Concerto Grosso No. 4 in D major, Opus 6 (published in 1714)
Arcangelo Corelli lived at one of the crucial times in the history of music: Stradivarius, Amati and other Cremonese master craftsmen were perfecting the string instruments; the ancient dogma of modality was being replaced by the modern system of tonal harmony; instrumental music was coming to equal opera and the old vocal forms in importance; and the professional virtuoso instrumental ensemble was developing into an integral part of musical life. Each of these areas — elements essential in the evolution of Western music — was in need of a guiding genius to codify and bring to finished form the many scattered experiments that marked the music of the mid-17th century. Corelli proved to be that genius. Corelli published just six sets of a dozen works each: 48 trio sonatas (Opp. 1-4), twelve solo sonatas (Op. 5) and twelve concerti grossi (Op. 6); these last works were published on 1714, a year after his death, and were enormously influential. The Concerto No. 4 in D major, which comprises several compact movements, is an example of the socalled Baroque “church” concerto, which was more serious in tone and more fugal in texture than the lighter, dance-inspired “chamber” concerto.
FRANCESCO GEMINIANI
Concerto Grosso No. 4 in F major, H.135 (1687-1762)
Francesco Geminiani was born in Lucca, Italy, in 1687, first studied violin with his father, then went to Milan as a pupil of Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, and finally traveled to Rome, where his teachers were Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti. Geminiani settled in Naples in 1711 as concertmaster of the opera orchestra there, and three years later moved to London, which became his base as he performed, taught, composed, produced concerts, and toured extensively in Britain and on the Continent. Geminiani’s teacher Arcangelo Corelli published his twelve Sonatas for Violin and Continuo, Op. 5 in Rome on January 1, 1700. They proved to be among the most popular musical items of their time, and were largely responsible for solidifying Corelli’s reputation throughout Europe. Geminiani arranged all twelve as concerti grossi in 1726-1727. The Concerto No. 4 in F major follows the general plan of the sonata da chiesa (“church sonata”) — two fast movements with close dialogue between violin and continuo, each preceded by a slow movement — but inserts an additional quick movement before the second Adagio.

Concerto in D major for String Orchestra (1946)
When Paul Sacher founded the Basel Chamber Orchestra in 1926, one of his purposes was to foster the performance of new music. To that end (and with the inestimable help of the fortune of his wife, Maja Stehlin, widow of the founder of the Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceutical firm, makers of Valium, Librium and Tamiflu), he commissioned works from Bartók (Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste and Divertimento), Honegger (Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4), Strauss
(Metamorphosen), Martin (Petite Symphonie Concertante, Etudes for Strings), Britten (Cantata Academica) and other modern masters for his concert series. At the beginning of 1946, Sacher ordered from Igor Stravinsky (then living in Hollywood, recently having become a naturalized United States citizen) a piece for string orchestra for the orchestra’s twentieth anniversary; it was the composer’s first European commission in a dozen years. Stravinsky worked throughout the spring on the new piece, and completed his Concerto in D for String Orchestra in August 1946 in Hollywood. Sacher and the Basel Chamber Orchestra introduced the work on January 21 of the following year, Stravinsky’s first premiere in Europe since the Concerto for Two Pianos of 1935.

