Sixty years later…
20% Off Your Transport Costs
John Stewart risked it all (“It is a risk – a very happy one!”) to realise his dream of a rural Festival Theatre for Scotland. Although post-war austerity prevented the construction of a bricks and mortar edifice, Stewart and his many supporters were not to be denied. In 1951, Stewart’s dream finally became a reality – in a tent! – and the Theatre in the Hills was born . . .
In these turbulent economic times, PFT faces increasing financial pressures like almost everyone else. However, I’m delighted to say that we’ve been able to continue to offer Groups our fantastic travel subsidy, which offers you 20% off the total cost of your Group transport (coach and train) when you visit PFT.
Sixty years later, some things have changed. We’ve relocated across the River Tummel into a purpose-built theatre, itself now thirty years old. But Stewart’s central ambition - to present a wide range of high quality productions in repertoire - is still what guides PFT today. And for our special Sixtieth year, we’ve decided to programme a Season which celebrates the different kinds of show that you, our audiences, have most enjoyed over the years. With beautifully detailed and exquisitely painted sets created by our “fabled workshop teams” (The Times, 2010) and multitudes of intricate and lavish costumes made by our talented wardrobe staff supporting our highly skilled ensemble of actor-musicians, you can expect more ‘wow’ factors at PFT than anywhere else this Season! As The Scotsman put it as recently as July, 2010: “ . . . although theatre should not be all about pretty costumes and gorgeous sets, the capacity to wow audiences in this way is part of Pitlochry’s armoury, and its determination to retain that capacity is an achievement worth applauding.” So make sure that you join us to enjoy the very best of theatre at Scotland’s longest continuously producing theatre. Turn over and open up the fold to reveal six of the best for 2011!

A comic tale of man, music and machines!
A vivacious Victorian comedy
It’s sometime quite soon - and the warnings about Britain becoming a ‘broken society’ appear to have come true . . .
Rose Trelawny, the effervescent young star of Sadler’s Wells, faces an agonising decision: should she give up the ‘gypsy’ world of the theatre in order to please the Establishment family of Arthur Gower, the young man to whom she has lost her heart? Or should she forsake her beloved so that she can pursue the glittering theatrical career that beckons?
Cities have become no-go areas. The police are nowhere to be seen. And Jerome, a lonely composer suffering from creative block, is the last resident of his high-rise tenement. Surrounded by synthesizers and sophisticated audio-visual equipment, his only companion is NAN 300F, a robot nanny who seems almost human, despite not functioning quite as intended. Well, she was made out of spare parts . . . Jerome is desperate to gain access to his teenage daughter, who lives with his estranged wife, Corinna. Knowing that his unconventional lifestyle is unlikely to endear him to the Department of Child Wellbeing, he enlists the help of Zoë, an out-of-work actress, to pose as his fiancée and play happy families for the benefit of Mervyn Bickerdyke, the Child Welfare Officer. But things with Zoë go badly wrong, just as Mervyn and Corinna are on their way to sample Jerome’s stable new home environment - and Jerome is forced to improvise. It’s amazing what you can do with a robot, a few microchips and a screwdriver . . . After a break of four years, Ayckbourn returns to PFT with a deliciously funny, futuristic comedy: if you enjoyed Snake In The Grass or Man Of The Moment, your Group will love this!
Heart rules head. Rose bids farewell to her distraught fellow thespians and prepares for a new, respectable life in Cavendish Square – for before the wedding, she is to spend some time ‘on probation’ at the Gowers’ home, under the watchful eyes of Arthur’s grandfather, the choleric Sir William, and his prim great-aunt, Miss Trafalgar. But the stifling, regimented routine of life at Cavendish Square requires Rose to play a part to which she is ill-suited. And every new rule and regulation makes her urge to rebel grow stronger. Until a surprise nocturnal visit from some of Rose’s old theatrical chums brings matters to an explosive head . . . One of the great comic playwrights of the late Victorian era alongside Wilde and Shaw, Pinero’s affectionate, hilarious memoir of the Dickensian theatrical world of the 1860s – when times and tastes were changing – is his only major work not to have been seen at PFT before. So if your Group enjoyed The Magistrate in 2007, this one mustn’t be missed! “A brass-bowelled barnstormer” The Independent
“This is a bitterly and brutally funny play which traps you, time and again, between your own gleeful hilarity and Ayckbourn’s quizzical smile” The Sunday Times “ . . . the exhilarating Ayckbournian paradox is that the darker it gets the funnier it becomes” The Guardian
a
“An exuberant celebration of the irrepressible urge to make theatre . . . vigorous and sparky.” The New Statesman
A perfectly ‘loverly’ musical adapted fromGeorge Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion 1910: on a cold March evening in Covent Garden, the overbearing Henry Higgins, a Professor of Phonetics, encounters Eliza Doolittle, a young flower seller. Appalled by Eliza’s strangled vowels and missing consonants, Higgins also recognises that it is only her mangled English and coarse manners that separate her from the so-called Upper Classes. The discovery prompts Higgins to make an outrageous wager with the amiable Colonel Pickering: that in just six months, he could transform Eliza so completely that she would pass for a Duchess at the lavish Embassy Ball. But Eliza’s gradual metamorphosis under Higgins’s relentless tutelage may come at a terrible price. Too eloquent for a flower girl, yet without the breeding and education of the aristocracy, what will become of Eliza when the wager is over . . ? This bewitching tale of a Cockney flower girl’s transformation into the toast of London society is one of the greatest musicals of all time. Featuring unforgettable songs such as I Could Have Danced All Night, On The Street Where You Live, Get Me To The Church On Time and many others, this much-loved musical is sure to be a sell-out. Featuring a large cast of actor-musicians, sumptuous costumes and a glittering set, this will be a perfectly ‘loverly’ way for you and your Group to celebrate 60 years of theatrical magic at the Theatre in the Hills.
