MUSIC AT PINE STREET opens its 2011-2012 season with a celebratory concert of the completion of the 1991 rebuild of the great SkinnerMöller organ in the sanctuary. After much discussion and research, the organ committee recommended that the Möller Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, rebuild the existing organ at Pine Street rather than replace it with a new instrument. Donald Clapper, then Minister of Music, led the study and concluded that the great heritage of the 1926 E.M. Skinner instrument and its subsequent reworking by both the AeolianSkinner Co. and the Moller Co. was worth refurbishing and enlarging. In so doing, they gave us a gift of one of the finest pipe organs in America. Its superb voicing and stop list perfectly wed it to the lustrous acoustics of the Pine Street sanctuary, giving a sound that is both brilliant and refined.

most celebrated organ competition. The couple were an important force in French organ music for more than twenty-five years.
On her own, Ms. Davis won the St. Alban’s Competition in England, which started a dynamic concert career for her across Europe and North America. She became the Professor of Organ at two major French conservatories during her sojourn there. In the mid-2000’s M. Firmin-Didot passed away, and Ms. Davis decided to return to the U.S., to live and teach here for the first time in thirty years. She received the appointment as Distinguished Professor of Organ at Wichita State University in Kansas and she continues her concert career in conjunction with this appointment. She has appeared at both Regional and National Conventions of the American Guild of Organists and has played at virtually every significant venue in North America and Europe as well as many in Asia and South America.
Her program features the music which she loves and for which her adopted country has called her ‘one of the premier proponents of French organ music in the world today’. She plays with grace and élan that mark the performances of few organists today. With a deep understanding of this great literature and an equal understanding of the culture from which it springs, she makes a convincing argument for this repertoire beloved of all organists and organ audiences.

The Administration and Finance Committee recommended dismissing the Building and Renovation Committee, and the Capital Campaign Committee with thanks, and that the books for the Capital Campaign remain open until December 31, 2011 to allow for the final collection of pledges, with the disposition of the budget surplus to be determnied by the Budget Task Force and Session.
As a result of the approval by PCUSA of a revised Form of Government it will be necessary for Pine Street to develop its own manual of administrative operations. This will be done by the Administration and Finance Committee.

Sharing the Harvest

Sometimes it is just fun to throw a party! It is even better to throw a party which will help others. This is what our Downtown Daily Bread fundraising event on Friday, October 14, 2011 at Historic Harrisburg Association hopes to achieve. The fall is a time of "harvest and gathering” to prepare for the long winter ahead. Our DDB fundraiser will help us do just that. With proceeds from sponsorships, ticket sales, and raffle ticket purchases, DDB will be able to buy food and kitchen supplies to help feed clients through the winter. As food prices continue to climb and client numbers continue to grow, it is imperative that we look for creative ways to raise funds. Why not have fun at the same time?

Peacemaking Offering October 2, 2011

Peace has been defined as tranquility, a calm and quiet state, free from disturbances or noise. To live in peace, to be in a state of peace, takes on different meanings for all of us. Living peacefully includes the protection of individuals’ integrity and human rights. For some of us, peace means access to education and the elimination of poverty, homelessness, injustice, and violence. For some, peace is the ability to openly express our opinions or to practice our religious beliefs without the fear of imprisonment or even death. In our homes, our communities, and our world, we are called to be makers of peace. Peacemaking is the human response to God’s gift of peace giving.
The Peacemaking Offering was created in 1980 to support the efforts of the PC(USA) to live out a deeper commitment to peacemaking as part of our faithfulness to God. It is one of four special offerings designated by the PC(USA)’s General Assembly. 50% of the offering is used by the General Assembly ministries through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. 25% is used by presbyteries and synods. And 25% stays locally to support an agency that is working toward peace in our community.
This year Pine Street’s mission committee has decided to give that 25% of our collection on Sunday, October 2, to Heeding God’s Call. This organization is a new ecumenical faith-based campaign inspiring hope, raising voices and taking action to end gun violence. Participating Harrisburg churches are currently Unitarian Universalists of Harrisburg, First Church of the Brethren, Market Square Presbyterian Church, Martin Luther King Baptist Church, United Baptist Church, Harrisburg Brethren in Christ, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Children's Sabbath

On Sunday, October 16th our worship service will be lifting up Children’s Sabbath. This is a designated Sunday to celebrate the gifts of children and to think about children’s advocacy.
You may be thinking why or what can I do? Or why should we be thinking about this during a Worship service? What we can do is pray for those children who are in need, we can study and educate ourselves, and we can reflect on the lives of the many numbers of children who need an adult to stand up for them. This is a perfect time to explore what our faith tradition calls us to do: to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” and to "love your neighbor as yourself.”
On Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 11:00 please come to worship with an open heart and mind. Our Order of Worship will remain the same, but the liturgy will lift up all children. The children and youth of Pine Street and KOALA Club will sing that day and I will be leading worship that day. Come support all of God’s children.
Earth Care At Pine Street

