On June 5 at the 11:00 a.m. worship hour, the Choir of Pine Street Church, assisted by our soloists, Courtney Gray, soprano; Beverly Hudson, mezzo-soprano and Jonathan Hudson, tenor, will present Arthur Honegger’s dramatic oratorio, King David�
The work was written in 1921 by the distinguished French composer as incidental music to a drama by René Morax� The commission gave him only two months to complete and rehearse the work … a nearly impossible task To complicate matters, it was to be presented in the south of France where there were not the vast musical resources available to performances in Paris Thus, Honegger hesitated in accepting the commission and turned to his friend, Igor Stravinsky for advice When Stravinsky heard of
the strange assortment of instruments available for the performance, his comment was typical of his approach to music … “Write it as if you meant to write it for that particular instrumentation�” It may seem simple, but it was a profound observation and resulted in a brilliant score from Honegger It met with both critical and audience approval� The strange instrumentation mentioned included several flutes and oboe, a pair of clarinets, bassoon, string bass and cello, a quartet of brass players and keyboard and percussion� This orchestration is the original from 1921 and is most effective� It is made possible through the generous gift of the estate of the late David B. Disney

Worship Matters: Caring for a Treasure

Celebration of the Lord’s Supper is central to our life at Pine Street� Central to that celebration are two sets of communion ware, one set used at each service Each set includes a Communion Ewer (pitcher), a Chalice, and Communion Plates One set is engraved with our official name, “The Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg�” The second set is engraved, “Westminster Presbyterian Church,” with which Pine Street merged in the 1970s
Recently some of Pine Street’s communion ware was taken to a silversmith in Philadelphia for an assessment and estimates to repair and restore the ewer and plates The

In 1923, Honegger revisited King David and took pieces of Morax’s narrative to unify the musical score into a complete, independent work� Thus, the musical pieces are connected by narration, which will be performed by Jonathan Hays
The work follows David from simple shepherd, to victorious warrior, to sinful King and into a final scene of peace at his death, where he expresses his gratitude for the life he had been given�
The Choir has been faithfully rehearsing the score since January, and looks forward to presenting this great Twentieth Century masterwork to our congregation� It will not be the first performance in Pine Street, however This score was performed twice during the tenure of Donald Clapper, and we have some choristers who well remember those performances We trust that this morning of music will bring you inspiration and joy�
The service will feature the work, complete We will not celebrate the Sacrament at the eleven o’clock hour that morning, but it will be available in a full worship service with sermon at the 8:30 hour We trust you will come and make a full morning of worship, study and then some musical inspiration x
obvious issues are that the lid on the ewer needs repairing and the silver has come off the plates in large sections In that assessment we learned something that we did not know The silversmith tells us that the Pine Street pieces are of a style and material used in the 1860s� This means that the communion ware we use every Sunday dates to the earliest days of Pine Street Church What a connection to our history and to all the members of Christ’s church that have gone before us!
A minimum restoration option would be to repair and reattach the lid to the ewer This would require that the lid be re-silvered and the entire ewer lightly polished� In addition, the two Pine Street plates would need to be re-silvered� The cost for the restoration would be approximately $1,500� At its most recent meeting Session authorized the restoration of the communion ware The Worship and Arts Committee would like to offer the restoration of the communion ware as a memorial opportunity� Session previously authorized the committee to ask the congregation if it is willing to underwrite such items that would be used in worship or to glorify God�

