Banyan Tree is a Jamaican folk song describing a fig tree. These “Banyan Trees” are often widely spread due to the aerial roots that descend from the branches, creating additional trunks. These trees are planted for ornament and shade.

Cangoma meaning “drum” is a celebratory song, marking the end of slavery in Brazil. I was asleep and the drum called to me, saying, “rise, people, captivity is over.”

Tongo, which means mangrove, is a traditional canoe song from Polynesia. The lyrics of this piece are non-translatable vocables that are meant to illustrate people communicating from canoe to canoe as they travel between islands.

Al Tambor is a Panamanian folk song. Tambor, meaning drum, is the focus of the text, encouraging listeners to drum and dance to the lively beat! Won’t you come have some fun? Come and play your drum with me! Let’s play with a lively beat. Maria, oh Maria, Maria is my best friend! She plays on the drum with me. As we play, we dance and sing.

Over the Sea to Skye is a traditional Scottish folk song. Much like other folk songs, it retells a story or legend from the culture in which it originated. This piece recalls the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie to the Isle of Skye.

Obwisana (Goin’ to Ghana) is a pairing of two folk songs from Ghana. Tue Tue and Obwisana are both often used as dance songs or for children’s games. There is much debate as to what the lyrics of Tue Tue are actually about, but most sources describe the song as being about a plentiful harvest of food for the season.

Des Colores is a Spanish folk tune. The text alternates between English and Spanish and celebrates the vibrant colors of nature and beauty.

Ho Ho Watanay is a lullaby, originating from the Canadian Iroquois people. Indigenous North American music often uses a minor pentatonic scale in folk songs and lullabies. Sleep, sleep, my little one.

Siyahamba is recognized as the most popular South African folk song. The Zulu text translates to: We are marching in the light of God.
