A poem by Ina Hughes, “A Prayer for Children,” captures the spirit of Cheryl Goode, our former Director of Family life:
We pray for children who want to be carried, and for those who must. For those we never give up on, and for those who don’t get a chance. For those we smother, and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer.
In her ministry to children, youth, and family, Cheryl not only prayed for our children and youth, but she was also a passionate advocate for them. In all aspects of her work at Pine street, Cheryl worked tirelessly, but especially, in her family ministry was her zeal evident. Hard working, ceaseless loving, compassionate giving – this is Cheryl. For her presence and ministry we are thankful. God bless you, Cheryl, in your future endeavors.

The final concert of the 2014-15 season of music at Pine street will feature the choirs of market square Presbyterian Church and Pine street Presbyterian Church singing works of ola Gjeilo. mr. Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) was born in Norway in 1978, and moved to the united states in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Julliard school in New York City. New York City, he is also very interested in film, and his music often draws inspiration from movies and cinematic music.
The joint choirs will perform Ubi Caritas I, II, III, Luminous Night of the Soul, and Sunrise Mass, accompanied by a 22-piece string orchestra conducted by Eric R. Riley, the Director of music & organist at market square Church. Pine street’s Ellen B. Hunt has worked hard to prepare our choir, and Anne E. Guenin, pianist, will be featured with the orchestra.

The 7th annual Commonwealth Interfaith service: Prayers for Justice and Peace will be held here at Pine street Presbyterian Church Monday, May 4 at 5:30pm in the sanctuary. Following the service, a reception will take place in the Gathering Place, featuring foods from many traditions and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in faith.
This very special service has attracted more enthusiasm each year, as it brings together a rich diversity of faith and prayer traditions throughout central Pennsylvania. Through music, liturgy, and prayer, we celebrate our common yearnings and raise a collective voice for a more just and peaceful world.
organized by the Pennsylvania Council of Churches, the program is cosponsored by a large group of organizations of varying faiths. There will be music before the service begins. The fellowship hour has traditionally been a wonderful time of sharing and meeting new friends.
It is Pine street’s honor to offer its facilities for this spiritual event, which also coincides with the observance of the National Day of Prayer, which is always the first week in may. Session accepted with regret and sorrow the resignations of Elders Ron Poorman, heather Kegerise and John Goodrich; Commissioned Ruling Elder Craig Kegerise; and Director of Family Life Cheryl Goode.
The summer youth mission trip to Parish, NY was conditionally approved, pending the resolution of the adult leaders who will accompany them.
dr. Russell Sullivan’s upcoming trip to Israel from April 26 to May 5 was approved as use of Dr. Sullivan’s educational leave.
Session called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, May 10 for the purpose of electing officers for the 2015-16 year.
Members who submitted a letter to Presbytery were invited to meet with the Personnel Committee on two Sundays in April to discuss any their concerns and share their views on what can be done to resolve those issues.
Session voted that Mr. Brett Terry be offered the position of Minister of Music and Worship. Information about Mr. Terry was in the April issue of PSL.
Sean Brittain and Kyle Curtis were approved by Session for membership at Pine Street through their profession of faith.Session also approved Kyle’s baptism.

Glee a Huge Success

The “Glee for DDB” fundraiser on march 28, 2015 at Pine street was a huge success. Thanks to everyone coming together to promote, sponsor, volunteer, and contribute, the church sanctuary was full of happy individuals enjoying an “upbeat,” fun evening. The “vibe” that evening was one of “glee” and the champagne reception kept it going!
I always say that Downtown Daily Bread is a “community program” with arms that reach far and wide. The evening was no exception. “Glee for DDB” started in Philadelphia, circled to New Bloomfield, and ended in Harrisburg. The university of Pennsylvania Glee Club came to us from Philadelphia; The Carson long Glee ensemble came from Perry County; and The Pine street Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, the capital city, anchored the event. The evening was shared with the community and enjoyed by all.
I want to thank some of the many people who were involved with the planning and implementing of the DDB-mAPs event. I thank Anne Guenin for being my cochair and “go to person,” Bob Wilson and his MAPS committee; Cheryl Goode and the Congregational Life Committee; the Downtown Daily Bread Board; the DDB Glee Committee; the “Bears for Bread” ladies; Cynthia Swanson and Friends; Russell Sullivan; Steve Messner; Kobie White; Michelle Kennedy; the Carson Long Military Academy and their Glee Ensemble; and the University of Penn Glee Club.
I found the “Glee for DDB” to be a most enjoyable evening. It was filled with singing and dancing, as well as spirit and fellowship. It only gets better when you realize that the not so “gleeful” folks at Downtown Daily Bread will benefit from the evening.
Glee for DDB: A Big Thanks

