JACK EVERLY Jack Everly is the principal pops conductor of the Indianapolis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). He has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and appears regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. Everly will conduct more than 90 performances in more than 20 North American cities this season.
Originally appointed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, Everly was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, where he served as music director. In addition to his ABT tenure, he teamed with Marvin Hamlisch on Broadway shows that Hamlisch scored. He conducted Carol Channing hundreds of times in Hello, Dolly! in two separate Broadway productions. In 1998, Jack Everly created the Symphonic Pops Consortium, serving as music director. The Consortium, based in Indianapolis, produces new theatrical pops programs, including the most recent On Broadway with Kander & Ebb. In the past 12 years, more than 265 performances of SPC programs have taken place across the United States and Canada.
As music director of the National Memorial Day Concert and A Capitol Fourth on PBS, Everly proudly leads the National Symphony Orchestra in these patriotic celebrations on the National Mall. Hailed as one of the finest choruses in the country, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (MCP) is proud of its long artistic partnership with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and looks forward to another exciting season at Heinz Hall. Primarily a volunteer chorus, the Mendelssohn Choir is composed of more than 100 singers whose passion and commitment enables them to perform alongside the world’s greatest musicians. Collectively, the members of the Choir volunteer more than 35,000 hours annually to bring the joys of choral music to Pittsburgh audiences. The women and men of the Mendelssohn Choir gave one of their most powerful and touching performances ever with the Pittsburgh Symphony on May 10, 2014 at New York’s Carnegie Hall to close the Spring for Music Festival. Called “an extraordinary performance of great subtlety, great musicality and simply great singing” by the Festival’s co-founder, Mary Lou Falcone, (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and a “bold, meaningful experiment in programming” with the “impressive orchestra and chorus bringing dramatic purpose as well as musical distinction to the Requiem” (New York Times), the concert was a highly acclaimed choral tour de force.

Recent past performances include Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning and Mozart’s Great Mass to sold-out audiences at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, Brahms’ Requiem, and a critically acclaimed performance of Rachmaninoff’s a cappella masterwork, the Vespers, at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Committed to fostering the choral art form, the Mendelssohn Choir has numerous recordings, commissions and premieres to its credit, including works by Ned Rorem, Nancy Galbraith, and Derek Bermel. The Choir’s most recent recording released in fall 2011 is Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh with Manfred Honeck conducting.
The Mendelssohn Choir seeks to foster the next generation of choral singers through the Junior Mendelssohn Choir, the region’s premier young adult chorus for youth in grades 8 to 12. BETSY BURLEIGH, DIRECTOR recent performance of Beethoven’s Mass in C and Brahms’ Schicksalslied with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mozart’s Great Mass, Copland’s In the Beginning, Brahms’ Requiem, Bach’s B Minor Mass, and Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, in addition to preparing the choir to sing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall. In 2009, she took the Mendelssohn Chamber Singers, a select sub-chorus of 32, to sing an invited performance at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. As guest conductor, Burleigh has led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Theater engagements have included music direction at Opera Cleveland and the Cleveland Public Theater. Also active as a clinician and festival conductor, she most recently led Cincinnati’s October Festival Choir in Haydn’s Theresienmesse.

THE PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA For more than 117 years, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been an essential part of Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape. The Pittsburgh Symphony, known for its artistic excellence, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. This tradition was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With a long and distinguished history of touring both domestically and overseas since 1900, the Pittsburgh Symphony continues to be critically acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest orchestras. With more than 36 international tours, including 20
European tours, eight trips to the Far East, and two to South America. The Pittsburgh Symphony was the first American orchestra to perform at the Vatican in January 2004 for the late Pope John Paul II, as part of the Pontiff’s Silver Jubilee celebration. The Pittsburgh Symphony has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and radio concerts. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony broadcast coastto-coast, receiving increased national attention in 1982 through network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International. The PRI series is produced by Classical WQED-FM 89.3 in Pittsburgh and is made possible by the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment to provide for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the Pittsburgh Symphony in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra in their will.
