PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God of the nations, we celebrate this weekend the founding of our nation. We are thankful for the gift of freedom and the promise of America to be a land of justice and opportunity for all, but in many places there is little to celebrate. We ache for people both far and near who suffer and struggle just to have the basic necessities of life, while others of us live in abundance. Forgive us when our abundance obscures the needs of our fellow citizens. We lament the incivility and division that permeates our society and prevents us from listening to one another. We forget that the gift of freedom brings with it the call to use freedom to build a society of goodness and blessings for all. Merciful God, forgive our sins and grant us your healing grace to follow in the ways of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who taught us to love you with all that we are and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