Recently the Pine Street session approved a PC(USA) program called Earth Care Congregations. This program helps churches plan and continue their earth care ministry while also gaining greater support from their congregations. Earth Care Congregations is a structured certification program for Presbyterian churches to function in a manner consistent with God's call to not only care for creation, but to commune with creation.
In committing to the Earth Care Pledge the Mission Committee has formed an Earth Care Team to begin the process of achieving certification. The team consists of 5 members: Pam Bauer, Norriene Koozer, Bonnie Peckham, Carol Putt and Sue Wilson. The team will assess how well our church performs earth care or creation care initiatives in an audit provided by PC(USA) Environmental Ministries. These are initiatives that fall under 4 specific areas of church life: Worship, Education, Physical Plant and Outreach. These are the same areas incorporated in Pine Street's Strategic Plan. We must have 25 points in each area in order to submit the audit for certification as an Earth Care Congregation. We (the congregation) earn these points each year by developing and acting on ideas about creation care derived by members of the congregation in Sunday School Classes, committees, as individuals, youth groups. When an idea makes itself known write it down on the one of the papers provided on the mission table in the Gathering Space. Ideas will be reviewed and feasible ideas acted on. Examples:
• Under Physical Plant – family groups or individuals take home the empty plastic containers to recycle otherwise they get thrown in the trash in the church kitchen-no recycle pick up at the church
• Under Worship – have paintings or photos (displayed by church members) that have attached to them a card with the Bible verse which best speaks to the individual of the art.
• Under Outreach-Gleaning – A form of outreach we are doing now. Join us at Strite's OrchardOct. 1, at 9AM (rain or shine).
• Under Worship – A Sunday School Class may want to investigate Isaiah 61 as a linkage point to the tradition of Jubilee described in Leviticus 25.
The team will keep track of your efforts and as an Earth Care Congregation share what we are doing with other Earth Care Congregations. Most importantly we will keep you informed through Pine Street Life and email.
Family Retreat Wish List!
As part of the Family Retreat on November 4 & 5 and learning about discipleship, the children will be making hygiene kits to be given to one of our local missions. We need your help to fill the bags.

known as the Kitchen Committee. This committee consists of six people from the congregation. They are Audrey Bell, Marilyn Miller, Jo Dolbin, Ted Dolbin, Lydia Humphrey, and Carolyn Humphrey. This sub-committee oversees all aspects of the kitchen. These are the behind the scenes people that take care of things that you and I may never even think about. Things like cleaning the kitchen. They take care of procuring volunteers to come in once a month to clean various parts of the kitchen and houseclean a designated area of the kitchen. (We have one of the cleanest church kitchens around!) They make and place the signs that are on the cupboards, purchase dish towels, replace broken dishes, launder dish towels and tablecloths, houseclean closets 1, 2 and the pantry in Fellowship Hall and the list goes on.
Maintaining the kitchen and replacing broken and lost items takes money and the kitchen is not a budgeted item. So with session approval, we will be having our first cookie/craft bazaar with all proceeds to benefit the Kitchen Maintenance Fund.
The event will be held in Fellowship Hall on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will be able to select from a wide variety of cookies that can be purchased for only $6.00 per pound! We will also offer a selection of handmade craft items and several white elephant tables that will give you the opportunity to get an early start on your Christmas shopping.
Calling all cookie bakers! We need your help to make this event a success! We need individuals to contribute at least 12 dozen cookies (no store bought cookies please) so we have a wide selection for the day. Donations of fudge and sweet breads are also accepted. Please pick up a sign up sheet at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Place, fill it out and return it to the return box at the Welcome Center. Deadline for cookie sign-ups is Sunday, October 9
We are also asking for donations of any gently used items for the white elephant tables such as candles, candle holders, Christmas ornaments, tea pots, vases or other household items. Please no books, jewelry, clothing or appliances. There is an information sheet that can be picked up at the Welcome Center during the month of October for your convenience. We will be accepting these items beginning Sunday, November 6 through Sunday, November 20. You may also drop them off during the week between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Welcome Center marked “Cookie Bazaar”.
During the month of November we will be asking for your assistance in “spreading the word” about this event. Invitations will be available for you to give to family, friends, neighbors or co-workers and also flyers will be available to be posted in community areas. Look for more information in the next issue of Pine Street Life and the Sunday bulletins regarding these publicity venues.

This is a three mile round trip over a rocky trail, however there is no elevation gain (no climbing). In order to car pool to the top of Peters Mountain (parking at the trail head is limited), we will meet at the parking lot of Fort Hunter (Barn Side parking lot) at 1:00 p.m. Bring water and snack.