“Yes, those were horrible days for us, too, those days when Austria was attacked,” Bartók wrote from Budapest on April 13, 1938. “The most frightful thing for us is that we face the threat of seeing Hungary given over to this regime of bandits and murderers. I cannot imagine how I could live in such a country.” Given the unsettled and frightening political situation under which all Eastern Europeans lived during the terrible days of 1938 and 1939, it is little wonder that Bartók’s creativity was undermined. He managed to complete the Violin Concerto No. 2 in December 1938, but then was too preoccupied to undertake any further original work. Paul Sacher, conductor of the Basel Chamber Orchestra and a close friend, invited the Bartóks to spend the summer of 1939 at his chalet in Switzerland and commissioned a new piece from him for his orchestra. Bartók accepted both of the invitations and arrived at Saanen in July. He retreated into the welcome isolation to undertake Sacher’s commission and created one of his most accessible compositions — the Divertimento for String Orchestra.
BÉLA BARTÓK
Selections from Rumanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56 (1915)
Around 1905, during the difficult, poverty-ridden years after he completed his studies at the Liszt Conservatory in Budapest, Bartók was invited by a friend to spend a few days in the country. On the trip, he overheard a servant girl singing a strange and intriguing song while going about her chores. He asked her about it, and was told that the girl’s mother had taught it to her, as her grandmother had passed it on a generation before, and that there were many more such songs. Bartók soon realized that this sturdy folk music was little related to the slick Gypsy airs and dances of the city cafés that had long passed for indigenous Hungarian music. He gave many of the years of the rest of his life to collecting, cataloging and evaluating this vast heritage, and it deeply affected his creative work. While his larger concert works display the essence of folk songs rather than quoting them directly, some of the smaller ones are based faithfully on the models, including the little set of Rumanian Folk Dances. He collected the melodies for the six brief movements between 1909 and 1914, and set them in an almost unaltered fashion, adding mainly the enriched but characteristic harmonic background.

JACOB JOYCE
Currently serving as the Resident Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony, Jacob Joyce, age 28, is quickly gaining recognition as a dynamic and innovative presence on the podium. Joyce appeared with the ISO several times in the ‘19-’20 and ‘20-’21 seasons, in various classical, education, Happy Hour, and community concerts. He also made his debut with several American orchestras in ‘19-’20, including the Detroit, St. Louis, Houston, and Toledo symphonies. Abroad, Joyce has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the NDR-Sinfonieorchester, the hrSinfonieorchester Frankfurt, and the Frankfurt Museumsorchester. For his work in Indianapolis and around the world, Joyce was awarded a Solti Career Assistance Award in 2020.
Joyce previously served as the Conducting Fellow for the Fort Worth Symphony, with whom he collaborates frequently, and has also held positions as the Associate Conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Berkeley College Orchestra, Music Director of the Opera Theater of Yale College, and Cover Conductor of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. An avid promoter of contemporary music, Joyce has conducted several premieres of orchestral and operatic works. Joyce is also an advocate for bringing classical music to new audiences. He is the host and creator of the podcast Attention to Detail: The Classical Music Listening Guide, which provides people of all backgrounds with basic techniques for listening to classical music. He also works extensively with educators, music teachers, and orchestra directors, providing career advice and instruction to students across the country.
Joyce studied Orchestral Conducting with Hugh Wolff at the New England Conservatory. He has also received instruction at the Tanglewood
Music Center and the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. In recognition of his work, Joyce was awarded the Robert Spano Conducting Prize at Aspen, and was a semifinalist in the LSO Donatella Flick Conducting Competition and the Solti International Conducting Competition. Joyce graduated from Yale College in 2014, with a B.A. in Music and Economics. He also received a M.M. in Violin Performance from the Yale School of Music in 2015, studying with Syoko Aki.