W HAt does Pine street MeAn to Me? Personally, I’ve wanted to write these words for almost a year but was unable to express my thoughts without overwhelming emotion�
During many difficult times, I knew that only God could help me find the answer Every time I have felt this way, God understood what I needed� He answered and gave me peace� My daughter, Heidi, calls these moments “God winks�” I love this phrase� I’ve taken up saying it “God winks” are the moments when you realize that God gave you exactly what you needed to get through the day or the situation so you can catch your breath and live to face another day�
The people of Pine Street can be included among my “God winks ” I will be eternally grateful for all you did for Wayne and me over an extended period of time, whether in Harrisburg or, eventually, at my daughter’s home You continued to touch our lives so deeply
You, the people of Pine Street, bolstered our faith through prayer, thought, word and deed� Although we could not be present, physically, in our sanctuary, we felt connected to God in Pine Street because of you It was vital to both of us to continue to be part of our church home and the people we both love(ed)� You reached out and touched us with your prayers, phone calls, cards and visits� We felt deeply blessed�
After Wayne passed away, you continued to be there for me in the same ways� Our Pine Street family is abundant in sharing and caring� Even as I continue to walk my grieving journey, you are the gift that keeps on giving
We think of ‘being present with God’ as an individual pursuit: prayer, meditation, solitude� However, ‘being present with God’ is also a communal discipline: praying together, sharing our faith and experiences, walking the journey with colleagues As Alex says each Sunday, “come pray with me,” this is a time to be present, and be together, with God and with each other�
Thanks be to God and the pastors and members of Pine Street, my church home�
Session Notes for April
The Annual Meeting of the Congregation will be held on May 1, 2011 following the 11:00 a .m . service .
Rev Lang presented a new model for the youth Sunday School Program that will enable the Sunday School to grow and help attract younger families to Pine Street
The Evangelism Committee will reinstate the “Mugging” program as a way of welcoming visitors and prospective members to Pine Street Beverage mugs will be delivered by the Elders to the homes of visitors soon after they have attended a service at Pine Street
Authorization was given to the Worship and Arts Committee to go ahead with repair of Communion Ware, constructing a new Communion Table Top, and constructing a closet in McCormick Hall to store worship-related items . Actions will be pending availability of funds

Lucille Nast has been a familiar face at Pine Street for many years� You may recognize her face in the choir� You may have worked with her on the Worship and Arts Committee You may have heard her voice as you have called to arrange for flowers to be placed in worship in memory of loved ones� Lucille has a quiet elegance always reflected in everything she does After more than ten years as Pine Street’s flower ministry coordinator, Lucille has retired�
The job as coordinator is not as easy as you might think She was in touch with families and individuals who wanted to present flowers; she expressed their wishes to the florist (JC Snyder); provided information to the office staff (Michelle Kennedy) to see that the proper inscriptions appear in each week’s worship bulletins; and she called back next year to see if you wanted to have flowers placed in worship again� And she has done all this with sensitivity and assurance
In 1954, Lucille saw an article in The Patriot-News announcing that Don Clapper had been appointed Minister of Music at Pine Street Church This article got Lucille’s attention because she and Don were classmates at Indiana University of Pennsylvania� Not long after that Lucille became a member of Pine Street’s Chancel Choir and has been there ever since This means she has been in the choir for more than 55 years!
Pine Street Church wants to say a rousing “Thank You” to Lucille for her many years of service to the church and, particularly, for her flower ministry� Lucille and her husband Bill have long been known around Harrisburg for their support of the arts and their appreciation for fine dining� One final note (no pun intended), Lucille has not been given permission to retire from the choir, just yet�
Pine Street Walkers
On Sunday, May 8, 2011, the Pine StreetWalkers will return to the Victoria and White Tail Trails in hopes of catching a glimpse of the freshly blooming Pink Lady’s Slipper� This will be a three mile loop hike with a considerable climb up a rocky trail The pace will be as slow as the slowest walker Wear good footwear and bring water Of course, bring your cameras� Sorry, you may not pick this endangered wildflower So take plenty of photos for your mother and take them to her on this Mothers Day Better yet, have your mother come along We will meet at the trail head at 1 pm� Directions to the trail: take PA Route 225 north out of Dauphin (approximately 2 miles), turn right onto PA Route 325, go exactly 5 miles, the trail head parking lot is on your left Be careful, the parking area is easy to miss as it is behind trees and just after you crest a small hill� Sign up at the Welcome Center Why not consider car pooling from church? Downtown Daily Bread Says Thanks
DDB Benefit Concert
Thanks everyone who made the Spring 2011 DDB Benefit concert a success�
The concert’s free will offering netted $1,783� An extra $200 was due to a Pine Street member’s matching fund donation (a great way to maximize a contribution�) Although the weather was dismal and rainy, the Pine Street sanctuary was warm and filled with good spirit and incredible music
• A huge thanks is due to Tom Clark Jones for putting the concert together, as he does year after year
• A round of applause goes to the performers: Courtney Gray, Beverly Hudson, Johnathan Hudson, and John Sharpe; and to pianists Louise Poorman and Thomas Clark-Jones
• Kudos are due to the concert’s Reception Committee under the direction of Deborah Olson, Pine Street Mission Committtee chair
• Appreciation goes to all the folks who attended the concert, who donated generously to Downtown
Daily Bread, and who made the evening a warm and inviting community event�

Fire Drill

As you know we had our fire drill on Sunday, April 10, 2011� It occurred at 10:00 a�m� during the Sunday school hour� This experience was to build awareness for the congregation, and to guide us in what we should be doing in the event of a real fire
Classes were visited months before the event and educated on procedures� The teachers were sent emails in advance letting them know the fire drill would occur and what time They were asked to be ready for the event� Education about fire safety will be ongoing�
I will visit classrooms periodically with information and meet with teachers
In general we did a reasonable job evacuating the building� We evacuated in four minutes which I said, emphatically, was terrible! According to the fire department this time was acceptable, but three minutes would be even better for the amount of people we need to evacuate� I sensed that some did not feel any true sense of urgency or need to be diligent in evacuating the building� Whether you are doing a drill, or in the event of a real fire the diligence needs to be in the forefront of your thoughts Statistics show that a building can burn in a very short amount of time
When we reached the outside of the building instructions were to go to Third Street in front of the PSEA building� This needed to happen so that in the event the firemen bring their trucks onto South Street we are out of their way and out of harms way�
In Ephesians 1:15–16, part of Paul’s prayer says, “I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers ” Just as Paul prays for all the saints, I give thanks for all the members of Pine Street and want to ensure your safety when you are in community each Sunday Thank you to all who were part of the fire drill on April 10th
Commonwealth Interfaith Service
On Monday, May 2 at 5:30 pm Pine Street Church will host the Commonwealth Interfaith Service: Prayers for Justice and Peace This is an amazing service and one you don’t want to miss� The mission committee will host a lovely reception following the service� Please take time out of your busy schedule to come to hear prayers for social justice and peace presented by people of many faiths such as Christian, Jewish, Muslin, Bahai, Buddhist, Unitarian Universalist, and others�
Picnic On The Patio
On Friday, May 27 at 11:00 a.m. the mission committee will be joining the residents of Presbyterian Apartments for a ‘picnic on the patio�’ Hot dogs, baked beans, drinks, salads, desserts, music and more will be provided� COME ENJOY an afternoon with us
Lenten Food Drive
Many thanks to all who contributed non-perishable items for our Lenten Food Drive for the Ecumenical Food Pantry� As always, Pine Streeters stepped up to the plate and hit a home run� It’s only because of all of you that we are able to succeed in all our endeavors to help those who have less than most of us�
Shawl Ministry
Shawl ministry at Pine Street is 5 years old!!! On May 6, 2006, we had our first meeting� Now, 5 years later, we have given over 260 shawls or blankets to people who are celebrating a wedding or the birth of a baby baby, needing comfort during an illness or death of a relative or friend, or are blessed by a friend or relative who just wants them to know how much they are loved and appreciated There are currently about 30 active knitters / crocheters� Usually about half of these women attend our meetings on the second Saturday each month at 10:30 am until 12:00 noon� We usually meet at the church on the 3rd floor in the ‘board room’ adjacent to the resource center (library)� The fellowship we share is wonderful and we would invite anyone interested to join us If you have any questions, contct Debbie Olson at 533-4548�
Vacation Bible School
Save the date for Vacation Bible School, June 20-24, 2011� Pine Street will partner with Faith United Church of Christ again this year They are located at 1120 Drexel Hills Blvd in New Cumberland, Pa We will gather from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. each evening� There will be classes for three year olds through those finishing 5th grade The children will enjoy music, lessons, crafts and activities There is no cost for Bible school but I am including a list of items we will need for crafts If you can provide any of these items please bring them to the Welcome Center and mark them for Cheryl Goode/VBS or if you prefer a monetary donation would be appreciated You may call Cheryl at the church office 238-9304 x105 with any questions
