The Sea’s Call True to its heritage, yet with dimensions carefully reimagined and now paired with a brand-new Milanese mesh bracelet. Ten years on from its relaunch, the Scafograf MCMLIX continues to evolve, penning a new chapter in Eberhard & Co’s maritime history by Diego Tamone - ph. courtesy by Eberhard & Co

On these pages, the new Scafograf 200 MCMLIX by Eberhard & Co. re-engineered into a 39 mm version
I
ts history is perfectly encapsulated in a single word which, at first glance, might be mistaken for a cipher, designed to somehow conceal its meaning from prying eyes: MCMLIX. What appears to be an incomprehensible string of letters is in fact a Roman numeral which, in turn,
corresponds to a date: 1959. For Eberhard & Co., that very year marked a turning point. A year in which, alongside classic slim-profile watches with lines defined by undisputed elegance, or time-measuring instruments designed for sporting, military or medical use, a watch made its debut that was conceived to venture beyond the comfort zone of mechanical watchmaking – an art historically vulnerable to moisture – to take on the challenge of water. Towards the end of the 1950s, the Scafograf emerged from the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacturer; a model whose very name – evocative to say the least – revealed its vocation as a water-resistant timepiece. A milestone that has evolved steadily over decades, relaunched in its contemporary – still relevant

[ The WATCH ] Water-resistant to 20 atmospheres, the Scafograf 200 MCMLIX is offered in four dial variations. Alongside the traditional three-link bracelet, the timepiece is also available in a retro version, paired either with a water-repellent brown leather strap with pin buckle or with an adjustable Milanese-style metal-mesh bracelet featuring a 2Click déployant clasp
– guise in 2016, and immediately capable of leaving its mark in the Sports Watch category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Today, exactly ten years on from its rebirth, the Scafograf MCMLIX returns updated, without changing its essence. In keeping, that is, with the continuity that has always been at the heart of its identity. Featuring a case in the smaller 39 mm size and, for the first time, fitted with a Milanese mesh bracelet, sophisticated both in its weave and in its removable links – essential when paired with a folding clasp for perfect comfort on the wrist. Extremely sporty yet with a touch of style. A must-have for anyone who loves the sea. A world that has long been a part of Eberhard & Co.’s history, which – and this is no coincidence – will return for the fifth year running as the Official Timekeeper of the Genoa International Boat Show in the first week of October. eberhard-co-watches.ch