The Glee for DDB event held on march 28 involved people from virtually every corner of the church community. The event was sponsored by music at Pine street, and that board arranged all of the publicity for the event, designed the program, and handled the box office duties the night of the concert. Thank you to Bob Wilson, Sue Wilson, Ron Poorman, Linda McLaughlin, Louise Poorman, Carol Putt, and Mike Putt. The Downtown Daily Bread Advisory Board met numerous times and it was responsible for the design and printing of the tickets, the securing and recognition of sponsors, the collection and assembly of raffle baskets as well as running the raffle on the night of the concert, and the silent auction. In addition, board members helped with the set-up of the Gathering Place and the rental and donation of reception items. Thank you to Carlyn Chulick, Chris Baldrigde, Georgia Coffman, Lee Freeman, Lisa Landis, David Saurman, and John Jewett other volunteers who assisted on behalf of DDB were Jonathan Freeman, Kristi Saul, Emily Saul, and Elaine Bass. The Congregational Life Committee provided wonderful assistance at the reception. Thank you Katherine Summers, and thanks to Myriam Sullivan, Stevie Sharp, and Betty Rader for helping to make the evening run smoothly.

ALC 5k To Educate

We need your help. But, what can I do, you ask? There is an opportunity for everyone to participate in the first, annual “5K to educate” run/walk on City Island to benefit the Adult learning Center (AlC). Here are some ideas:
• Sign up to run/walk online at https://runsignup. com?Race?PA/Harrisburg?ALC5KtoEducate or at the Welcome Center. Be sure to mark ALC 5K if you pay by check. If you register by May 1, you are guaranteed a t-shirt and goodie bag, but you may sign up at any time. The fee is $25 if you sign up prior to race day. If you register on race day, the fee is $30.
• Invite your family, friends and coworkers to participate. Strollers, leashed dogs and families are encouraged. It’s a family-friendly run/walk.
• Sponsor a runner/walker or a team.
• Financially support the “5K to Educate.” Please mark ALC 5K on you check. The Individual Sponsor form is available at the Welcome Center. We want to thank and recognize you.
• Contact potential sponsors. The Sponsorship Opportunities Brochure is at the Welcome Center. Contact Chris ewing with any questions.
• Distribute participant brochures, sponsorship opportunities brochures, individual sponsorship forms. They are available at the Welcome Center. Contact Steve McMullen to distribute race fliers.
• Sign up at the Welcome Center to volunteer before, during and/or after the race, or contact Joan hays or deb Olson
• Join the fun. Attend the “5K to Educate.” Cheer all the participants along the way!

The staff of Pine street provided invaluable support in the weeks leading up to the event, including help with the sponsorship process, the set-up of the sanctuary and the Gathering Place, childcare, and a presence on the night of the event. Thank you to Russell Sullivan, Michelle Kennedy, Brad Wise, Cheryl Goode, and Kevin Brown. The Glee Clubs were treated to a meal at Downtown Daily Bread prior to the concert. Thanks to the DDB staff of Kobie White and Cynthia Swanson and Friends for cooking and serving a delicious feast! Thanks also to the women who sell bears on behalf of DDB and who graciously made bears for the Penn Glee Club. The young men were so appreciative of the efforts of Margaret Mielke, Loretta Smith, and Marna Holt. Thank you to Debbie Olson, Heather Feist, Beth Alwine, the Pine Street Choir, and David Colestock for contributing items for the raffle and silent auction.

This truly was an all-church event. And because of the efforts of so many, I am pleased to report that the proceeds raised by the Glee for DDB concert will exceed $50,000 and cover the entire food budget for next year for Downtown Daily Bread. Now that is something to truly celebrate and be gleeful about!
