A Communion Ware Commission Rachelle Lowe Creates Liturgical Art for the Synod

Pine Street member Rachelle Lowe was recently commissioned by the Synod of the Trinity to create a new set of communion ware in celebration of its 300th anniversary. The pieces were hand built using a coil technique in brown stoneware. The clay contains flecks of manganese that appear in the high temperature of the final glaze firing, adding visual texture and depth. Three coats of glaze were applied by hand using a paint brush. The flagon alone took ten hours to glaze (flagon is a liturgical word for the pitcher used during communion). The leaf motif was inspired by Rachelle’s love of the natural world.

The Synod’s anniversary milestone has been observed in many ways: special grants for world mission and addressing the plight of the African–American male, planting trees at many denominational church camps and conference centers, a special liturgy for the actual anniversary on Sunday, September 17, and special worship at the Synod Assembly meeting. The Assembly kicked off its meeting in State College in a room adorned with eight colorful confessional banners on Sunday evening with a worship service that began with the playing of bagpipes and included special music by Brett Terry from Pine Street and vocalist Adrianna Cleveland from Pittsburgh. Worship also included the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper served on the newly-commissioned communion set. Rachelle, a ceramic sculptor, is a graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art, where she received a BFA in ceramics. developed her creative voice and enhanced the breadth of her artistic vision. You can also enjoy another example of her work in the chapel area of our sanctuary or by visiting her studio, housed at The Millworks in Harrisburg. Congratulations to Rachelle and the Synod for this inspired set that will serve communicants for years to come.
The Women’s Retreat On the Road with Jesus by Joann Smith The Women's Retreat Committee has begun planning for the 2018 Women’s Retreat to be held March 16–18. The theme is On the Road with Jesus. Alison Siewert, using inductive Bible Study methods, will lead us on a journey with Jesus and his disciples, a diverse group of men and women who faced many challenges with him. We are excited to have Alison as our speaker. A graduate of Occidental College, Alison is an accomplished worship designer, leader, stage director, and award-winning playwright. Our entertainment for Saturday evening will include singing Broadway hits. We may even have our own Dolly Levi from "Hello Dolly" appear, as well as perhaps some other Pine Street entertainers. If you have never come to a Women's Retreat, or perhaps maybe attended one and it has been awhile, please give us a try, or come back – and consider inviting a friend! Sign-ups will begin on January 7. To register, complete the registration form located at the Welcome Center and make a $100.00 deposit. All women should register by February 4. The check should be made out to Pine Street Presbyterian Church with "Women's Retreat" on the memo line. The balance of your room rate (which includes all meals) is due by March 4, 2018. Chantal Atnip Endorsed for Moderator of General Assembly An Exciting Journey by The Rev. Dr. Russell C. Sullivan, Jr., Pastor At the December 5 meeting of the Presbytery of Carlisle, our own member Chantal Atnip, Elder and Clerk of Session, was endorsed by the Presbytery of Carlisle to stand for election as the Moderator of the 223rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA). This is a

big moment for Chantal and for Pine Street! The person elected holds the highest office in our denomination. The Moderator moderates the General Assembly that elects her or him, and next year that General Assembly will meet in St. Louis. The Moderator will also represent the church abroad and at home in denominational and ecumenical gatherings. At the Presbytery meeting in Camp Hill, Chantal was questioned about her faith journey and motivations. Calm, measured, and articulate in her response, Chantal was a credit to our congregation and to all of those who have nurtured her in her Christian discipleship. She will serve the church with distinction as moderator and comes to this calling well-prepared for this high responsibility. So here is what we need to do for her. We need to pray for her and to encourage her. In my heart, I believe this is her moment, and that requires of us to be in prayer fervently for her and her family. The Moderator of General Assembly spends at least 52% of the year away from family, and that is a burden, but it is one that can be borne when others are supportive and caring. You’ll be hearing more about her journey in this next year. It’s all so exciting!!

Guenin As we begin a new year, we remind you that “stewardship” is not just an annual pledge and yearly contribution. It is a spiritual discipline – a time for us to regularly acknowledge that all we have is a gift from God. Each time we give a financial gift to Pine Street, whether at church or as we note our E-tithe in our checkbook, we are offering a prayer to God, giving thanks for the abundant gifts we have been given. AND, begin the year with an EXTRA gift of at least $25.00. Use your Initial Offering Envelope or a pew envelope and specify the gift is your INITIAL OFFERING. The Initial Offering is paid by Pine Street on behalf of each member to the Presbytery of Carlisle, which then forwards that amount to the Synod of the Trinity and the Office of the General Assembly. We are thankful to be part of the Presbyterian Church (USA), which does amazing things in our region and throughout the world. E-tithing is a great way to make a contribution to the church. Once a month, an amount specified by you is pulled from your bank account and pushed into the church’s bank account. You receive statements and credit just as if you had placed an envelope in the offering plate on a Sunday morning.