As a violinist, Joyce has performed with several orchestras nationwide, and was awarded the Broadus Erle Prize for an Outstanding Violinist at the Yale School of Music. He served as the concertmaster of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and performed regularly with the Boston Philharmonic and the Atlantic Symphony. He has previously attended the Tanglewood Music Center, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Encore School for Strings.
MOON DOH
A recipient of the Takaya Urakawa Foundation Grant awarded to promising young musicians, conductor Moon Doh has found great acclaim in various concert venues across Germany. As the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Flora Symphony Orchestra in Cologne for the past three seasons, he not only led exciting concerts but also worked closely with music pedagogues, reaching an unprecedented number of children through music. Moon’s latest collaborations include leading the WDR Funkhausorchester in Germany, Savaria Symphony Orchestra in Hungary, and Pleven Philharmonic in Bulgaria.
Born in South Korea, Moon spent much of his childhood in the Philippines, Russia, and the United States. At the age of nine, he began cello and piano studies in Russia and has since been performing with various youth and student orchestras across the globe. As a passionate advocate for young rising artists, he was the assistant conductor to the State Youth Orchestra of Hessen. In addition, he was also the conductor of the Under-16 Orchestra of Tonhalle Düsseldorf and regularly coached the Youth Orchestra of Essen. He is the conductor of the annual European Youth Music Week where talented young musicians across Europe gather for intense music making.
A staunch believer in empowering others, Moon has actively worked with asylum seekers in Hungary, children in underserved areas of Bangladesh, and inmates in Baltimore as the president of a student organization while completing his B.A. in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins University.
In recent years, Moon has worked with many orchestras across Europe: Duisburger
Philharmoniker, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and Bergische Symphoniker in Germany, Romanian Chamber Orchestra in Romania, Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra in Spain, Sinfonietta Cracovia in Poland, and Ruse Philharmonic in Bulgaria to name a few.
Under the tutelage of Rüdiger Bohn, Moon received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in orchestral conducting from the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany. Prior to his conducting studies, he received a B.A. in music composition from Sahmyook University in South Korea. Moon has participated in renowned music festivals such as Accademia Chigiana in Italy and Bartók Festival in Hungary. His conducting mentors include Cristian Măcelaru, Peter Eötvös, Jorma Panula, and Manuel Hernandez Silva.
THE PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Now in its 126th season, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is credited with a rich history of engaging the world’s finest conductors and musicians and demonstrates a genuine commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Known for its artistic excellence for more than a century, the Pittsburgh Symphony has been led by its worldwide acclaimed Music Director Manfred Honeck since 2008; past music directors have included Fritz Reiner (1938-1948), William Steinberg (1952-1976), André Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and Mariss Jansons (1997-2004).
The Pittsburgh Symphony is continually at the forefront of championing new American works. The Orchestra premiered Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” in 1944, John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine in 1986, and Mason Bates’ Resurrexit in 2018 to celebrate Manfred Honeck’s 60th birthday.
The two-time 2018 GRAMMY® Awardwinning orchestra has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and live radio
broadcasts. Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra have received multiple GRAMMY® nominations for Best Orchestral Performance, taking home the award in 2018 for their recording of Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5; Barber: Adagio. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony has been broadcast on the radio. The orchestra has received increased attention since 1982 through national network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International, produced by Classical WQED-FM 89.3, made possible by the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Lauded as the Pittsburgh region’s international cultural ambassador, the orchestra began regular touring in 1896 and has embarked on scores of domestic and international tours. In 2019, Music Director Manfred Honeck led the orchestra on an extensive tour of Europe, the 25th in orchestra history.
In the 2021-2022 season, the Pittsburgh Symphony will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Heinz Hall as the home of the orchestra.