A classic, chaotic war-time farce Merton-cum-Middlewick, 1942: the inhabitants are braced for an imminent Nazi invasion. But Miss Skillon, the spinsterish village busybody, considers that a far greater danger threatens the Reverend Lionel Toop. Not only is his new young wife Penelope thoroughly ‘modern’ - and worse, an actress - but Miss S. is convinced that she’s also having an affair . . . The blameless Penelope, meanwhile, is delighted when an old actor friend drops in. The handsome Clive Winton, now in the army, has a day’s leave from his duties guarding German POWs at a nearby camp. Spotting that Private Lives - which holds fond memories for both - is playing at the local theatre, Penelope suggests a night out. But as army regulations prevent Clive from visiting town, Penelope dresses him in one of her husband’s spare clerical suits – so they can visit the production in disguise . . . But then a German POW escapes and heads straight for Merton, desperate for a change of identity – and clothes. Closely followed by Clive’s long-suffering Sergeant. And Penelope’s uncle, the Bishop of Lax. And Humphrey, a rotund locum priest . . . One vicarage, five vicars, two of whom aren’t: everything you need for a classic British farce! Brilliantly constructed and achingly funny, See How They Run! is simply one of the greatest farces of all time. Think Noises Off - with dog collars!
“Still one of the great musicals, dazzling, sophisticated, funny” The Sunday Times
“Lovers of outrageously contrived wartime farces will love this outrageously contrived wartime farce . . . funny and always bulldog-spirited.” The Evening Standard
“For those seeking musical theatre at the very summit of its achievement . . . My Fair Lady undoubtedly remains the top recommendation” The Daily Telegraph
“ . . . proves that farce is the essence of theatre in that it requires physical agility, spot-on timing and is capable of transforming a preposterous situation into spiralling ecstasy.” The Guardian
A bawdy musical memoir of National Service 1948, the Malayan Emergency: whilst most of Britain is getting used to peacetime, on the other side of the world the British army is engaged in a forgotten war against communism. Its secret weapon in the fight against the insurgents? The Song and Dance Unit South East Asia - or SADUSEA . . . The task of creating a variety show to entertain the troops has fallen to Acting Captain Terri Dennis, the finest Marlene Dietrich impersonator ever to hail from Chorley. The problem is that he’s been landed with a bunch of wet behind the ears National Service types who can’t tell a tap step from a tea cup. If having to master the Western Approaches ballet and Fred and Ginger duets wasn’t enough, the unit also has to cope with a deranged Sergeant Major who’s up to something iffy on the black market, a commanding officer who’s convinced that simple Christian piety can defeat Communism – and a couple of Chinese servants who aren’t quite what they seem . . . Into this military mayhem comes new boy Steven Flowers. Can he find his bearings, keep his nerve and lose his virginity – all before the final curtain? Based on Peter Nichols’s own experiences entertaining the troops with Kenneth Williams and Stanley Baxter, Privates On Parade pays a nostalgic (and very funny) tribute to the swansong of the concert party.
A disturbing comedy-thriller Dr. Johnson - earnest, English, newly-graduated - seems to have fallen on his feet when he is invited to join the Glasgow practice of an esteemed if eccentric GP, Dr Angelus. With a steady flow of patients and the constant guidance of his philosophising new mentor, Johnson’s future looks positively rosy. Which is more than can be said for some other members of the household. Angelus’s mother-in-law has become seriously ill with a mysterious condition, despite receiving around-the-clock care from Angelus himself. Hesitantly, Johnson suggests that a second opinion might be in order. Although Angelus is initially reluctant, when his mother-in-law’s condition suddenly worsens, he agrees to summon Sir Gregory Butt, a renowned consultant. But Sir Gregory arrives just too late - and Angelus and his wife are plunged into mourning. To Johnson’s surprise, Sir Gregory’s opinion of Dr. Angelus is not particularly high. And in a cryptic parting shot, he warns Johnson against signing the death certificate, should he be asked. Something which Angelus then proceeds to do . . . Part psychological thriller, part pitch black comedy, Dr. Angelus was made famous by Alistair Sim’s mesmerising performance in the title role in the original 1947 production. Now the dark doctor returns to mark the anniversary of James Bridie’s death in the same year that PFT was born. Is your Group brave enough to enter the deadly world of Dr. Angelus?
“What a joy, what an absolute joy – Privates On Parade is a complete hoot from start to finish” The Yorkshire Post “The power of Peter Nichols’s play lies in constantly blending glittering humour and acerbic irony” The Sunday Times Privates On Parade contains frequent, very strong language, male nudity and scenes of a sexual nature.

What you’ve said… We work very hard to make your trip to PFT enjoyable, special and stress-free, so we thought you might like to know what some Group Organisers said about their experience in 2010: The group loved it. Out of 31 students, 30 rated it better than last year’s Whisky Galore – A Musical! We have been coming since 1970 and aren’t going to stop now! Our day ran like clockwork, absolutely no problems. We’ll be back next year together and each of us separately during other times of the year.
