he is one of the most beautiful catamarans around right now. Her elegant lines and expansive onboard spaces caused a flurry of admiration and excitement at the last Monaco Yacht Show. Her name is Great White and her owner just happens to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. We are talking, of course, about Rafael Nadal and his new full custom
Sunreef 80 Power, his favourite getaway whenever he has time to relax and luxuriate in renewing his bond with the sea. Having previously purchased a Monte Carlo Yachts 76 in 2013, Nadal later decided to make the move to a much roomier catamaran and turned to Polish yard Sunreef, which is not just an expert custom cat builder but also renowned for its quality and its focus on sustainability. Great White delivers an astonishing 320 sqm metres of living space. “You just can’t match the comfort a catamaran offers,” the tennis legend says. “Onboard space is important when you like sharing it with friends and family and you always want privacy more than anything else. I visited a sailing Sunreef 80 at the Yachting Festival in Cannes and I was immediately interested to know if there was a motor version”. Great White is an ultramodern craft with beautifully elegant lines that combines comfort with superb seakeeping. Her white and cobalt blue livery is eye-catching yet also a great classically elegant choice. Aft, a double staircase brings guests down to water level and makes slipping into the sea a pleasure. A hydraulic platform is ideal for launching the tender and also creates a spacious bathing area. Large portholes run along the sides of both hulls, drawing light into the interior and cabins of which there are four. Nadal’s own stateroom is amidships with a magnificent balcony that opens out over the sea. Lots of light and versatile spaces are the leitmotif. The large saloon is a sea terrace by any other name with large windows and cutaway gunwales yielding 180 degree sea views. “This was one of the first modifications I asked for – I wanted the hull to have low sides so that I could see the sea even when I was sitting,” says Nadal. Two oversize sofas are set on either side of the saloon and the large board flooring creates a sense of continuity with the teak exterior decking. The steering position to starboard in the living area is very much part of the life aboard: a front-facing settee to port allows Nadal to chat with his captain. Outside a very large cockpit provides shade for relaxing in, while a huge sun pad takes pride of place on the foredeck in addition to a further recessed cockpit with large sofas. The fly is also home to another chill-out area and the second - al fresco - steering position. Below decks, Great White offers accommodation to eight guests in four beautifully refined, modern staterooms. The garage lies directly under the large saloon sofa and houses a jet ski and a selection of water toys as well as a refuelling point.