In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a robust endowment to assure its long-term financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment to provide for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the Pittsburgh Symphony in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra in their will. Endowed naming opportunities for guest artists, musicians’ chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or tribute for 10 years, 20 years or in perpetuity. DAULER HEARING LOOP:
A system to provide better sound to hearing aid and cochlear implant users.
If you use a hearing aid or have a cochlear implant, you can have an improved listening experience at Heinz Hall concerts and events!
The Dauler Hearing Loop runs throughout the auditorium, with the exception of the Orchestra pit, first four Orchestra level rows and Grand Box left. The hearing loop system also is installed at the Heinz Hall Box Office windows, allowing you to hear the amplified voice of Box Office personnel directly through t-coil enabled hearing aids.

The Dauler Hearing Loop is named for late Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra trustee L. Van V. Dauler, Jr and was made possible through a gift from Randi & L. Van V. Dauler, Jr. and the Emma Clyde Hodge Memorial Foundation.
TO USE THE DAULER HEARING LOOP:
If you have a hearing aid or cochlear implant with a telecoil (t-coil) you need to make sure the t-coil is activated and properly set by your audiologist. You can then activate the setting once in Heinz Hall. If you are not sure if your hearing aid has a t-coil or if you experience difficulty and require assistance, please contact your audiologist.
Sound heard through telecoils can vary from hearing aid to hearing aid and according to position in the theater. Generally, the best signal is found when you sit in the center of a row and facing toward the stage. If you need further assistance in selecting the best seats, please contact the Heinz Hall box office.
HEINZ HALL POLICIES
Heinz Hall, owned and operated by Pittsburgh Symphony Inc., is committed to the safety and well-being of all guests and patrons, and aims to provide a safe, comfortable and enjoyable entertainment experience.
ENTRANCE
SECURITY POLICY
All audience members are required to enter through state-of-the-art “free-flow” scanning equipment, designed both to enhance security and convenience. Patrons using wheelchairs and mobility devices will enter via a door adjacent to the screening equipment for alternative screening. Patrons with children in strollers may enter through the screening equipment.
WEAPONS POLICY
Weapons are not permitted in the venue and/or public spaces owned or operated by Pittsburgh Symphony Inc., including Heinz Hall. Any item that could endanger public safety is considered a weapon for purposes
of this policy. Violators of this policy may be subject to ejection from Heinz Hall and/or civil or criminal penalties. The only exception to this policy is sworn law enforcement personnel and private security officers employed and/or contracted by Pittsburgh Symphony Inc.
BAG POLICY
Heinz Hall reserves the right to search any bags entering the facility. Oversized bags must fit comfortably under a seat to ensure the safety of patrons entering or exiting seats and aisles. Bags failing to meet these requirements must be checked and pass a security search, or you must remove the bags from the Hall.
SMOKING POLICY
Heinz Hall is a smoke/vapor free
facility. (Smoking is permitted in the Heinz Hall Garden Plaza)
FOOD AND BEVERAGE POLICY
Outside food or alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Patrons are permitted to bring in one sealed clear plastic water bottle which may only be consumed in designated areas and may not be consumed in the auditorium.
COSTUME POLICY
Heinz Hall does not permit costume masks of any kind or facsimiles of weapons that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the concert experience. Guests are welcome to attend certain programs, (e.g. The Music of Harry Potter or The Music of Star Wars) in costume.
ACCESSIBLE SEATS are available with companion seats. There is a level entrance and route to the main floor of the auditorium. Contact the box office for the location of the companion seats.
HEINZ HALL BOX OFFICE HOURS are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m; Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Weekend hours vary based on performance times. Tickets may be purchased by calling 412.392.4900 and are also available at the Theater Square Box Office.
BRAILLE AND LARGE PRINT PROGRAMS are available at the concierge desk for all BNY Mellon Grand Classics, PNC Pops, Fiddlesticks Family Series and Sensory-Friendly performances.
CHILDREN are encouraged to attend our youth concerts and Fiddlesticks Family Concerts. Children age six and over, are welcome at all performances with a purchased ticket. The Latecomer’s Gallery and lobby video monitors are always options for restless children.
COAT CHECK is available in the Grand Lobby.

DRESS CODE for all concerts is at your personal discretion and ranges from dress and business attire to casual wear.

FIRE EXITS are to be used ONLY in case of an emergency. If the fire alarm is activated, follow the direction of Heinz Hall ushers and staff to safely evacuate the theater.

LATECOMER’S GALLERY
is located behind the Main Floor to enjoy the performance until you can be seated. Latecomers will be seated at suitable intervals during the program, at the discretion of the conductor. The gallery is also available for parents with restless children.
LOCKERS are located on the Lower and Gallery levels.
LOST AND FOUND items can be retrieved by calling 412.392.4844 on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
MOBILE DEVICES should be turned off and put away upon entering the theater.
PHOTOGRAPHY, video, or audio recording of the performance is prohibited at all times, unless otherwise noted.
PRE-PAID PARKING is available to all ticketholders in the Sixth & Penn garage across from Heinz Hall. Ask about prepaid parking when you order your tickets.
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S RESTROOMS are located on the Lower, Grand Tier and Gallery levels. Additional women’s restrooms are located off the Garden and Overlook rooms. Accessible restrooms are located on the Grand Tier level and a family/accessible restroom is available on the Main Floor.
SMOKING is not permitted in Heinz Hall. The garden is accessible during performances for this purpose.
