, currently director of London’s Hayward Gallery. He began his career as a critic and essayist – between 1985 and 2002 he wrote numerous articles and other pieces for art magazines. In 1995 he published a collection of essays entitled Circus Americanus exploring cultural phenomena of modern American life. At the same time he began to work as an independent curator. The exhibition is held at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini and the Arsenale, and showcases 79 artists from across the world. It has no theme as such, but reflects a general approach to making art and a vision of the social function of art including both pleasure and critical thought. The exhibition focuses
on the work of artists who examine existing categories of thought and open up new ways of reading objects, images, gestures and situations. The exhibition is accompanied by 90 national contributions in the Pavilions in the Gardens, the Arsenale and Venice’s historic centre. Four countries are present for the first time at the Biennale - Ghana, Madagascar, Malaysia and Pakistan. The Dominican Republic is participating for the 106

Twenty-one side events have been authorised by the curator and promoted by national and international non-profit organisations and institutions. Held in a number of venues around the city of Venice, they offer a wide selection of contributions and participations that add to the plurality of voices that is such an interesting feature of the exhibition.
